24 fps dvd possible?

We shot, edited and finished our project in DVCPRO HD 23.98 720p. Now we are making a letterbox SD version for DVD. Can I compress a MPEG2 in compressor at 24fps then import that into DVDSp and play that back, instead of having to add pulldown to make it 29.97. Or will it play back stuttery? Is it safe, or should i add pulldown?

Hey guys,
actually, most A DVD titles are done from a 29.97 tape that came straight from telecine. Usually they are in DCT or D1 formats. sometimes they will be on Digi-beta.
they do this because:
they were color corrected
the tape will have perfect cadence
minimal degradation in quality of video
minimal tape compression
4:2:2 color space fully intact and complaint
when they are encoding the file, they introduce 3:2 Removal (Inverse Telecine, Telecine Removal, 2:3 Removal, you get the idea).
Some encoders set flags on the file to have the hardware decoders remove the blended fields.
other encoders actually remove the extra fields.
as far as i remember, the DVD spec accepts the MP@ML mpeg-2 format, which is interlaced.
what we see when we create 24"p" files are actually 24PsF files, or interlaced files.
a very good person to talk on this exact matter would be Roger Anderson from Innobits. he has great experience with mpeg-2 encoders. shoot, he is one of the Innobit creators..
anyway, just my .02

There have been a lot of recent reports of difficulties sharing to DVD, but haven't been hearing about unreadable disks. Posibly there was an encoding error. Or it could have been bad media (blank disk).
Does it play in your Mac?
What brand of disks are you using?

  • How to save an AVI w/ as many FPS as possible w/o color decection interfering?

    Hi,
I can't seem to solve this somewhat basic programming logic problem: using a CCD I want to detect a color change in real time (at any FPS rate >10 FPS) and save the video with as many frames per second as the camera can give (71 FPS or as close to it as possible).
The camera is up to 71 FPS but my color detection takes too long to run one iteration of the while loop so I only get effectively 10-11 FPS in my AVI file. 10 FPS is acceptable for the detection response but ideally I would also save an AVI of the process at 71 FPS for historical record that can be further analyzed. I realize what I need is a way to quickly run the 'save to avi' on every available frame (71 FPS) and then in parallel sample 1 in every 7-8 frames for image detection processing (to get the 10 FPS the coding/CPU+RAM limits it to).  I can't seem to write a program that can do the two in parallel without the color detection bogging down my save to AVI or without getting some sort of camera session invalid error.
Someone more clever and experienced please share some logic with me. My attempts with different while loops or conditional case structures just arent improving the FPS. I have attached the most basic version of my program; it achieves what I want but the FPS in this case are going to be equal in both the dection and avi.
Thank you in advance for your time and patience, I am just a student in over my head as usual....

Final Live Detection with save_one loop.vi ‏101 KB

I formatted the code to fit the producer consumer loops but I am not seeing any improvement in the frame rate / frames per second. The way I set it is that every 4th loop iteration of the 'save to avi', one frame gets passed to the detection. Unfortunately I am still only getting about 12-13 FPS and it doesn't get faster as I decrease the amount of frames passed to detection.
Because I didn't see any improvement I ran the 'save to avi file' sequence in its own VI. I found with out any color detection the resulting AVI is still only 12-13  FPS. This means the very simple program (attached) is running much too slow yet I don't see any other way of aquire images and making it into a movie; I am only using the basic IMAQ dx subVIs. Can anyone offer a solution or improvement? Is this data handling or memory related? I am on a fairly new PC...
    Thanks in advance

  • Burning a MUSIC DVD Possible?

Is is possible in iTunes to burn a MUSIC DVD that will play in any DVD Player? Burning a MUSIC CD works fine but I would like to use a DVD because of the greater capacity. The only instructions I've found are how to burn a DATA DVD - for back-up I guess, and playing in some computers. I would really appreciate knowing if this is possible and, if so, how it can be done. Thank you very much.

You cannot create an audio DVD.
Many, many DVD players will play AAC and MP3 files on a data DVD.

  • Storing Footage on Data DVD possible?

    Hi all,
I have a ton of mini-dv tapes with footage. I plan to keep these, but i am wondering if it's possible to transfer them onto DATA DVD's for another, more easily accessible, storage alternative. My plan would be to sort them by year, event, etc. and then place the video files on data DVDs once they are all categorized. Then when i plan to edit a video of something, i can go to that DATA DVD and access the footage i need using something like Mac the Ripper... It would seem so much more organized than having to hook up my camara and search through tapes to find the footage i need.
Is it possible to do this? I'd really appreciate any advice you have to offer.
    Thanks!!
    Karen

I had a feeling this would be the answer I'd get. My brother called me this morning wanting to know if he could do it this way. In the past, i've always read that dv-tapes were best for storage while DVDs are best for pure viewing. This is why i have all my tapes labeled meticulously! That way i can find what i need when i want to edit something together.
He didn't care about how many DVD's he would need to do it. He's loaded! What was most important was the organization part of it...being able to put videos into files and store them that way. Didn't sound like such a bad idea, so i thought i'd ask...
He really wants to be able to put his tapes away somewhere and convert everything he needs into digital format. It would be nice if there was some way to do that without losing quality. I give it a few more years... they'll come up with something!
    Thanks!

  • 24 bit 94khz DVD Possible in Compressor?

I want to create DVD's that are audio only at the best quality. I have some recordings that are 24bit, 94Khz sample size that I would like to keep it that way on DVD. Is this possible? If so, what settings in compressor?
    Message was edited by: recurly81

I've done this. But I didn't use compressor. I have recordings of the same resolution, and they are DVD-compiant AIFF files. So I just put them into DVD Studio Pro, and add a black frame for the video and stretch it out for the duration of the audio. You could also put in a slide with the track information.
Please note that these are DVDs. They are NOT DVD-Audio or Super Audio CDs. Those require different authoring software and specialized players. Although, some DVD players support DVD-Audio. But nothing could be simpler (or more easily played) than making DVDs with black video.

  • Change the sequence settings from NTSC 30 fps to PAL 25 fps, is possible?

    Hello,
I have a finished project that was make in a sequence with the format NTSC 30 fps. Now I need to change that sequence and the project to PAL 25 fps. I have changed the settings of the source secuence to PAL 25, but in the resulting sequence the audio and the videos are different in time and speed.
With the videos I have make a match frame to find the source, but with the audios I have problems. ¿There is a automatic proccess in final cut pro 7.0 that could make a translation of a finished sequence that was developed in NTSC 30 ftp to a PAL 25 fps?
Can you give me a tip or something to make the trasnlation ?
    Thanks in advance

Sorry...but it isn't as simple as changing a project frame rate. FCP is NOT good at mixing frame rates. And when you put NTSC footage (29.97fps), into a PAL timeline (25fps), that is exactly what you are doing. No, this won't work. No magic solution for this (although Avid MC5 does this nicely).
You are going to have to export a QT file, and let Compressor tackle this job (and it will take a WHILE, and you will have to run a few tests to see if your settings work to your satisfaction), or take that QT file to a post house with a Terranex or Snell/Wilcox to do the conversion ($$$$)...or output to tape AND THEN do the Terranex thing.
    No easy button here.

  • Using iDVD Is A Widescreen DVD Possible From Anamorphic DV ?

I have down-converted HDV to DV and edited it in Final Cut Express.
When burned in iDVD the video appears as a squashed 4:3 instead of 16:9.
I have been following these instructions to "trick" iDVD into making a widescreen movie but I can't get the new Scaled Size figures to stick.
+1. Open the exported file in the QT Pro player.+
    +2. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties (Cmd-J).+
+3. Select the Video Track and in the Visual Settings panel uncheck Preserve Aspect Ratio.+
+4. In the Scaled Size box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.+
Unfortunately, the moment I save the file, the new figure of 1024 pixels reverts to the original 720.
So is it possible to make a widescreen movie, and if so, how do I do it?
I can always do it in DVDSP but there are times when I would like to use iDVD.
Message was edited by: Ian R. Brown

    SUCCESS AT LAST !!!!!
In the instructions I was following there was one vital omission.
When you select "Video Track" it naturally turns blue.
However, when you alter the "Scaled Size", the "Video Track" turns grey.
If you try to save the new figures while the Video Track is grey, nothing happens.
What you must do is click on the Video Track to turn it blue before you save the new figures.
Also it helps if you select the "High Quality" box as well.

Hey fellows I am running the same thread in the compressor forum maybe somebody here has run into the same trouble before.
I'm trying to create a 24pDVD witch used to be easy with older versions of DVD SP.
Now it creates nasty tracks with roughly every 4th frame doubled!
There is a lenghty description of the problems involved with 23,976 content at
    http://homepage.mac.com/dvdsphelper/PDF/MPEG%20Telecine.pdf
The cool thing used to be that you did not have to jump through any hoops anymore with the combination of compressor and DVD SP
It seemes wer'e back to square 1 with DVD SP 4 and compressor 2

It may be worth getting the lend of an external drive to eliminate your hardware .. can you write DVD's data with any other software such as Toast or even using the OS to backup data to a DVD drive. How old are the blanks ..I once had a faulty batch of 100 a while back and it turned out they had been in the store for two years ..With that in mind try a new one not out of that batch .. All of this may be of no help but it is typical of the things I would try to attempt to narrow the field of suspects down a bit.

What baltwo wrote was "hdiutil has a segment option"
You want to man hdiutil and look at the hdiutil option, "segment"
I have Toast 6. Will that "span"?
I have no idea. Check the Toast help. I didn't think Toast 6 ran under Leopard.
I just noticed that you are running Tiger. This is the Leopard forum, so all bets are off.

  • Macbook Pro suddenly rejecting DVDs (possibly just dvd-/+r's)

    Hi,
I searched the forum for a solution to my problem and while it seems like many people are having similar problems, few have found a solution. My problem is very similar to the one posted here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1349476&tstart=0
Despite the question being labeled as answered, there was no answer to be found. Just a couple tried and failed ideas. So to inspire some new thought tailored to my problem I've decided to create this topic.
Ok so, down to business. I've never had any problems with my drive until today. When I put in a DVD (a dvd+r), it spun around in there trying to do something and then simply spit it back out. No error message, no nothing. Just spit it out in that obnoxious clicking way that MBPs spit things out. Perplexed after a few more attempts, I tried another DVD (a -r this time). Same result. Next, a Friends Season 3 DVD (straight from the manufacturer). Success. Next, a burnt CD-R. Success. Another two or three DVD-Rs. No dice. I haven't had a chance to try blank DVD-/+R's or CD-R's yet but I have a feeling the DVDs won't work. Again I've had no problems with the drive until now and it's not giving me any error messages.
    * Edit * It sounds like a LOT of people are having very similar issues but with many variations. Apple... What's goin on, man?? I hate to post a new topic for something that it sounds like many people are dealing with but, my problems is just slightly different from most of the ones I've read so I wasn't sure what to do. * Edit *
Despite my best efforts (modest compared to some, i'm sure), I can't figure it out. If anybody has any ideas they would be much appreciated.
Running 10.5.2 with all software and firmware updates (to my knowledge). I have the logs for them if anybody wants to check them out.

  • Premiere - screen flicker when burning to DVD but no other formats

In adobe premiere i can share a video to MPEG or some other format perfectly (and you tube) but when i burn the same project to DVD i get frame flicker especially on fast moving image

I have now amended the field settings of the affected clips and burned a new DVD with each option - one version with reversed field applied to all affected clips and another with de-interleaved box checked (but no reverse field). Both look fine on preview or MPEG output but both still 'stutter' on the DVD (possibly worse in the case of de-interleaved option)
I can also confirm for definite that is is only time-stretched clips that are suffering this problem on the DVD - the other clips are all perfect
my apologies for send ing the worng file infoi - please see below the mediainfo for the source file file from my camera and below that the AVI file

  • SD DVD at 24fps..?

I posted this in the 'Lounge' but was advised to move it here..
I have a film that is being edited  in PrPro CS4. I am building the edit at 24 fps (film). This film needs  to go out in many formats including full 2k projection, Blu-Ray discs  and NTSC DVD.
For  the NTSC DVD Encore locks in a 29.97 fps. Is it possible to create a 24  fps DVD using Encore..?

I believe this should help out. I am actually building the edit with raw frames from a compositing package and 3d software programs. This is an animated short film running about 12 minutes in length. The animation is built at film res (2048 x 1556) using a 185 common center frame chart. The end result will allow for me to adjust the size in my compositing package for HD,SD and depending on the film projector requirements a full resolution version and write the files as individual frames. (uncompressed in their proper resolutions)
It looks like once each file is brought back into Pr I will need to export them as .m2v files like you explain. This is where I believe I have my home work cut out for me. I will dive into your tutorials and get an idea of the workflow you talk about.
    I appreciate the help !!!

  • Do I need to change my captured 29.97 fps files to 23.98 fps?

Of the 290 AG-DVX100 24p clips I've captured to my hard drive for my first feature, about 50 or 60 of them have vid rates (at least according to the clip descriptions in the FCP browser window) of 29.97 fps. My other 230 - 240 clips are (again according to the browser) 23.98 fps. When I open any of the 29.97 fps mov master files in QuickTime and click on "Movie Info," QuickTime tells me the actual frame rates vary with the file, from, say, 24.45 fps to 23.39 fps to (sometimes) 29.98 fps, and so on.
When I drag any of these files to the viewer, they seem to play perfectly fine, though in the viewer everything plays back at 30 fps. In fact, even my 23.98 fps clips play in the viewer at 30 fps, which I can tell when I step through each frame with my arrow keys. Is this supposed to work this way?
Anyway, my real question is that my Easy Setup default sequence editing rate is 23.98 fps, so no matter which clip I use at which frame rate, once I drop it onto the timeline and start to work with it, it immediately works at that 23.98 fps rate, even if it is supposedly a 29.97 fps master file. I could use Cinema Tools to reverse telecine each of the 50 or 60 29.97 fps mov files to bring them into frame rate conformity with my other 23.98 fps stuff, but I don't want to do it if I don't have to. Is this step necessary?
I plan to create a 23.98 fps DVD and eventually upload to a reel of 35 mm film. Any light you can shed on this most bewildering subject would be most appreciated!

Sorry - I should specify that I shot my footage (at least most of it, if not all of it) on a DVX100A with the f6 setting so it's 24pa footage, not 24p. Sorry about that.
