23" cinema Display flickers and goes to black

Hey all,
I am running two 23" cinema displays and one of them is flickering and going to black. Here is a video of it.
http://larskoerkemeier.com/MVI_0972.MOV
The curved bands arent there thats just from the filming but what happens is the entire image shifts up very quickly and what you see flash on the bottom is actually the top. It repeats this a couple times and then turns off and then it repeats and after a couple times the display just stays off.
System:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Memory: 6 GB
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
Thanks,
-Lars

Hi-
Try switching the power adapters to see if the problem moves to the other display.
Of course, reconnecting/double checking all connections is a good idea.
Other than that, any references in Console/Logs regarding graphics driver errors?

  • 24" Cinema Display flickering and eventually going dark

I am having a repeat of a problem with my Apple 24" Cinema Display. The symptoms are the display will go black and come back on (flicker) and sometimes it takes a few seconds for it to come back. All USB devices connected to the Cinema Display become disconnected from my MacBook Pro when this happens.
Last time this happened it started slowly and as time passed it happened more frequently. When I brought it into the store they were able to reproduce the problem immediately. They replaced the logic board in the monitor.
I contacted support again. The display is still under warrantee. They scheduled an appointment for me to bring the display in. I am seeing the same behavior where the frequency of this problem increases as time passes.
I am concerned they will be unable to quickly reproduce the problem again and not fix it, or fix it and the problem will come back again in a few months. I am afraid that I will still be having this problem after the warrantee expires.
I've purchased many displays over the years (including Apple) and this is the first time I have ever had a problem. I think I may have had a lemon.
I originally posted in these now archived threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12175983#12175983

Just a quick update. I brought the display into my local Apple store. After they reviewed the records from the previous repair and my description of the problem they believe it could be a power supply problem inside the monitor. The power supply may have caused the logic board to go bad. Replacing the logic board last time fixed the problem but the bad power supply ended up causing the problem to return.
I let them know that I was concerned that this is a reoccurring problem and my warrantee expires in July. I don't want to see this problem come back after the warrantee expires.
I'm not sure what they will do if that happens. I hope this problem gets fixed this time around.

  • IMac 27' Mid 2011 display flickering and going dark

Having bought an iMac 27' in may 2012 I was confronted with a flickering of the screen and the display eventually going dark for a certain amount of time.
Unfortunately the first level support wasn't helpful and the second level support rather rude.
Have taken the iMac to the seller I was told they would have to change the display for € 700,-. Apple would refuse to extend the one year warranty though other people have encountered the same problems obviously after checking in different support forums.
So did anyone find a cheaper solution then just to exchange the whole display? Having to spend half the prize of a new iMac can't be the answer.

Yes, the light comes back after a few minutes or half an hour.
Will try take a screenshot when the display is off again as soon as I get the iMac back from the workshop.
I have decided not to spend so much money on the replacement of the display for the moment. If the light goes off more often I will buy another display (probably a non-apple-product with a better warranty) and connect it to the iMac.
As much as I love the concept of the apple products and the idea of an All-In-One computer (it's my 7th apple in 25 years), I really disliked how they treated me as a customer with a valid complain.
If it just this little cable why would Apple replace the whole display? I'll check if I can fix it myself then.

  • Why is my 2007 HP V17 monitor screen flickering and going black?

I have an old  2007 HP V17 monitor attached with a VGA cable to an early 2008 Macbook running on OS 10.6.8 software  via a  DVI- mini connector (this is also my desktop computer).
About 6 months ago, the HP display started going white and sometimes gray for a few seconds before the image would return, and a couple of times I had to unplug it and restart the Macbook before it came back.  I followed Apple's instructions for testing whether the problem was in the computer  (= resetting the system by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC), but the computer tested okay.  I then purchased a new VGA cable and DVI-mini connector, but the problem persisted.
Today the HP screen suddenly went black (first time going black) and stayed black.   The power button stayed lit and if I pressed the Volume or Auto buttons, the "Volume" etc. message boxes did appear, so the device's backlight is apparently working and not burnt out (unless the backlight has nothing to do with the message boxes showing up, which for all I know may be the case).  However, the Desktop showed up only on the Macbook.
I checked all the connections, removed the DVI connector and plugged it back into the Macbook several times, but the HP screen stayed black, so I removed the DVI connector in order to type this message on the Macbook.  Then, as I was writing this, I decided to plug it back into the Macbook one more time--and sure enough, the display is back!
I love this monitor, which is the perfect size and ergonomic height for my setup, so I'd hate to have to replace it.  Can anyone tell me
Given the information above, what's the probable reason for the flickering and going to black?  If it's the computer, what could it be?  Can I solve this problem myself? (See above; I couldn't find any other ways to test the computer in the Apple articles database.)
If not, could a monitor this old  be repaired?
If so, how much would repairing it cost, since buying a new monitor that I probably wouldn't like as much would cost upwards of $300?
Thanks so much for any advice out there!

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that your HP V17 Monitor has gone black and is not displaying anything. I am providing you with some steps for you to try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
If the issue persists after this you can try the monitor on another computer to see if it continues. If it does it appears to be a physical issue and I think it would be best if you contact HP Technical Support for repair options.

  • Imac 21.5 (ver 10.6.8) Display flickers and it goes blank

Display flickers and its brightness automatically increases and decreases intermittently. After some time the Display goes blank and it doesn't appear even after pressing the power button or restarting the PC. At times it does appear after pressing the power button frequently or if the PC is left ON for some time. I am using software ver 10.6.8. Want to whether this problem will be resolved after upgrading it to Mavericks. But I am worried that during the downloading if the display goes off and if I have to restart the PC then I will have to start the downloading from the beginning. Please suggest.

  • 27'' LED Cinema Display flickers when powering MBP and dimmed down

The 27'' LED Cinema Display flickers (backlight flickers) in the following situation:
    * The display powers an MacBook Pro (e.g. later 2010).
    * The MacBook Pro is fully charged (i.e. power is not used for charging).
    * The MacBook Pro performs some GPU intense task (moving the mouse over the dock with magnification enabled).
    * The brightness of the display is dimmed down to one of the lower settings (one or two "bars").
The problem disappears if the MBP is powered by an independent charger.
We reproduced the problem with two different MBPs (13'' and 15'') and two different displays.

Same problem here! I bought two brand new 27 inch Cinema Displays, one for work and one for my home office. Both showed the problem. I returned both, go replacement displays and both show the same problem. I am using them with a 13 inch MacBook Air late 2010. I use them with the MacBook's display lid closed and powered by the Cinema Display. The problem only occurs when the display brightness is at 1 to 5 bars. From 6 bars on everything is fine. I also noticed that the flickering is stronger when I USE the computer, i.e. dragging around windows, typing, etc. When I just look at the screen, the flickering occurs more sporadically. The flickering looks like a short switching off of the display light (a few milliseconds).
I just tried the hint suggested in this thread and indeed, when I open the lid and have the MacBook running on batteries (not powered by the Cinema Display), the flickering is gone! So it really seems to be dependent on that.
Please fix it, Apple! This is not acceptable for a premium-quality display! We have already done a good job narrowing down the conditions under which the problem occurs. You should easily be able to reproduce the issue like this:
    - use a MacBook (e.g. new MacBook Air) and turn it on
    - plug in all three cables provided by the 27" Cinema Display (power, DisplayPort, USB)
    - close the lid of the MacBook and re-awake it with an external keyboard so the Cinema Display will be the only display in use
    - wait a few hours for the Cinema Display to become warm (not sure if this is a necessary condition but it could be)
    - then, use the computer under low-light conditions and ensure the brightness is at 5 bars or less
--> You will see the problem.
By the way, the recent Cinema Display firmware update (to address the audio issue) did NOT solve this problem.

  • Screen flickers and goes black on boot up.

Have an older white MacBook that when I boot up, screen flickers and goes black, MacBook does power on.
    Any suggestions?

I am seing a similar issue with a 13" White MacBook.
Powers on ... chimes ... then screen goes blank as if the machine has gone to sleep. Hitting the Return key or the power button wakes it again, but only for two seconds ... and repeat!
    Any help gratefully received!

  • 27" Cinema display flickers when woken from sleep

I've noticed that my 27" Apple Cinema display flickers briefly when woken from sleep.
I have had the display for 8 months, and haven't noticed this before.
It flickers (or flashes), just once when the display wakes when the computer is woken from sleep. It only affects the bottom third of the display.
Once it has properly woken, and flickered once, it then works o.k.
    Has anyone else had this?
    Thanks.
    Bob.

Yeah - I'm trying to verify that 100% right now. I know that I won't get full functionality from the TB dispaly (no TB, FW or ethernet on the back of the monitor) but if I can get video and USB between the Mac and the displays, that would be enough. I haven't seen any docuemtnation anywhere deatailing wether or not that TB displays will work with existing video cards / Mac Pro's, or if I'll have to do a full round of upgrades including my Mac Pro and the ATI 5770. And as you know, there are no TB video cards on the market at this time. My timing basically *****...
My plan was to return the Cinema Displays while I still can, fall back to a spare Dell 21" that I have lying around the house for a few weeks (yukkkk..), and then figure out what to do with the TB diplsay as they get closer to release. I'm contempling upgrading my Mac Pro, but if I can stick with what I have, it would save me some cash.I woudln't even mind upgrading my video card, but I just dropped $2000 on these 2 Cinema Display's last week, and I feel like they are already outdated.
PS - I am constantly selling gear, so resale value and having the "latest and greatest" are pretty important to me, hence the interest in the TB displays.

  • 27 Cinema Display flickers on cursor change

    Hello,
I've recently purchased a 27" Cinema Display and hooked it up to my mid 2010 13" MBP. Everything works fine except for one really annoying thing: The Cinema Display flickers when the mouse cursor changes. I've done a thorough search through the community threads and haven't found anybody who's experiencing the same problem. Could anyone please tell me if they've run into this issue, and if so if there's any way of fixing it.
    Thanks!

Might be related to the thread below.
To give you a quick summary, try either of the following:
    - use your macbook's charger rather than the cinema display magsafe connector
    - increase the brightness to 7 bars or more
    - simply unplug the magsafe used by the cinema display

  • Cinema Display 30" and MBP - No Picture

I have a 2.16 Core Duo Macbook Pro 17". Today I purchased a 30" Cinema Display at the Apple store.
Because of issues I had heard about I had the Apple employees help me open the box and plug in the monitor to a Macbook Pro on the floor to check for dead and hot pixels and other screen problems. None found. I was so psyched!
I get it home and set it up. I run the DVI cable over to my Macbook Pro and nothing... The MBP screen goes blue and then refreshes when the monitor is attached or detached like it detects it, but under system profiler it never registers an additional display (and I did refresh the info). The soft power button on the Cinema Display triggers my computer to give me the shut down/sleep dialog so something is registering.
Basically everything works on the display but the picture. I just get a black screen. I hooked up my wife's G4 1.67 and it drives the screen just fine with a picture.
    Any thoughts?

    I have owned a MacBook Pro (15" / 2.16GHz / 2GB) and 30" Cinema HD Display since September 2006.
The display's DVI, USB, and FireWire cables are all connected to the MacBook Pro. A keyboard (with mouse) and iPod dock are connected to the display's USB ports, and two LaCie D2 drives are connected to the display's FireWire ports.
The display has remained blank at start-up on two occasions, both since upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5, though that may be coincidental. In any event, unplugging the display's USB cable from the MacBook Pro had the effect of waking the display; plugging the display's USB cable back into the MacBook Pro put the display to sleep.
Try disconnecting the USB and FireWire cables from the MacBook Pro and unplugging any peripherals attached to the display. I found that everything worked fine when reconnected.

  • 27" LED Cinema Display – noise and buzz

    Hello,
I recently purchased a second hand 27" Apple LED Cinema Display, and I now started to have some issues.
The first issue started today, it is some kind of buzz that comes out of the right speaker whenever I lower the brightness of the screen. I have about the opposite happening for other people – whenever the brightness would be above 3/4, a buzz sound would come up. For me it's when the brightness is below 1/4. The lower the brightness, so higher the pitch of the buzz. How weird is that?
The second issue is that, whenever a sound is played, some kind of white noise starts coming from I believe both speakers of the display. Even if I just adjust the volume on the keyboard (which makes a sound as well), this white noise would come up. It would last around 15-30 seconds, and then it would disappear. If headphones are connected to the Mac Pro, it doesn't happen (and it can't be heard in the headphones either). I once hooked up the Mac Pro to a Panasonic TV to test, and there was no buzz coming from the TV either.
Now I just noticed that the white noise is constantly here since the buzz appeared today (when I lower the brightness). Something is failing here I believe. It could also be the graphics card I guess?
Sometimes I get a very quick weird flash on the screen (black & white stripes I believe) for half a second, then they're gone. It's quite rare so it's hard to troubleshoot. Maybe it has to do with the Cinema Display as well. Or perhaps it is my graphics card (It's a Sapphire HD 7950 3 GB – the Cinema Display is connected with Mini DisplayPort). Or it might just be bad drivers for this card – they were never that good apparently.
Perhaps someone knows more than I do
    All helps is appreciated…
    Cheers!

    No ideas?

  • 27 LED Cinema Display Audio and Brightness when powering MacBook Pro

When my 27 LED Cinema Display is powering my (or another) 2009 13" MacBook Pro, I have experienced three issues:
    1. The dropped audio problem other users have mentioned. Shutdown, then disconnect power/usb/displayport, then wait ~15s, then reconnect and reboot temporarily fixes the problem.
    2. I also have the sluggish keyboard behavior when adjusting the volume that others have mentioned.
    3. I have experienced shifts in display brightness which are obvious when the display is dimmed. I have disabled the ambient light sensor as well as any interfering power management or energy saver settings. Opening apps, scrolling and other normal activities seem to aggravate this behavior.
This last strange behavior inspired me to try using a power adapter for the MacBook Pro instead of display's laptop power connector. *Doing so seems to have resolved all three issues.*
It seems that this may indicate an underlying problem with the display's power supply. Can anyone confirm?

I'd like to utilize the ambient light sensor but not if its going to make my screen flicker when it is dim....
    (1) I have never had any deaths associated with my screen, but on rare occasions my display's brightness will flicker when I manually adjust the brightness. The fix I have found for this is to increase the brightness one more setting or decrease it one more setting. Changing the screen from full dim to full bright and then setting the brightness I want sometimes helps, too.

  • Macbook Air - using Cinema Display usb and firewire?

    Hello,
This is the first post for me, however the answer will determine whether I make the jump for an air.
Will the usb hub on the cinema displays work with the macbook air dvi output connector. (essential for me to purchase) would firewire work (bonus if it does)
Unfortunately I have to have ethernet connection because of the setup in my office, and some of the software I use has usb hardware dongles. The ethernet adapter is fine but I also need usb.
When I am on the go the single usb will suffice.
Any advice would be really appreciated.

USB hub works fine on my 23 Cinema display with the Air, haven't tried the others but I use the USB on display to plug in my mobile broadband ( live out in the sticks and don't get cable or DSL ) and it lets me switch between my Air and MB Pro fine.
