21.5" iMac with or without dedicated video?

I have seen a number of people pose this question on the boards but I didn't really get a clear answer for my own question. I soon plan to jump into the world of apple by getting my very first Mac system (I have used a number of different models through work but never owned). I am looking to buy one of the new iMacs to replace a far outdated system we currently have working as our home computer.
The system will primarily be used for your typical stuff - internet browsing, word processing, perhaps some photo editing (but nothing major) so I wonder whether the difference in price from the low end 21.5" model to the 21.5" model with dedicated video is worth it?
Looking over some reviews, it seems that all the models perform in a similar range except for frames per second measures during game playing. However, I don't intend to do much, if any, game playing on the system.
Right now I feel like the dedicated video is not necessary but I wonder whether I will feel the same way down the road. Better safe than sorry?
Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

Based on what you say any current iMac would do an excellent job for you. If your foresee doing work in the future that will tax the graphics more (3D gaming, rendering, graphics work etc.) then upgrade the graphics card. However for what you're currently doing you should be very pleased with any of the graphics.
That being said, if you tend to keep computers 3 years or more then investing in something more powerful today will make it more future proof in years to come.
Regards,
Roger

  • 24" Intel iMac with Samsung T220 as second monitor

    Hello!
Recently got an iMac with a Radeon 4850 video card which I am generally very pleased with, however..
Before I got it I used a Samsung T220 as my main monitor which provided a crisp and colourful display. When I got the iMac I decided to use it as a second monitor so ordered a miniDisplay port to DVI adaptor.
Now the issue is that while it appears to be allowing the T220 to output to it's maximum resolution (1680 x 1050) the picture still appears to be blurry. On top of this the colours appear washed out and the contrast (20,000:1) seems very low compared to when I used the monitor with my PC.
I've spent hours attempting to calibrate the monitor and playing around with colours and settings. I am using the DVI-D cable supplied with the Samsung.
Any thoughts? Do I need to update any drivers or software or is it something more fundamental.

Some display settings are stored in PRAM, so if you have not done so already, try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If there is a reset button on the display (often a recessed button), or a reset-to-default command in the display's on-screen menu, try using that as well.
There was one firmware update involving that video card
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/iMac_EFI_Firmware_Update_14
It may already be installed. You can check your current Boot ROM Version by running System Profiler and selecting Hardware in the sidebar.

If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

  • Will the 1299 Imac with the cheapest things Run games without lag?

I am wondering if the cheapest Imac with the cheapest things on the setup will run computer games such as minecraft without lag?

Will be using it just to soley play video games. Also any rumors on when the new imac could come out soonest/ latest date
Yes it will play games just fine. Per the Terms of Use we cannot discuss future products on this forum.
You would only need antivirus software if you run MS Windows and only for the Windows partition. Because there are no viruses for OS X it's unnecessary for OS X. The good news is even if your MS Windows partition becomes totally diseased this will in no way affect OS X.
    I would recommend looking through:

  • I purchased a new iMac with latest iLife suite, however, IMovie will not read my videos.  I deleted a 3iVX file that was not working but nothing happens now. Help

I just purchased a new iMac with the latest iLife suite. As part of the migration process in setting up the new machine the 3Ivx video codec was brought onto the new machine as well as my old movies.  When I tried opening the movies iMovie crashed and told me it had a problem with the 3IVX video codec, in doing some research I found that the 3IVX video codec created a problem so I deleted it and downloaded Perian 123.  The Perian 123 works well with Quicktime but iMove does not now see my old movies.  At this point I cannot open any of my movies.  Can anyone help?  Thanks

There also might be a more updated, compatible 3ivx codec you can install, or just try re-installing a newly downloaded version of of the same old codec: http://www.3ivx.com/download/macos.html
Otherwise download and install MPEG Streamclip: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
In iMovie hold down CTRL and click on the clips that don't open. Choose Reveal in Finder. Convert those files by dragging them into the window of converter program, and save as Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). That format is native to iMovie and will work perfectly.

  • Will i be able to listen to music, watch videos and take pictures and sync with itunes without a sim in my locked iphone 5?

Will i be able to listen to music, watch videos and take pictures and sync with itunes without a sim in my locked iphone 5?

You will need a SIM to activate it. There is no way around that. The SIM does not have to be active, but it must be from the correct carrier if the phone is carrier locked. Once activated, it can be removed and used like an iPod touch, but if you ever have to restore or update iOS, you will need the SIM to re-activate it.

You can find the serial number either in About this Mc in the Menu bar under the , or it should be on a sticker under the foot of the machine.
If you have the install discs, try booting from them, holding down the c key and then using Disk Utility to check the drive.
You can also boot into Safe mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
       1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
       2. Press the power button.
       3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
       4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
    Please post back with results,
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

  • Can I upgrade the video card in my 2009 iMac with the new ATI 2 GB VRAM card?

I am looking for more video RAM for video, CGI and animation work in Blender.
I may purchase Final Cut Pro X in the near future and I need to make sure there is enough video RAM to be able to work with this version of FInal Cut.
I, currently, use Final Cut 4 Express and though this runs fine, through Rosetta, on my current setup, I fear this much newer version may need more graphics power than I have, now.
I, also noticed some lag when working with Blender.
No where near as much graphics or video/animation lag as when I using Blender on my old G4m but it's still slightly noticeable.
I realize I may have to install this myself.
Can I purchase, somewhere, Apple's 1 or 2 GB ATI card seperately or from a third party vendor and install, myself.
I have seen posts that tell that the 27 inch iMac has a removable video card and is not soldered to the logic board like in the 21 inch models.
If true, is there a complete procedure for the iMac breakdown, installation of the video card and reassembly procedure?
My iMac only has the stock 256 MB VRAM graphics card.
If the take down looks more difficult than I feel I can attempt, I have an Apple authorized reseller, repair facilty here, in my area.
Could I purchase the card and have them install it for a fee?
ThanX for all of the info and advice, in advance
    Michel

You will need to check if your model originally was offered with a custom build option that included a different graphics card. If so, you may be able to have it done; here is a fellow who managed to do it on a 2011 iMac (graphics card not soldered) and the model originally offered a better card option:

    Is this yours:
    http://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-3.06-27-inch-alumin um-late-2009-specs.html
In particular, click on the link in this section of the specs:
I'd check either with Apple and/or an AASP to see if it can be done with yours or if yours is one of those where it is part of the Logic Board/soldered to it.

    Hal

Aha OK then, that should work fine.
The only snag might be, if your missing the original thermal sensor from the original 24" Hard Drive.
Then again, you should be able to use the one that came from the original 17" Hard Drive.

  • I need to get back individually erased photos and videos from my iMac with no backups to help. Please help

i need to get back individually erased photos and videos from my iMac with no backups to help. this is an attempt to consolidate all my data, new and old so I can uninstall Maverick and put Mountain Lion back on my iMac.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the files have been overwritten and you don't have a backup, they're gone.
If they have not been overwritten, then there are third-party apps (for example Techtool Pro 7 ) with data recovery functions that might be able to retrieve some or all of your files.
    Backing up is good.

    Hi,
I did download this from the App Store and when I use The Unarchiver it takes a couple of minutes to convert and it comes out as a DVDRip and will not open. Then a window copens and suggest it may be found at the App Store and when I click OK it "Your Search has no Results."

  • Can I use a late '06 24" iMac with a bad video board as a monitor?

I have a late '06, 24", 2.16ghz iMac with a video board that works unless it is over-tasked and heats up.  Then the screen glitches and finally the computer freezes up or crashes.  Is it possible to use it as a monitor for a mac mini or other computer?

Some people have turned old iMac LCDs into Monitors...

I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie.  Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks for the reply.  I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long.  After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix.  I strongly suggest not to buy this product.
