2013 rMacbook Pro 15" Full Cup Coffee Spill

Just wanted to share my experience to everyone here on the communities. I work on a desk with my Macbook Pro Retina 15" plugged in HDMI to a monitor, and then a windows laptop on the other side. Today I was working too fast and got carried away switching from typing on the Windows computer to typing on the Macbook and I accidently knocked my cup of coffee full speed on the keyboard of the Macbook Pro. Black coffee went everywhere as you can imagine and started seeping into the keys of the Mac, yet I flipped the Macbook Pro over and set it at an angle where the vents under the screen and the keyboard could drain away from the CPU and internals. Of course at this point I thought it was lost for sure. I turned the Macbook Pro off and set it to dry for awhile. The only issue I noticed when I actually had it on with the coffee on was that the mouse was going crazy in different directions.
After letting it dry in the arizona air (out of the sun) I decided to see if it was pretty bad. I knew I could get it replaced with protection that I had, but I really just wanted it to work out of convenience. The first time it tried to boot, it restarted after 3 seconds of startup and then booted all the way up. The second time the screen stayed black and would not bootup. I let it dry just a little longer and there ya go, everything back to normal without issue. I feel extemely lucky that it is working but I do have to wonder if there will be any longterm damage I will find later. I have tested the speakers, and the screen colors, and I am typing this without any keyboard issues so far! USB and HDMI still work great and the power is charging through the wall.
Does anyone have any ideas for me to try out just to make sure it is truly ok? I realize it was a stupid mistake and honestly I never keep open cups near it, but today was one of those off days :/ . Anyways, let me know if something comes to mind! Also, this is kinda amazing to me that the Macbook Pro is still working no problem!

Geek Squad Accident Protections for water damage always do well for me
In the future investigate a much better and much cheaper insurance for THIS type of occurance than 'geek squad"
A type of insurance called "inland marine insurance"
covers, loss, theft, accidents, spills, etc etc.     Typically $40 or less a year, much cheaper.
Been using same for 15+ years.

  • My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk).  Can I do this?

My newish MacBook Air was just lost to a coffee spill, and I need to migrate back to my MacBook Pro using a recent back-up (Time Machine to external disk) for a few weeks.  This same disk was used to back-up the Pro earlier, and to migrate from the Pro to the Air.  Can I do this "back-migration" from the Air to the Pro?  Is it maybe better just to migrate the specific folders (Outlook email, Office docs) I am sure I need?

Do not attempt to copy files/folders from a Time Machine backup. Only use the Time Machine application to restore from the backup.
Click on a Finder window and select Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "restore" and select "restore items backed up with time machine" from the hints list. You will find these two articles:
Recover items using Time Machine and Spotlight
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can use Time Machine with Spotlight to recover lost or deleted items.
Note: You can retrieve earlier versions of TextEdit documents from within TextEdit. For more information, see:
View and restore past versions of documents
Open a Finder window and type a search word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner.
Select a location to search in the location bar.
Refine the results by specifying search criteria. Narrow down Spotlight search results
Open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, then choose Enter Time Machine.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the Time Machine backups. Your search is performed in every window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it’s returned to the Documents folder.
Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.

    Hi All,
I had a terrible accident with coffee, I spilled a full cup with cream and sugar.
It seems after I press enter the system reboots and took it to the service center and told me the motherboard was fried and replacement would cost 3000$.
The FRU is 04x1737, do you know where can I buy it cheap?

No difference other than sku variations for regional builds.  Lenovo and ebay are always sure bets, but I've also sourced both new and refurb parts from PowerSource and another etailer who sells all on ebay now I think.  Called Thinkpad Parts.
Any chance your T430s is still under warranty?  You'd be surprised how generous they can be for covered repairs due to human error like yours.

  • No airplay or mirroring on 2013 Macbook Pro Retina

After searching forums and the web for days I still have not found an answer so here by an independent post:
My MBP Retina shows no airplay icon and devices not available under Preferences>Display
When trying to connect Apple tv to iTunes library, it tries to load it and shows the name of my iTunes library but after one minute, error message: ‘Could not connect to iTunes Library’. Find it strange that Apple tv can find the name of my iTunes Library but can’t connect to it. Same goes for iPhone and iPad when trying to connect through Remote to MBP iTunes.
iPhone and iPad connects perfectly to Apple tv with airplay, however they are not able to connect to my MBP Retina and iTunes over wifi, only via USB.
    Have…:
2013 Macbook Pro Retina with ML, latest update
    Apple TV3, latest OS
    iPhone5, latest iOS
    iPad2, latest iOS
Have turned on Home Sharing in iTunes with same ID and all devices connected to same wifi
Have followed Troubleshooting Home Sharing but with no result
Have tried switching off Firewall on MBP but with no result
Have tried connecting Apple tv via cable to router, no result
Have uninstalled antivirus programs but with no result
Have rebooted, MBP, router, apple tv but with no result
Anyone who can help? Or have an idea on how to test if I have some kind of programme blocking incoming signals on my MBP?
    Many thanks!!!

Thank you for your suggestion regarding partitioning my old MacBook for OS10.5. I like that idea and I'll give it a try. Can't I just use my Time Machine for a back up or should I use SuperDuper to make a clone? I'll have to buy a new drive to make a clone as my external drive is pretty full with Time Machine backups. Should I use Disk Utility to partition my drive as recommended by Neil?

  • Pro's and Cons 2012 vs 2013 Mac Pro

I can pick up a new (open box) 2013 Mac Pro for a decent price. This is the base machine, 3.7ghz and 12gb ram.
I currently have mid-2012 tower model, again the base 3.2ghz and still at 6gb ram. I have upgraded to dual 5770 video cards and a 256gb SSD boot drive.
Only had the 2012 since February full warranty so I can probably sell the 2012 for about 2/3 of what I will spend on the 2013.
I will need to get my internal storage moved to an external alternative.
I use the Mac Pro for both work and personal stuff. Work is a lot of GIS stuff, working with large satellite images, etc. I do need to run a fair bit of Win software via Parallels for the GIS work.
Personal is weekend shooting video and photo, FCPX and Aperture my main tools there.
Question: is this a good upgrade or should I wait out things with my perfectly fine 2012 machine, let the dust continue to settle on the new model.
I got the 2012 at a really good price, however ever since buying it I wish I had got the 2013. Now that the chance is back I am eager to jump.
Sorry to ask such a basic question but didn't see a lot of recent discussions on this topic. TIA

Barefeats.com results and reports on performance and issues with 6,1 "nMP" at www.macperformanceguide.com
You have to factor in the huge cost of moving to Thunderbolt storage for little in return. Issues with 3 displays, with buggy Adobe and Apple drivers and support still in graphics department.
The 2012 can do a lot more and still more new than old- you can't put in anthing other than $1,000 SSD or $1,000 D700's in an nMP, and you are better off with an OWC 8-core cpu upgrade on the nMP as well.
The cost of 4 x 8GB DDR3 in the "oMP" is acceptable as are price of even a 1TB EVO SSD along with the cost of a PCIe SSD controller (just not OWC or Sonnet Tempo Pro models maybe).
I don't think it would be totally pouring good money into old tech. That is the think with Xeon and Mac Pro. There are niche users in some areas that totally benefit from a new nMP.
Not sure if Snow Leopard is safer more stable or reliable vs Mavericks but have all the apps and bugs and drivers asnd support caught up to 10.9.3 now?
So you do have 2008 along with 2012 to ease the pain cost of nMP and having to invest in some Thunderbolt expansion that you will have to weigh the benefits of.
Get and wait for 2nd generation. SSDs are never a lost cause. Some is just the cost of owning and staying current. I have poured as needed into my Mac Pro but it runs better now than ever in the past, and just put some new EVO SSD, the 500GB $250 is chump change and is so much nicer than the smaller and older SSDs I have also bought and grown out of over the years. Cost of doing business, new tires and whatever and now used for backup and spare.

  • Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 15' will not boot an external disk from a Mid-2012 MAcbook Pro. What should I do?

In order to simplify moving all my files from the previous mid-2012 macbook pro 15' when moving to my new late-2013 macbook pro, i superdup-ed the full hard-disk to an external ssd. Unfortunatelly the new mac resuses to boot from this external disk (i get the grey disk with a line over it). The external disk works just fine so if I boot the new mac from its internal SSD I can read/write the external disk without problems.
Old OS X is 10.9 as is the OS on the new mac.
What I need to do is to boot the new mac from the external ssd, use the same superduper to copy the external content onto the internal ssd.
How can I solve this issue?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you made a backup of your files with SuperDuper, use Migration Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities) to transfer your files from the external drive > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html It will create a new user account with the transferred files, so you may want to merge both user accounts > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472
The Late 2013 MacBook Pro uses a special OS X Mavericks version which makes OS X compatible with it, and older OS X versions do not work with it. That's the reason why you cannot start up from the external drive created from the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro

  • Poor performance of Premiere Pro on 2013 Mac Pro

A month ago I bought a 2013 Mac Pro mostly for running Premiere Pro CC. The configuration is 6 cores @ 3.5 GHz, 64 GB RAM, 2 x D700 graphics, 1 TB internal SSD. It runs OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.
I tried Premiere Pro CC today for the first time. The input--entirely stored on the internal SSD; no external disk was even connected--was about 100 clips shot as AVCHD (1080p25 PAL) at 24 Mbps.
I edited this in Premiere Pro and added small adjustments (mostly changes of levels) in about 20 clips. The rest had no adjustments. There were no transitions applied. For the most part, it just had to copy the trimmed input clips to the output.
I queued this for Adobe Media Encoder CC at H.264, 1080p25, @ 24 Mbps VBR 2 pass. Audio was 192 kbps, 48 kHZ,stereo. The output was written to the internal SSD.
While encoding, the CPU was running 50-70% idle (!!!) so it was using only 2-3 cores and half the memory (32GB) was unused. It certainly wasn't trying very hard. No other programs except Premiere, AME, and the activity monitor were open during encoding and I was just sitting there watching it lumber along.
The time to encode the timeline of 9:47 was 21:28. That is 2.2x real time. My 4-year-old Windows machine using CS6 could do that. What's wrong? Should Premiere Pro be this slow on hardware this fast? Is there some secret box "Use all the cores and all allowed memory" that I have to check (I set the preferences to allow Adobe to use 52 GB). Does Premiere get tired in the evenings? The internal SSD runs at 900 MB/s and there was no transcoding to do. What was going on?
This is my first test of Premiere and it is kind of disappointing. Did I just waste 6500 euros on the Mac Pro or am I using the wrong settings. Any advice is welcome.
    Thanks.

Yes, should be great if someone put some light in all this performance thing in the new mac pro, I just did a test, 3 video tracks with 4K Red footage, 50% of opacity each one and I just play the 2 min sequence, and Premiere started to drop frames at half resolution playback and when I changed to full resolution playback the sequence was unplayable, I mean, they sold this MacPro/Premiere workflow as the way to edit 4K without compromises and now we are not capable to deliver jobs because the poor performance... and I'm not talking now about the constant crashes and freezes, I'm talking about that we can't play just 3 tracks without any effect.
Would be great if someone put some light on this, maybe we are blaming adobe and it's apple's fault and we should go to the apple store to return the machine... I did test on the Mac and looks OK, I'm more than confuse about this...

  • Repairing keyboard from coffee spill

Just after I set up my new iMac and was basking in its glow, I managed to dump my full cup of coffee directly on the keyboard. Of course the keyboard doesn't work now, although the mouse does.
OK - it was Friday the 13th and it was 5 AM and I can "borrow" my iMac keyboard from work this weekend and I have ordered a new keyboard (and a protective keyboard cover.)
My question is this - is there anyway I can possibly dry this thing out and get it working again? I dryed it off the best I could right away and used a hair dryer on it. How about putting it out in the hot sun or maybe in the oven at 200 degrees (wrapped in a towel of course)?
Any home-spun fixes or it this keyboard kaput?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Coffee Spill on unibody MBP

I spilled half a cup of coffee on my laptop, needless to say I was horrified and immediately shut down the computer, turned it upside down (to drain) and wiped it down. After all the brown liquid has been cleaned off, i took out a few keys in the most heavily flooded zone, was surprised to find no coffee in the recess.  I turned it back on. Thankfully it came back without a hitch.
I read a few tips on dealing with coffee spills afterwards, and they recommended that I take apart my computer for a thorough drying. Since it turned back on and there is no visible liquid anywhere, do I still have take it apart and dry it? I'm asking because I am traveling right now, just checked out of my hotel room, so access to a hair drying is not available.
    Thanks
    Angela

No.  Your insured property is also covered off the property.
If the damage occurred inside an automobile, your auto policy will be primary, homeowners secondary.
P.S.  No I do not work for any insurance company.  I just know how various policies works or should work.

  • TS1713 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 15" Power Cable Black Gunk (Ink-like)

    Hi folks,
I have a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 15" and I bought a spare power adapter for it (85w). Today I went to pick up the cable and my hands were covered in a black gunk. I looked down and the cable had ink-like gunk on the cable? When I went to rub it off, the white coating to the cable seemed to be burned off and showed a tan undercoat.
Nothing was spilled on it or anything, it was just on the floor near my computer (not near anything that could burn the cable or something).
Has anyone had this happen? What the heck happened?
    - Concerned

    In a word, yes.
The video out capabilities for the 13" and 15" retina MBPs are the same.

  • Will the late 2013 Mac Pro boot from an external drive (4Tb, USB 3) with a cloned Win7 x64 partition on it?

    Hello all,
I ordered a CTO Mac Pro for heavy rendering and animating work, and I am planning on using bootcamp to install a windows partition (for 3DsMax). As I am now using a HP Elitebook 8770W that has several valuable files and projects on it, I have bought a Seagate 4Tb external Desktop Drive that uses USB 3.0 to use as a backup drive. Now, as I saw that Bootcamp Assistant only supports installing a x64 version of Windows 8, my question is:
Will a late 2013 Mac Pro using bootcamp assistant boot from an external USB drive with a cloned partition running x64 win7? Or do I really have to buy Windows 8 and install that to my internal SSD, and then use the migration assistant to copy over my projects?
    Thanks!

Posted? or found in new builds?
BCA should really just pull whatever the latest drivers are when run.
If it is with how it partitions and sets up nMP and its partition for Windows that is another matter and makes sense.
Some people want UEFI native booting in Windows, and my experieince with that on PCs has been that it boots faster and runs well, but has different partitions that it wants. For one thing, there is now a backup "system reserved" partition, just as Apple GUID has some volume information blocks and backup and areas that were once optional (and if format erase was not able to, it would not create one) are now mandatory.
Windows 8.1 is req'd, reason a backup should be a big must - is it might overwrite and use another OS's  partition table entries.  Especially when doing UEFI install.
There was something about which linux OS was safe and how they would each add entries in the table, but one would not place nice.  That one had to be done first or not at all.
