24 bit/96kHz AIFF files an iTunes

Hello - can I import 24 bit 96kHz AIFF files into iTunes (with the AUTOMATIC settings in iTunes Import) and have the files played back as 24 bit 96kHz ... or does iTunes do some internal conversion to some other format?

Thank you cconnaker for your helpful reply!
Patrick, I understood (from reading the Benckmark Media wiki) that there was an issue of iTunes truncating 24 bit wordlength to 16 on playback of 96/24. I have no way of measuring this on my system and wanted to ensure that the effort I am going to to rip vinyl will be rewarded by the highest quality of playback in iTunes instead of the recording/playback software I use.
Helpfully, cconnaker has confirmed this.

  • 24 bit/96kHz AIFF files and iTunes

Hello - I rip my LPs onto the above format. I want to play them from iTunes but I have heard that iTunes is not 'bit transparent' above 24bit/44.1kHz which I think means that I cannot send 24bit/96kHz to my DAC from iTunes.
Is this true with the latest versions? All ideas welcome!
    David

Back in Jan 2003, I convinced the engineering manager on iTunes to make a change so it could properly play 24bit/96kHz files. (The changeover from Sound Manager to Core Audio made it possible.)
I was using a M-Audio Audiophile card at the time, and it worked beautifully. However, I haven't used this feature for ages, so can't say for certain that it still works.
I think the only way to get a definitive answer is to try it.

  • Is it possible to convert to an AIFF file in itunes 10 and beyond, and if so what is the procedure?

Hello.  Is it possible to convert to an AIFF file in itunes 10 and beyond, and if so what is the procedure?
I use FCP7 and often have a sound loop or the like that I need in AIFF format, I normally use itunes to do the conversion, but have heard that version 10 no longer performs this task...?
    Thx for the help!

It still works the same as in past releases.  Go to Edit > Preferences > Import Settings, and set "Import Using" to "AIFF Encoder," and then the option will be available.  Consult this document for details:

  • Aiff files into itunes - please help

I cant drag aiff files to burn as audio cds into itunes 11.1.5. I have created the aiff files in soundtrack pro and am exporting them with a bit rate of 16 and 44.1 khz but can't then input them into a playlist in order to burn them. Help please?

Describe exactly what happens when you try to drag a file into a blank playlist iTunes.  Do they not appear in the playlist?  What happens if you use the "add" feature in the iTunes menu?
Do the files play in Quicktime?

  • I can't import aiff files into itunes as mp3s

I am trying to add some aiff files from an external hard drive to my itunes library. My import settings have mp3 checked under the advanced preferences and I am using the File>add to library command. When the files show up in my itunes library, they are still aiff files. I can then convert them to mp3 under the advanced tab, but I shouldn't have to go through this extra step. Is there a way to change this?

No. If you add MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF or WAV, iTunes will simply add them to the library.
In order to convert them, you have to do it after you add them to the library.

  • Getting An AIFF file onto ITunes

    Hey everyone,
ok, so i have read and reread all of the other posts and replies but none seem to really give an answer. I have a pretty large AIFF file on CD, its 1 track at 1:19:00 long. now when I intially tried saving it, only 2 mins of the track would save. And then when i clicked the Convert to AAC in ITunes, nothing at all would happen.
So Question.. How do I get the entire track into Itunes and also have it able to play on Ipod?
I am not as computer savvy as many people here so if someone coul give me a step by step that would be so helpful..
    Thank you so much.

Thanks, but that didn't work.  I repaired quick time, still not OK; so I repaired itunes and rebooted.  I still get a blank stare from itunes when I try to import a file, and if I try to drag from the desk top, the itunes libraries get "Blued out" with and arrow that says link, and nothing happens.

  • Why can't I copy AIFF 192.0 kHz 24-bit files to iTunes?

I don't seem to be able to import 192khz AIFF files to iTunes. Any ideas? I would like to play my music with iTunes because it's easy to use with iPhone remote etc...

What is the source of the files? iTunes can handle 24/192 stereo files. They aren't 5.1 surround sound files are they?

  • .aiff files need a #1 to import into iTunes. Why?

I am creating an audio only version of a movie that I edited in iMovie by sharing each chapter to QT, compressing it into an aiff file. When I tried to put these .aiff files into iTunes, the files wouldn't play any sound, although the scrubber would move telling me that the file was actually playing. I could preview them in the finder and they would play fine. They would also play as QT files. I could import them into iTines, but when I went into the Information window and looked at the volume, it was set to 0.0, which you cannot change. I got no swirling arrow next to the file name, like you usually do when importing files into iTunes. All of a sudden one of the files worked so I thought I was good to go, and continued importing more of the .aiffs, but I had the same problem with other files I tried to import. I noticed a 1 next to the file that mysteriously worked, so I just renamed each other new file with a 1 at the end of its name and now they all import fine. (It looked like this: chapter24.aif 1) Anybody know why this is? Seems silly, but it works.

  • Itunes - AIFF files

I currently operate itunes using XP with myself as the administrator and my two daughters as users each having an ipod. I recently cleaned up the drives and discovered that many of the songs have both an AIFF file (of approx 50MB) and a MPEG file of approx 5MB. I tried to delete the AIFF file but cannot now play the song. Is it necessary to have both to make the system work and if not how do I get rid of the AIFF file. With approx 1000 songs you can see that the C drive is quickly being used. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not even sure that you can podcast an AIFF file using iTunes. The first item in Apple's Podcast specs says:
Creating your first episode, which can be an audio recording, video, or even a text document. Supported file formats include .m4a, .mp3, .mov, .mp4, .m4v, and .pdf.
Might as well try it though. If it doesn't work, I have a solution. Encode the AIFF to Apple's Lossless Codec (this makes a .m4a file) which is on the list of files that can be podcast.
    Let us know what happens,

  • Can Itunes Import & play 24bit 96khz music files?

Hi there if i imported some 24bit 96khz music files into Itunes will the files remain this format or will Itunes compress them?
Also is my Ipad/Iphone able to play 24bit 96khz files or not?

With the Apple Lightning CCK and iPhone 5 /IOS6 it seems to be okay to play flac format with soft Ampliflac.
However with IOS7 Apple has blocked the way ! it's terrible, Apple Lightning CCK doesn't work, see

Regarding iTunes, it can play your slamping, in case you put the setting in the right one
I can't understand Apple that block these right slampings under powerful devices like 5S... I know they can't sell very heavy files in density buisness but it's always nice to be free to play what we naturaly like !

  • Want to delete 1gb AIFF files from TimeMachine

I've got old audio tapes and record albums (that I purchased and own) which have never come out on CD and I can't buy them legally on-line. I'm importing into iTunes using Toast Titanium 9's Spin Doctor, my old component take deck, and my Roland EDIROL UA-20 USB Audio/MIDI capture device which creates files that are greater than 800mb AIFF files per side of tape.
I can NOT set it to a lower quality rate when using the EDIROL UA-20. I bought one of the iMics from Griffin Technologies but have not successfully been able to get that to work correctly and gave up on it for now.
I import them into iTunes. Use iTunes to convert them to AAC with in 64 kbps which shrinks it down to about 20 to 30mbs. Then I delete the AIFF files from iTunes BUT, I forget about Time Machine and it backs up the AIFF which I don't want it to back up.
How do I go in there without messing things up, and delete those files? The best way for me to find them if there is some way to search a specific folder and sub folders (how do I get there and how to I search?) for AIFF files? And also files greater than 500mb.

To be clear, I want to be able to delete these files from the Time Machine backup.

  • Editing AIFF files in ituines

Can I edit aiff files in iTunes?

    Peter--
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You can't really edit AIFF files in iTunes. You can change the start and stop times by choosing "Get Info" from the "File" menu when you have a song selected. You can also change the EQ and volume for each song, but that's about it.
To really edit your songs, and perhaps add fades, etc., you'll need another program. You can do some rudimentary editing of AIFF files if you have QuickTime Pro, and if you have GarageBand, you can use it to edit AIFFs. There are also some other inexpensive sound editors like SoundStudio and Audacity...

  • Compressor 4 can't export AIFF file

    Hi all!
So yesterday i updated the OS to Maverick. Suddently i couldent open Compressor. I had a video due for yesterday, so i deleted the compressor, and bought the ned compressor 4 from app store. I had to make an AIFF audio file, for use in a FCPX video. I use these things as a professional, and i therefore have to find some kind of solution, and that FAST!
When i try to compress a MP3 file or any kind of format to the AIFF format in 48000 sample rate, compressor makes a track with a bunch of holes in it.
A sample track in the fully working m4a format can be found here:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6737872/14%20The%20Night%20Last%20Night.m4a
And a compression of the same file into a aiff format with a sample rate of 48000:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6737872/14%20The%20Night%20Last%20Night-AIFF %20File.aiff
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!! I SERIOUSLY NEED A SOLUTION FAST!!
    Best regards Andreas

Not sure what's going on and because I have yet to upgrade to 10.9, I'm can't really test for bugs.
In the meantime – to meet your deadlines – I'll just note that you can create your AIFF files in iTunes.

  • Extract audio from MP4 movie file to iTunes library

I downloaded a 5-minute movie, it's now sitting on my desktop as a mp4 QuickTime file, opens and plays fine. I want to turn the audio soundtrack of the movie (one complete song) into an mp3 in my Music library, so I can just play the song on my iPod without opening the movie file (I have an older iPod 60GB that doesn't play movies). Please advise, thanks

Open the movie in the QuickTime Player and Select Export -> Sound to AIFF.
Drop the exported AIFF file into iTunes.
Make sure the iTunes CD Import Settings in Prefs is set to the MP3 encoder.
Right-Click on the AIFF file in the iTunes Library display and select Create MP3 Version.

  • ITunes 7.71 problem with cover art for 24 bit AIFF files

I am unable to add cover art to 24 bit AIFF files. Was able to do this with iTunes 7.7.

I think I have discovered the same problem (no solution, unfortunately, though) working with some shared files from GarageBand, which I believe are 24 bit AIFF at this point. I will have to check when I get back to the computer with my stuff on it, but at least I don't think I'm going crazy when I tried to save.
I could put artwork into the "info" area, and it would stay there so long as the track was playing, but once the track re-played, the artwork was gone. I have even synched my iPod and iPhone, and the artwork has shown there, but I have to try synching when the track is NOT playing to see if it is only capturing the artwork while it's on the file. But, I thought that was weird as well.
I will keep coming back here until hopefully a solution is posted. Here. Or somewhere. Any similar experiences, please also post. I feel better knowing others are experiencing the same or differing but similar difficulties.
