2013 US mac mini at 240 V

have a mac mini bought in the US and want to use it in the UK. there is no more power brick and the plug states 120 V.
do i need a transformer? seems a bit out of date as a solution...

The Mac Mini specification says "Line voltage: 100-240V AC".
You'll just need one of these: £ 1.43 from Amazon UK:

  • Mavericks on my late 2013 Mac Mini (8gb RAM) does not recognize my APC650CI UPS as a UPS

I have a late 2013 model Mac  Mini running Macvericks.
I just bought a an APC Back-UPS XS 650CI for it (I have 3 other Back-UPS 650CI for other systems - Windows 7 and 2x Netgear NAS setups).
In the Energy Saver panel of System Preferences the Back-UPS 650CI is not recognized, but it IS correctly listed in the USB section of System Profiler.
I have tried other UPS monitor programs: PowerSave UPS does NOT recognize it, but apscupsd DOES recognize it.
The Netgear ReadyNAs DOES recognize the new unit (I tried swapping the two Back-UPS XS 650CI's around)
I have reset the UPS - still not recognized.
I have tried on of the other Back-UPS XS 650CI's that I have around - not recocognised.
I have reset the Mac's Pram - still not recognized
I have reset the Mac's SMC - still not recognized
I have reset the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist - still not recognized
My ancient Macmini1.1/Intel Core Duo DOES recognize the Back-UPS 650CI in the Energy Saver panel of System Preferences.
    Thanks for your help
    Andrew

    Answering myself
Had long conversations with APC/Schneider (quite helpful once you get past the drones)
They weren't aware of the problem but it does seem that Apple have removed/omitted the code that used to recognize the APC Back-UPS XS650CI at some point after Snow Leopard - Lord knows why.  This despite the fact that it is correctly listed in the USB section of System Profiler.
The only solutions that I can see is either for APC/Schneider to get Apple to reinstate the relevant code (unlikely) and/or for APC/Schneider to issue an updated version of PowerChute for Mac (long overdue), which is possible but don't hold your breath.
I bought the (rather expensive) PowerSaveUPS app from the Apple Store but that doesn't work either (http://www.powersaveups.co.uk/) - I've emailed them to grumble but no reply yet.
In the meantime best bet is to use apcupsd for Mac - it isn't ideal but it works - RTFM.
The latest iteration is available on http://sourceforge.net/projects/apcupsd/files/osx-binaries%20-%20Stable/3.14.11/
    Cheers!

  • I need help to take decision to choose between iMac Late 13 and Mac Mini Late 12

    Hey guys,
I have currently got iMac 27 3.2 GHz mid 2010 and since I am a photographer it unfortunately dosn't meet my requirments at all! It has recently become too slow and that is why I have taken my decision to purchase a new desktop to improve!
I was intensely awaiting new Mac Mini Late 2013 at Apple 22 Oct event yet no new Mac Mini came up for upcoming year! Now I am very skeptical to choose between to options; iMac Late 2013 and Mac Mini Late 2012! Since having high performance is really essential for me, I am going to tune up my device with 2 Samsung 840 PRO SSD and 16GB RAM to take advantage of the best possible performance.
Since I can easily utilise my iMac 2010 27" as display for Mac Mini, please instruct me which on I should buy or I have to be more patient for next Mac Mini!
    Thanks in advance!

I am not sure how you are planning to "easily utilise my iMac 2010 27" as display for Mac Mini" I am concerned that might not work out nearly as well as you might think. I have seen that attempted by others and the results were pretty clunky and could easily wipe out any anticipated speed gains. Be sure and talk to someone who uses an iMac as a display for another computer before you spend any money.
That said, if I were in your shoes I would either go with a current top end iMac or a maxed out, top end Mac mini and a 27" Thunderbolt monitor. You will end up spending about the same either way. You can save a few hundred dollars buying factory refurbished machines from the online Apple Store or Smalldog.com but you take your choice of what is available and don't expect it to be there tomorrow.

  • 2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini 2.66 Quad Core i7 ?

2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini Server 2.66 Quad Core i7 ? I have a choice between these two for running Final Cut Pro X. Price is nearly the same.
The Mac Pro has a ePCI 512 display adapter, 16 GB RAM, more hard drive expansion and faster 1tb 7200 rpm conventional hard drive. FW 800.
The Mini Server has two 1 tb 5400 rpm conventional drives, 16 GB RAM and an integrated display adapter. Has thunderbolt and FW 800.
My primary concern is the performance of the processors. Does anyone happen to know how they compare in video editing?

This may give you some ideas.
There are some folks on this forum who report very saticfactory results editing on Minis.
Perhaps they will chime in with first hand experience (which I can't give).

Hi Alxx911, and John Hammer1. After reading John's reply - " You can plug something into it's headphone jack. though" . I thought i'd try out of curiosity. I plugged in some headphones. I didn't expect anything to happen  and nothing happened. The audio jack is for the Dell soundbar which is optional.
Here's a direct copy and paste from the users manual: Section About Your Monitor.
Attaching the Soundbar AX510 / AX510PA (Optional) CAUTION: Do not use with any device other than the Dell Soundbar. NOTE: The Soundbar power connector (+12 V DC output) is for the optional Dell Soundbar AX510/AX510PAonly. To attach the Soundbar: 1. Working from the back of the monitor, attach the Soundbar by aligning the two slots with the two tabs along the bottom of the monitor. 2. Slide the Soundbar to the left until it snaps into place. 3.  Connectthe Soundbar with the DC power connector. 4. Insert the mini stereo plug from the back of the Soundbar into the computerís audio output jack. For HDMI/DP, you can insert the mini stereo plug into the monitorís audio output port.  If there is no sound, check your PC if the Audio output is configured to HDMI/DP output.
This monitor has no speakers. (Like John Hammer1 mentioned). The no speakers feature was one of the reasons I chose this monitor.
    Good Luck !

  • Mac mini bought January 2013 with Samsung 712N S monitor

    Hello,
I bought a Mac Mini in January 2013 and I am trying to make it work with my old Samsung monitor 712N S, I bought also the minidisplay port to vga adapter.
The problem is that the monitor won´t work, just black, no sign of connection.  I checked the mac mini with my tv through hdmi and works perfect.
Any idea how can I make it work?
    Thanks a lot.

Check the monitor with another video source. Be sure it's working. If it is working, then you've isolated the problem to either the cable or VGA adapter, or the Mini itself.

  • Hi there, can anyone tell me how to make make Garageband ignore HDMI as an audio output-device on a 2013 Mac Mini? Now it keeps on prompting me: Do you want want to use the HDMI device (monitor without audio) for audio output? Thanks in advance, Grtz T.

    Hi there,
Can anyone tell me how to make make Garageband ignore HDMI as an audio output-device on a 2013 Mac mini i7 using an Apogee jam as an input for bass and a Behringer USB DAC with RCA audio output? Now it keeps on prompting me: Do you want want to use the HDMI device (monitor without audio) for audio output? I'm also suffering massive audio lag issues with the Apogee jam after waking the mini from sleepmode, wich pretty much renders it useless.
    Thanks in advance,
    Grtz T.

I think the easiest way to do this is to have the EyeTV app running in one user account and sent via HDMI to the TV, and use a separate user account for Screen Sharing. Both logins can be active at the same time and with Lion you can connect via screen sharing to which ever login you need.
With regards to the Mac video resolution changing, when it is not the current input on your AV receiver. This is 'normal', if the Mac sees no signal it drops down the a lower level. What you need is to buy a HDMI Detective Plus which tricks the Mac in to always seeing a signal and hence it will not drop down the resolution. See http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=8005
The Mac mini does have an IR receiver. This can be used with the EyeTV app, iTunes, and similar. Yes I believe EyeTV would run for prolonged periods quite happily, it is has been around for a long time and had most of the rough edges polished off. However one issue you will have to deal with is that it does not automatically update its program guide data. For this you might have to write or modify an AppleScript. Elgato support or their user forums will be a lot of help.
You can set EyeTV to convert recordings to an iTunes (Apple TV) compatible format and then delete them from EyeTV.
The HDMI Detective should solve your handshaking problems.

  • 2013 Mac Mini crashing with 10.9

New Mac Mini running 10.9. I use Keynote and Pages professionally. Yesterday after working 3 hours on a Pages project I got "Pages quit unexpectedly" and I lost all of my work. Keynote has done the same but fortunately I have not lost any of those files. I should point out that since I do use these programs professionally and that the "New" Keynote and iWork are a total joke I have the older version of iWork installed. Apple has not left me any choice. It goes beyond iWork and into iTunes. iTunes will also crash by freezing and it is the latest and greatest.
Safari is hanging up all of the time. If I reboot it sometimes fixes the problem but Safari has crashed on me many times now along with the other programs.
I use an interface for audio recordings. I have Pro Tools 11. It will not work with Maverick. I installed Maverick before I knew of this problem. I use this program professionally.  I went to use Garage Band. It recognizes the interface. (Mackie 1640I) and the settings in "System Preferences" and in Garageband are correct. It will not show any input signal in Garageband. It connects by firewire and will play audio with iTunes out of the interface. I have used Garageband for many hours and believe I have checked all of the settings.
I have run disk utility and Verify Permissions/Repair permissions. Frankly I would love to format the whole drive and go back to Mountain Lion or whatever the last OSX was called. I do not have these issues with my 2012 MBP. Plus I feel that I could work with the older version of iWork comfortably if Maverick is the problem by causing conflict with the older iWork. Plus I really need to get out of Maveric so I can install ProTools. That is a must for me. I own a recording studio and this computer was purchased to be the in house computer and the MBP would be my personal and a back up if there was a problem with the mini. Boy am I glad I have it!
I backed up all of my data this morning and tried to format the hard drive but the "erase" was greyed out.
If anyone of you fine people have any ideas or solution for these problems I would be delighted to hear from you.

Hello Linc, Thank for your reply. I am swimming in deep water here trying to meet your request and I appreciate your patience. Is this any better? Before I go any farther posting the Safari and Keynote crash reports I will wait to see if this is the information you are seeking. Thank you.

  • Webcam on a 2013 Mac Mini

I'm using a 2013 Mac Mini running on OS X Mavericks and my recently retired PlayStation 3 left me with a PlayStation Eye. I was hoping I could use it as a webcam on my OS X Apps so I downloaded Macam.
The case: It only works with the Macam app, and I've transferred the driver into the folder it has directed me to but the camera doesn't work with ANY of my apps (like PhotoBooth, FaceTime, Skype, etc.) except for the Macam app itself. Any suggestions on what to do?

Easiest fix I know is to get a Mac Compatible Web Camera.  There are many, but the link shows several possibilities.

  • My mac mini (2013) dose not show me wifi connection.

my wifi sign on my mac mini 2013 OS X 10.8.5 (12F37).
it started before my last update and hasnt been resolved after getting OS X 10.8.5
it shows on the WIFI sign WI FI: NO HARDWARE INSTALLED.
    can you help me?

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. If you can connect to the Internet via Ethernet, Bluetooth, or a USB network device, make sure all available OS X updates are installed. If Wi-Fi is your only means of network access, skip this step.
    2. Reset the NVRAM.
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. Boot into Recovery. In the menu bar of the OS X Utilities screen, there's a Wi-Fi menu. If it works, select Install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
    5. Take the machine to an authorized service center for testing.

  • Is it safe to update 2013 Mac Mini with a 1tb SSD?

Is it safe to update the mac mini 2013 with a new compatible ssd and also RAM?  Also will a Mac Mini i7 3rd 2.6ghz guad with 1tb ssd out perform a iMac i7 2.9ghz 4th gen quad?
Buying it for music production so wandering if the ssd update will be worth it...

Can I configure that in a way that the harddrives are merged (ie a fusion) as I don't like the idea of moving files all the time for better speed.
Also would it maybe worth just buying a seagate hybrid drive to solve that?
Since I believe OS X 10.3 or 10.4 OS X is always moving your files around on the boot drive in a process called automatic optimization. The idea being there is a band of data blocks on every hard drive that provides a bit faster access than the remainder of the drive. Over time OS X identifies those bands and moves the most frequently accessed files into that band. The result is an improvement in average disk I/O performance. In the Apple Fusion drive, since the SSD and HD are mapped as a single drive entity it is the SSD that gets identified as being the fastest and the most often accessed files are moved there. The end result is overall disk I/O performance rivaliing a pure SSD but at about 20% of the cost. However, whether you have a Fusion drive or a plain HD, yoiur most frequently accessed files will be moved around and the only way to prevent that is to not use OS X.

  • Mac Mini 2013 stuck on apple logo

My Mac Mini is stuck on the apple logo with the spinner underneath it. I was running a program and put the computer to sleep. When I started it back up, the program was stuck. I couldn't get to the command options and shut it down. When it started back up, I typed in my password, but it continuously got stuck on all my account logins. I tried to safe boot it, but it just loads the progress bar and goes back to the logo and spinner, even if I leave it alone for half an hour. I tried to use the option button, but none of the options work. I tried unplugging everything but the monitor and turned off my Apple Bluetooth mouse. Still didn't work. It is a 2013 model, so it has no CD drive. PLEASE HELP! I need this working soon. If it is possible to migrate another Mac to fix it or migrate one onto the disk after I erase it, please let me know. If not, give me some advise. I need help ASAP. Thanks for your help!

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • I have a WD My Passport for Mac (2 TB).  It quit backing up my mac mini (8/2013) stating that it needed to be repaired.  Our IT person reformatted it.  Now time machine states that it can't back up 234 GB,  because there's not enough space.

I have erased the passport for Mac and started all over. When there is ~15 minutes left in the initial backup of the mac mini hard drive (234 GB total), it gets weird and time machine states that it it calculating the time remaining.  24 hours later, it is still backing up but shows that <200 GB of 2 TB are available and it quits backing up stating that there is not enough room.  HELP!  The WD My Passport for Mac and the Mac mini are less than a year old.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
