21.5 inch iMac yellow screen issue

I have a late 2012 iMac (21.5inch). I thought 21.5 models were immune to this issue, but I noticed bottom half of the screen is showing some yellow tint compared to upper half. I thought it was due to the angle of the screen and lighting in my room but that changed when I put my MacBook pro right next to my iMac. Compared to my mid 2009 MacBook Pro, the iMac's screen has a definite yellower time to it..
How much will it cost to replace the screen to eliminate the yellow tint? Please, no replies about taking my iMac to Apple store or calling them. I've already called several different Apple stores, and they have no idea. And please, no Applecare answers or "expensive" answers. I just want exact numbers.

The in-store inspection, product specialist or in-house expert, then technical testing to diagnose the exact cause of the issue, then if done in-house, a repair sequence initiated with an open estimate on what replacement parts would actually be needed, could alter the original best-guess somewhat.
A simple backlight or inverter issue may be all that is causing the symptom. Nobody can simply give you a base price of one size fits all. They will not just 'replace a display' since the panel is more than just one part. If a voltage variation is the cause of partial tint or backlight color, then that will be part of the inspection and diagnosis; this may be in a shop for weeks.
Please stick to one question on the same topic

You appear to have an issue with Apple, so there are
a few good links to their main web site. You can go
and Locate an authorized service nearby, contact an
Apple authorized representative, etc, there. We who
reply here have no direct connection, nor do we have
any authority, cannot cite prices or give quotes, etc.
And our time is our own, individually. We're not Apple.
You will have to contact Apple. You have a computer.
I will not do that for you, from my residence, half a
world away where I have no more access to a Store
than a moose, or a ptarmigan, outside my door.
Good luck.

Yes, I know it's free if I have Applecare. I just want to know how much Apple will charge if I don't have Applecare.

If you don't have AppleCare, it will be probably pretty pricey (just to get them to open it up!).
If any past experience with iMacs doing similar things, it is probably one of the backlights they use for the screen.
That AppleCare does pay for itself when things like this happen.
Except for RAM, there are no user-serviceable parts in iMacs.

  • Yellow Screen Issue Can be Resolved

I have resolved my yellow screen issue and improved my display greatly by doing the following:
    Settings>Brightness
    Turn Auto Brightness to "Off"
Increase the the brightness by moving the slider to the right.
I had a first gen iPhone and when I saw the display on my 3G- my initial response was - This screen display must be defective. Now I know that the factory setting is just to low and my display is fine.
    Message was edited by: lmiksch

So I've heard a bunch of things about how the yellow screen is supposed to be the way it is, which is fine, but does anyone have anything to say about how not all the screens are the same tint? My boyfriend and I both got iPhones yesterday, and each one has a slightly different tinting to it.
There are (at least) two versions of the firmware, with slightly different colors.

  • IMac, 24-inch, Early 2009, screen issue, screenshot attached, help... ...anyone?

lines on the screen are leftovers from firefox and a flash game... any way to 'refresh' the screen?
or is this a signal my mac is ready for retirement ?

    Thanks Mike...

  • Green/Yellow screen issue? (Not blobs, whole screen discolouration)

    Hey there,
I know there has been many websites posting about the yellow blobs that have been appearing on the new iPhone 4's retina display as a result of manufacturing issue.
However, my entire screen seems to have a much 'cooler' tint that my previous iPhone 3GS or MacBook Pro screen. This is my second iPhone 4 (the first didn't vibrate) and the screen appears the same - unfortunately, I'm a tad OCD and would just like to confirm this is how the screen should appear. When I visited the Apple Store, I didn't have time to compare to other handsets on display.
It's not dreadfully green/yellow, but white appears much cooler than I'd imagined. The 'blue' top bar on apps such as Safari, Messaging and Email appears more green than blue.

It doesn't appear to be in blobs as the sites describe though.
On a pure white screen, the entire screen shows no trace of defects - it is all the same colour with no localised discolouration, it appears white. It just appears as if the screen itself is 'cooler' (I can't find any other word to describe it) - it just appears to add a greenish hue to the screen, specifically items that appear grey, blue or green.
I'm just curious if this how the Retina Display is supposed to be? I know with each successive iPhone, the screen became warmer and more yellow, I was wondering if Apple have decided to go cooler in this approach.

  • Something That May Be Interesting About The Yellow Screen Issue

I was comparing my 3G and 3GS and have also been experimenting with looking at the color of the 3GS in different lighting environments. There was one situation where it appeared to be a little yellowish or warmer than the 3G, but mainly it is just not as bright as the 3G.
I compared them again this morning and the 3G seemed much brighter. Both had brightness set to about half way and auto brightness was set to on (on both phones). I decided to set the auto brightness to off (on both phones), and noticed that the 3G display dimmed and the 3GS display brightened. Now they look so close to identical that I can't really tell the difference between them at all.
I have noticed that a lot of folks seem to be having this issue and would like to ask that if you are having this issue... Please do a similar comparison and post your observations in this thread.
I notice that the display on these phones change in different kinds of light, and have read that the 3GS now has auto white balance, so maybe it has something to do with this.
I am not saying that this is the problem, but just something that I have observed over the pas couple of days.

I've noticed this as well. I posted a thread about it but got very little response. So I'm not sure if were experiencing an isolated issue or if it just doesn't bother anyone else. I'm planning on taking my phone in to a genius soon for the weird tri-tone & other alerts problem & was going to also ask about the screen then. My screen NEVER appears yellow, but it is so dark & dreary when compared to my 3G both using the same settings.
If you want to see something stranger, go into a completely dark room, like a hall bathroom, unlock & open both phones, notice the brightness (both phones set to auto-brightness). Next turn on the light & watch both phones brighten up, this is one of the very FEW times my 3GS actually has what I feel is a proper brightness level. Unfortunately it goes away once you lock the phone again. It would be great if this was fixed with a software update, but what if it's a phone problem & were past the 15 days? I'm going to take my old phone & compare to the other 3GS in the Apple store.

  • 2007 24" Imac yellowing screen

    Hi,
I have purchased a 2007 Apple Imac 24" and the screen is yellowing. Does apple have a return policy for the replacement after the warranty...

this mac is 6 going on 7 years old and you are talking about a warranty?

  • Imac g3 screen issues. (after attempting to upgrade.)

    Hello!
I was installing mac osx on my failry old imac g3. It told me that my firmware needed to be installed. So I clicked restart. When it restarted, my screen didn't show up at all! I restarted again and my screen was faint, crooked and blue. Now I can't even run my original os9!
Did I delete some kind of screen setting!?
    How should I fix this!?

For a firmware update to be applied to such a machine, the machine has
to be running/booted into OS 9.1/9.2; and support for the USB pen/flash
drive would have to be working inside the computer to import from one.
If the iMac G3 has FireWire ports, you could use a FW cable from another
Mac and use that Mac to import the firmware update into the hard drive of
the other computer; or use disk utilities of the proper type to attempt to
repair the old iMac's hard disk drive before going further. Could be not
only is the logicboard in jeopardy, the drive may also have issues.
[In some cases, a dead or weak clock battery can also be a problem in
the process of firmware updates and PRAM matters.]
The incompatibility of pre-Firmware updated iMac G3s to properly
display video is part of the symptom you get to experience in a sit-
uation where the OSX was installed (or X disc was used to boot the
computer, before firmware was updated in the running OS9 system.)
A different hard drive with the OS9 system for the iMac installed on it
with the Firmware Update on it, and put into the iMac could help in the
process; but you'd have to run the Firmware update after the computer
itself was physically installed in the drive to flash the computer's ROM
and upgrade the bootROM firmware to 4.1.9 or whatever your's needs.
A universally recorded CD-R would work in both a Mac and a PC; Mac
users have been making these for years, usually on a Mac, of course!

    There are a few different approaches to attempting to solve this;
    one company has a special process and wanted to sell something;
this following quote is someone's experience from the above link.
"...I thought, what the heck, it's good as dead already... why not try one
more thing? So, I held down the Programmer's button on the side of the
iMac while starting it up.. and bingo! It didn't shut down this time! The
screen was black, but it was up and running to some extent. I hooked up
a PC monitor to the iMac and saw the Open Firmware screen. This was
pretty exciting, until I realized that it was not accepting any input from the
keyboard or mouse. What now? I stuck my OS 9.2 CD into the slot, did
the "3 finger salute" reboot, held down the C key and prayed harder than I
have in a while.... and eureka! The CD booted the iMac successfully! I
was able to do a clean install of the OS to upgrade it from 9.0 to 9.2,
restart the Mac; then upgrade its firmware..." -- may not be repeatable.
Anyway, hopefully you get more feedback on this and a resolution solution!

  • Has Apple said anything about the yellow screen issue?

Because I just walked into an AT&T store for something and I looked at two demo units, both at the same brightness and settings, identical everything (3GS 16gb black), and one was yellow as ****, and one was pure white. Mine, unfortunately, is yellow.
The salesman also thought it was weird and said that if Apple would exchange it, I should do it. But since this would be a defect, I technically have the whole year, right?
    Thanks in advance.

I've been following this topic a bit since I got my 3GS 32gb right on the release date through AT&T pre-order.
I never thought anything about the color temp of my screen when I got it. I thought it looked just fine. I pulled out my old 1st gen iPhone and powered it up to compare the color temp of the two screens. Sure enough, my new 3GS had a definite warmer tone. But it was OK. White is white if you're only looking at one screen. In fact, I think the warmer tone looks better, I guess.
The other day I stopped in to my local Apple Store to pick up an accessory. After I finished I remembered to compare my 3GS with a 3GS on display. Sure enough, every 3GS on display had the bluer looking cast as opposed to my 3GS's yellow cast.
I got the attention of a salesman, resplendent in his orange t-shirt. He came over and I showed him what I was about to get at. The difference in color temp between their display and my phone. He played dumb and that really ****** me off. He acted as if he had never heard anything about varying color temps on the screens. He said "Oh...do you mind waiting a few minutes and is it OK if I take your phone to someone out back?". "Sure, go ahead" I replied. So off he went with my phone.
He reappeared a few minutes later claiming that he asked the manager about this and the manager compared his own phone with mine and that the MANAGER'S phone was even warmer than mine. I already knew that there was no chance I was going to get my phone replaced. I did'nt even really want it replaced, but I was being treated like a dummy by this guy and his manager. I then said to him "Well, in that case, Apple's quality control really *****. It's like saying that the factory that produced your orange t-shirt can't get the color straight from your t-shirt to that guy's t-shirt over there" as I pointed to another salesman a few feet away. The other salesman looked at me and smiled. He knew where I was coming from but of course couldn't get involved. My salesman replied, "Well the iPhone is made in different factories and there are also differences in the glass from factory to factory. I can set up an appointment at the Genius Bar for you if you like." Like that would do any good. There's no color temp setting on the phone. What good would that do?
I knew the whole thing was pointless and it didn't really matter. Granted, it may have been cool to have a replacement with the bluer tone, but it was no big deal.
What ticked me off the most was that I was treated like an idiot. The salesman wouldn't even acknowledge the issue. As if Apple had communicated to the staff not to acknowledge any problem issue with the iPhone.
OK....it's a mass produced cell phone...made in China at that. So I guess QC is going to be pretty bad in areas like this. I'm just very suprised that Apple would be like that. It's one of the reasons I switched from PC's to Mac many years ago. I thought Apple cared a bit more about their clientel.
So please Mr. Jobs and crew. Don't treat me like an idiot.

  • IMac Having screen issues when in sleep mode

    Hey everyone,
Does anyone have this problem, when my computer goes into sleep mode the screen turns like this...

Thanks for the suggestion, I have firstly gone through the procedure suggested in the article 'Resetting the system management Controller' before actually resetting it.  Should the iMac fail to come out of sleep mode then I shall reset as you suggest.

  • IMAC 21 Screen issues

I have a Intel based IMac that ramdonly has the screen start to look like someone took a square and rectangle cookie cutter to it and made a puzzle of it, with all the pieces mixed up. Goes away after a reboot, but has been happening randomly lately, Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I would recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, run it at least 2-3 times. If the system reports any errors then write down the errors and take the machine to your local Apple Store or AASP for repair.

  • New iMac 27" screen issues!!!

Does anyone experiences this situation on their iMac with new "Screen LaminationProcess" ?
After leaving a white image still for couple minutes on the screen (Example: Web Site), a sort of halo remains.... This is noticeable when I working on applications with gray GUI's like Adobe Photoshop, Aperture, iMovie... pretty much any application.
I am kind of upset because the computer is only 1 month old and I just noticed this problem. Besides, there are some awkward brighter spots on the edges of the display… it seems like there is a leak of light from the inside out. That cannot be shown on the screen shots but they are bery anoying when watching a movie... ;(

You really should call AppleCare first.  Let them be aware of the problems you are having.  You will get a case number.  Keep it in a safe place.  It just may come in handy if the exact same problems crop up in the future after your warranty runs out.

  • Late-2013 15 inch MBP Retina screen issue (one part whiter than rest, see photo)

    Hi all.
I've literally had my new 15-inch mbp for a less than a month (got it Oct. 31, 2013). My screens already jacked up. Looks like the lower right corner of the display has suffered some sort of area-wide color change, so that the area appears white in color than the rest of the screen. I have no idea how this happened. Any thoughts?
It's still under warranty so i'll just take it in, but what could this possibly be?
    Thanks

It also seems to be changing shape, and getting a few flecks of the old brightness level over time. Sees second photo taken two hours after the first photo.

  • Fix that works for the new 21inch 27 inch Imacs Choppy Video Issue. ******

I found the fix on the World of Warcraft forums. The problem is with Air Port. Disable Air Port and plug your computer directly into your Router. My games and video run great. I'm getting 60fps in World of Warcraft and all the flash videos work great. Its the best solution until they fix the issue.

It sure did work... Hard wired to AirPort extreme, turned AirPort off and connected through Ethernet in network system preferences. Able to play videos from YouTube Hulu everywhere....Where is our update??
