23" Cinema vs Dell 2407WFP

Dell is now on sale for $703 - is 23" Cinema display $400 better ($999 + 3yr warranty which is standard for Dell) ?
Did anybody compare these monitors?
TIA
Dimitri

I've seen this discussion a million times on other
forums... and the thing people need to realize is
that the ACD 23" and the Dell 2407 are not at all the
same monitor.... they don't use the same
manufacturer, and they don't use the same technology.
As BSteely mentioned, the Dell uses a S-PVA screen
while the Apple uses an S-IPS screen.
S-IPS screens are superior as far as viewing angle
and color accuracy go. If you just need a good
general home-use monitor, get the Dell you won't know
the difference. BUT... if you do any kind of
professional graphics work (i.e photo retouching,
design, video editing, compositing, etc.) stay away
from PVA screens!
I do, however, wish that Apple would include more
than one input on their monitors. That's one thing
that Dell got right.
(As a side note regarding the 20" models... the Dell
2005 used an S-IPS screen, but they cheaped out for
the 2007 and went S-PVA.)
Thanks for the clarification. My original question was actually about the 20" model, though that's not clear from the posting. I guess with the Dell model now it's luck whether you get the S-IPS or S-PVA display on the 20". So I'm going to go with their smaller 17" model, which got a good review in MacWorld. For my needs, it should suffice, and I can't see paying any extra $500 for the ADC 20". If I could be sure of getting the S-IPS 20" Dell, then I might consider it for a few hundred more than the 1707FP.

  • DELL 2407WFP 24" with Macbook Pro - Need Help!

I just bought a new 2407WFP and am planning on using it with my Macbook Pro. When I connect it (using VGA to DVI conversion into the Macbook Pro), I select the maximum resolution setting for the Dell monitor, however, it just mirrors with resolution of my Macbook Pros's screen. The Dell 2407WFP's screen resolution comes out having the exact same workspace as my Macbook Pro, just bigger. This is not what I want at all. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

The original reply is correct. I do this with my MBP and the 23" Cinema Display all the time. Put your computer to sleep/ close the lid. Make sure the power cable is plugged in, as well as your keyboard and mouse, and the display you want to use. If you have Bluetooth devices it will still work. Simply tap a key on the keyboard and the computer will wake up, sense that the lid is closed, and make the external display your sole & primary display. I use bluetooth devices myself and they work fine. I've even formatted my computer before while attached to the external display and it will sense the display/keyboard/mouse on first startup and work with them. It's wonderfully simple.
If there are USB ports on your Dell monitor then there should also be a USB connector for your computer on the cable. Essentially it's a USB hub, and should work fine provided the USB cable from the screen is attached to your computer. VGA & DVI do not provide USB signals.

  • Dell 2407WFP MacBook Pro Power-Save

I've just picked up a Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and attempted to connect it to my Dell 2407WFP monitor, via DVI with a genuine Mini DisplayPort to DVI connector.
The monitor is working well as an extended desktop, however, when the system attempts to put the monitor(s) to sleep, the Dell gets stuck in a loop. It shows the "going into power-save mode" repeatedly, but never gets there.
The monitor does seem to correctly go into power-save when the system is shut-down.
I've read some similar threads, but none referring to this model.
Any help would be much appreciated

My Dell 2407wfp works fine with VGA, but I couldn't get it to work with DVI.  I narrowed the problem down to a faulty MiniDisplay Port to DVI adapter.  The Dynex brand one was not working properly and kept causing the monitor to attempt to enter power save mode.  (The Dynex adapter would get warm even when no cable was plugged into it!) I bought a genuine Apple adapter at Best Buy and now it works fine.  If that doesn't help try resetting PRAM (command-option-P-R  on start up).

  • Color Profile Keep Resetting (Dell 2407WFP)

I have an issue with OS X where I set the color profile for my external monitor on my MacBook Pro (a Dell 2407WFP) to "Apple RGB" and after a day or so, the operating system resets the profile back to Dell's own "Dell 2407WFP" color profile. I have tried deleting the Dell profile and it reappears later. The color when using the Dell profile are not anywhere near correct but when using "Apple RGB", it looks as it should.
So, is there a way to ensure it never uses the Dell ICC profile or is there a way to stop OS X from changing it back to that one.
I should note that I'm not logging out or restarting my computer when this change happens, it just happens after a while.

  • PB G4 with Dell 2407WFP monitor?

I am looking into buying the 24" Dell 2407WFP monitor. I need to know if my Powerbook will work with it. It has DVI and VGA inputs but I need to know if my 15 Inch Powerbook will work with 1920x1200 Pixels @ 60 Hz.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, J. The reply I posted earlier today to a similar question about a Sony monitor is also largely applicable to your inquiry.

  • MacPro, ATI Radeon X1900 XT + dual Dell 2407WFP

    Hi all,
I have problems running 2 Dell 2407WFP displays in the highest resolution (1920x1200).
I have no problem running 1 display using DVI.
When I add the 2nd display, with DVI, it does not detect a signal. When I change the connection of the 2nd display from DVI to VGA (with adapter) it works. However, now the maximum resolution is 1024x768)
How do I set this system up so that both diplays will show 1920x1200?
    Thanks,
    Oscar.

Does it make a difference which way display you connect to which port as you should be able to use DVI with both displays. Also, check you cables. Make sure they both work. Also, try the usual round of resets like PRAM…

  • PowerMac G5 DP 1.8GHz/GeForce FX 5200 - DELL 2407WFP 24" LCD compatibility?

    Hi all,
I am running Mac OS 10.3.9 (up-to-date) and would like to ask if there's anyone using and/or knowing about the following compatibility:
PowerMac G5 dual processor 1.8GHz with NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (64MB VRAM)
    and
DELL UltraSharp 2407WFP 24-inch Widescreen Flat panel LCD Monitor
I have the PDF spec sheet for this DELL monitor, but unfortunately couldn't find accurate info about this particular and possible scenario.
    Related info:
Size (Viewable Image Screen): 24 inches (24-inch viewable image size)
    Optimal Resolution: 1920 x 1200 at 60Hz
Connector Type: Analog, DVI-D (Digital) with HDCP
Other Connectors/Features: S-Video, Composite, Component, Integrated 9-in-2 media card reader/slots, Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 Ports, Kensington security port
Hope that someone can help. I am currently testing a DELL UltraSharp 2007WFP 20-inch Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor and it works flawlessly, but I am interested in paying a little bit more and buy the 24".
    Thank you all in advance,

    Mike: thanks for posting!
As far as I understand, DELL LCD monitors and Apple PowerMac computers (with their standard 64MB graphic cards) don't have any compatibility issues, though none of the forums/threads/movies you point are 2407WFP related.
Meanwhile, I have emailed DELL and trusting their reply, they assure all of their current line LCD monitors use the latest revision, probably REV A03, as described in this recent Apple discussion:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3541462&#3541462
I will definitely give the DELL UltraSharp 2407WFP 24-inch Widescreen Flat panel LCD Monitor a try and will return to this thread with some conclusive feedback.
Again, thank you for taking your time reading/guiding me.

  • Using a Dell 2407WFP with two Macs at the same time?

Hi ... I have a Dell Ultrasharp 24" WFP display that I was using with my old G4. Connectivity isn't the issue ... it works beautifully on both the G4 and my new Mini. I've read that I can put the VGA cable on the G4 (no biggie -- it's what I was using before) and I have the DVI on the Mini.
What I want to know is: Can I (and is it wise to) have both machines running at the same time and toggle the display between the two or should I keep one machine off when the other is on? There is a button on the display for toggling between a variety of displays.
I've activated file sharing, etc. on the old box, but there are some things I still can't do unless I'm on the G4 desktop -- mostly my graphic apps. I've been holding off from swapping cables around, but now it's getting to the point that I need to get back on the G4 because of apps that I don't have on the Mini.
I haven't put the VGA cable back on the G4 yet. It seems like it -should- work -- I just need some verification that it will or won't futz up something. I think what I might be most concerned about is that the monitor isn't powerful enough to run both machines at the same time, but I could be wrong.
The info at the Dell site is somewhat dated.
    TIA!

I use a KVM switch with a Dell monitor that has DVI and VGA inputs. I only route the K an M portions (keyboard and mouse) through the switch. The computers connect directly via VGA and DVI to the Monitor, and then I use the monitor's switch to make the video switch. Works fine. Don't worry about taxing the monitor.
I'd suggest buying the KVM switch from a vendor with easy return policies, since it can take a few tries to find a model you like.

  • I have a problem with Dell 2407WFP

i just bought dell 24" lcd conecting with my macpro now with 7300GT.
the problem is... display doesnt match with sound.
the lcd is late about 1 frame
when i watch DVD,,,i edit movie stuff...i just play quicktime movie...whenever..
    i can feel it.
so i edit sound track from quicktime movie 1 frame late in the final cut pro... it Does MATCH!
    is it normal?
    please help me!
oh! i called Dell korea, and asked about it...
    but they just said that their product doesnt support Mac officially..-_-;;;;

I have the 2407 and the 2405 on the ATI card on the Mac Pro, and there is no delay. Maybe it's the graphics card? I also edit and game, and the monitors work great. Both 24" monitors and it's a dual monitor setup, so I don't know what your issue may be.
If you think it's the monitor, you should tell Dell and exchange it for a new one. Otherwise, it's the graphics card or something since my monitor works flawlessyly.

  • Apple 20"Cinema or Dell 2005FPW or Dell 2405FPW

I'm looking for a new LCD display and have narrowed my options down to these three. Main use will be Photo retouching and iMovie,
    I have a 1.6ghz G5 Powermac currently using a 17"CRT Studio Display
Any comment or experiences would be appreciated

Reviews would point out the Dells have a different backlight that is brighter and produces more faithful colours unless you are working with print media where the ACDs backlight produces a more, don't have the technical term, muddied colour representation that will faithfully reproduce the colours that can be output in print form. If you had clients that looked at your images on a stock Dell and then saw the printed output they wouldn't like it because the colours to them looked more vibrant on the Dell than what they got on paper. (see anandtech reviews, etc.)
iMovie wouldn't be a worry. That said you should be adjusting down the brightness of the Dell (through the individual colours, not the limited brightness control in the on-screen-menu) and create a custom colour profile, which means calibrating it if you do any form of print work.
If you weren't mentioning anything dealing with printed works I would say the Dell would be a fine out-of-box monitor with the least effort to get working right away. With print work I still lean towards the ACD for people wanting the least hassle to work with print.
I don't do print work, I work with photographs and graphics for the web and the Windows colour profile is the default in that world which is fine (Dell's are tuned to that out of the box) The Apple colour profile is (ACD) tuned for print.
Re 2005FPW to 2405FPW its your choice. Also consider ergonomics with any of these monitors. I found that with the larger displays on my desk that my head/viewing angle led to strain in my neck and shoulder/back muscles which would cramp up after extended view.
If you want to in future buy a HDTV tuner with DVI output then keep in mind that the 2005FPW is just a hair too short on vertical lines to be truly capable of displaying the full 1080 format of HDTV.
Lot's to think about. For me, I went with the 2005FPW. At the time the 20" ACD was well over $1,100 to buy. The 2005FPW I got for $460 which was more than half the ACD. The LCD screen is the same, the brighter backlight and logic boards are different (more inputs on the Dells, and USB2.0 ports). I also got a 3 year warranty over Apple's 1 year. Little known fact is you can even buy the Dell monitors with the 5 year warranty, its just a few dollars more for every additional year of warranty on the units.
That said, it wasn't the only deal that sold me. I took the savings, bought $8 in appliance paint, and spent my savings on another Mac (the mini) with a new wireless keyboard and mouse on top. One weekend project and I now have a monitor that looks as good as the Apple computer.
The cat is from a Nikon Digital SLR, if you can imagine the raw image was more than 4 of those monitors put together to represent the actual picture without being resized.

  • 24" Dell (2407WFP) to replace 20" Formac as second screen to a 23" ACD?

    Hi,
I currently have a 23" ACD as my primary screen and a Formac 20" (1600x1200) as my secondary screen.
I'm thinking of replacing the Formac with a Dell 2407, which will give me the following advantages:
    1. Bigger previews of the currently selected image im Aperture or Photoshop
    2. Ability to rotate to Portrait
    3. lots of inputs for my old Xbox etc for some quality gaming time when my other half is watching telly.
    2. & 3. are nice and the main reason for not getting another 23" ACD.
What do people think? Any reason why I should have the Dell as primary and the ACD as secondary? This would lose me the ability to rotate the screen with Aperture's selected image on it but I guess I could compensate by going into full-screen mode and rotating.
    Thanks,
    Steve

I'd make it a condition of purchase that I could check it out.
How good is the older 23" display?
I gather there are DVI and ADC versions - any difference between the two, other than the cable? I have a DVI to ADC adapter if necessary - my G5 has ADC and DVI but my new Mac Pro will have 2 DVI.

  • Dell 2407wfp and card reader and Mac Pro

Does the card read work when monitor is plugged into a MacPro?
I did not install any software but just plugged my 2407wfp into my Mac Pro using DVI port and it recognized the montior. I inserted a cf card into the monitor but nothing happend. Do I need to install any software for the usb ports and card readers to work on my Mac Pro?

It should do. What I think you've missed is to connect the USB uplink cable (a standard USB2 A to B) from the display to your MP.

  • Apple 23" Cinema vs Dell 22" E228WFP

I can get the Dell for just under $300. Apple has the refurbed 23 for $750. It seems like a no brainer to me but I would appreciate some input.
I don't know if the clarity of the screens would be much different. I've been using a ViewSonic 21" CRT for 10 years and it's finally giving out. I'm expecting the text on the LCD's will not be as crisp as on my CRT.
So I'm just wondering what others have experienced. Thanks!

Text will be crisp if you use the LCD at its native resolution, and use DVI. There will be no flicker, but there may be a slight lag with fast moving images. LCDs have some color shift if not viewed straight on. The Apple displays have a wider viewing angle than some other brands. If possible, see the displays in operation before buying. That will also give you a chance to look for bad pixels. They are not common, but there is no guarantee you will get none.

  • G5 + Dell Monitor

Hi, I have a G5 and tried hooking my Dell 2407WFP monitor to it & the font is extremely fuzzy. This is especially true in programs like Quark. I have it at the highest resolution w/ font smoothing set for flat screen (although I tried every setting) and it is still blurry. Are there any fixes for this??

personally I think macs dont like pc brand items. I have a G5 and attached an HP lcd to it and it became fuzzy. But then I put the hp monitor back on an hp pc and it was clear again. So sticking with higher brands of monitors for a mac is probably a good idea since are Lacie's work great on the G5's.

  • Two 23" HD or two DELL 24" LCD ???

    Hi guys,
I am thinking on buying either two Apple 23" HD or two 24" DELL (2407WFP 1:1000 contrast; ready for High Definition input!)
I'm still using a PC but my question is more in terms of quality; Currently I'm using two 19" monitors (almost 10 hours a day) and the only thing that I'm concern is the quality of the screens (don't want to be too tired).
I have an iBook and the screen's quality is phenomenon; this is why I doubt the two options.
Dell offers a contrast ration of 1:1000 HD ready, while the apple 1:700 HD
I wonder if anyone can advise.
    thank you

I'm using both right now. I had the Dell 24" for a year on my PC, looks great with WindowsXP. But not with OS X, things doesn't seem that correct color and sharpness as it did with WindowsXP. I just started using 23"ACD for my MacBookPro, OS X looks a bit nicer than it did on the Dell.
Base on your setup, I'm guessing you are a designer? If so, go for the 23"ACD since the dell have some color-banding probem when u picking colors. If you going to be mostly use it for general usage or power computing, the Dell is fine.
