20mb broadband

Hi
I upgrade to 20mb bb about two weeks ago ,i got about 9meg download on bt own speed test and the range was 2-20meg .
I was on a 9meg profile for about a week and bt speed test always said i was on 2-20meg connection.i know the profile can change but its the fact bt are reporting my connection wrong!
I always connect at over 10000kps on the downstream.
This is the odd part on bt speed test now it says my connection is 600k-8meg just like adsl 1 profile even though on the first week it was 2-20meg.
So has my connection tripped out and my profile is stuck at 8 meg ,i known its only 1000k difference to 9 meg but it all counts as getting over 1 meg download was pretty good.
If it hasnt tripped out and bt report it that way if you get under 8 meg than thats fine .
Thanks for you time

  • Upgrading to 20mb broadband

    Hi
I have requested that BT upgrade me to the 20mb broadband service.  I have been told that I need to recontract only if the speed is greater than 9mb is this correct?
Please can someone let me know

A month or so ago I lost connection to BT, and it took a week to get back online, but I'd dropped speed from 8mb to 6mb.  I then received an email saying that I could be bumped to 20mb if I renewed my contract for 12 months.
I agreed, and they bumped me up to my original 8mb!
Thanks BT, in contact with Ofcom, this is very shady.

  • Upgraded to 20mb broadband - Got 18900Kbps connect...

After upgrading to 20mb Broadband, I was immediately impressed with the massive speed difference I was getting compared to my old 8mb line.  On Thursday (my activation day) I ran a generic internet speed test to see if my line had been upgraded and had a download speed of 18900Kbps, over 10000Kbps more than what I was getting previously. Excellent, I thought.
I downloaded a large game file yesterday during peak time at an average download rate of around 11100Kpbs, still way, way better than my previous line ever was.
    This morning (around 8am on a Sunday) I've tried to continue the download and I'm getting only around 4000Kbps.  Ran the same generic speed test and I'm downloading at a maximum of 5468Kbps, ran BT's own speed test with the same outcome;
I've been warned to expect my net to run like a bag of hammers for around 10 days after my line is upgraded, but is it normal to have such a massive difference in speed over a couple of days?  I've noticed from the data below that my line's maximum achievable speed is still at 7150Kbps, not the 20000Kbps I've upgraded to.
And how come my Assured Rate test is almost 5000Kbps, yet the maximum achievable is 1600Kbps?

    Hi Fordaz
Within the first ten days you may notice a lot of fluctuation. Hopefully your speed issues will rectify themselves during the stabilisation period but if it doesn't I'll be happy to help you with this.
Should you see no improvement towards the end of the stabilisation period email me at [email protected] with your BT account number and telephone number and a link to this thread.

Just an aside my broadband light on my homehub is constantly flashing, very rarely does it glow steady. I have changed the adsl filters to no avail.

  • BT 20MB broadband, -Why did I bother

The long and short, I had Bulldog 8MB broadband and recieved 7.7MB
I moved over to BT 20MB as the BT website said I should expect at least 18MB and I am 1.5KM from the exchange (by road / cable, not as the crow flies).
I now have BT 6,652kbps connection speed and an IP profile of 5500.
I recently had a line issue and have had the line from pole to shiny new BT master socket replaced, have tried both BT Hub 2 and old netgear router, numerous filters and no other extns of anything else connected.
Having moved to what I assume to be ADSL2+ I have a slower connection and downloads that my old ADSL 8MB connection.
I am somewhat confused by what I should expect, despite 15 years in IT and being involved in corporate SDSL, cisco networks etc.
    My stats are
    Connection          6,652kbps / 1,192kbps
    VPI/VCI               0/38
    Modulation           ITU-T G.992.5      ADSL2+
    Latency               Interleaved
Noise Margin        13.8dB/5.7dB        Pretty good from what I have seen of other peoples stats
Line attenuation   25dB/13.1dB        Is this high?
Output power      0.0dBm/12.5dBm  Not seen anyone else with a 0.0dBm reading?
If I had an 18MB connection, what would I actually see as a connection speed and what would my IP profile be?
I understand / believe that ADSL2+ uses multiple carriers to transmit data and therefore should transmit more than 6,552kbps on a 6,552kbps line, but what should I expect to see and get from a data transfer perspective?
If living 1.5km from the exchange gives a 6mb connection how close do you have to be to get a 20mb connection? next door?
Personally I think we are all being bandwidth throttled because the exhange is oversubscribed.....
Anyone have any thoughts? Should I give it up and go over to fibre (which I guess I should have done from the start)?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks for the replies, makes a little more sense now, (I am on the Chandlers Ford exchange btw).
I am still a little confused therefore why my download speed is so slow.....
    My router info is as before;
    Connection 6,652kbps
    Type   PPPoA
    Modulation   ITU-T G.992.5
    Latency    Interleaved
    Noise margin 13.5dB
    Line attenuation  25dB
    Output power 0.0dBm
    If i put the downstream attenuation into the calculator on the previous link i get the following;
    Approx line length 1.8km
    dslMAX 8128kbps               IP Profile 7150kbps
    adsl2+ (21CN) 18144kbps   IP profile 15000kbps
    adsl2+ (LLU)  18144kbps    throughput 16057kbps
This is infering that I am only getting dslMAX connectivity or my adsl2+ connectivity is absolutly pants.....
I am only getting connection speeds of 6,500kbps and downloads around 5,500kbps consistent with my P Profile.
    WHAT IS GOING ON?
Is there anyone from BT with half a brain who can give me a straight answer, because I am cancelling the contract as soon as I can if this isnt resolved.....
    All I get from the Indial call centre is;
have you connected to the master socket?,..... have you changed the microfilter?,..... are you connected wirelessly?,..... have you got another computer you can connect with?
or you finally get through to an engineer, who says
we are really sorry you have this problem,..... we will fix it,..... bear with us,..... we have made some changes to your connection,.... it will all be ok now,.... please wait another 10 days to see the changes come into effect.
Guess what, after MONTHS and several calls I am STILL getting 6,500kbps and I can walk to the exchange in 3 minutes so its not exactly a long way away, so the other 90% of Chandlers Ford residents mush be getting REALLY POOR connection speed........ unless.......of course........its just me and there really is a problem.........
Who knows, I don't and certainly BT don't!

  • Paying for 20mb broadband only getting 6mb

Hi, this is my first post on this forum although i have had bt broadband for 5 years now.
I'd just like to know if i am getting the most out of what i am paying for. having done a speed test i am currently getting 6.08mb/s download and 0.34 mb/s upload according to speedtest web site with a ping of 41ms. My exchange is only 0.4 of a mile from my house and according to kitz.co.uk using there maximum adsl speed calculator with my downstream attenuation of 20db stats that i should get dslmax of 8128 kbps, adsl2+ 20256kbps and states my line length to be approx 1.4km. What i do not understand is BE broadband say that i could get approx 16mb from my line. So is BT throttling my connection ? Over subscribed ?
I have done a check based on post code for my exchange and it states that it can support adsl2+
Can someone explain or check to see this is the maximum i can expect.

Are you seriously? Only 20 mb?? And you are getting 6 mb from them??? In my country there is no such thing as 20 mb broadband... Minimum 100 mb! And it is very cheap! In UK you must pay about 30 pounds/month for 18 months and you will get this **bleep** and in my country you would pay only about 10 pound/month with no contracts and you will get from 100 mb download speed!
No, really... It is UK! It is very developed country, but broadband... Even Africa has that kind of broadband... I really dissapointed about that I will never understand why it is so hard to you to make better broadband. Offer to some companies in my country to do that job! They will do that with pleasure! And after a half an year you will see a huge changes.

  • No broadband connection since upgrade to 20mb

Since being upgraded to 20mb broadband I cannot get on the Internet. My line tests ok, all the lights on my hub are green, and I have had an engineer visit  and we did a connectivity test, the result showed all ticked except the DNS authorisation. The engineer stated that this was an ongoing problem in our area with a few customers affected. He said the problem has not been sorted out yet and some customers have had no broadband for 2 to 3 weeks with no solution in sight. Has any one had this problem and if so who did you contact to sort the problem out.

  • MacBook Pro and Virgin Media Broadband (Router WNR2000)

Hi there...I'm having issues with my brand new macbook pro and virgin media broadband wireless.
I share an internet connection with 4 people wirelessly in a house..We have 20MB broadband, and have been supplied by Virgin with a netgear wireless n router (WNR2000).
My internet connection drops randomly, and I mean really randomly. Sometimes it is fine for a whole day. It is generally slower than my old laptop (Windows platform, hewlett packard) but the thing that bothers me mainly is that the connection drops. Today it has dropped loads, not helpful when having a long skype conversation.
I have rang virgin and they are completely useless, refuse to help because the other 3 computers (all windows based) run fine and they say it is a problem with the macbook pro. However, I have tested this very laptop with another virgin connection/router and its been fine. Also when my friend brings his macbook pro to mine he has the same problem - slow internet and connection drops.
Does anyone know of any solution to this??? I dont know what to do and im close to pulling my hair out.
My TCP/IP settings i'm not sure if they are correct...but everytime the connection drops properly, i have to restart the router and it is fine - when it drops i get a message on airport about a self assigned IP.
i can post my settings if required....
any help would be much appreciated
    cheers

    Hi there
Do the other people sharing the Broadband find that their connection is dropping.
You could try a router reset or check if there are any firmware updates. Failing that try a different router, I have a Linksys router WRT150N.
Just thought of something else, how far away from router are you. Wall composition is quite important, so is the positioning of the router to get best coverage.
thats about the best suggestions i can come up with. Hope it helps.

  • Broadband Option 3 up for renewal, still 8mb issue...

I have been on Broadband Option 3 up to 8mb for a while and after numerous calls to BT (India) I have still not managed to have my line upgraded to up to 20mb which the line can carry.  I have had it tested, put the Home Hub info into corresponding websites and been told the line can sustain up to 20mb but for some reason I keep getting fobbed off and told I'll have to wait.
Well my broadband is up for renewal so I thought I'll be holding all the cards as it where.  It appears not.  I still do not have any guarantee that the service I will be getting will be up to 20mb they tall me I'll have to wait for my line to be upgraded.  Well I've waited about 10 months now and are not going to renew unless I get up to 20mb.
I have telephoned the sales desk who put me through to technical support in India who ask me play school questions and get me to perform childish tasks and no matter how many times I tell them I still can't get an up to 20mb contract deal.
What do I do to finally get the service for which I am paying for and the line can sustain?
Your advise and knowledge will be gratefully needed.

    Many thanks all for replying.
I have emailed the mods via the above link (john46) so hopefully they will intervene and sort some out.
In answer to some of the questions my exchange is Chislehurst and I'm only 1.4kms away from my local exchange and have:
Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.
However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.
The following services are available in your location:
    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
    BT Wholesale SDSL
    BT FTTC
    AOL LLU
    O2 / Be LLU
    Bulldog LLU
    TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
    Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
    Tiscali LLU
    Tiscali TV (via Tiscali LLU)
    Virgin Media (Cable)
As you can see the exchange is ready for an upto 20mb broadband service.
I should have mentioned before I have another phone line in the house used purely for broadband.   Lots of family members competing for broadband width and this has been upgraded to 20mb for about a year now.
So if one line is why not the other ??
Anyway, fingers crossed it'll happen once the mods get involved.
    Cheers.

  • Are near 20mb speeds really possible?

     Hi.
I received a letter around a month ago stating that the Huddersfield exchange (and BT) could now offer me up to 20mb broadband.
I live about 1 mile away from the local exchange and the max speed I can get according to BT's online tester is 7mb. I thought this strange and so checked broadband speed for a postcode that was right next to the street that the exchange is on. Google maps says that the location is less than 0.1 miles from the exchange. Even here the max speed is 9mb according to the BT calculator.
Could anyone give clues as to why the speeds are so low even though the distances are so close. Has the Huddersfield exchange been upgraded for 20mb broadband? This will have a great impact on my decision to renew with BT.
    Cheers.

I'm no expert.  I upgraded to infinity a couple of weeks ago. During the original marketing phone call I was told that My speed would be 19.5 Mb.  They implied this was precise - rather than the 'up to' 20 Mb flim flam.
Ive checked the speed a couple of times since the upgrade and bt's speedtester tells me I'm getting 25 Mb (consistently).  I have no idea if that's accurate or not.  I did get a lot of trouble with dropped connection initially but this seems to have been down to my home phone base stations being snuggled up to the hub and router.  No other problems yet except all of my bt account details, login names, user ids and so on are completely buggered up.  It's a miracle I ever reached this forum, really <-- looks like something else, too

  • Time Capsule and Virgin 50 MB Broadband

    Hi Guys
Well its me again turning to you for advise.
Today Virgin Media came and upgrade my 20MB broadband to 50MB by installing a new modem.
    (Spec: EuroDOCSIS 3.0/DOCSIS 3.0 Operation
    EuroDOCSIS/DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0 Compatible
    Supports four channel bonding
    Ethernet Interface (RJ-45)(10/100/1000 Mbps compatible)
Its working fine and I have just checked the speed 46MB, however the installation guy said I need a special designed router from them to be able to get max power of 50MB.
I think that my Time Capsule doesnt need it anything as it can handle it really well, but as you can imagine when I mention Apple Mac to the Virgin guy he had already panic in his eyes. He doesnt know. he even gave me a leaflet how to download speed optimizer for Windows. Fool. Obviously my 24inch iMac is not big big enough to see I dont use Windows. Da!
Anyway, their website says: " Your new 50Mb broadband comes with a wireless 'N' router as part of your package7. This not only provides greater wireless range than a 'G' router, but coverage is also better, so the amount of 'black spots' you've experienced in the home should be reduced. When it comes to speed, only wireless 'N' can support our ultra fast up to 50Mb service wirelessly. And, even when broadband speeds soar to 100Mb and over in the future, our 'N' router can still handle it."
Is Time Capsule N router itself? I am sorry I am not good with all that jargon.

It's not the router that they say isn't compatible, it's the Wireless-N USB adaptor!
I've got a TimeCapsule 1gb that I just cannot use with the 50mb service!
It won't pick up a valid IP address or DNS info from the cable modem!
Plugged the supplied Netgear router in (WNR2000) and it worked straight off...
Really puzzled as to why I can't connect via ethernet using the TimeCapsule... had WiFi working once through the TimeCapsule, but still couldn't get Ethernet connection to work..
Is there any step by step guide to setting up the TimeCapsule with Virgin??

  • Airport Express and Virgin 50mb broadband

I am using Airport Express with Virgin 20mb broadband but will be upgrading to their 50mb service next week... Can the AE handle this 50mb service?

    Hi Guys
I've just posted this elsewhere and tried to continue finding a solution - I haven't changed the modem to upgrade to the 50Mb (on 20Mb now) but I assume the upgraded modem was to support that in the future... but anyway, any ideas on how I can overcome the problem below?
My previous Virgin modem (Scientific Atlanta) was connected to my Airport Time Capsule and worked perfectly well.
Virgin sent me a new modem (just better performance I understand) recently. I did say to them that I'd heard there were some problems with this new modem and the Macs, but I was assured there were no issues....why did I believe them??
They have registered the new MAC address for the new modem (that activates it) and the new modem itself is working fine (Virgin's modem, but says it is made by Ambit) and if I connect this old 10.4.11 MacBook Pro, I can get online and look for a solution (no luck so far) and create this post.
The Time Capsule (version 7.4.1) is also working fine and sending out the signal, but the two don't appear to be talking to each other!?
The Network Diagnostics report shows the three top Airport signals/settings as Green positive dots, but the ISP and internet connections below that are Red dots.
When the Airport Utility window comes up (saying it has a problem) and I run through each page to try and remedy, I get to a stage where it states:
"The Apple wireless device doesn't have any DNS server addresses and might have trouble connecting to the internet."
But there are two spaces below and one does have a DNS address in there (10.0.1.1).
But if I click continue, the problem doesn't appear to have been resolved and it justs asks me to restart the modem... I do but it makes no difference and it's just a repetetive cycle after that!
I need my computer online to work, so I am really stuck now. Virgin wipe their hands of this under the basis they do not support 3rd party routers... thanks a lot Virgin!!
So any help on this would be v.much appreciated - thanks Mac people!

  • Area upgraded to 20MB. When will I see a speed inc...

    Hi all
Just checked the speed checker on the website and apparently our area is now capable of getting 20MB broadband (well, 17MB where I am, previous 6.5MB).
Just wondering if and when I'll be upgraded? Or do I need to apply for it?
    Thanks

can I suggest you use the search facility for 'upgrade problems'  I would list some but it is easier if you search as there are a few - 21CN is very aggressive on noise on your line and what is a good line on adslmax may not necessarily be a good line initially on 21CN

  • Why does everyone at my work loose their internet connection when I update Adobe Cloud Products?

Why does everyone at my work loose their internet connection when I update Adobe Cloud Products? We are on a 20mb broadband connection and there is around 20 people using computers at my work but when I start my Adobe Cloud Product update or when I try and download my Adobe Cloud Product everyone at my work looses their internet connection and so do I. But the update keeps downloading and installing.

I am sorry FooWingLi but the difficulties you are describing sounds more like a local network configuration issue.  I would recommend working with your I.T. department to investigate this matter.

  • At end of tether, dial up was more reliable!

On Jan 4th my broadband completely died. I reported it and was told that "hopefully the problem would be fixed by Monday 9th.
On Sunday 8th an engineer arrived and spent the whole day sorting out my line................
end result was that he replaced about 20ft of cable from a junction box in my garage to the main socket and told me all was well.
After engineer had left I tried but could not get onto net, my hub (HOMEHUB 2) kept dropping out and was really slow, so much so that I was having to wait 10/15 seconds for a low res Youtube clip to buffer, bearing in mind that prior to Jan 4th we were watching BBC iplayer in HD with no problems.
Yesterday, Monday, I called to report slow speed and was told that it would take a while for the signal to get through due to the new cable.
This morning I carried out a speed test and my result was even slower that on Sunday afternoon.
I called again and was told more works were being carried out and would be completed shortly. An engineer (someone I know,) called within 40 minutes to say that ALL works were now complete and my landline should now be perfect as he had fixed a problem at the exchange.
Carried out speed test........... no change!
Phoned again and was told to hang up so that a line check could be carried out........ an engineer called within 10 minutes and told me that line was nigh on perfect. Carried out speedcheck........... no change!
    Called again.
This time I was told that scheduled works were being carried out at exchange, I tried to explain that I'd spoken to an engineer not 20 minutes before who had told me my line was good only to be told that the works were onging and would be completed by midnight. I was told to unplug my hub and not reconnect until after midnight.
It's now after midnight, I've reconnected my hub and carried out a speedcheck, guess what.................. no change!
As of now I have spent over 4 hours either on hold or speaking to someone who thinks I'm an idiot. I have changed filters, I have disconnected and reconnected many times and no change so I've had a gutfull!
This evening I asked my next door neighbour (a good mate,) to carry out a speedcheck on his broadband, here's his result..........
Tonight I carried out a speedtest, here's my result..............
Here's the details from my hub. Please bear in mind that my connection time is so low because the helpteam told me to completely unplug my hub.
We are both with BT, we are both on Option 3 20Mb broadband, we are both fed from the same box on the same telegraph pole, and presumably the same exchange so why is he receiving 4 times the download speed that I'm getting, but more to the point why oh why am I being fobbed off each time I speak to the BT Broadband helpline?
I really am getting annoyed, someone please help.

Just caried out the quiet line test on a cordless phone (it's all I've got,) and complete silence, good sign?
Over the last few days BT have told me that they have found myriad problems with my line however as of yesterday I was assured that ALL line problems were now solved, and to be honest my phone is now crystal whereas before there was a slight crackle heard during phone calls.
I fully understand that things can, and often do, go wrong but I just hate it when you know that the person on the the other end of the line is feeding you b******t and hasn't got a clue what they're going on about!
This is my 3rd year on option 3 with the 20mb and up until it went daft I was getting between 5 and 6mb download which was fine, although I'mstill puzzled as to how next door can get 12mb???
By the way I've carried out my tests on both master (I only have one socket,) and test sockets with no difference in speed.
As for "bell wire on terminal 3," sorry you've lost me, I am but a simple plumber (relying heavily on my internet to update site, receive emails etc.)
I have 4 copper wires coming into my socket, orange and white are connected the other 2 are cut short and not conected.
