23" Cinema Display: Can't disable MacBook display to use only the cinema?

Hi,
I just bought a 23" cinema display with the intention of using it exclusively while I use a wireless keyboard and just keep my MacBook closed. I notice that when I set the display preferences to "mirror," the quality of the cinema display reduces greatly, since it's only able to be set at the maximum display resolution allowed for the MacBook when mirroring. This seems to defeat the purpose of having the cinema display. So, I guess I have several questions:
1. Can I close the MacBook without it going to sleep?
2. Can I make the cinema display the primary display (with application menus, etc.)?
3. Can I disable the MaBook display and use only the cinema display?
Thanks,
Stew

1. Can I close the MacBook without it going to sleep?
No, but if the power adapter is connected, you can wake it with the external keyboard or mouse (make sure wake-up is enabled in the Bluetooth system preference), and it will continue to run with the lid closed.
2. Can I make the cinema display the primary display (with application menus, etc.)?
Yes. In the "Arrangement" pane of "Displays" system preference, turn off mirroring and drag the picture of the menu bar to the picture f the external display.
3. Can I disable the MaBook display and use only the cinema display?
Yes. Close the lid.

What model and year is your MacBook?  Some older MacBooks don't support Audio out via miniport/HDMI (the display miniport is video only).

  • Can't use only the external monitor, leaving macbook open on Lion

    HW
    macbook pro 15-inch, Early 2011
external samsung monitor, attached using HDMI to Thunderbolth adaptor
    Previous Situation
With Snow Leopard I was able to keep the macbook screen open but turned off and use only the external monitor. This way I was able to use the front camera to make conference having everything only in the external monitor.
    Current Situation
With Lion as soon as I open the macbook monitor the image splits between the two monitors and I'm not able to set the extenal one as only one.

Support today quoted Apple's engineers as saying it is "expected behaviour" under Lion for the MBP's internal display to reactivate upon opening the lid, even if you want to use only your external display. A new version of the clamshell mode-related knowledgebase article (replacing HT3131) is due shortly confirming this.
    This is despite:
    - the obvious temperature-related benefits that were achievable (under Snow Leopard) by opening your MBP lid whilst continuing to output solely to, say, a 27" cinema display
    - potential wifi connectivity benefits of having the lid open
    - the waste of energy and inefficient use of graphics processing power in needlessly running two active screens (ie if running your MBP in clamshell mode would otherwise make it too hot and/or noisy or you need it open for wifi)
    - the negative longer-term impact on the battery and other components from running the MBP any hotter than it needs to be.
To have any hope of getting the previous behaviour back, we need to lobby Apple to change how Lion handles clamshell mode. Options available to them include changing Lion's expected behaviour or adding a user-selectable option within System Preferences.
If you haven't already submitted feedback, please do so below. Now the situation has been clarified as intentional, user feedback has become all the more important.

  • How can I disable making live shape rectangle in the first place but normal one instead in Illustrator CC?

How can I disable making live shape rectangle in the first place but normal one instead in Illustrator CC? When I create rectangle I can't transform it by dragging and it's only the problem with rectangle, not with circle, star etc. I try show/hide edges/bounding box reset preferences and reinstall whole illustrator CC and it's the same. I can only make this right by expand this rectangle, which is shape as is turn out to rectangle by clicking object>shape>expand rectangle. But this is so frustrating. Help!:) oh, and I use OSX. My friend has the same specs and it's works. I mean she can use live shape corner transformations and changing size by draging:(

I’ve created my own plugin (available for free for personal and commercial use) which imitates behavior of the ‘old’ Rectangle Tool. It doesn’t replace the Live Rectangle – it works completely independent!
My Plain Rectangle Tool correctly snaps to grids/objects/points and correctly aligns to grid/points on resize. Of course it supports the SHIFT and ALT/OPTION keys, Snap to Grid and Smart Guides options. In other words it works almost 100% the same as the Rectangle Tool we know from CC (17.1), CS6 and earlier.
The installation package (zxp) adds ‘Plain Rectangle Tool’ icon into the Ai panel (of curse you can assign your custom keyboard shortcut to it as well)
Note: The Plain Rectangle can be easily converted into the Live one using Object > Shape > Convert to Rectangle
Grab your copy at http://63mutants.com/subc/products/PlainRectangleTool_m01/PlainRectangleTool_m01.php Feel free to share with your friends. It’s completely free.
I’ve also created a separate discussion https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1587587 for the Plain Rectangle Tool. If you have any comments or request please post it there. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

  • I have an Apple Powerbook G4, and my monitor doesn't function. I have an external display Monitor, however it's stuck in extended screen mode. How do I get it to mirror or duplicate the display without use of the on-board?

As i had said, I have an Apple Powerbook G4, and my monitor doesn't function. I have an external display Monitor, however it's stuck in extended screen mode. How do I get it to mirror or duplicate the display without use of the on-board? Is there a Fn key combo i'm missing or is the issue more serious then i realize? any and all help and hints would be greatly apprichiated, thanks in advance.
    -Powerbook User

The PowerBooks have an F-key that toggles mirrored and extended mode. My PB is loaned out right now but I think it was f7. The keycap has an icon on two overlapping rectangles, as I recall.
EDIT: Yes! Found a pdf of the PB manual it shows F7 is the toggle:

  • How can i order more copies of a iPhoto book using only the order number

how can i order more copies of an  iPhoto book I made
by  using only the order number
as I deleted by mistake a copy of it on my iphoto

I know the horse is out of the barn but this tutorial might be of help for future books: iP12 - Archiving an iPhoto 9 (11) Book for Editing and/or Ordering at a Later Date.
If you're starting over from scratch with a book I suggest you create a new library just for that book. Put the photos you want in the book in an album in your current library and use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy that album into the book library.
This will keep the book library small for easy saving to CD or DVD or to an EHD.  If you delete photos from your full library it won't affect the book library.

My elderly mother has EXTREMELY limited vision and is a technophobe. I am considering an iPhone with Siri.  Can I turn off everything else so she can use only the phone app and voice dialing or Siri and not accidentally open any other app and screw something up.

I'm asking, in all seriousness, why do you think your mother needs an iPhone? Honestly, if your mother is, as you described her, a technophobe, I would recommend against getting an iPhone or any other smartphone. I've spent a fair bit of time teaching older folks to use smartphones. If they are interested in learning, it's fine. If they have the phone because their kids or grandkids thought it was a good idea but they are afraid of the phone or not interested in its features, it doesn't go well at all.
Many basic phones have voice dialing. Obviously, it doesn't do all the things Siri does but it may be much less intimidating for your mom. Also, basic phones have hardware keys. Even someone with limited vision can learn the keyboard on such a phone. From the sound of your first post, all she will be doing is making phone calls.
    Best of luck.

  • How can I know which file is using by the self-service workflow?

    Dear all:
In my directory, there are two HRSSA.wft and How can I know which source is using by the workflow of the self-service ?
    my environment is oracle 11.5.9 | self-service 4.1 | workflow builder 2.6
    Thanks
    regards
    Terry

One way would be to download the HRSSA workflow to a wft file (using the WFLOAD utility - see MOS Doc 578248.1), then comparing this downloaded wft file with the two files you have (using a utility such as diff in Unix). The comparison that reports no differences will identify the wft that was uploaded into the database.

  • I have just set up Itunes match on my new iMac. It is saying I can access all my 9000 songs but only the playlist tab is live. Am I missing something?

    Hi
I have just set up itunes match on my new imac. It is saying I can access all my 9000 songs but only the playlist tab is live - I can't access albums or songs. Am I missing something?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I do not understand your problem. iTunes Match does not change the way iTunes looks. When match process is complete, the match screen tells you how much music you have in the cloud.
Across the top of screen you have options to select songs, albums, artist, composers etc.
Suggest that from main menu, select view>show sidebar.

  • Can a dead MacBook Pro be used as a target disk?

I have a Santa Rosa MacBook Pro, 15 inch display, with 250 GB and nVidia GeForce 8800 GT. A few weeks ago I left it to sleep, and the battery eventually drained (the blinking ceased). Now, if I plug in the charger, the light is always green (so are the little LED lights near the battery panel). If I hit the power on button, it doesn't respond.
I've resetted the PRM, and taken the battery out for 10 minutes and so on but it hasn't helped.
Would this call for a change in battery? I described it to a member of the Apple team at the Apple store (since I didn't have my laptop at the time we went to the mall) and he said it didn't sound good, but that's all he said.
It has once been in repair for a faulty logic board which Apple covered under an extension program, but that was a year and a half ago. Besides that it was working like a dream until this happened.
I have no warranty and I'm especially worried about the data I might lose because the external HD that Time Machine used died a few days ago.
I was thinking of using the MacBook Pro as a Target Disk, and connect it to my working Apple MacBook. But won't the MacBook Pro have to be switched on?
Please help! I would like any suggestions, detailed walkthroughs so I can atleast save my data.
    Thanks!

...If I hit the power on button, it doesn't respond...
Yes, the computer must be able to at least turn on in order to work in Target Disk Mode. Your only option would appear to be to remove the drive from the Macbook, then put it into an external case so you could use it as your would any other external drive.
...the external HD that Time Machine used died a few days ago....
Oh dear, Murphy seems to have taken a large interest in you. While it won't help you now, for the future, what I always recommend to my clients is to have "at least 3 copies". Basically, this is the original, one "normal" backup and another backup that's stored offsite in a firesafe. In addition to dead hard drive like you had, offsite is insurance against theft or damage to building and contents. And firesafe for obvious reasons, but that is at your discretion depending on the importance of the data. But even if you don't go offsite, at least manually make another copy of your documents, iTunes Library, iPhoto Library, etc. on to another hard drive, flash drive, CD, DVD, etc.

  • Some videos are not showing in Apple TV playlist after upgrade to 6.0.  Can play on Macbook itunes and using airplay to Apple TV.  Anybody else have this issue?

Some videos are not showing in my Apple TV playlists after upgrade to 6.0.  They were there prior to upgrade and I can play on Macbook itunes and also using using airplay to Apple TV.  Anybody else have this issue?

Ok, so I'll try again.  Thank you for the idea of looking in Home Videos, which is where all my "lost" videos are listed.
Is there a way to get them to display under their appropriate genre in the Movie section, which is where they all were listed prior to the os6 update?  It does me no good to have hundreds of movies categorized in iTunes via a genre only to have them appear in Home Videos on ATV.  These are not "home movies." They are legit mp4 movies that worked great under v5.
