20th Anniversary Macintosh (TAM) Static/Buzzing Sound

Hello There,
I have a 20th Anniversary Macintosh which is buzzing.
I know there are other posts about this but i just wanted to confirm the best solution.
The TAM switches on but takes about a minute for the light to come on and the screen to light up, at which point the buzzing starts but only sometimes.
If, once the buzzing has started, you press the TAM in the correct spot (Not on the subwoofer) the buzzing will stop for a short time, however this spot constantly moves . How should i fix this? Is it still a problem with the subwoofer joints?
The computer has OS 8.5 and has a Sonnet Crescendo Upgrade (If you need the details i will post them).
All Drivers are installed for this Upgrade.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards Toby Herbert.

Update: I have tried cleaning the connectors in the subwoofer but to no joy . What should i do now?

  • 20th Anniversary Macintosh (Tam) Fan Replacement HELP Please

    Hi
I would like to replace the original cooling fan
of my TAM (the one located near near the hard drive) because i'ts too noisy.. do you know about some quiet fan that satisfy the
parameters of the original fan (Voltage, Air Flow) that is suitable
    for replcement?
    Thank You

    Welcome!
You should hear the fan in my Beige G3 mini-tower! Sounds like practice day at an air show!
Most computer makers get fans from outside vendors. With other parts, I've looked at the part and recorded any manufacturers' information, then searched the Web for those names and/or numbers to find the specs. Once you have them, matching airflow and electrical requirements are fairly easy.
I have heard good things about Vantec fans and have their 60mm "Stealth" model set up as an auxiliary PCI card cooler in my G3; it added no additional noise, and came with all the wiring adaptors needed to make the installation more elegant. You don't always get that when buying a "fan in a bag." Another nice Vantec touch not all fans have: airflow direction and fan rotation indicators are moulded into the housing. Makes it harder to install one backwards.
Remember that some fans advertised a "quiet" do so by moving less air. Not a good thing. That why you are wise to get the original specs.

  • Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh static/buzzing on startup

I have searched in vain for the ultimate discussion on this very old problem (but new for me): My TAM, which is used __very__ infrequently, and primarily for music playback at this point, is exhibiting what has been a common issue in the past for this machine--static or buzzing (sound emanating from the subwoofer) on startup. If there is an article detailing this problem, it is very difficult to locate, so any clues will be welcome. Actually, the sound disappears if I tap moderately on the TAM main unit--the static instantly clicks off. Perhaps there is a deteriorating connection--the motherboard maybe has oxidation at the terminal connectors??......
This TAM has not been modified, has 96 megs of memory and otherwise appears to be working flawlessly.

You may want to try the Audio TuneUp 2.0. It was originally designed for Mac OS 8.1 but given your circumstance I think you should try it anyways. Some 6400 owners report still benefitting from the model specific update for that Mac too. Here's a link to the download: http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Othe r_System/AudioTuneUp2.0.img.bin.
I hope it helps to get rid of the static/buzzing noise. That's what the update was originally designed for so I think it might still work under Mac OS 9.1 too.

  • Airport Express to play music through 20th Anniversary Mac?

I'd like to be able to play music through the Bose sound system in my G3-upgraded 20th Anniversary Mac.  I've used a very early version of iTunes but it annoyingly pauses fairly frequently while playing for some reason.  Since I have an early Airport Express and have an Ethernet adaptor in the TAM I wondered if it's possible to connect the TAM via cable to the Airport Express and stream music from an iMac connected wirelessly to the Airport.  It seems a shame not to utilize the Bose speaker system for music.  Thanks for any ideas and suggestions.

As far as I know this isn't possible. I might try some stuff using my TAM (although results may very, mine isn't a production model) to see about figuring something out. If the computers sit close enough together you might be able to run a 3.5mm(1/8") headphone cable between the iMac's audio out and the TAM's line in, that or make use of the FM tuner and listen to some awesome FM stations.
Now that I think of that you can invest in something like the link I'll add at the bottom of this, connect it to the speaker port of the iMac then use the tuner on the TAM to tune into the frequency of it. This would also allow the connecting of something such as an iPod.

  • Audio line-in buzzing sound

hello guys ! i just bought a macbook last month and currently still learning on how to get used to mac.as a guitarist im very exited to try out the GarageBand.after i plug in the audio jack from my guitar to the audio line-in port,i found out that there is no sound from the strings of my guitar.there is only the buzzing sound.the input level also shows a not static level instead of steady level.what do i have to do friends ??
forgive me of my language as english is not my main language
    thanks !!

    Hello,
Most likely, the output from your guitar is too low and therefore sounds like silence from your Macbook. You will need to amplify your guitar output to work with your MacBook. Since you are a guitarist, you might already have the right equipment--connect your guitar to a preamp, and then to the macbook. If you don't have a preamp, I think you can plug your guitar into a regular amp, and then connect that to the macbook.
    * There are two kinds of input signals, distinguished by levels. Commonly, they are called "mic-level" and "line-level." Most guitars pickups will output mic-level, which needs to be amplified to line-level to work with computers. MacBooks only accept line-level inputs.

I have used an acoustic guitar w/ preamp with Garage band on macbook, so I can tell you that it definitely works.
    Rock on!

  • 20th anniversary mac service parts

I'm curious if anyone has ideas on how I might find a CD-ROM to replace the CD-ROM in a 20th Anniversary Mac.
I have a TAM a friend used, and I'm trying to ready it for sale.  If you put in a CD, you hear the CD clicking, but the CD doesn't spin.  I've tried manually moving the spindle (as some older CD-Drives of that nature would sometimes have lubrication problems), but no luck.
I've searched the web all over and cannot find if the service parts may even exist.  The drive is unique in that it opens to reveal the disc in place (rather than having a slot, a caddy, or a door that holds the disc). So even though that machine has a lot in common with the Powerbook 3400, the CD-ROM drive is different.
    Ideas?

I don't know if you still need help on fixing your TAM CD device. I had the same problem.
As you know, CD devices for the TAM are rarely available on eBay and cost a fortune (last auction I saw maybe went for 200 bucks or more). The Apple 600i SCSI CD-ROM (tray-loading) internally is very similar to the design of the TAM CD.. They regularly pop up on eBay for $10 to $20. Model CR-504-C appears to be the closest match.
I bought one for $10, opened it up and discarded the casing. The circuit board is identical except for a couple wires controlling opening/closing the loading tray, and an IC chip. The motor mechanism is an identical match. I swapped the motor assemblies (carriage and all) after transferring over the rubber grommets for the TAM. Put my TAM back together, and the CD works flawlessly!
If your problem is not with the motor carriage, then you can try using the circuit board after swapping the IC chip. If it's a problem with the chip, this solution may not work. Seems to me, there is a much higher possiblity of the motor assembly going bad than with the chip.
There is currently an auction on eBay for several of these devices for $15 with free shipping. Can't hurt, only $15. Search eBay for AppleCD 600i CR-504-C. - Fred

  • Screensaver for 20th Anniversary Mac

Hello, I'm looking for a screensaver for my old and bautyful 20th Anniversary Mac. Somebody knows where to find a screesaver (aquarium style...) and if it works with OS 7..6.1 ? Thanks

    rmpostal,
After Dark was the most widely used screen saver.  A google search revealed several options.  Email if you need a disk copy.
    Here is an OS-X version:

I did not spend a lot of time searching for the older downloads because it would be faster to walk upstairs and copy it off the TAM.

  • IPod makes buzzing sound when charging

    Hello,
When I connect my iPod touch 5g to either a wall charger or to my computer it makes a buzzing sound, like static. Sometimes it is brief other times it won't stop unless I shutdown the iPod. Why is this happening?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Try another cable
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Buzzing sound appeared again- hp pavilion ultrabook 14-b006sa

hp pavilion ultrabook 14-b006sa- windows 8
I ve tried the Troubleshooting tool in Windows 8,but there each speaker seems to work properly.
I have instablished the most recent Audio driver update from HP, 'IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver', as you had told me few months ago, but the problem still exists. i had followed as well the steps on the document 'No Sound from Speakers (Windows 8)' but did not help.
    Please Help!!!!!!
    Thank you

Hi kp161. I have reviewed your Previous Thread. If the basic troubleshooting has not produced a permanent resolution I will need more information. You mentioned that the buzzing sound appears from various sources. I want to use YouTube as our starting point. Find a video that you get the buzzing sound in, and note the time in the video where the sound occurs. If you play it again, does the buzz happen at the same point again? Does it happen through the speakers? Does it happen through headphones?
    Let me know.

I am having the same problem I have over 11.5 GB of .tmp files, many 1000s. Here is a thread I have found with some more info:

That thread is almost a year old so I'm not holding out hope for a fix from apple. I'm going to try deleting them and see how it goes...

  • Iphone 4 makes an continuous intermittent vibration/buzzing sound when plugged into any of computer's 3 usb ports; does not show in itunes or Windows Vista device manager. No problem charging the phone with other power sources. What's going on?

This problem happened intermittently in the past but now happens every time I plug in the phone. I suspect it might be a problem with my computer, an Acer Aspire 4530, perhaps with it's charging function via usb ports? The phone makes the same buzzing sound twice when I connect to other power sources, but continues when connected to computer. I have this issue even when the phone is 100% charged.

  • Dynex 32 Led LCD tv 720p buzzing sound

I've had this tv less then a week. When it's off It makes an annoying buzzing sound unless you cut out the power to the tv. Model number dx-32e250a1. I contacted dynex directly they told me its normal and to unplug the tv and hold the power button for a minute. I've also been reading people's complaints and there's a lot of people in the same boat as me. I'm wondering if this will lead me problems down the road if i keep it. Or should I return it? It's in my room and connected to a strip. I just cut the power so I can sleep without the noise. It's my only complaint with it. Otherwise great tv for the buck =\

Really depends on how loud the buzzing is. If it intrudes on TV volume at normal levels, then take it back.
