2013 MBA with 802.11ac won't choose 5GHz even when faster

I have a 2013 MBA and new (802.11ac) Airport Extreme.  With the base station in dual mode (2.4 and 5.2 networks sharing same SSID), the MBA refuses to connect to the 5GhZ network most of the time, even when very close to basestation.  This is annoying for wireless Time Machine backups and other high-throughput use cases (files copies to/from network are another).  Without moving computer, when I set basestation to use diff name for 5GHz network and then manually select it, transfer speeds go from ~12MB/sec to >40MB/sec (impressive!).
Using iStumbler, I see that the 2.4GHz network indeed shows "better" signal levels, BUT IN THE REAL WORLD the 5GHz link is MUCH faster.  What's up with that?
I'd like to go back to dual-mode just for elegance and simplicity.   Plus, it seems like a bug.
My question is:  Can I force the MBA to always link to 5GHz network, or at least its propensity to pick it despite 2.4GHz link (falsely) appearing to be better?
Thanks!

I actually install large wireless networks professionally, so maybe I can help clear up a few misconceptions.
To the original poster, there really isn't a way at this point to force the MBA to select the 5.0GHz network, but this really isn't a "bug" of the MBA.  It's really a missing feature from the AirPort.
Your assumptions on how the client device works are correct.  They select the band based on the signal strength (basically Signal to Noise Ratio [SNR]).  This is actually a function of the NIC itself and is based in the hardware.  Since the vast majority of client NIC cards are manufactured by a couple of companies, it will probably take them a while to change the operation, and for marketing reasons, I don't know if they want to at this point.
The vast majority of people that I encounter every day don't understand that there's more to wireless performance than signal strength.  They look at the corner of their device and say, "I have 4 bars, look at how great my network is.  Yeah, it's a little slow, but that's just how wireless is".  Companies that sell consumer wireless access points are able to say "Cover your house with a single device".  I really think that the lack of consumer awareness is what causes trouble for those of us (like the original poster) that understand that there's more to it than that.  Even OS-X falls into this marketing bubble.  Why do I have to hold down Alt and click on the wireless icon to actually see performance data?  In my opinion, the icon should be the Transmit Rate as a number and I hold Alt to see the RSSI when I need to troubleshoot, but that would scare most people.  For these marketing reasons, I don't think that you will find client devices selecting 5.0GHz by default until 802.11ac really gains in popularity.
The other option, which wouldn't require a tremendous amount of work on Apple's part is a feature that many enterprise wireless manufacturers refer to as "Band Steering".  Basically, the AP (AirPort Base Station) will ask the client for its capabilities.  Once it knows that the client is 5GHz capable, it pushes the client over to that frequency and there isn't anything that the client can do about it.  If I knew how, I would be requesting that feature as an advanced option of the AirPort product line.  That way, those of us that really care about wireless performance are able to get it without having to hack through and broadcast a 2.4GHz network that will basically be unusable in the coming years since the new wireless standard is 5.0GHz only.

  • USB Printer with Time Capsule (with 802.11ac)

    Hello Guys,
I have a Canon MP258 inkjet printer and it's not working with my airport time capsule (with 802.11ac) .
I had tried a lot of method to solve it but it can't be done.
Pls, help me to solved this puzzled.Thx
    Best Regards,
    Johnremy

If the name of your printer does not appear in the printer list when you click the + button, try contacting Canon Support to see if they have an updated printer driver that you could download and install.
Download Free Driver Pinter Canon Pixma MP258
    http://filedir.com/drivers/printer/canon-pixma-mp258-mp250-printer-driver-downlo ad-516940.html
If this does not work, then Canon has not provided the printer driver for their device to operate on a network USB connection.
Do you understand that if you can get the print function working, that fax, scan, copy, maintenance, etc functions will not work when the MP258 is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule?
Only the print function is supported on the Time Capsule, so if you need the other functions, you should connect the MP258 to your computer.....not the Time Capsule.

  • IPhone won't send iMessage (even when signed on Wi-FI or 3G)

My iPhone won't send iMessages even when I try to connect through Wi-Fi or 3G. At first I thought it was my Wi-Fi but it wasn't since I can connect to programs such as Safari and Instagram. I have also reset my network settings. Can someone help me or have any idea how I can fix this?
    Thank you!

    Phone is not jailbroken.
    Got it re: passcode lock.
If I do a system restore, but I restore as a new phone, will my crucial phone functionality remain intact (phone number, ability to make calls, etc.)? And when it's restored, do I then just do a sync to have all my data brought back into the device?
Sync settings for calendar and contacts are enabled properly, and are the same as they have been for years. I'm not sure it's the calendar or contact data that is corrupted (although anything is possible) because the sync problems started happening exactly when the iMessage problems started happening.
Please advise on the system restore (not from backup) and I will post my results. Just wanna make sure I'm not doing anything irreparable.
    Thanks...DG

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Does ipad2 work with 802.11ac?

My present router is not working so i want to get a new one.

    No.
802.11ac is backwards compatible with the N standard.
The iPad will connect to the router but at only N speeds.

  • Late 2013 rMBP 13" 802.11ac problem

I've got a brand new 13" Retina MacBook Pro 13" (the 512GB i5 model)...and after a rather strong showing at first, it falls absolutely flat when attempting to connect to the 5GHz side of my wireless router.
    Specifically, this:
      Current Network Information:
    yannnet 5G:
      PHY Mode:          802.11ac
      BSSID:          10:fe:ed:xx:xx:xx
      Channel:          149
      Country Code:          US
      Network Type:          Infrastructure
      Security:          WPA2 Personal
      Signal / Noise:          -56 dBm / -92 dBm
      Transmit Rate:          27
      MCS Index:          1
As you can see, this isn't a weak signal problem. In fact, I've got multiple other devices (mid-2009 MacBook, 27" 2011 iMac, Nexus 5, iPad third-gen) that connect to that network just fine, whether at 11ac speeds (the Nexus 5, at a full 433 Mbps since it only has one antenna) or at 11n speeds (for all other devices).
2.4GHz appears to have sporadic issues as well, but it's better than 5GHz. Ethernet via a USB 3.0 adapter seems to work fine.
I've got Mac OS X 10.9.2 installed. Any idea what's going on here? I've cleared preference plist files etc., and that only seems to help for a minute or two.

Go ahead an exchange it for a different machine - 95% health is just not acceptable for a new machine.

  • I have a new MBRP. On wired ethernet it can be used as a wireless hotspot. Since 802.11ac gets better range I'd like to use it with 802.11ac as a hotspot for my older 802.11g/ndevices. Can I do that ?

I know that if I use wired ethernet then the  MBRP can be a wirelss hotspot for other devices. Since the MBRP supports 802.11ac and I have a new 802.11ac wireless router it gets much better range than my older 802.11/n devices.  There are places in teh house where the MBRP connects to the wireless but where older 802.11g/n devices lare out of range. In those rooms I'd like to use my MBRP connected to the network wirelessly using 802.11ac as a hotspot for the nearby 802.11 g/n devices. Anyone know if that can be done and how to do it ?

Turn on Internet Sharing in Sharing preferences. Share the Ethernet connection to wireless.

  • 3600 series with 802.11ac

    Hello,
I noticed that the 3600 access point series will get an add-on module to support 802.11ac. This standard will support more than 1 GBit/s.
But the 3600 series still do only have got one GBit port. Do I only see the mistake in this plan? :-)
And does anybody has got extended information about 802.11ac in the upcoming Cisco portfolio?

Let see what happens when using 802.11ac on 1gig.
802.11ac is supported only on A radio, based on the channel bonding the supported datarate varies.
roughly, it'll become 500mbps(+75mbps on G-N) due to half duplex nature, do we've an application that drives 500mbps. Since it is an edge device, it'll be connected to another AP as wgb/bridge or wireless client, shared bandwidth 500mbps remains same, using multiple hops or multiple connected device still shares this 500mbps. make sense.

  • My phone won't use IMessage even when the person I'm txting has an iPhone why?

Why won't my phone use iMessage even when the person in txting has an iphone

I'm having same problem with sending to 3 people from a particular WiFi Network. For two people the iMessage i write is sending, but stops just before Delivery and then says not delivered. For the third person it immediately sends as text message.
    Answered to questions above.
Can I send to others... Intermittent. Usually no, but then at some point a lot of iMessages comes at once.
    Settings have been enabled.
Also other persons settings/Messages are enabling iMessage.
Enabled for WiFi + non roaming cellular ( at my end it should mean only wifi as I am in roaming area with wifi available).
Numbers are all enabled as we have used them a lot of times, an no changes or upgrades this month.
So: it seems to me to be a WiFi issue here, but the odd thing is that it sometimes lets iMessages through.
    e-mail and browsing works fine.
    Any suggestions?

  • Ipad2 won't shut down even when i press the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time.

I can't shut down my ipad2 even when i press and hold the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time.

If the screen appears to be zoomed in, then does tapping the screen with three fingers zoom you back out ? When zoom is on you should also be able to scroll around the screen using three fingers on the screen.
If you are seeing the keypad then that should be for the iPad's passcode, I assume that you have one set ? If the iPad is disabled then I wouldn't expect the keypad to show.

  • Why does my iPad have a black screen and won't turn on even when I try charging it

I just got a survivor case today and put it on my iPad and it stopped working and just has a black screen even when I try charging it

    Not charging
    1. Reset iPad
    2. Try another wall socket
    3. Try another cable (make sure it's an original Apple cable)
    4. Try another charger (make sure it's an original Apple charger)
    5. Clean Lightning port with compress air or new paint brush

  • IPod Won't Power Up, Even When Connected to Mac

I'm trying to figure out if there's any chance this could just be the battery, or a more catastrophic failure (harddrive, etc.). The iPod will not power up, even when connected to the Mac, and will not mount as a removable drive either.
I've been having trouble with the battery for some time now (it will only hold a charge for about an hour, two tops) but I would think that even if the battery failed outright it would still work when plugged in (either to the wall, or to the Mac).
Does anyone know for certain if that is the case? I'd hate to waste any money sending this off to ipodresq.com for a battery if it's something more serious. (And this one is so old, if it is a harddrive failure or anything like that I'd be better served to buy a new one.
    G4 933 (Quicksilver)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks for those links; I performed a hard reset and that seems to have brought the iPod back to life, at least for now. I suspect that the battery is no longer holding any significant charge and needs to be replaced, which might be why it locked up in the first place.
So now I get to decide if this 1st gen iPod is worth the money to replace the battery, or if I should just finally buy a new one. (I definitely do not want one of those rumored touchscreen models, though, if they turn out to be reality... impossible to navigate by touch alone while driving, and I have no use for video on an iPod - I want to watch video BIGGER, not smaller!)
    Thanks again!

  • Is the Airport Express compatible with a computer with 802.11ac

Thinking of buying a Toshiba Model: P75-A7100 which apparently has Wireless-AC.  Can I use the airport express with this?  If not, will the Airport extreme $199 let me play music wirelessly?

You can use express with AC wireless.. All AC wireless is backwards compatible to N wireless routers.
If not, will the Airport extreme $199 let me play music wirelessly?
You cannot play directly from extreme to speakers.. so there is no audio output from an extreme.. but some amps now are ethernet or even wireless connected to the network.. so it is hard to say no or yes. It all depends on what you are intending to plug it into.

  • I transfered videos from iPod to iTunes on Windows 7 PC but album art won't show up, even when I choose to find album art

I just installed iTunes 64 bit on my PC with Windows 7. I transfered my movies from my iPod Classic but no album art on any of them. I even try to find album art but nothing. I've downlaoded a couple of music albums onto same PC that I downloaded previously on iPad and they have art but not the videos I just transferred from iPod. I also can't play any of them on PC. I keep getting the no Quicktime message even though I downloaded QT. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem, except I dont have itunes match enabled.
I synced my ipad and unchecked all my albums to remove them. Then I re-synced with the albums selected. They went back on WITH the artwork under 'artists' but then for some reason the next time I sync, some of the artwork under 'artists' is gone leaving only a music note for the cover.
It also has nothing to do with the cloud backup as I have experienced this with both backing up to the cloud and to my mac.
    strange.......
