2048 errors

I just upgraded qt-pro to the latest version and JUST purchased the mpg $20 component from Apple. Now I can read mpg files normal definition but any of my mpg 2 HD files (HDV 1080i - 60i) generate an "Error -2048: Couldn't open file XXXX because it is not a file that Quicktime understands."

Jeez, i'm dumb. I didn't even know what I needed to do. The reason Quicktime didn't work is because the output file is mpg4, not mpg2. I saw the mpg suffix and assumed that it was mpg2. Conversion of mpg4 to mpg2 yielded a file that was handled easily by Quicktime

  • QT won't stream videos.  I get the 2048 error.  How do i fix this?

Okay, here is the deal.  For about 3 weeks i've read stuff online about this issue that has not helped me.  Let me break it down
I've converted some video's to Mov files and i'm streaming them to some friends.  They are able to watch the video from the stream nin QT but i get the 2048 error.  I've tried everything that i can think of.
I've read that i should change the file from mov to something else, but i was also told the file has to be mov format to stream.
I'm not interested in watching the file in VLC or anything else. In order for me to share the videos it has to be QT.
I thought it could be my firewall but that doesn't seem to be the case. I've unistalled QT and reinstalled it as well
I really need to get my QT to view these files.  I even called apple who blew me off. I have the latest version of windows and QT pro.
I need some help..please feel free to explain the solution to me like I'm 5. I'm not great with this stuff.
    Thanks

  • .mov created with 7.1 on a mac gives a -2048 error in Quicktime  7.1on a PC

Anyone know why a .mov file created on a mac gives a -2048 error in Quicktime on a PC? Both computers have the latest version of Quicktime and OS.
    Help?

When I "get info" on a Mac the format is DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720x480, Millions, DV, Stereo, 48Khz, 30fps. It's a 455MB file captured to a .mov using Sorenson Squeeze. I then copy it to a FAT32 hard drive and transfer it to a PC (WinXP). I've got Quicktime 7.1 installed on both machines. I thought it might be the FAT32 hard drive but it isn't because I burnt a data dvd from the Mac and then dragged the files onto the PC from the DVD. Same issue. -2048. I don't think I am creating problems in the transfer...
I've read some of the post and I tried renaming the file .wmv and the video plays fine in windows media, but the audio is crackling.
I can't import into any PC video program, Sorenson, Vegas they all give me unsupported file type errors.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Another 2048 error question

I have Windows XP Pro and the latest version of Quicktime.
Recently I recorded a video with my Pentax Optio W20 video camera which records in *.MOV format. The video plays on the camera with sound no problem. I copied the video from the SD Card to my harddisk and when I try to view the video with Quicktime I get:
"Error -2048: Couldn't open the file xxxxxx.mov because it is not a file that QuickTime understands."
I emailed the file to my buddy and the file plays without issue on his laptop (WinXP). So the file is a working file and is not corrupt or missing anything.
I've searched on this site and others and it seems this is a common issue when someone is trying to play a different file format with QuickTime, however this is a *.MOV flie! It should play without issue. What gives? HELP!
    --Z

Here is my second plea for help.
I have since taken the files to a post production house and they also cannot open the larger ones. they say the pc has a 2 gig limit. Is this true? why is this not documented.
if no one can answer the above, perhaps someone can be so kind to tell me where I can get an answer if not on this forum. thanks!

Here is the problem, when i try and play my converted mp4 videos off my nas box i get the error-2048(not a file quicktime understands) but if i copy these files to my computer they play without a problem. I am totally stumped with this problem and will love to no what is causing this and is there a way to fix this problem.

Had the same issue and found this information.  Just tested and it worked for me. Hopfully helps some else also!
Answer: Change your DNS setting in the iPhone/iPad Wi-Fi settings.
That worked for me. My original DNS settings were assigned by my WIFI router a. I removed these and placed in: 208.67.222.222 (Open DNS server IP)
To make this adjustment go to Wi-Fi, locate your selected Wi-Fi network and click the blue arrow beside it to being up advanced settings, click in the DNS area to change it.

  • -2048 error message

    Hello QT's,
I'm trying to playback some QT files, originating from cell phone cameras. Half of them work while the others won't play and result in a -2048 message. I'm looking to import into Final Cut Pro to edit together....any suggestions for conversion would be appreciated. No luck thus far w Real Player (for Mac), Compressor or QuickTime itself...
    Thanks,

Download MPlayer OSX (free) which should at least open the files and tell you what format they are... Once you know what the file, video and audio format is, post the info in this thread.

  • I keep getting an error 2048 everytime I try to play back my Maya file that I saved as a qt movie. I just recently updated qt and this is when the errors would pop up. Before the update I had no problems. How can I fix this?

I updated quicktime a few days ago and now I keep getting error 2048 whenever i try to play back my Maya file after saving it as a qt movie. I had no issues with this before I did the update, after the update I keep getting the error 2048 message. QT will play my earlier Maya movies and other video, it just won't play back my latest work. Help me please, I need this for school.

The 2048 error message usually suggests the files use MPEG-2 format which is not supported natively on Windows via QuickTime without the additional MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20 from Apple).

  • Error 2048 not a movie file

QT 7 pro was working fine at first. Now when I try to play a video file I get "error 2048 not a movie file. The file plays fine in another player. Also QT will play a QT movie but not a file. I have QT installed on two computers with the exact same problem on both. please help.

Yes the format of the files is windows media video files. They play successfully on real player and on VLC media player.
They were also playing on itunes, but now they won't play on QT or itunes. By play a movie I mean the movie was downloaded as a QT movie. The desktop icon says QTmovie. The files That give the 2048 error have real player on the desktop icon.I have uninstalled and reinstalled, even disabling norton before reinstalling still error 2048 on QT. P.S. Itunes and QT were downloaded as a bundle, whatever the problem is is affecting itunes because now when i add files to library they don't show up.

  • Quicktime error 2048

I am having issues with trying to get MP4 files imported into Itunes.
After several attempts I did some experimenting.
I converted a DVD in to MP4 format and it will not load.
The complete DVD movie convetted to MP4 is 2.2gb in size.
This movie will not load into Itunes and also will not play with quicktime. quicktime gives a 2048 error this is not a movie format.
Took the same movie and made the file smaller, new file is 2.0gb and it will load and play in both quicktime and itunes.
Dont know if there is a file size limitation for Itunes and Quicktime.
Hope someone can come up with a solution for the 2048 error
    Larry
      Windows XP

Since I posted this thread, I have discovered some things that might cause the error 2048.
As I memtioned in my first post the error I was getting was for a file that was 2.2gb in size. When I reduced the file size to 2.04gb the error went away. I also have converted 5 other DVD files to MP4 with out the error comming back again.
The 5 other files were less than 2.0gb in size. All files work fine in quicktime and Itunes and on my Ipod.
One other thing that I did was to take the 2.2gb file and split it in half and transfer it to my Itunes. This also worked as I could play the first half and then take a short intermission and play the second half.
It is my opion that Itunes and quicktime may have issues with files over 2.2gb in size.
    Just my $.02 worth.

  • Is there a correlation b/w Error -2048 and MPEG-4 files greater than 2GB?

I am having considerable difficulty in getting any of my DVD/movie files greater than 2GB to upload into my iTunes library. Anyone else having this difficulty? Through another problem, I discovered that iTunes ability to play video is based a thinned-down version of the Apple's QT engine, which prompted me to try and open these files using QT Pro; however, there too, I am getting a peculiar -2048 error suggesting it is not a movie file. The files were created using WONDERSHARE and I am experiencing difficulty with only the files that exceed 2GB in size.
For WONDERSHARE users, here are my relevant settings:
    RESOLUTION: 720*400
    CODEC: H.264
    FPS: 30
KBPS: 2,000 or 2,500 (toggled in between both to manage file size for longer movies, like 3 hour Bollywood epics)
Any help on this matter woudl be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tabish

    Jon,
Thanks for your response. I have inserted commentary below:
    I am having
considerable difficulty in getting any of my
DVD/movie files greater than 2GB to upload into my
    iTunes library.The 2 GB
restriction is usually on your source file -- the DVD
VOB -- or associated with Fat-32 file system. I have
H.264 files as large as 3.8 GB for SD content.
The file system is NTFS. I am not sure what you mean by DVD VOB.
    I discovered that
iTunes ability to play video is based a thinned-down
    version of the Apple's QT
    engineiTunes can access the
entire QT structure. The iPod and TV players are
limited to a modest QT sub-set.
O.K. But, QT still cannot open the file. If the files are corrupt, how come they only become corrupt at 2+ GB.
    however, there too, I
am getting a peculiar -2048 error suggesting it is
not a movie file.If issued by an
Apple application, this error code usually equates to
"noMovieFound" at the referenced location. This could
be a path error or refer to a movie interrupt during
conversion (as when your 2 GB plus source file
terminates prematurely) and the target file is not
closed properly (and is likely not recognized as a
    valid QT file).
    CODEC:
    H.264In which profile?
Again, not sure what you mean by "profile."

  • Quick time error 2048 - cant open file

I just downloaded quick time and cant open some files. They are designed for quick time but when I try and open them I get the 2048 error message. I have deleted and re-installed the quck time and am still getting the message.
    Any ideas ?

Error -2048 implies MPEG-2 file format which QuickTime Player doesn't play without additional software:

  • File won't play in Win only (Error 2048)

    Hi,
I've read through lots of the posts regarding 2048 and haven't found a solution.
A QT movie was prepared for me and delivered to me on a DVD. I'm currently running WinXP SP2 with QT 7.1.3. Here are the things that will and won't work:
    1. Try to play the .mov file on the DVD; Win QT gives me error 2048.
    2. Drag the .mov file to my desktop; error 2048.
    3. Drag the .mov from my desktop to my flash drive and take it to a Mac -- now Mac QT won't play it.
    4. Put the DVD in a Mac -- the file plays fine.
    5. On a Mac, copy the file to my flash drive -- the Mac will play it fine from my flash drive.
Looking at 3-5, what grabs me is not just that Mac will play the file and Win won't, but that if the file just passes through my PC, then Mac won't play it either. This almost sounds like one of the old data fork/resource fork problems that used to plague Mac/PC compatibility, except that we shouldn't be seeing that anymore.
I have tried this with 2 different machines running Windows, so I know it's not just my machine.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Aaron.

Open the file (on a Mac) using QuickTime and open the Movie Info window. Report back what codecs and formats are in the file.
The (-2048) error message usually means the format is MPEG-2 and it requires the QuickTime PMEG-2 Playback Component to view.
You could also try installing the free VLC app (Windows version) to play the file.

  • LiveType template error # - 2048

I am having trouble with LiveType templates. Everytime I try to open some of the templates that came with LiveType (version 2), I get the error message "Cannot Render: error # - 2048". this hapens on all but a couple of the templates that came with the software. I would really like to use these templates, but I am stuck.
    Thanks,
    Louis
    Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Considering the probelm you're having, if I were you I'd trash the LiveType application and all the data files, and the LiveType Receipts. Then install both the app and the data files again.
The application is in your main /Applications folder. The Receipts are in /Library/Receipts. The data files are probably here:
    /Library/Application Support/LiveType/
Before you trash those, though, take a look at them in the Finder window. See if, in the Kind column, it says LiveType Template.
You are saying that when you try to use one of these templates in LiveType, you get the -2048 error, right?

  • Home movies on dvd not allowed in imovie 4  error messages 2048 & 1409

    hello:
i just put some home movies on a dvd and would like to edit them via imovie4. but imovie will not take the dvd. i keep getting the error message 2048 "error during import. file could not be imported. the file video.rm can't be imported. quicktime couldn't parse it."
i've tried dragging the dvd icon onto imovie but i keep getting that same 2048 message.
    help!!!
    thanks.

A DVD is always digital. The problem is that the video on it is highly compressed and in a form that doesn't allow editing. It needs to be converted to DV in order to edit.
You don't have to have a DV camera, you can also use a DV converter to import directly into iMovie.
There is a commercial application called DVDxDV that you can use to convert your DVDs.
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/
A bit more expensive than the previous suggestion, but hopefully easier to handle.
A final option is to use a DVD recorder with a hard drive. If all you want to do is edit out parts of the video, this option is fine. I use one where I copy from my VHS tapes to the hard drive in the DVD recorder, edit out the commercials and then burn the DVD. This avoids the computer altogether, but you can't add stills, titles, transitions or effects.
