24" iMac and 2 GB RAM won't boot

My new 24" iMac will no longer start up with the 2 GB of Apple RAM installed(2 x 1GB DIMMs). The Power light indicater on the front comes on, but the computer doesn't actualy start or boot up.
I tried removing one of the 1GB DIMMs and the machine boots up fine with just the 1 GB of RAM installed. Doesn't matter which stick or bank i try, as long as it's only 1 GB, the computer starts up fine. Any idea what's causing this and how it can be fixed?
This problem started today when i tried to start up the machine after it had been shut down and unplugged for 1 week while i was on vacation. Prior to this, the machine ran flawlessly on 2 GB of RAM.
Any ideas?
Greg

Aloha and Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try resetting the PRAM:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Mahalo for the welcome and the advice. I'm now able to boot with the 2 DIMMs installed after resetting PRAM. But, the computer is only showing 1 GB installed instead of 2 GB. Tried running Hardware Test off the CD. It shows only 1 GB RAM, and it and logic board functioning properly.
Any other ideas. Tried calling support, but it's after office hours?

  • How do I determine if the memory problems are with my imac and not the RAM?

I've heard of some vague problems with intel imacs and their memory slots. I'm about to replace (for the 3rd time) RAM, and think I need to test further to see if the problem is with my imac and not the RAM. Right now I put back in the original 2-512 sticks that came with the imac, and the rember test is only showing 594mb (odd amt!) testing OK. But, in "about my mac" it will show as 1gb.
Problems I've had with each set of RAM: occasional KP's, excessive spinning beachballs, sudden closing of apps (esp. if I have several apps running), won't fax usually (will hear a fax tone instead of a dial tone at the onset), disappearing documents section under my username.
I bought this imac refurbed thru the apple store last fall: 2.16 C2D 20" imac
Any ideas before I have to separate myself from my imac to send it in??

    Hi Toodles
The pin strips on the new modules maybe a little thicker than your original modules, and it's going to take more force to seat them properly. If the new Memory Specifications are correct I would try them again. Slide them in untill they stop, then push real hard untill you feel them seat into place.
I've never seen a report about an odd amount of ram shown. If reinstalling the ram modules does not solve your issue, and may be a indication that there is something wrong with one of the slots.

I have in stalled maverick on my iMac and now my contacts won't stay open..... any fixes?

Try restarting first. This fixes a lot of issues after installing Mavericks.
If you have an iCloud account, you might want to uncheck Contacts in System Preferences > iCloud. Does contacts open now? If it's Gmail, Yahoo or other account that syncs contacts, uncheck in System Preferences > Internet Accounts.

  • Imac 350Mhz G3 Slot loading-Won't boot from cd's

    So here's what's going on
So, I found this imac awhile back. (somebody was throwing it out)
    http://www.apple-history.com/?page=gallery&model=imacslot
I plugged it in today(it uses the same cable as my summer 2000 indigo imac) and i turned it on, it make 3 angry sounding clicking noises.
Then it started up, and the hard drive is kinda...old sounding.
It came up with this gray box with a globe(the earth) in it ( I know this has something to do with os X) and then after flashing that for about a minute, it went to the os 9 flasing folder with the question mark and the mac face and then the question mark, and then the mac face etc.
I fixed that by resetting pram. But now it comes up with a flashing question mark folder ala-os 9 problems.
The thing is, it won't start up from ANY disks I put in it. It sounds like it's starting to spin it up, the flashing folder will pause, as if it was going to go away and then boot up from the disk, and then it just doesn't.
Also, I've tried booting from a disc by putting it in and holding down alt, which as you know allows you to choose a boot disc. It has the same result, of note though is that it doesn't show a hard drive as an option to boot from, just the disc I put in.
I've tired the disk warrior bootable disc, and the pro tools bootable disc. Neither works.
I've currently opened it up and taken out the hard drive and cd-rom drive. Pressed what I now know is the CUDA button, but never held it down for 5 seconds like I've read you're supposed to do.
I'd really love to get ahold of the orginal software install and restore discs that came with this imac. Does apple sell them or give them out?

When I'm workin on an Imac, I generally plug the mains cable back in after I've removed the case. (but turned off at the wall!)
American and Japanese power outlets do not have a switch at the wall. American power strips tend to have a switch, but there is no guarentee that the switch is on the 'live' side of the circuit. (Only with the ANSI standard requiring asymmetric plugs in the 1990s in effect has that issue been addressed). Many properties remain unearthed and/or poorly earthed and/or have those three-prong to two-prong converters in service. There are many homes here still wired with "legacy" wiring that are cloth insulated, or are part of the old DC circuits converted for AC use, especially in Northeastern U.S. where Edison was dominant (as opposed to the Midwest, where Westinghouse was dominant).
Unfortunately, BS 1383A isn't applicable here. Fortunately, 115V is usually not potent enough to kill.

  • M'y iMac 27 inch (end 2009) won't boot with a IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1504 error , after a graphic crash

Hello everybody. First i'm french and my english is so bad, excuse me for my language !
Ok i've got a iMac 27" buy in the end of 2009, with ATI Radeon HD 4850. I'm photographer and i use this mac for Lightroom and Photoshop first. I never have any problem with this mac but last week, during my work, my screen freeze. I restart with force the machine, and after the logo apple, many strange pixel and vertical straigt white and grey. You can look a capture at this link (https://www.dropbox.com/s/g45a6act347j7u0/photo2.JPG).
So i restart my mac and i try all solution and the boot : C touch, D, Option, NVRAM, verbose, single ... always freeze with the strang pixel. The only way who work is the Shift touch : Mac OS X Mountain Lion started but so slowly and with graphic acceleration problem, no video youtube, no flash on the web.
So i did my backup with tome machine and i wanted to reinstall the OS ... but the Option touch at start up don't work ... i try the cmd+R command and it work !!! Mac OS Mountain Lion downloaded, installed and my iMac work !!!!! Yeahhhhhh ! Everything works .... one day !!!! On my facebook page, the bug come back, screen freeze. I sream a lot, and i restart by force the iMac and now, the big problem ...
Everytime i restart my iMac, when the apple appears ... some line of code appears and talk about kernel and driver. I take a photo of this message at this link : https://www.dropbox.com/s/mfbb5q5p93neirt/photo1.JPG
I tried everything i know and every couple of touch at startup : C, D, cmd + R, cmd+option+R+P, option, T, S ... i'm lost in this problem, i can't reinstall the OS like the first bug, i can't enter in the single mode, i can't boot on a usb key or a Dvd, i can't use the target mode in order to repair or format the hdd ... I am in the world of apple since 9 year, and it's the first time i have got a problem with the apple device.
After reading and search on french discussions, some guys say to me that it's maybe a graphic card problem, or a RAM problem .... i don't want to bring my mac in a store cause i don't have enough money .... i am freeze, like my iMac, and i can't work the wedding photo !!!!
Maybe someone can help me ? And please, use an english very easy for me, i don't speak english since the school !!!!
    Thank you evertbody.
    Sebastien, Toulon, France.

So, some news ! I finally format the HD by the disk target mode with an other iMac. After formating, booting from a USB key to install Mac OS X Mountain Lion: Install Mac OS X Lion Mountain successful the computer starts correctly , without display bug , no lag , no loss of fluidity ... In short, I think I have solved the problem. But after a few minutes of use , the screen is frozen , the machine is blocked , the computer no longer met again. And after a forced reboot , I end up with the same lock screen with colored pixels and vertical lines (photo this screen: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7qvv8fobjpstf8t/ecran_complet.JPG , photo zoom here : https://www.dropbox.com/s/wyvsoog79jkg8fq/zoom_ecran_complet.JPG).
After going through some forums , it seems that this is my ATI Radeon HD 4850 that is failing. Is it your diagnosis? What will be the budget required to repair an Apple Store? Can I expect Apple a gesture of goodwill (purchase or repair) , knowing that my iMac is covered by any warranty ?
Cordially, thanks a lot for your answer, maybe one !!!!
    Sébastien

  • Even with a new hard drive and fresh install, it won't boot

Here's my story. On Wednesday last week, we had a power outage. (Yes, I had a surge protector. It didn't matter.) The next morning, when I turned my iMac on, it wouldn't boot. It got to the startup icon, but it just spun forever. I restarted and ran fsck, and it gave me a bunch of invalid sibling link errors. I used my Mac Mini to look at the hard drive in Target Disk mode and got the same result. I also tried using Disk Warrior, which hung a couple times before rebuilding the directory, but that didn't help. I took the iMac into the Apple Store, where a Genius checked it out, reset the PRAM, and then got a kernel panic. He told me I'd have to "erase and install," which I did (I had most of my important stuff backed up, but still lost some data, unfortunately.) I rebooted with the Apple install CD and reinstalled the OS. Then I rebooted into the clean install. The machine was extremely slow and took forever to get to the desktop. Then it hung with the spinning beach ball when I tried opening the Applications folder. A couple more pokes around the desktop eventually produced another kernel panic.
Yesterday, we got the hard drive replaced. I just finished reinstallation the OS, and guess what? It still won't boot. I get the Apple icon after the start up chime, then we get a blue screen that's quickly replaced with a gray screen. Then a black screen, then a gray screen again. This repeats forever with an occasional spinning beach ball until I restart.
I should note that I can boot into single-user mode and run fsck, and it reports no problems. I'm running DiskWarrior now for lack of any other ideas, and while it booted into the CD, it took forever to do so. I'm completely out of ideas, so other than throwing this machine in the trash and buying a new one, is there anything else I can try to diagnose the problem? Please note I was able to boot into a CD and reinstall the OS twice so far, so it still seems to be functioning to some extent.
    Any ideas?

Did you format the new drive, if not it has to be formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before the OS can be installed. Here is a simple how-to guide:

  • Macbook Pro: OSX and BootCamp Win 7 won't boot

Hi, I'm having a series of related issues.  I've got a macbook pro 5.2 (17", about 2 years old) with snow leopard installed, bootcamped with win 7.
Background: I was logged into Windows playing a game.  System hard locked so I powered down. When I power back on, I get this message:
    File: \Boot\Bcd
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
So, I power down to boot into OSX to see what's up.  This time, I get to the grey load screen and it just sits there and OSX doesn't load. I waited several minutes and nothing happened.  It wasn't locked (the progress wheel was spinning the whole time).  So, I power down, reboot trying safe mode.  It starts booting with the progress bar, but again it never loads.
So, I'm not at this point: I'm able to boot into the OSX installer from the DVD.  In the disk utility, at first my mac partition shows and my bootcamp partition does not, though when I run a verification, the bootcamp partition does eventually show up.  I tried running repair on it, but I get the error that the Mac parition cannot be unmounted (I'm booted from the DVD when this happens).  I haven't run verify on the mac volume only as it estimates 10 hours (trying it now), but I did run verify on the drive and it passed.  I just can't run a repair.
On the Windows side, when I boot from the install disc, it boots into the installer but it can't see an operating system installed when I try to use the repair feature there.  Suggests I get drivers for the hard drive, but I have no idea what drivers I need for that.
I have no other mac to run in target disk mode from.  I have an OSX installation on a firewire drive that I can boot into, but I can't get that to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard.  I have recent important files on both drives that I would really like to retrieve that aren't backed up.  Most topics I see regarding these issues seem to be regarding external storage disks, or for people already looking to do a fresh install.  I won't say that reformatting and reinstalling aren't an option, but if someone knows a way to get those files off first, I'd appreciate that.

*Take an iMac and Windows 7 Blue screen fun*
the final part of the Win 7 install and Mr Blue screen due to the Nividia driver supplied on Win 7 DVD kills iMac GT7300
    1. Install... and Blue screen!
2.Re-boot but from the Win 7 install disk – seems to work if you hold alt on boot up and select the disk to boot from!
3.When you get into the Windows installer, click past the language selection. Then click "Repair your computer".
4.Windows will scan for installations and prompt you with a list. Select your "C" drive and click Next.
5.You should be presented with a windows titled *System Recovery Options*.
At the bottom of this list you should see +Command Prompt+.
    Select the command prompt.
6.When the console opens, you can delete the offending driver using the following command:
    DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\NVLDDMKM.SYS
7.Close the command prompt window and click the Restart button.
This time, boot from your hard disk.
You will complete the install with no Blue screen.
Having done this go to the Nivida web site and download the GT 7 series drivers for Windows 7.
    Install, re-boot and ...
+*... install Bootcamp drivers and right off your back to Blue Screen...*+
Repeat 1-7 and install newly downloaded drivers and off you go

  • Upgraded my macbook pro's iDVD, iPhoto, and iMovie today. iMovie won't boot

Been working in iMovie 09 for 6 months with no problem. Decided to update the iLife package and qt today. Now iMovie won't boot.
    Any help?

    Dear IPeter,
My problem is similar. I can accept the 2 app, but the acceptation message is staying. If I try to accept again I get the message, that the apps were already accepted and in my purchases map. Which is the case. Problem on Imac 2013 and Yosemite.

  • After attempting secure erase, iMac w/homemade fusion drive won't boot from *anything*

2009 iMac with homemade fusion drive (SSD installed in optical bay).  Was working fine with Yosemite until I attempted to secure erase it before giving away the machine.
Now the drive is borked.  Disk utility could make no sense of it, can't reformat, it can't repartition it.  And now it has completely stopped booting.  I cannot even get it to boot of an external USB drive anymore (the original operation was performed while booted from a Yosemite installer drive on a USB stick).
I've reset the PRAM, reset the SMC, and just nothing.  All boots are attempted from internal messed up fusion drive, which eventually ends in the "prohibitory sign".
I'm not even sure what to try at this point.  Any suggestions out there?

Thank you for the reply.  I have since resolved the problem, although not in the most satisfactory way.
    Here's what I did:
Pulled both drives out of the iMac, put them into a USB dock, and reformatted each one.  Both drives appeared at this point to be fine.
Reinstalled both drive into the iMac, and started up from a USB drive.  No problem.
Recreated the fusion drive from the terminal.  No problem.
Now, because I am a glutton for punishment, I tried wiping the fusion drive again.  This time, part way in, it kernel panicked.  Luckily, I was able to reboot once again to the external drive.
At this point, the fusion drive was in the exact same messed up state as when I started.  Disk Utility app could do nothing with it.
Fortunately, this time I went right to the command line, and was able to fix things up and recreate the fusion drive before anything else bad happened.
I gave up on wiping the drive for now.  If I need to do so in the future, I will disable the fusion drive and try to wipe each physical drive separately.
I should note that this iMac has never given a spot of trouble before now, so I am highly suspicious of the way disk utility tries to wipe a fusion drive.  I certainly won't try it again.  (I don't know if it has ever kernel-panicked before in the 5 years I've owned it).

  • IMac will turn on, but won't boot unless I wait until the next day

I've searched this forum, but can't seem to pinpoint my problem. I received this iMac for my office last March, and everything worked just fine. Lately, for the past 3-4 months, I can turn it on in the morning and everything runs fine.
I turn it off in the middle of the workday, thinking I won't need to use it for the rest of the day.
Of course, something comes up, and I need to turn it back on. When I press the button to turn it back on, nothing happens. Just a black screen and if it's quiet enough, I can hear the hard drive running.
It won't boot until I come back the next morning, almost as if I'm giving it time to cool off.
    Any ideas?

Turn off Energy Saver and use Screen Saver instead. Energy Saver is sensitive to certain non-Apple USB devices and may cause such a problem.

  • IMac g5 (isight) 20 inch won't boot up from harddrive or cd

Hey! I am going to make this all very clear and explain everything to the best of my ability (this might be long).
My friend gave me this iMac g5 with the built in iSight. The computer was not functioning properly, so I decided to see if I could find some help fixing it.
Basically, like many others, my computer is stuck on the grey loading screen, and I can't figure out what operating system it is running because of this. I asked my friend what OS it was running and he said he didn't know. I have tried EVERYTHING to fix it. Here's a list:
Pressed Option key at start (nothing happened)
Pressed C key at start with Disk Warrior in the cd drive (won't boot from cd)
Pressed C key with Tiger OSX in cd drive (won't boot from cd)
Reset the PRAM to no avail
Reset the SMU to no avail
Infact, the only thing that seems to work is COMMANDOPTION+OF ...and I don't know what to do when i get to that screen...i've been using it to eject cd's from the imac...thats about all i know.
PLEASE HELP! I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO!

    Thankyou for your response!
Unfortunately, I have been to that support page. I cannot even get into disk utility, let alone the mac osx software.
is there anything else i can try? maybe something in open firmware since its the boot key that works

  • Bios updated and now K8N Neo won't boot? FIXED!

Successfully restored from backup (after some hassles!), but thanks to everyone who helped.
Having messed with the bios some more, I *think* I now know what the problem was.  And *blush*, I think it was my fault all along *blush*.
I think I had one of the drives selected at the top in Hard Disk Boot sequence, instead of the SCSI - Raid Array.
That would mean it was only reading half the MBR at boot time which would kindof explain the problems I was having.
Still, we live and learn.  Thank God for backups!
    Cheers all
    Chippy
I hope someone can please help me?
I just upgraded my K8N Neo2 bios from 1.4b to Easybios 1.3c (or whatever its called).
I took all the proper precautions and the bios update itself has worked just fine. My system is "working" OK.
However, I can't boot. The system POSTs fine, detects the raid0 array just fine and then falls over with an MBR 1 error and an MBR 3 error.
I booted from the XP install CD and loaded up recovery console, and I can log on to the array. The array and all data is fine.
So it looks like its just the MBR record that is screwed. Is this because of some incompatibiliy between my old and new bios?
And anyway, please does anyone know how to fix it? I suppose I can try to rebuild the MBR somehow, but I don't know how. And I really DO NOT want to risk losing all of the data on the array. Yes, I have a full back up, but I don't want to end up having to rely on it!
Has anyone seen this problem before when doing a bios update? And any ideas how to fix it?
(I guess I could flash back to 1.4b, but I really would like a later bios version to go with my new - as yet untested - Opty 146).
    Thanks

Thanks for the tip, Doc.  But I have entered the bios settings from scratch.
I can try it again, but why do you think that might work?  There really aren't two many sata and raid settings to make - all you have to do is enable the two channels (sata3 and sata3) and then enable them also in the raid menu.  That's it.  And the board "sees" the raid array just fine, its just it won't boot anymore.  I can read and write to the array no problem from Windows Recovery Console, so I conclude that the hardware is all working properly.  I think its an MBR incompatibility issue between the two bios versions... or maybe MBR corruption.
I seem to remember some people having problems with this a year or so ago when upgrade this bios from 1.4 to 1.5.  Some people were having to do complete Windows reinstalls to fix it.  That was why I didn't update my bios sooner.
But I asked around this time and it seemed those problems had been resolved.
    Seems I was mistaken!
    Any other thoughts / suggestions?
    Thanks
    Chip
