23" Display seems to show bold fonts in Safari and Mail

Hi,
I have just installed my new 23" Apple Cinema display and in some applications some fonts seem extra bold. The unread mail number is bold. The blue headlines at www.theregister.com at extra bold.
Is their something I am missing to fix this? Other than that it is a lovely display.
Best wishes
Michael

I think it's likely that you haven't quite adjusted to the display yet. Depending on what you were previously using it can be quite a difference not only in contrast and brightness but the cinema displays are 100 dpi which is probably not much more than most desktops but it's a much larger scale than a notebook display.
I suppose it could be a glitch,
You might check your System Preferences> Appearance>
and make sure that the font antialiasing at the bottom is 8 (which is the standard setting) I think the OS X default changed to 4 somewhere along the line and that screws up some apps.
Other than that it could be a real glitch in the font caches. You can simply remove caches if they become corrupt and new ones will be created. You caches are located:
/Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/501/
The last directory is the user (501) which is the default setup with one user, you can just trash all users though if you have more.
Other than that the only possibility is that ether your system fonts are corrupt or your extras.rsrc containing the font settings have been altered (both highly unlikely) and require admin privileges.

  • Safari and Mail fonts problem 10.4.2

So I cleaned my fonts up and left the core fonts in system>library>fonts as one is supposed to but now I get this [img src="http://www.markclay.net/Picture%201.png]. Mail also presents the same problem .
    Firefox offers no such problem.
I've set the fonts on safari and mail to be one's I know are running but to no avail. Any clues?
    Thanks

What the h was going on
    there then?
Some non-Unicode fonts that users install are constructed in ways that make them incompatible with OS X Cocoa apps, because they will replace the real fonts and generate gibberish. Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic are the two most common.

  • Problem with fonts display in safari and mail ???

    hello !
sometimes i have problems with fonts display
safari use a mathematics font instead of my preferences fonts
i have to copy-paste in a text-editor to see the right font !!!
i have the same problems sometimes in mail
is anybody have infos about that problem ?
    thanks !
    p.s. mail version 1.3.11 - safari version 1.3.1

OS X cocoa apps like Safari and Mail don't like non-Unicode fonts using common names that replace Latin with symbols or other scripts. Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic are common culprits. You need to remove such fonts to solve the problem.

  • Display/Fonts screwed up in Safari and Mail.

I encountered this problem a year ago on a someone else's mac, and now I have it again on my mac. For some reason my Safari and Mail are screwed up. I think its related to fonts and I've tried fixing it to no avail--also creating a new user fixes the problem.
Safari displays some kind of garbled text on the Apple News pages (and subsequent pages). Most other sites aren't effected BUT do look different. Firefox, for example, is NOT effected.
Mail. Where the left menu (in box, trash, sent, etc) where it should be highlighted when on that line/menu item..big circles of pixelated crap are displayed. Also, most mail is unreadable.
However, like I said, creating a new user fixes the problem. I'm not sure how to restore my user to its correct display.
I haven't used my mac lately and the only thing I can trace my steps too was recently installing a large font library.
    Need help!!

    Christopher --
    You said
. . .the only thing I can trace my steps too was recently installing a large font library.
    There's your problem.
Read the Links Tom provided for you.
(That Garbled Fonts one is great, Tom !!)
If you follow his advice, check the usual suspects, and you still have problems, you could take your Users (YourName)>Library>Fonts folder to the desktop. Rename it "Trouble Fonts."
Then try Safari again. If it works, it's one or more fonts in the large font library you installed. Then comes the fun part of figuring out which one it was.

hi there i have issue in mavericks i thing so because now in 80% the battery shows it has 3 hours and 5 minutes left only using safari and mail....is there any fix or update.....help appreciated....

Is the MacBook/Air still covered under any AppleCare plan?
If you are in the US or Canada, the Apple Store with Genius
bar can have a look at it, and diagnose it for free; you'd have
to set an appointment at a store nearest you, for them do do it.
Not sure how old the unit is or how it was used, charged, or re-
charged; but those are the kinds of little things that may affect
battery life or subtract possible useable Cycles off its life.
Some users of MB/Air models (and MB/Pro, etc) had noticed
a loss of battery capacity after an upgrade to Mavericks. So
that may be some kind of revision to how the battery is seen
by the newer OS X. No idea if Mavericks uses more power.
To see an expert or specialist about this issue, for advice, &
or test/diagnose may be an idea. Could be it needs a new
battery. How does the rest of the battery/power specs look?
Perhaps the MacBook just wants to get out on the town...

My display is only showing about 2/3 the pic and when I upload the memory card to my PC that is what actually is being taken by the camera.

When anything happens you don't know how, reset the camera back to factory defaults.  Try again.  If the condition remains try the next simplest step.  A new SD card and/or reader. A new USB cable or slot in the computer.  A new battery.  You know the easiest and cheapest.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
According to Kurt Lang...Helvetica Fractions is a known source of many font issues. Kurt Lang also has an excellent treatise called Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther.

  • Bolder fonts in Safari

Hi, I have noticed that fonts in my web browsers are bolder then they should be (comparing to my friend's computer with the same OS X but different monitor). I have launched System Preferences, but everything seems OK - anti-aliasting is ON and turn off smoothing is for fonts smaller than 8.
Do you have any ideas what might cause the problem?

    You're welcome.
It is always a good idea to reload and bypass the cache after you have made changes and uploaded new files.
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache.
    * Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
    * Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
    * Press "Cmd + Shift + R" (MAC)

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
    See if that helps...

  • Can't seem to use some fonts in LIbrary AND System Folders

Hi. I installed some new PostScript fonts in my Library/Fonts folder, but neither Adobe InCopy nor MS Word show them in their Font menus. How can I get these fonts to show up (in this case, many versions of Franklin Gothic)?
I also note I have MANY fonts in my System/Fonts folder. My impression is some are usable in Word and some are not. Apple Help says nothing about this folder; I imagine I put them there when I got the new machine. Should I move them all or partially to the Library? If so, what the heck is this System/Fonts folder for?

Hi, and welcome (back) to Apple Discussions.
I believe the System/Fonts folder is the folder for fonts used by the system itself. If I am correct, you could create major problems by moving those fonts anywhere.
If you like, you can download DeLocalizer which will allow you to remove foreign fonts and languages you don't need. That will clear out some of those fonts in the System/Fonts folder.
This doesn't solve your problem with the new PostScript fonts not showing up in your applications, but it does explain your other question. Since I've never really used 10.2, I can't address the problem of the fonts being absent without leave. 10.3 has Font Book for adding fonts, which I believe did not exist in 10.2.

  • Update Safari 5.1.2, I get all fonts in bold in Safari and Mail

Hello, since installing the Safari update, in the search engines Google, google translator, and many pages, I get all the text in BOLD, I also come in custom templates MAIL, I also go on bold at this time to bring them this message in apple support, and when I change from bold to normal, I leavethis off. Please tell me how to fix it, thanks.

Been a lot of that going on.  That is just apple rushing to get updates out there without fixing the Bugs.  They are currently working on a solution.  Check for updates daily.  As far as retrieving your user name and pass code.  I think that ship has sailed.  Time for a new one.

  • Font issues in Safari and mail

I'm experiencing some annoying font display issues. At least I'm pretty sure it's font related. In Safari there are some pages that add about 5 or 6 blank lines under test causing the page to be very spread out. In Mail this is also happening with RSS messages and the message count next to the mailbox. It's not a life threatening issue, just a very annoying one.
Anyone know of a way to fix this? I have tried going into Mail preferences>fonts & colours>mailbox fonts and i can change the fonts and so on, but can't remove the space below the fonts. One annoying part of all of this is it's causing the message count highlight (the little circle around the message count to be this huge balloon). I have a screen cap, but couldn't find anywhere to post it here.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

I've uploaded a screen cap to give you an example of what's going on. Anyone else experiencing this or know how to fix it?

  • Font Renders as Chinese in Safari and "Mail" applications

certain fonts render as an eastern type font (completely unreadable) when using safari or the mail applications in ox 10.3.9.
I have tried changing the appearance in the preferences but it makes no difference. Any help will be much appreciated!

Often the cause of this is the font Helvetica Fractions. Get rid of it if you have it. Send me a screenshot if you want to verify this is the problem (click on my name for the address).

  • Font book is sick and causing Address Book, Safari, and Mail problems

Address Book, Mail, and Safari will only run if I have Font Book open. If I try to open the programs without opening Font Book they don't appear and I have to Force Quit and reopen after opening Font Book.
I run a publishing company and load and unload lots of fonts to Font Book. I guess its something I loaded recently because I now have the problem on both the computers I work on. I have no idea which fonts might be causing the problem.
    What can I do?

    Hello Dave,
If you've already tried cornelius' suggestion and wound up in the same place, then you've likely added a corrupt font or two to those two Macs. While the steps to clean up Font Book are correct, a bad font will immediately corrupt the new Font Book database when loaded.
So try this. Create an empty folder on your desktop and move all of the fonts you added to those Macs to the empty folder. Then perform the funtion to clean up font book again. Lastly, download and run Mark Douma's Font Finagler to clear the font cache files on the system, since they will also be damaged.
If that clears things up, then use Font Doctor to examine your fonts in the temporary folder on your desktop to repair them (if possible) before adding them back to the system.

  • Jumbled fonts in Address Book, Safari and Mail apps

The fonts become jumbled (just weird characters, where names in the Address book should be and in fine print on web pages and the To/From boxes in Mail) in these OS apps after the computer has been on and to fix it I have to restart or if that doesn't work, throw away the Cache folder and sometimes the Preferences folder in the Library on my HD
Is this a glitch in System X? I've had the same thing happen to my G5 at work.
    What is the fix?

The fonts become jumbled (just weird characters,
where names in the Address book should be and in fine
print on web pages and the To/From boxes in Mail)
The usual fix is to get rid of bad fonts and clean your font caches (use Fontfinagler for caches, use google to find it). The most common bad fonts are Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic. Send me a screen shot if you want (click on my name for the address).
