23.976 Quicktime exports one frame short

Hi,
I'm having a recurring problem with 23.976 fps exports missing the last frame of any comp. I'm working with prores 4444 files shot at 23.976, comp settings also 23.976, footage interpreted correctly at 23.976. When I export to quicktime in any codec at 23.976 the exported clip is one frame short.
This isn't a framerate issue as far as I can tell as all previous frames match the original footage, also an image sequence export will produce the correct number of frames. It's just not exporting the last frame. Is anyone else having this problem?
Obviously the workaround is to extend every comp by a frame before render, or always render an image sequence, but as I'm working on a show with an extremely high number of shots to turnaround and all have to be imported back into the edit at Avid DNX36 offline codec quality, this seems like a much more time consuming (and storage space consuming!) solution to what is an obvious glitch.
Can anyone help? A solution will save me weeks of time over the coming six months!

It's probably just a counting error.  AE, like many applications that work with video, begins with frame ZERO, not frame one.
Count the number of digits in the following list: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.  Even though the highest value is nine, the number of digits is ten.  Thus, in AE, close to one second of 23.976 fps video is contained in frames 00-23, and not 00-24... which would be twenty-FIVE frames.

  • Shot one frame short after import

    I'm having a weird problem with 10bit uncompressed quicktimes imported into FCP being one frame shorter then they should be. I'm working with OS 10.4.11, FCP 6.0.3, Quicktime 7.4.5. The shots were originally shot on 35MM film then telecined at 1080 23.98 on HDCAM. I digitized them on a Kona LH at 1080 23.98 at 10 bit uncompressed. When my edit was completed I exported shots as self contained 1080 23.98 10-bit uncompressed quicktime files which we passed on to the VFX company on a FWHD. They did their work in Nuke/Shake and delivered the finished shots as self contained 1080 23.98 10-bit uncompressed quicktime files. After moving the files onto my media drive and then importing them into my project I find some of the shots are one frame shorter then the source shot. If I take one of the shots from the VFX render, open it with quicktime 7.4.5, and then save as an image sequence, the resulting folder imported into FCP and lined up with the VFX quicktime is now the correct length. It's one frame longer then the VFX quicktime but now matches the frame count of the source shot. I also opened the offending shot in a few other apps (After Effects 7 and Kona DPX translator) where they were the correct length
    I suppose this could be related to the 23.98 frame rate however the compositors were working with quicktime files sent from FCP at the same frame rate.

    Depending on what software the VFX house used, the media may have been modified in a way that is causing QT to mis-interpret the frame count, frame rate, or duration of the clips. It sounds like the frames are all there, but QT thinks the clip is 1 frame shorter than it's supposed to be. The media is ok, and it's just the QT metadata that is funky.
    The frame sequence process sounds clunky, but I bet there is another batch process you can do with FCP or compressor to fix the files. These would still require exporting a new set of files and reconnecting. Sometimes placing each clip in a sequence and re-exporting will restore the missing frame(s). You can also use dumpster to edit the QT metadata, but this is also a one-file-at-a-time process.

    I the older version of Premiere  , it was possibel til export  a frame to  fileformat as jpg, bmp and more, but how can I do this in PP CS4 ??

    One little tip, with this process in CS4.1: In earlier versions, one had the option of also Importing that still into a Project. That function has been lost now. If you DO want your still into your Project, just make careful note of its location and name, and then Import it.
    I did not like the Import into Project being the default, but I also liked to have the option to do it, if needed. Maybe CS4.2, or CS5 will add the option back?

  • AE Bug - 23.976 Quicktime Exports have 29.97 timecode readout

    I've found a repeatable problem that seems to be an AE CS5 bug -- can anyone confirm this for me?
    Render a 23.976 comp as a quicktime movie, then open it in QuickTime Player (v7, not X, as X doesn't show timecode).
    GET-INFO (CMD-I) shows the proper 23.98 framerate and duration.
    Viewing TimeCode track, it's in base 30, and skips every 5th frame number.
    Viewing Frames track, it skips every 5th frame number (and thus the final frame number is wrong)
    Seems to be AE-related, since sending this same screwy-timecode movie through Compressor gives you a movie with proper timecode track.
    Also, rendering a straight 24fps movie out of AE has proper 24fps timecode.
    Can anyone confirm this is a bug?  Has Adobe acknowledged it?

    Taking it into FCP, I see similar mixed results:
    - In the bin, it shows 23.98 fps framerate (correct), just like CMD-I in QT Player shows the correct framerate.
    - Opening the clip and watching its timecode or frame number display while stepping through it, it still appears as base 30 with missing frame numbers.  The actual frame numbers that are skipped in FCP are different from those skipped in QT Player, though -- so it does seem to be an attempt to correct the timecode to keep up with the framerate.
    Exporting the movie from QT Player strips the timecode track, but the frame numbers are made correct.  Recompressing through Compressor fixes the timecode track and frame numbers.
    Seems like a problem out of AE to me.

  • AppleScript for QuickTime export of frames

    I would like to get an AppleScript to --
    1) Take a folder full of QT movies (slideshows), and for each movie create a new folder with the name of the orig movie (e.g. "nelson.mov" --> "nelson" foldername), and for each movie --
    2) export a series of frames from each 30 - 200 second QuickTime narrated slideshow movie (typically 4-8 frames per movie), with each frame saved with name nnnnnn.jpg, where "nnnnn" is the TIME for that frame in the movie, into the folder for that movie
    3) export the audio track as a .aif audio file into the folder for that movie
    Although I have done some AppleScripting, the above is Way Beyond my expertise...

    Most of these AppleScripts still work with QT 7 and Tiger. Some are "broken" but fixable.
    You may also want to look toward Automator (part of Tiger) that can help you write (no real writing) Workflows and Contextual menu apps that you can invoke with a few mouse clicks.

  • SWF movie export on frame-by-frame basis WITH actionscript

    I know they're two ways of exporting flash movies:
    Export the whole timeline. This only allows timeline animations and gets messy because you have to cram up everything on the main timeline.
    Realtime-Export via Quicktime. This is a "full blown" export, but heavily dependent on CPU power or speed of harddrive, depending on resolution.
    I also work a lot with music programs and there is an option called "mixdown". This will render the whole song - as fast as the processor is capable - to a WAV-file. So time doesn't matter anymore, notes don't get skipped, etc.
    I would like to see something like this in flash, too. WITH actionscript.
    I just want flash to export one frame for each "onEnterFrame" event, NOT when the timer tells you, it's time for a "next frame". So this would mean not to trigger the onEnterEvent when the appropiate time has passed, but to trigger it, when the next frame can be exported.
    Libraries like "TweenLite/Max" are capable of doing frame-based animations, independent from the timer, so everything on that end is pretty fine.
    Would be so great if that was possible in any way.
    Is it already in CS5? Or maybe an option in CS6... argh, so many years to wait...
    until then, I have to measure the fps, look out for the lowest number, export at THAT framerate (in most of the cases just 4 or 5 fps, even on a very fast computer - just because 2 or 3 frames happen to render slower than the other 200) and afterwarts set it to 25 again (I use Blender to do this)

  • Quicktime export looks squashed.

    I imported several powerpoint slides converted to jpegs at 720X540. The pixel aspect ratio was square. The final destination for this presentation is youtube so i'm assuming that I want square pixel output in FCP. Everything looks fine in FCP but quicktime export ends up short and fat.
    Help me, I 'm a noob.

    You need to understand how fcp and digital video works. Digital video has rectangular pixels, digital graphic files for computers use square pixels. A standard NTSC DV sequence in FCP is 720x480 with rectangular pixels. If you want this to display correctly on a computer screen you need to distort it to 720x540. While you are working within fcp, everything looks fine. And when you edit a 720x540 file into a 720x480 sequence, fcp will adjust it automatically. So the trick is when you export your final sequence from fcp to alter the pixel dimensions so they are correct, for example 720x540.

  • Quicktime export contains random grey frames

    Lately, doing a straight Quicktime export (not Quicktime conversion) is resulting in movies with random grey frames in them, lasting about 12 frames or so each. This is HD footage, shot on the Panasonic DVX-100. This only seems to happen when exporting certain sequences, but I haven't been able to establish a pattern as to why it's happening on certain exports but not on others. It's all footage shot, ingested, and edited on sequences with the same exact settings.
    It's only been happening since upgrading to QT 7.5, but the other computer in the office also upgraded, and it hasn't encountered this problem, and can export the same sequences I'm having problems with just fine.
    Has anyone else experienced this, or offer a solution?

    This is a Final Cut issue. If it were only a drive/scsi issue the errors would also be there in the animation codec as well. The bad frames ONLY occur when doing a quicktime export [DVCPRO HD 720](referenced, render all frames, and self contained). I'm not dismissing the fact that there very well may be a drive causing problems (G-SPEED XL12).
    The bad frames do not occur any other time. I render plenty of things in the exact same codec over the network to the raid from AE and Motion and never ever have a problem.
    One thing I am doing differently now is long form projects. The projects having issues are a one hour show and a two hour+ show. I don't have this problem with commercials or other small packages. It also doesn't matter if it's a random 10 sec section exported or the whole program.
    This is what I'm working with:
    HVX200 and other mixed footage
    FCP and QT last updated in early july (no internet connection)
    G-SPEED XL12
    Fibre channel to one station that also acts as a file server
    gigabit to one station from the file server
    trunked gigabit to another station from the server (seperate NIC)
    All three stations exhibit the same problem including the station connected via Fibre Channel
    Other people are having the same problem as I've found by searching. The earliest report of this specific issue I've found so far was stated around Jan of this year. But there are more reports from this summer.

  • How to export still frame from Quicktime movie?

    Hello folks
    I often need to use a still frame from a quicktime movie as an image file to work with in PhotoShop for windows.
    If I export a frame via the export command and choose "Movie to picture" I end up with a .pct file, that Photoshop will not open.
    I can open the .pct file with the Quicktime PictureViewer and then export it from that app as i.e. a JPEG-file, but I would like to avoid that extra step and just export a usable file straight from QT.
    Anybody know how that can be done?

    Same problem here - no matter whether I choose Photo - JPEG or PNG format as the "compressor", QT 7 Pro wants to save with a .pct extension, and changing it to .jpg or .png extension fails to open.
    The two workarounds I've found are:
    1. Save it in Photo - JPEG or PNG format with a .pct extension, open with Photoshop CS4 or below, save to desired format.
    One may be able to accomplish the same using Preview instead of Photoshop, but on my Snow Leopard machine I get the error "The PICT file format is not supported in 64-bit mode. Try selecting "Open in 32 Bit Mode" in the Finder's info window for Preview." and I don't feel like bothering to do this.
    2. Use Grab to take a screenshot, copy into Preview, crop as necessary and save to desired format.
    Which is easier depends on whether you feel like having to do precision cropping or not. Totally agree with above commenters - whither PICT, Apple?

    Is there a short cut key to move CTI one frame at a time? I am an After Effects guy and very much used to move one frame at time using the shortcut keys. New to Animate CC... I haven't been able to figure out that feature in Animate CC. Any help for this newbie? Thank u. Cheers

    That's how Photoshop's video editor works.  You can adjust only one layer/frame at a time.

  • Batch export off by one frame

    I'm trying to export several clips from a bin in Premiere CC 2014 (rendering R3D to DPX).  I highlight them all, add to the queue.  Then in Media Encoder, I select each one and change the source range to "Clip In/Out".  Unfortunately, this creates renders offset by one frame.  So it's missing one frame at the head, and has an extra frame at the tail.

    Hi, I just tested this and can't reproduce the problem. I tried selecting lip in/out in both premiere cc (2014, 8.0.0 169 build) and ame and both were frame accurate. Can you double check your frame rate settings please? Also what OS are you running and version of premiere?

  • Why is there a big red X on one frame of my FCPX export?

    I exported this twice and both times on ONE frame there is a giant red X over the frame. This wasn't there in FCPX, just in the export. Why?  How do we fix this?

    but an X like that is usually the result of applying an effect, that has not been fully licensed, to the clip, so the effect applies a watermark X.

  • Sequence w 23.976 fps exporting as h.264 QT with 22.69fps

    I exported an h.264 QuickTime from Premiere Pro CC (Mac).  The project/sequence was set to 23.976 fps.  The export settings for the QuickTime was also set to 23.976 fps. However, the QuickTime that was created had a frame rate of 22.69fps.  I have never had an issue like this before. 
    I had Premiere add the QuickTime to the project on export.  That QuickTime file displayed 23.976 fps in the Premiere Pro Project Panel.  However, the same QuickTime is showing as 22.69fps on the QuickTime inspector in QuickTime, as well as a third party application. 
    The odd thing is, after several attempts with the above set up, sometimes the exported QuickTime has the correct frame rate of 23.976 fps and sometimes the exported QuickTime has a frame rate of 22.69fps (incorrect), so it is not consistent.
    I have reported this issue to Adobe. The Adobe tech, via a screen sharing session, also noticed this inconsistency first-hand and agreed there was an issue of some kind.
    Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on?

  • Final Cut Pro X Image Sequence Export missing frames per second option?

    I am using the trial version of Final Cut Pro X.  I can export an image sequence but it will only allow me to do so at 30 frames per second -every single frame! 
    So a 10 min movie takes half an hour to export 20,000+ frames that no one on earth has time to look thru.
    In my old Final Cut Express I was able to choose 1 or 2 frames per second, which was just right.
    What am I missing?
    Do I need to buy Quicktime Pro or Compressor to allow me to export image sequences without exporting every frame?
    Why would Apple even have an image sequence export if it only allows you to export every frame, or it that only in the trial version?

    I found a free option for you, if you don't already have Compressor 4.
    In FCPX create your movie. Then SHARE as a Master File.
    Get MPEG Streamclip, which is a free app available here.

    Drag your Master File into MPEG Streamclip.
    In MPEG Streamclip, select FILE/EXPORT TO OTHER FORMATS.
    In FORMAT: choose IMAGE SEQUENCE
    In OPTIONS, choose your frame rate.

  • Quicktime export question

    hey guys
    i know that quicktime export is the best for dvd because it is the same source coming out as it was going in.
    my one video i exported was roughly 17 minutes long...i exported it and it came to about 300mb
    i then exported a video that was only 7 minutes long and it came to 1.5gb!
    both videos has the same amount of stuff going on it it...possibly the 17 minute one had even more! so why would the shorter lengthed video be such a huge file size?
    i am planning on making a dvd with about 25 short lengthed films on it. most blank dvds hold 4.7 gbs so that one video being 1.5gb is kinda hurtin
    why would it export that much larger? is there anything i can do to help that?

    i rendered everything and exported again, althought unfortunately it still came out to be 1.5 gb!
    i can't figure out what it would be...i tried something after...i imported the 1.5gb video into a new project and exported that...it came out to 80 mb which was good, but then when i deleted the other file, that 80mb video file all of a sudden became currupt! i dont know how it did because it was a totally separate exported file? :/
    well i just ran out of space on my mac book pro so i was trying to find stuff to delete to save some space to continue.
    i saw that itunes copies all of the songs from lime wire, so i deleted all of the lime wire copies, which was about 3 or 4 gigs.
    unfortunatly when i opened my projects back up a ton of the music was offline! i suppose when i imported alot of music i chose the limewire copy instead which is unfortunate
    i was freaking out when i saw this! all of these files were offline...is there any way to reconnect them with the exact file copy, thats in itunes?
    even though alot of these files were offline, i still heard them on the timeline which was releaving...
    im still trying to export this 7 minute long video to hopefully be less than 300mb. would there be any more of a problem now that some of the audio is offline?
    all i need is a quicktime dvd quality export of it, if i get that, i suppose it doesnt even matter if i keep the project or rough stuff
