24" cinema display with a 27" iMac as a two monitor setup.

I have just purchased a second hand 24" cinema display to use as with my 27" iMac as a twomonitor setup.
Connected it up and weked fine fot two days.
Now it keep flashing on & off never more than a fraction of a second.
I connected it to my MacBook Pro for about an hour and the problem did not appear.
I also tried the other Thunderbolt socket, still happened but not as often.
Any one an idea, hardware problem of software?
Patrick

The 27' iMac is Thunderbolt, less than a year old so under warranty, the 24" display is MiniPort, the Macbook MiniPort about 3 years old.
I have been using the setup since posting this descussion and it hasnt happened once in the past hour and a half, so its obviosly intermitant, the hardest fault of all to find.
Thank you for your reply.

  • Can I use a 30" Apple Cinema display with a new 27" iMac?

I have a brand new iMac(27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), i7 3.5 GHz, 32MB RAM, 4GB NVIDIA.  I will soon be upgrading it to Mavericks, if that makes a difference.  My understanding is that the resolution on it is 2560 x 1440.
I'm looking at buying a used 30" Apple Cinema display.  I'd like to use it with my new iMac.  The only advantage for me would be that the 30" screen is larger and things on it easier to see (or so I'm guessing).
I need to know if the 30" Cinema display would work with my new iMac, and if it would, as I'm guessing, give me a larger, easier-to-see screen.
I currently have my new iMac connected to my old mid-2010 iMac as a target display (that old iMac has a minidisplay port--no Thunderbolt), and that works great.  I just want a larger screen.
I called Apple support, and the tech rep wasn't sure it would work.  He seemed to think that the 30" Cinema displays were made with different connections.  Some had minidisplay ports (which he thought would work), and some a cord built into them that provided some other type of connection (that I guess would not work as far as he knew).
Can anyone tell me if this would work?  Would my new iMac and its video card support the 30" Cinema display?  Would the result be as sharp and good-looking as my iMac's built-in 27" display, but only bigger (which is what I'm hoping for)?  Any advice is appreciated.
I don't yet know many of the specifics of the 30" Cinema display I'm considering.  I know it is about 3 years old.  And here is a picture of the back of it:

Yes, you should be able use the 30" Cinema Display with your new iMac without problems. You'll need a mini-DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter
I haven't had the 30" myself to test so I don't know if there any caveats. Perhaps someone else here will have personal experience.
    Regards.

    Hi Gilly,
I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.

  • Installation of 27" cinema display with macbook pro silver key and bootcamp

For everyone out there who may be interested in using the new 27" cinema display with an older Macbook Pro Intel with silver keys and bootcamp.
    What is needed:
    1. Apple 27" cinema display.
    2. Macbook pro Intel silver key model
    3. Altona Dual Link DVI to Mini DisplayPort Converter (Model AT-DP400)
    4. Bootcamp 3.1 drivers from Mac OSX Snow Leopard V10.6.3(retail)
    Procedure:
    1. Update your display software on the Mac OS side. Apple has posted an update on their software downloads page, "LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0" After doing so, make sure that the 27" CinDisp is operating correctly and you can change the brightness from the system settings.
    2. On the Windows side, install the bootcamp 3.1 drivers. These are on the Snow Leopard distribution CD. However, there is a bug in the .msi installer that causes the installation to go into an endless loop. This must be resolved during the installation of the drivers. The following article discribes how to do this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2305631&tstart=0
    3. After you have successfully installed the bootcamp 3.1 drivers, then install Apple's bootcamp update: "Apple Magic Trackpad and 27-inch LED Cinema Display Update for Windows 32 bit".
    Good luck, it works!

I have the same MBP and recently bought a 23" cinema display on Craigslist for $140.  It works great.  I had a display port to DVI adapter and it worked fine.  Built a stand to hold the laptop vertically so it's out of the way.  Don't know about older displays but anything with DVI should work fine.
The screen size and resolution are great for photo editing.  I now have the best of both worlds, a display that rivals my wife's iMac and portability.

  • Acrylic 20" Cinema Display with new MacPro

As I read the posts here, to use the old cinema display with an ADC connector I will need to buy Apple DVI to ADC adapter to connect my 20" cinema display with ADC to the new MacPro?
This new DVI to ADC adapter provides power for the cinema display as I understand which is why it's so expensive whereas when cinema display was connected to my Powermac G5 the power came thru the ADC connection?
    Is this correct?

  • Sharing Cinema display with a PC

Is there a way to share (via a swith box) my 20" cinema display with a PC. I know that there are DVI switchers but do they support the fact that the MAC display is powered through the connector interface aand that the firewire and usb is on the same connector as well???
    Thanks

The DVI connector does not carry the power to the display. The cable from the display carries the power, USB, FireWire, and digital signals. At the computer end it is split into separate cables with plugs for USB, FireWire, power and DVI.. The switch would go between this DVI plug and the DVI connector on the computer's video card. The power would not go though the switch. The fancier switches will also have sockets to switch the UBS as well, so a keyboard and mouse plugged into the display will switch to the computer using it. This will also allow computer control of the display brightness.

  • CAN I USE MYApple Cinema Displays WITH MY MAC BOOK PRO

CAN I USE MYApple Cinema Displays WITH MY 13"mac book pro

Your 2014 MacBook Pro should have 2 Thunderbolt ports and 1 HDMI port.  We need to find out what plug your Cinema Display has.
Does the Plug look like this:
    http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/dvi-cables/dviiplug.jpg
If so, then its a DVI connector.   And you would need a Thunderbolt/Mini Display Port to DVI adapter.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/B/mini-displayport-to-dvi-adapter
If not, look on the underside of the Display's frame or base/stand, there should be a model number there.

  • Connect 24" Cinema Display with Mini DisplayPort to new 21.5' iMac

I'm having a bit of an issue attempting to connect my new 21.5' iMac to my Apple Cinema Display. The display has a mini DV port that used to connect into my MacBook Pro but now I see there is no such port on the iMac.  They clearly state they offer support for it but I don't see a way to connect. Any suggestions?

    http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
    19. How do I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac when I have other Thunderbolt devices connected?
When connecting a Mini DisplayPort display or a display using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt peripheral (except as described in question 14), make sure the display is connected at the end of the Thunderbolt chain. You can use only one Mini DisplayPort device in the Thunderbolt chain.
Note: Systems with more than one Thunderbolt port, like an iMac, can have more than one Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor connected with a Mini DisplayPort adapter connected as each Thunderbolt port can support one Mini DisplayPort display.

  • Connecting a 20" Cinema Display (Aluminium) to a iMac 27" with????

    Hello,
according to www.apple.com the Mini DisplayPort/Dual-Link DVI Adaptor is only compatible with MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air equipped with a Mini DisplayPort...
I would like to link my iMac with this beautiful monitor I had hooked to my 1st generation Mac Book Pro... is there a way to do it? I was thinking to buy the Mini DisplayPort/Dual-Link DVI Adaptor, but I HAVE to be sure about its compatibility with the iMac, since it's quite expensive...
    Any other solutions?

  • HD support for 23" cinema display with a 20" intel Imac?

By using a 23" HD cinema display as a second monitor, will it still do HD even though the 20" intel Imac does not show HD? Is there anything special I need to do enable HD in this configuration?
    imac 20" Mac OS X (10.4.8) dual 23" HD

I just received my intel 20 in IMAC and tried to hook it up with my 23 in cinema HD display. The display looks awful - lots of flickering, very grainy, all pink and blue. Thought it was the adapter (DVI to mini DVI), so I changed it. Tried clicking the "detect display" button, tried resetting PRAM, changing resolutions, all with no improvement. Plugged the display back to my old powerbook 15 in and it was picture perfect. My IMAC also has an upgraded 256VRAM. Am I missing something? Any recommendations are welcome.

  • Is it possible to connect an old cinema display (ADC) to an Imac (2012)?

    Hello,
I want to add a second screen to my Imac and I found a Cinema Display (ADC). I went to see the screen and i connect it to my Macbook to test if it works. The guy who sold the screen had an ADC to DVI adapter and I bought an DVI to thunderbolt connector. It didn't work. He also tried to connect it to his Imac and still the screen didn't work. Is it even possible to connect the screen to an Imac?

Is it the Apple version of the DVI to ADC adapter?  The signals from a Mini DisplayPort (or Thunderbolt) to DVI adapter may be weaker than normal DVI signals.  The Apple DVI to ADC adapter amplifies the DVI signals, so can work with signals that are too weak for non-Apple adapters.
An ACTIVE Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter may produce stronger DVI signals.
