23" Studio Display Directly into Quicksilver DP G4?

Just got a new 23" Cinema Display in anticipation of getting a new Mac Pro next week -- I'd like to plug it into my Quicksilver 1G DP G4 in the meantime to replace my older 17" Apple TFT Flat Panel Display. The plugs look similar, but I don't want to make a -- rather unlikely -- mistake that might in some way harm the monitor or the computer -- Can I just plug it in? Do I need an adapter? Thanks in advance for any help.

It's plug and play, so that's not an issue.
The debate about running the clamshell closed is so that, if the extra desktop space is not required, there is no point "stressing" the video ram and videocard and cpu by having the other display running - all resources can turn to the external display.
As for extending the desktop, yes you can do that with Photoshop - you have the space of the PB and the new display, entirely up to you what you put where - just drag across.
Performance wise, I don't imagine that Photoshop would cause as many difficulties as say video editing might, and I've not come across anyone saying that they have had performance issues from running the extra display - you may get some extra heat as the processor is taxed though.
If in doubt, you could test at an Apple Store or reseller.
Also, you might find getting extra ram a useful upgrade.
Hope that helps, best of luck.

  • Older Studio Display Problem

I have an older (clear base & grey/white stripe) Apple Studio Display hooked into an older 2GHz PowerPC G5 running 10.4.11. I went to turn the machine on as usual by touching the sensor on the display. The machine turns on, but nothing displays. Checked connector, still same problem. Hooked old CRT into other slot on card (GeForce FX 5200) via ADC adapter, and that works, but nothing on ASD. System Profiler recognizes the ASD, says it's on online, but no picture on screen. Any help would be appreciated.

Personally, it sounds like the back light went out. I don't think it is worth fixing. Go splurge on a 24" Apple LCD Display

  • Export from FCP directly into DVD studio pro?

Is it possible to export from FCP directly into DVD studio pro? If not, what is the preferred file format because my exported quicktime files come up as "incompatible format" when I try to add them into my DVD project. Any help is appreciated.

You need to encode audio as well from Compressor. You'll have 2 files - audio and video.

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

  • Displaying a 3DSmax model in Microsoft Visual Studio using Direct X

I was wondering if there is a way I can display a scene that I have created in 3DS max in Visual Studios using Direct X
    Many Thanks

Can you explain more clearly what you are trying to do? What part of your code have you implemented and what specifically do you need help with?
Are you writing a Direct3D application? If so, are you targeting Windows Store apps or desktop apps?
You cannot directly open a scene in Visual Studio, but you can certainly write an application which can parse and display one. See

  • My 11 year old Apple studio display died. what is best connection with new monitor

The lCD light finally quit after 12 years. So I bought a very cheap acer /led widescreenS200HQL 19 inch as a cheap quick replacement for my monitor on my  quicksilver G4 933. Question is it is connected to the second display port VGA... Is it worth buying a connector so it can be connected to the larger DVI port(where the apple studio display was connected?) will that make any difference??? Things seem fine but was curious as to the difference???

Many of the Studio displays were ADC. Are you sure that other port is really DVI and not ADC?
My 2004 MDD vid card has one DVI and one ADC connector. I have it connected to a Viewsonic display from about 2007 with both VGA and DVI ports. When I connect the DVI port directly to the DVI port on the G4, the native res looks good but it too small to read (old, tired eyes). If I change the desktop res to make things a little bigger, the image looks like carp--fuzzy and possibly some distortion.
If I use the DVI-to-VGA adapter on the computer and connect it to the monitor. the image is shape and proper at any support desktop res I select.
    You mileage may vary.

  • Apple Studio Display power

    Hi--
Just hooked up a new Mac Mini with an old (G3 era) Apple Studio Display. It works fine, but I know there must be a power adapter that will let me plug the monitor directly into a wall outlet without having to keep it plugged into the old G3--I just can't find one. Is there such a cord, and if so, where? If not, please tell me that my only option is NOT to keep this huge G3 sitting around forever.
    Thanks!

I think you need the Apple DVI to ADC Adapter:

  • Brand new mac mini and Studio Display 17" LCD- 2 adapters needed- problems?

From many forum posts here and elsewhere it seems I can in fact hook up my Studio Display 17" LCD monitor if I used the ADC-DVI adapter. But has anyone used the ADC-DVI adapter AND the DVI-mini DVI adapter that came in the box with the Mac mini?
Apple tech support told me on the phone tonight that doing so would "fry" the Studio Display.
Has anyone had any problems using this? Will running it through 2 adapters cause problems as opposed to the older minis where you could just do ADC-DVI and then into the computer?

Were you able to get your display working? I have an LG 27" at home connected to a Mid 2012 (June) MacBook Air 13" that has absolutely no issues. However, I just obtained the same Samsung monitor you have and appear to be having the same issue.
The only solution that I have found is to unplug the power from the back of the monitor or at the power supply each time my computer either wakes from sleep, screensaver, or a display that is powered off. This seems to be true via the following connections:
    1. HDMI to DVI thunderbolt adapter
    2. HDMI to Thunderbolt adapter
The display powers on with a slight flicker and then will immediately stop displaying the image on screen. What's especially strange here is the MacBook Air still believes the display is connected -- my login screen or active apps that are displayed on the external monitor do not move to the MacBook Air display as if it's no longer connected.
I hope someone has a solution to this issue! Thanks!

  • Can No Longer Drag JPG files From Finder Directly Into .fla Stage?

For the past six months I have been following a manual process to convert JPG files (exported from InDesign) into SWF files for display advertising assets.
Using pre-built FLA files as templates (configured with clicktags):
Open FLA templates (3 separate files for 3 IAB ad sizes)
Drag JPG from Finder directly into stage of FLA file, aligned to
Publish to output folder for renaming
Today, for no apparent reason, I can no longer drag anything into the stage of any FLA file.  Not just the pre-built templates.  Nothing will drag & drop into an FLA stage.
    What I have tried:
    Restarted Mac
    Reset Flash preferences
What I know I can still do:
Drag files from Finder into the Library, and drag into FLA stage from there
    "File > Import to Stage..."
This works but because of my naming convention it prompts to import them all each time because Flash sees the sequence
This is not another step I am willing to contend with for my manual workflow
Me and my creative team need to process hundreds of assets like this each week, so I'm very anxious to discover why functionality that was working, suddenly stopped.
    Running:
    MacBookPro Retina OS X 10.8.5
    Flash CS6 v. 12.0.2.529

just want to add my annoyance to the pile here. I can't see any logic behind removing the drag and drop function, especially when adding a new folder is now a multi-step process that is far from obvious. to start a new playlist with local folder content you now need to:enter settingsclick into advanced settings (basically all settings now seem to be "advanced"?)manually find and add the foldergo through the adventure of finding the files in your library.
-- because they may or may not be listed under "local files" - you won't know because Ctrl+F is also removed. so you have to remember/know what the album you added is called and search for that. if you have a mixed bag of file names from various albums, you're basically shafted; there's no way to find them all with a single search.then you can add them to playlisteta: but wait! there's more! if you have more than 15 files? you're **bleep** out of luck, because the search will only display the first 15 hits among your local files, and then show you spotify library tracks.I can't help but feel as though spotify is doing everything they can to stop us using spotify to listen to local files, as bugs that make it more or less impossible persist through multiple versions - and now features that seem to me to be basic functionality are being removed?mega minus points from someone who's been using spotify since 2008.

  • New Mac Pro Won't Work With Old Studio Display

    Hi,
Just got a new Mac Pro Desktop 8-core only to find out my old Apple Studio Display 17" won't work without a $100 adapter. We're thinking of just buying a new monitor instead. My question is will other brands now work direclty with the new Macs - or would they also need adapters? Is a DVI port the same as a DVI-D port?
    Thanks for any info...

Thanks so much for the response, Malcolm, I really appreciate it! My old monitor is an LCD, but what we decided to do is since the adapter we found (and HAD to get from Apple directly) was going to cost $99!! We went and bought a brand new Dell monitor instead for $238 - it's fully compatible with the new Mac, and it's 23" (my old one was a 17") - so all's good!
    Thanks again,
    Jacki

  • Display Problem - Video noise with 15" Powerbook and 23" Studio Display

I just bought a used 23" Studio Display to act as a second monitor for my 1.0 GHz 15" Powerbook. In my set up, the display is rather noisy -- there are consistant flickering lines of white pixels throughout the display. The lines are worst in dark areas, though they may just be showing up under contrast. The Powerbook it is connected to still looks normal.
The first strange thing is that the display works perfectly with another 1.25 GHz 15" Powerbook I have to test it on. In both cases, I have connected the monitor to the Powerbooks with a new Apple brand powered DVI to ADV Adapter.
The second strange thing is that the display seemed to act fine until I reinstalled my Wacom tablet driver so that it would work with dual displays. I've uninstalled the driver, but it the problem is still there.
The third strange thing is that the display is fine while booting up. The blue boot up screen is very crisp looking and noiseless. It only starts showing noise when the login screen shows up.
Any thoughts about what may be causing the problem or how to fix it would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    angus.
    Powerbook 15" G5 dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   23" studio display

Well I called AppleCare yesterday and, believe it or not, we actually got the USB ports acting normally - well at least I can boot up with the keyboard plugged into the back of the monitor.
They had me reset the Open Firmware and that seemed to do the trick. Of course, the night before I updated to 10.4.10 so that may have had something to do with it, too. No idea.
As for the power sensor button thing, they wanted me to plug the monitor into a different system, either at a Genius Bar or a friend or whatnot to see if it would behave in the same manner - not wanting to activate. I took it to school with me and hooked it up to one of my teacher's G5 and it behaved the same way. It took like 15 times touching the sensor to bring the system up.
So I'll be calling them back and see where they want to go with this. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a new shiny monitor - or not...

  • Strange Problem on my 17" Studio Display

Ok, just to get the specs out of the way - 2 17" Apple Studio Displays, both connected with ADC to DVI adapters to a Dual Core 2.3 PowerMac G5, running OSX 10.4.7, 2.5 GB RAM.
Saturday night we had a VERY bad storm - my wife and I were out when it hit, and my computer was on. I wasn't too worried as both displays and the tower are running off of a UPS/Surge Protector.
By the time we made it home, the battery backup had run out of juice and the system was shut down. We were out of power for about 12 hours. When the power came back up on Sunday - I booted up my mac.
As the initial Apple logo bootup screen popped up - I knew something was wrong. The background was a dark gray and the apple logo light gray - the opposite of what it is normally.
After the computer finished booting I'm left staring at my 2 displays in amazement. The display on the left looked as if the display had been inverted in the Universal Access Pane, and the right display was perfectly normal.
I can go into the Preference Pane, or use the shortcut CmdOption+Cntrl8, and all this does is flip which display looks normal and which one is inversed. I can't seem to find a way to get them both to display the same.
I've repaired permissions, I've rebooted, I've reset the PRAM, I've trashed preferences, I've scoured the Apple Discussion boards, I've spent hours on Google, I've run hardware tests on my G5, swapped the display outputs on the card to see if it was the video card - but the same display always shows inverted. I've also connected the suspect display to my Powerbook and it does the same thing, which leads me to be pretty certain its an issue with the display - not the CPU. I have no idea what to even try next.
Does ANYONE have any ideas for me to check out? I'm open to anything at this point. I've found a place that sells replacement parts, but have no clue what part I would even go about replacing.

    1. Shut down the computer. If you cannot do this because the mouse or keyboard are unresponsive, then hold the power button for ten seconds.
    2. Verify that the system is shut down by pressing CAPS LOCK. It should not light.
    3. Power-up the system and let it start.
    4. If the + key continues to repeat, it is probably a bad keyboard.

  • Mac mini & Studio Display

I've just gotten a Mac Mini and I'm hoping to use it with my 15" Studio Display, Family Number M2454. The monitor is circa 1999-2000. The plug looks perfect for the slot on the Mac mini, but the way it secures itself is different, and thus won't fit. The adapter enclosed with the Mac mini is of no help. Does anyone have a clue what adaptor I should use and where to get one?
    Thanks.
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   also own G4 Cube

Unfortunately, your Studio Display has an ADC type connector. If you look at it you'll see that rather than 'D" shaped like a VGA connector, or Rectangular like a DVI connector, the ADC connector has rounded ends. Thus it won't plug into the mini's DVI port, or the VGA connector on the adapter.
    You'll need a device such as the DVI-to-ADC adapter at http://www.apple.com/lae/displays/adapter/ http://www.smalldog.com/product/12651652 or http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0111-DVAD
As you'll see, there are around $100 so not inexpensive. At that cost, it's almost worth buying a new 17" LCD for what is often little more.
The option to connect it to the VGA adaptor with a suitable VGA-to-ADC adaptor also exists (such as http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1301) but seems rather more expensive.

  • Connecting a 2nd apply studio display

Hey quick question. Im good with Macs but not so good with all the adapters and stuff. heres the problem. thank you.
(both apple studio displays are the LCD versions. they are NOT aluminum. they are the plastic ones.)
