You probably already tried resetting the SMC?
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

    Hal

Aha OK then, that should work fine.
The only snag might be, if your missing the original thermal sensor from the original 24" Hard Drive.
Then again, you should be able to use the one that came from the original 17" Hard Drive.

  • 24" iMac Can't Boot OS X Install Discs

I have a 24" iMac (A1225). I can boot to non-Apple discs (utilities, Windows) and I can even install Windows without any problems. I can't boot to any OS X Install disc however. I have the original 10.5 discs, they don't boot. I have a 10.7 disc that does the same. It starts to boot and makes encouraging noises for a bit but eventually both discs spin down with the Apple logo and the spinning circle which stops.
Just for shiggles I tried to boot a couple of custom OSx86 discs (10.6.3 and 10.6.6). They both booted to the installer. 10.6.3 started installing (crashed half-way) but started to boot from the HDD after I restarted it (it didn't go anywhere of course, just the Apple logo). 10.6.6 finished installing but wouldn't boot after it restarted.
It seems like there's a hardware issue but the fact that I can boot non-Apple discs and even install Windows without issue makes me doubt that. I have also cleared the PRAM (Option-Command-PR) and ran a quick test in AHT (D) without issues.
Any suggestions on what I can check next?

I can try it again but I think I've left it for more than 10 minutes Also, as I said, the spinner stops and the DVD spins down. Thanks for the reply!

  • Post overhaul kernel panic, A1225/EMC2211

    Hello!
Helping to overhaul my friend's 2008 Intel iMac A1225, due to apparent logic board failure (per indie repair shop). The shop also said the hard drive was failing.
So my friend, thinking it a worthy risk, bought a new hd and a used "working" logic board to replace the originals. (BTW, the optical drive and video card had been successfully replaced in the past).
I was not around to see "before" behavior, but he said the machine would not boot.
We managed to replace the logic board and the hard drive. At boot, using Snow Leopard boot DVD, we now get power chord, Apple logo, lots of reading sounds from the optical drive, animated "clock" graphic, a few minutes wait, and then the slow-draw gray screen of death and restart request. Same result booting with Shift key down.
Booting with command-v much the same, but leading to black command line screen of panic "log" (no initialized drive to write to as yet) that doesn't display the expected registers code, but is more blow-by-blow kernel events description, I suppose.
I shot the screens with my iPad (can post if needed) but items shown seem unhelpful. (What do I know?)
Starts with the lines being drawn in a small area at center of screen (if I'm quick I could snap a pic), then goes to full-screen listing, that starts with:
    npvhash=4095
    hi mem tramps at 0xffe00000
    PRE enabled
    64 bit mode enabled
    Darwin Kernel Version 9.2.1......
Etc., through other announcements that include what I suspect are expected hard drive access errors (it's factory, after all), and on, until a pause after:
    BSD root: disk1s3, major 14, minor 4
followed by more DVD reading, then a pause after:
Jan 1 07:03:46 localhost configd[41]: Error: No interface name AirPort_Brcm43xx
then 15 more lines, ending with:
    NVDANV50HAL loaded and registered.
    GFX0: family specific matching fails
    Previous Shutdown Cause: 3
    GFX0: family specific mathing fails
    yukon: Ethernet address 00: [etc.]
    AirPort_Brcm43xx: Ethernet address 00: [etc.]
and the last line is a non-flashing white cursor block. Nothing happens after that and I must use Restart button to shut 'er down.
We used the same 2 RAM DIMMs (he doesn't recall, but I guess they're 1Gb each. We're hoping it's a RAM fault, which would be cheap, but we ain't qualified to diagnose kernel panics! Can this "log" point us in the right direction if it doesn't list those registers but (perhaps) is stopping short?
Your knowledge is, as ever, invaluable to those of us endowed with curiosity and too much time on our hands.

    Hello, BDAqua:
Drive is new retail from iFixit, listed as compatible with all intel iMacs (except 21.5" and 27" models). Is Western Digital brand. So I'm assuming it is fully compatible.
Disc is original gray disc for this iMac. (10.5.2). Number on that is: 2Z691-6208-A
Last few boot attempts were from that DVD, when the retail Snow Leopard disc he wishes to use got the same kernel panic result.
Also installed new PRAM battery with this upgrade (seemed like a good idea), and after a few boots fails zapped the PRAM as well.
Hoping we didn't static-zap anything. Lots of board handling to move over sub-cards (audio card w/ports, comm card (wifi?) and small card I don't recognize.

  • How do I remove the stand from my 24' intel imac model ( A1225)

Hello, I am moving my imac 24' from Europe to the states in my baggage. The stand mustbe removed to fit it in. Some models allow a business card or credit card to insert in the lever of the stand and the back of the imac housing where the stand is attached to. Thus oin pulling the stand levekl down with the acard inserted you will see a few srerws to unscrew to removing the stand. This is not with this imac 24' intel model number (A1225)
Are there any tips or help that one knows to removing the stand?
    Thanks..

==> Removing the 2007 24" iMac aluminum stand
==> Removing a VESA mount and replacing the aluminum stand
I recently inherited a 2007 24" iMac that had been VESA mounted.  I searched all the online boards to figure out how to remove the VESA bracket and install the aluminum stand that I bought on Ebay.  Despite 6 years since the iMac was made, I really didn't feel the online posts gave a clear answer, so I felt compelled to give my input.
First, the 'latch' mechanism that locks and unlocks the stand/VESA mount is RIGHT next to the top of the slot -- it's about 1/16" into the casing and shaped like a shallow L-shaped ledge that extends most of the length of the slot.  Here's a very effective way to hit it:
    * uninstalling stand;  put the computer on a bed at the edge; push the stand downward, somewhat hard, then slip a business card into the top of the slot, slanted 45 degrees upward.  do not push the business card hard at all.  it will hit the ledge/lever quickly.  leave it there.  now, insert a drivers license or credit card ON TOP of the business card, so it hits same ledge/lever but with more strength.  push a bit and start wiggling the stand.  the latch will release and you can now push the stand down to lock in the extended position, then remove the screws, install the VESA
    * uninstalling VESA:  the stand mechanism is already in the LOCKED/out position.  I spent about an hour trying to get it to lock into the extended position.  wrong.  it's already extended.  once you remove the VESA, install your stand, then follow the above guidance to unlock that mechanism and get your computer back upright.
There are a lot of threads on this topic.  I hope this helps some.  My main insights are two;  1) the latch/ledge is very close to the top of the slot, and 2) that ledge can be caught fairly easily by pushing the stand down and using a flexible cardboard business card, then superimposing a harder plastic card on top while you wiggle the stand.

  • Whats the highest software an A1225 iMac can run?

I bought an older A1225 model iMac dual core intel and I was wondering if the computer can run the newest software that apple has released? If not, then what is the highest it can run?

The highest OS X that a Core Duo can run is Snow Leopard 10.6
An A1225 Core 2 Duo can run the current OS X, but you will want to max out the RAM.

Can this drive be installed in the iMac 2.6 Model A1225 computer?
Or is the iMac 2.6 limited to the amount of internal memory?
    Thank you.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, it should have been written as - Is the iMac 2.6 limited to the amount of hard drive capacity to less than 2T or can it be expanded to 3T?
I tried many sources but none was very clear about it. That's why I thought someone in the Apple community might have already increased their older iMac to 3T.

  • What optical drive would i get to replace in 2008 24" iMac?

I received a 2008 24" iMac as a gift. The optical drive is bad and I need to replace the 1TB hard drive.
My question is this: I have found many different optical drives out there for the iMac. Which one do I get for my iMac?
The info off the tag on the stand is following:
    Serial No. QP*****0KM
EMC No: 2211. Model No. A1225
    IC: 4324A-BRCM1022
    iMac24/3.06/2x2G/NVIDIA/1TB/M/K
We would like to get this computer running as soon as possible. Any help would be Awesome!
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the advice and sorry about the serial. Didn't think when I wrote my post.
If I really wanted to replace the internal drive, would this one work?

I have been working with and building PC's for about 20 years and have just started working on this iMac. I know the extent of getting into the case and I have to open it up to replace the hard drive anyway because it is also junk.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Yet another problematic iMac 24" - 3.06Ghz - Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS

My iMac 24" (Early 2008) - 3.06Ghz - Model A1225 with the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS card does not work properly.
I purchased my machine in September of 2008 and the issues began about four years later, in late sprin of 2012.
When the screen/display/video problems started, I got blue or pink screen startup failures, beachballing, crazy static lines through the screen, sometimes beeps or screen flickers. All of this started four years after buying it—and it is NOT unreasonable to expect a $3200 machine to last far more than four years.
When my machine stopped working I spent hours over doing diagnostics, reseating the RAM, a reinstall of the OS, all to no avail.
Digging for information on the Internet pointed to so very many other owners of this machine type having the same problem! But the cost to repair the card, as reported time time again, was close to $900. Angry and bitter, I boxed up my machine and started saving—and went back to using my 20” white G5 iMac (no problems with this machine, thank heavens!).
Is there any recall movement in effect? I don’t want to have to pay 900 or so dollars to repair a video card that is inherently defective!
Nvidia recently admitted to having produced lots of faulty Geforce cards for their laptops but also stated that there could be other products with similar faults (http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1045810/000119312508145974/d8k.htm). They have set aside about $150 million to redress the matter.
There is a UK forum dedicated to helping laptop owners with problematic Nvidia cards get help and they have started fielding quesitons from iMac owners, as well (
    http://www.nvidiadefect.com/apple-imac-24-early-2008-imac8-1-defect-geforce-8800 -gs-t3813.html).
Is anyone else an unhappy owner of an early iMac 24" (Early 2008) - 3.06Ghz - Model A1225 with the Nvidia Geforce 8800 GS?

After a lengthy long-distance call to Apple Tech Support, both agents I spoke to told me that this is the first time they have heard about this issue. There are no repair protocols in place for this make and model of iMac with these issues.
I asked the senior of the two again, just to clarify, if this was the first time he heard about such a problem and he said yes. I then asked him if he knew the subject was being discussed here on the Apple Support Communities forum and he said that this forum is for users and is not used by them. I asked him if he thought it would make sense for Apple Techs to be up to date about common repair issues being discussed on Apple's own forums, and he said that he can't speak for Apple. I then asked him his opinion about the matter and he said, "I suppose so."
The "suppose so" line told that that I would get nowhere with him. I just hope the authorized repair center I visit is more up to date about this problematic iMac build that Apple's own Tech Support staff are.
    Shame on you, Apple!
