23.98 vs. 24p audio

hello,
i have been having a lot of trouble matching my audio exports.
i am working with a 23.98 timeline with 24pa footage shot from the DVX100.
my sound engineer is working with a 24p timeline, so i have exported video and audio for him to work with under 24p video and audio.
the aiff exports, however, will not match my 24p video. even if i export the aiff in the 24 timeline, it wont synch with the 24p video.
the video is being exported at DV 48k-24 and audio is 48k stereo.
can anyone help me?
thanks,
steve

Yes... we are running into a variation of this as well. Very frustrating... it didn't happen to us before Quicktime 7. We are also using a mixed Windows/Mac environment, and it seems that we are unable to make a true 23.976 (or even a 23.98) fps movie with Quicktime no matter what. They seem to always come from a Windows machine with the FPS set to 23.99. This makes our conversions balk as well as our Final Cut system. What we are doing is taking a series of special effects digital dailies compressed in H.264 (or Sorenson), sent via FTP, and then converting them to DV for editing in Final Cut (4.5). When doing the conversion, we now run into any number of problems, including a doubling of frame 19 so that frame 19 and 20 are identical, and this continues through the shot. We also have Final Cut kicking back shot to us that don't have the new "Aperture display" feature not set to "classic"... a neat feature, but not at the cost of breaking a well-honed workflow.

  • Importing 24p audio falls out of synch

    Hello,
I was just capturing two tapes of a musc video, using a panasonic GS500 to import, shot in 24p on a DVX100, and captured on the standard DV NTSC 48 kHz preset. When I watched my clips afterwards, I found that the audio falls out of synch in the longer clips. I don't understand why this has happened, because I thought the 24p was still recorded on the tape as DV NTSC but with a 3:2 pulldown effect on it. My question is how can I fix this importing problem so it doesn't fall out of synch again when I re-import?
    Thank You,
    Kyle

This can happen with long captures. Better Camera/deck seems to be key here.
For now, you could select the clips that drift and do a 'File'/Export as AIFF...48khz/16bit. Then re-link/replace the new audio with the original video files.
Recapturing in shorter clip length may avoid funky Aud Rates. Either way, you'll likely need to create new multi-clips and edit with those.
Within current multi-clip sequences, you can control-shift/drag left or right on an angle in the viewer to bring the sync back in line. This should only affect the angle/clip following a cut, and not the sync prior to a cut.
If you've already made many cuts througout the timeline, you could use the 'slip' tool on out of sync clips after you've collapsed the multiclip.
    Hope that helps,
    Kevan

  • 25p to 24p audio?

I have been trying for a week using soundtrack pro to conform the sound of a 25p 1.5 hr movie to 24p.
Used cinema tools to get the video 24p (23.98 on the FCP timeline) but can not seem to get the audio to sync up properly.
I tried process>time stretch and set it to the exact hh:mm:ss:ff that is the end of the movie in the 24p FCP timeline but that doesn't seem to work. (in soundtrack)
Anyone have a way to do this in FCP? in Soundtrack? In Logic lite? any other app?
your advice will be much appreciated.. supposed to be getting this thing out on DVD to many many people but can't get the audio fixed
    thx

Forgive my ignorance on the topic and I wish you success. You might find something helpful here:

Why do you need to conform anything? Depending on your release needs, the audio can remain a separate file. The length of your sound track won't change regardless of the frame rate; 90 minutes of 25fps is the same amount of time as 90 minutes at 24fps.
Again, my apologies for not knowing anything at all useful about your problem. Last time I shot double system or had to convert from 23.97 crystal to 29.97 NTSC was maybe 20 years ago.
Best of luck, please come back and close the post if you get it figured out.

  • 30P to 24P audio problem

    Hi all,
quick question that I cannot ind an answer to: I shot at 30, and I want to slow it down to 24 for a slight slow mo look, I right click the file in PP, interpret footage-23.98 then try playing it in the source monitor, it looks and sounds great (albeit audio that sounds like Barry White) Once I drag it into the Sequence which is at 23.976, the video looks the same, but the audio is early by several seconds (still Barry Whitish, but very off)
Any ideas?  I need the slow audio synced in the final output so I can re-do the vocals and match to the slowed down mouth movements.
I'm on a Mac 2008 8 core, Snow Leopard, 12 GB RAM, etc.
    Thanks!

Don't use Interpret Footage.  Right click the clip and change it's Speed/Duration.

  • 24P Audio Problem on burned Disc

I have an asset that was shot and compressed at 23.98. When I bring it in to Studio Pro 4 it plays fine ... audio is synced and all is good. (Although, the inspector says it is a 29.97 file ... I assume this isn't an issue though ... I can confirm that it is compressed at the correct fps.)
Anyway, once I burn the disc the audio seams a hair out of sync with the piece when played on external DVD players ... confirmed on multiple DVD decks. Maddening! Lips don't quite match. What in the heck am I doing wrong?!?!
    Thoughts anyone?

Is the audio lagging or in advance right off the bat, and remaining at the same rate of missmatch throughout, or is it slowly going out of sync?
Is the audio AIFF or AC3?
If AIFF, this may be the problem even though the format is in the DVD spec.
Are you viewing on a consumer large screen (42" or larger) LCD or Plasma?
Some displays without lip sync adjustability built-in will pass the audio milliseconds before the video (always before, not after).
Improper lip sync drives me crazy watching network TV.
( and a few commercial DVDs as well)
    The standard is too loose.
I use a Felston DD540 to correct the audio on some channels.

  • Audio sync problems. Need some advice!

I have a project with 25p files from a D7 camera. The external recorded audio is synced with PluralEyes, with the audio/videosettings in FCP set to 24p. So I have 25p video and 24p audio. The audio is drifting and I have green lines on the audio showing that there is a problem.
Is there an easy way to fix this? Can I convert the audiofiles in some way, and reconnect in the timeline?

Have you tried using cinematools to conform the 25p material to 24p. Be sure and duplicate your files before testing.

  • Encoding for BluRay Help Please

    Hello,
I'm encoding BluRay for the first time using Media Encoder CS4.
First, some details about my footage.
Shot with a Panasonic HVX-170 set at: 1080i/24PA.
    The footage properties are: 1280 x 1080, Pixel Depth 32, Frame Rate 29.97 (24P),
Audio 16/48K, Average Data Rate: 1.2 Mb, Pixel Aspect Ratio is 1.5
There are a number of settings to choose from. Some obviously aren't correct but I'm not sure
    about the others. I don't see one for 1280 x 1080.
So out of all these settings, which is the one I need to Encode my footage for the best results?

Also, can anyone explain what H.264 BluRay is used for?
    Thanks very much in advance.
    Mark Dalzell

    Jim,
First off, thanks for taking time to help out. I'm encoding now.
I have a question if you wouldn't mind. I'm a little confused. Well OK, a lot...
Is there any specific reason as to why I wouldn't use the setting(s) either
HDTV 1080i 29.97 High Quality or HDTV 1080p 24 High Quality?
The reason I ask is because it was shot at 1080i/24PA and
    the frame rate is 29.97.
Again, my thanks to you for helping me out.
    Best.

  • Dv tape?

I know this is a stupid question, but if someone gave you a dvtape, with no other information available from the person who shot the video. How can you tell what format it was shot with, such as 30fps, 24p, audio settings etc....

Capture some, scroll over in the browser and see what the properties are.
BUT... since all bizarro formats captured to dv ar 29.97 with pull down possibly added, toy'll have to look deeper for some of it.
First stop would be asking the camera person what they shot.

  • Audio drop-out in FCPX with 1920x1080 & 2048x1240p @ 24p (codec Apple ProRes 4444 (Linear PCM))24p

    Hi all...
    I'm new to this forum.
Is there an audio issue (drop-outs) with FCPX (ver 10.1.2) for 1920x1080 24p, 1080p HD & 2048x1240 24p (2k) - note: films in FCPX are in codec Apple ProRes 4444, Linear PCM?
Very recently I've been working on a show reel and I have imported a file (short film) to snip out a section to add to the show reel.
I set the project to the film's settings i.e.. "set based on first video clip"...(1920x1080 24p, 1080p HD).  When I play the film in FCPX the audio "hic-cups"..."dips to silence"..."drops-out" briefly (up to 0.5 secs in duration) and very frequently all the way through (approx 15 mins long film)...note: audio set is at stereo 48kHz. The audio monitors on the right hand side also show the dip taking place (if it's a long enough drop-out).
I also have a version of the film in 2048x1240 24p at 2k, again Stereo 48kHz...and this does the same audio "drop-out" all the way through.  I'm unsure what other formats will create this problem i.e. higher or lower aspect ratios than those above.
Is this a software and/or OS issue?  Or a hardware issue?  Or both!?
    About This iMac details:
    iMac 27 inch: OS X ver 10.9.4
Processor: 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB
    Fusion Drive 3.12 TB
Final Cut Pro X was bought & installed with this iMac back in Feb 2014
    FCPX version: 10.1.2
Note also:  I used Compressor (ver 4.1.2) to convert the files (movies) above to Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Linear PCM and the issue disappeared - the audio and visuals played with no problems.  All films play with no issue when opened in QT player.  They are also fine when exporting from FCPX.  The issue only occurs (as far as I can tell) within FCPX when editing or playing the audio there.
    Has anyone encountered this problem?
    Kind Regards,
    Hakan

    Hi Luis,
    Thank you for that.
Seems like you have a point about the "hardware" issue.  I'm unsure (new to it all) at what data rate my (er...wonderful) fusion drive provides FCPX for smooth playback - or where I can find that info on the iMac.  Playing back movies in the 422 HQ codec seems to have no issues (when I converted the movie from 4444 HQ).
But playing the full 4444 HQ, the picture is smooth, but the audio has these drop-outs - even with "best performance" option ticked. Interesting that the audio suffers, not the picture in FCPX - so not sure what's going on there. I also read - perhaps - that to play a smooth ProRes 4444 HQ movie in FCPX the data rate should be min of 500 Mbs (based upon About Apple ProRes) for HD movies and up (i.e. 2k).  ProRes 422 HQ needs a data rate of 220 Mbs - so that is my upper-limit to smooth video&audio playback with the current system I have, I guess.
Does anyone recommend a fast USB3 or Thunderbolt drive (500Mbs+) where I am able to run 4444HQ movies with no issues to picture or sound (away from the fusion drive)?

    H.

  • Settings for audio HDV 24p 16:9

    Hi,
I have some very serious audio issues. Someone told me, maybe it happened because of the way I captured the audio (I don't know) into FCP. Maybe...
The footage was shot with an HV20 in HDV 24p 16:9. The sound clip in Format states:
    Aud rate 48.0 KHz
    Aud format 16-bit integer
Data rate 3.6 MB / sec
    Should it be that way????

Digital audio for video is 48 kHz, 16 Bit.
There are other settings, but let's not complicate the issue -this setting is correct for you.
So, what are your audio issues and how did you capture?
Did you transcode the HDV to Apple Intermediate or ProRes codec?
What is your Easy Setup and Timeline Sequence Settings?

  • Trouble Syncing P2 24p footage with 29.97 audio

    Hi All,
I'm having problems syncing Panasonic P2 format footage shot at 24p from an HPX-500, and externally recorded sound.  I'm using PPro CS5.5 on Win7.  I believe this is because the P2 format is actually 29.97fps with some pull-down (Remove Pull-Down setting checked for the clips) and the audio was recorded with a timecode of 23.976.
So when I use the Synchronize feature it gets the clips close, but the audio lags just so slightly, less than a frame.  I can switch to audio time units and manually sync, but I have a completed short film with a ton of clips that I have to do this for and I think it would take the next ten years to manually sync ;-)
If there are any solutions to this, I would be greatful for any suggestions on how to handle this.  The specs of the video and audio clips are below.
    Type: P2 Movie
    File Size: 1.5 GB
    Image Size: 1280 x 1080

Already given.  While camera makes have no problem creating hardware that records audio at a consistent rate, audio device makers either can't or won't do the same.
Hey Jim, sorry - I should have clarified that statement a bit more.  The slight differences can be understood by your comment for sure, unfortunately .  But the timecode should not be mismatched at all - there seems to be a bad calculation in PPro somewhere.  Other applications can read and match the timecodes without any problems (see below).
I found some further info - I had my friend import the footage and audio at his studio with FCP and Avid and they both matched perfectly (he's also going to try Smoke).  I also downloaded the trial of Avid Media Composer 6 and the clips matched up perfectly also.
As a test, on my system, I batch "converted" all my audio files using Audition - just saving them with all the same parameters as the originals.  Then I imported back into Premiere and guess what?  They matched much, much more closely.  Still faster by 9951 samples after 00:01:47:00 - so I don't know how noticable 1/48th of a second will be, and I suppose I can find some nice edit points to adjust at.  But also back to your suggestion on adjusting the speed of the audio, I may be able minimize that too.
    Thanks for your help.

  • 24P Advanced - Audio/Video Synch Problem on Capture

I shot some footage in 24P advanced. When I capture into FCP4 (settings are 23.98 timecode, 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal), the video and audio become out of synch (in the canvass -- I haven't bothered dragging anything to the timeline yet).
I shot with a Canon XL2 and am importing with a Canon GL2. I usually shoot with a Panasonic AG-DVX100 (and import with a Panasonic) and never had this problem before. I'm in a bit of a time crunch, so I'm starting to get very nervous.
I used "capture now," not log & capture.
Any ideas? Thank you very much.

Was the camera set at 24p 2:3:3:2, or just 24p 2:3. If it was set to 2:3, your capture settings with easy setup will simply be, DV-NTSC. If it was set to 2:3:3:2 your settings for footage from an XL2 should be Easy Setup - DV-NTSC (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal, and you capture setting will be changed to DV NTSC 48 kHz Avanced 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal. This captures at 29.97 (DV NTSC) and puts your footage into a 24p timeline.
I'm suspecting that your camera wasn't set to 2:3:3:2 because that is not a default setting. Which is fine for playback on a TV, but not optimal for playback to film.

  • Audio issues from FCP to Compression to DVDSP regarding 24p

This has probably been asked before. I exported my 2 hour Anamorphic 24p movie into Quicktime self contain with Audio. Once I run through compressor (.m2v and .ac3) And import the files into DVDSP, on the track it progressively goes out of sync. Its good in the beginning and then it gradually goes out of synce. Please Help.

if your audio is in sync with the video only for the first second or so, and then gets more off as time goes by, it may be that your video is at 24fps and your audio is at 29.97 or 30. also, did you check the original move your exported (the one that went to compressor) to see if the audio was synced there?

  • Audio out of sync - [24p & 44.1khz mp3]

I have a very strange problem of audio going at a slower rate than the video.
All the video was captured at on a Panasonic in 24p mode.
All the audio was recorded on a Marantz recorder with a flash drive (mp3).
Actors are sitting during the takes with a shotgun microphone relatively stationary a few feet away.
The first few takes of video and audio match perfectly.
On the other takes the audio progressively gets slower as the takes going on.
The audio is significantly out of sync by the time the takes are over.
Each take is about 10 minutes long.
The audio starts to slow at about one minute into the take.
The audio does NOT sound slow, it is just lagging out of sync.
    What the heck is this?
    Help anyone, thanks,
    Jason

NEXT time, record separate audio with a device that can generate timecode. Timecode is the clock that keeps video at an exact frame rate. Mp3 does not have a corresponding clock.
Since the audio is slower, just find a silent spot and pull out the necessary frames to pull it up until it slips again. rinse and repeat.
Used to have to do this with film every now and again, with wild sound.

  • 25P to 24P conform audio?

I have been trying for almost a week now to get this done for a 85min movie. I am bringing in the .aif from the 25P movie (exported as aif from FCP). Then once it loads up I select process and time stretch. then i set the hh:mm:ss:ff to be exactly how long the movie is in the 24P timeline in FCP (actually a 23.98 timeline). I also set the STP prefs to be 23.98.
I have tried now so many times and can't get the sound to sync up.
I read something about slowing down 4%. Maybe, I can try that. but how?
or maybe i should be using frames?
I read that STP automatically adjusts the pitch too. Does anyone know about doing this as well?
    thanks in advance. totally confused.
