24" imac arrived today

Now, I have to get back to fooling with this thing

The good thing is that the fooling around period is very short. If it would have been a windoze box, you would be fooling around with it for a couple of days and still may not have it up and running

  • New iMac arrived today, but before I get it up and running...

New iMac: 21.5" iMac: OS X Snow Leopard; 3.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 8 GB RAM; and 2TB Serial ATA Drive.
I will be calling AppleCare and have them walk me thru various steps to get the new machine going. One of the things I'll want to do is bring files and applications from my "old" iMac onto the new one. But....
My present (old) iMac has been running very slowing for a couple of months, at least. By that I mean internet usage. Programs don't seem to be a problem. Don't know if it's the browser or what. (Using FireFox 2.0 mostly. Takes forever to load a page.) Wondering if it's possible I have a virus. Thought that wasn't a problem for Macs, but it does, apparently happen.
If that would be the case, could I corrupt my new iMac by bringing in files and/or applications from a possibly infected machine? Or, do viruses mainly affect the System folder and things like that. (I intend to bring in tunes from iTunes, music from GarageBand 2 and Band-in-a-Box, photos, and documents).
Another quickie, albeit possibly dumb: how do you insert a CD/DVD into this new iMac? Little book that came with it doesn't tell; machine itself gives no indication. So, should the label side of CD/DVD face me (as I'm looking at the screen), or should it face the wall behind the computer?
Anticipating more questions until I get everything squared away.
    Thanks

    HI,
My present (old) iMac has been running very slowing for a couple of months, at least.
Make sure there is enough free disk space. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
do viruses mainly affect the System folder and things like that.
There are no Mac viruses in the wild. And.. read here regarding anti virus and malware protection in Snow Leopard. http://www.apple.com/macosx/security/
(I intend to bring in tunes from iTunes, music from GarageBand 2 and Band-in-a-Box, photos, and documents).
If you install and 3rd party software such as Band-in-a-Box, check the vendor site to make sure it is compatible with Snow Leopard 10.6. Also, if you want to connect peripherals such as printers/scanners/copiers/cameras/external drives. Check those vendor sites to make sure the software/hardware is compatible with 10.6
You may have applications that run on a PowerPC that won't run on an Intel based iMac. You can
install Rosetta from the install disc that comes with your iMac in order to run those apps. Read here.
If you need to install Rosetta

Hey there! So, I already contacted Mac App Store support several times, the response:
    - "Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.
Thank you for your patience. Apple wants your iTunes experience to be as enjoyable as possible"
I answered I really needed it, and if they knew the estimated time it would take to solve the issue. Here's the last response.
    - "According to your previous correspondence, you have not been able to install iLife after reinstalling OS X Lion. I understand that this issue is under investigation, and that you would like to know the amount of time needed to find a resolution. As a fellow iTunes customer, I certainly understand that you need to use iPhoto for professional reasons, and I'll gladly help you to resolve this problem.
Unfortunately, I am unable to give you the exact amount of time this issue could take. I do assure you that our engineers are currently working towards a resolution. "
I'm going to an Apple Sotre Genius today, in 2 hours. I'll keep updated!!

  • Mac Pro due to arrive today- send it back?

A few weeks ago- I was reading great praise for the latest Mac Pro and the 8800 card.
I have been using a PowerPC Quad for the last 2 1/2 years- so I figure now is a good time to upgrade to an intel machine.
    I bought the MacPro 3.0
    1TB Boot drive
    8800 card
    It's due to arrive today.
Last night I start reading some posts- looking for any "heads up" issues- and suddenly there seems to be many issues.
sleep- reboot, crashes, kernal panics, and a benchmark that claims the 8800 card is slower than the stock card.
    I don't have a good feeling.
Is all this reason to send it back?
Do all current Mac Pros suffer these issues?
I run FCS2. Shoot and Edit video for a modest living.
My Quad is solid. But it's getting to be outdated with some of the latest HD codes. (I can't use it with the Sony HD cam without a major workaround.)
Is it safe to assume that all the issues can be fixed by firmware updates?

I've had the 2.8 early 08 MP since the day after it was announced. I cross-graded from a 8-core 3.0 primarily to get the latest thing, faster RAM [i replaced all the RAM from my old machine with 800MHz sticks] and the 8800GT card (which I just added yesterday via Apple's kit).
I have had no problems at all with it except for the reboot on sleep which went away with a PRAM reset. It's been very stable.
10.5.1 and 2 also brought a number of bug fixes. The system is certainly very stable now.
I am disappointed by the 8800's scores being no higher in Motion (on a RAM preview) than the 1900XT or even in many cases the stock 2600c card. However:
    - the 8800GT is much faster than the stock card when performing real-time rendering such as playing through your timeline and not rendering to RAM, at least 2X faster for me on my current project
    - the 8800GT is much smoother in general UI use, such as loading large stacks of icons from the dock
    - the 8800GT destroys the 2600 and handily beats the X1900 as well in gaming, especially under Windows (Boot Camp.)
So to say the 8800GT is a waste of money is kind of silly if you are interested in any of these things. If you only do Motion RAM previews, the stock card at this juncture seems fine.
I'd think refusing your computer is silly at this point unless you really don't want it.

  • I7 iMac Arrives With Cracked Glass. Apple Customer Service Acts Suspect.

So the i7 iMac arrives. Excited and scared — because I've heard all the stories about "bad iMacs" being delivered. I unpack it and place it on the top to admire it's girth and beauty. It truly is glorious! I remove the static sleeve and begin to remove the plastic cover. That's when I noticed it. A crack in the glass. Like everyone reports. Bottom left corner. About 1" long and 1/4" wide. It's as if something applied pressure in a weak spot during production and packaging. I checked the foam sleeve to see where it falls. The crack is covered by the foam so it has to be in production.
So I call Apple Customer Support and explain. Long story short, I took the option to have the glass replaced at an Apple Store rather than exchange it for a new one and gamble the same outcome. I explained what it looked like and what I've read. I also described the box condition — perfect, no damage. The ACS rep said, "Wow. I'm sorry to hear that. I have not heard about this." Then he began to question me on how I unpacked the iMac. Followed by a question as to if I had accidentally banged in on a table corner. I understand they must ask these questions however, I was becoming a little upset at the implications.
After being put on hold three times, he finally stated that I could take it to an Apple Store for a repair or ship it back for replacement. I chose repair. Replacement is to much of a gamble.
I've posted a photo of the crack for people to compare — and any Apple monitors of this board — to see what's going on.

There is another thread in here where the poster says he lay the box on its side on his desk and carefully slid the iMac out of the box. Unfortunately whilst doing this, the styrofoam slipped from the iMac and the iMac fell 2 inches onto the desk.
His iMac had a crack in the glass. Was this caused by the drop onto the desk or prior to being packed? No one can say for sure. His box was undamaged too.
I opened mine vertically and a friend and I lifted the iMac carefully out of the box supporting the iMac's full weight, then carefully placed it upright onto a desk and finally removed the ultra sticky plastic film (very slowly).
iMac i5 - no cracked glass.
Fortunately for the other poster, Apple agreed to replace the item.
I'm happy that you're getting your iMac sorted out, but to other readers thinking of buying or unpacking their new iMac's, remove them from the box in a vertical position, supporting the rear and base of the iMac (hands nowhere near the glass). Better safe than sorry.
If the glass is cracked you can then tell Apple it was unpacked, by 2 people, from the box in a vertical position. This may allow Apple to remove unpacking as a potential cause of the cracks some people are experiencing and narrow down the quality issue (if there is a quality issue - I'm not accusing anyone honest, so don't have a go - just covering all bases)

  • I can sign in to AppleSupport on my iMac, but today I cannot sign in via iPad

I have been using both iMac and iPad to access Apple Support... but today I couldn't sign in with either.
I finally changed password and now I can sign in using my iMac, but when I try to sign in with iPad, I get message
"we do not recognize an account by that name"  What happened???
    how do I fix it??
    Thanks

I have the same problem, migration worked - i have my pdf documents but no books?  clicking ibookstore mentions that the app can't connect to the store.
Have you tried the steps on this thread, they didn't work for me?

  • Mac Pro arriving today!

There is SO much info here that it's hard to find all help that I may need. Am I even posting in the right forum?!
So, any help with what I may run into would be MOST appreciated!
I just read that Tiger has a small app in Utilities called Migration that may help move files and apps over to the new machine...does it take ALL the files (hidden ones, too)? Like including the payed versions of Roxio's Toast Titainium? (I can't find where my product key is!)
I am MOST concerned that my version of Photoshop (7) won't work on the Mac Pro_but have been told that it will run fine, (via Rosetta?) is this true?
So, as you can see, I will be grateful for ALL comments!
    Thank you...

iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9) Soon: Mac Pro Quad 2.66GHz 250 HD 2GB RAM 20" Apple Cinema Display
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

All the advice I got prior to the arrival of my Mac Pro was to wipe the hard drive clean and start fresh with a new install. I was so antsy tho' I didn't want to wait and since I was transferring from one Intel system to another I figured if it didn't work, I'd wipe it clean and reinstall and then install the programs anew.
But it worked just fine. About a week later I was putting the Mac Pro box away, taking the items out of it for storage, when I realized Apple had not included any OSX disks at all. The machine was already preconfigured but still, I would need those disks should anything ever go wrong (of if I just wanted to boot from Disk 1 and use the utilities).
So I called and asked that the disks be mailed. The disks they sent were identified as "replacement" disks, not original OSX disks. It doesn't matter, of course, because they do the same thing but I wondered how a newbie might feel or do in such a situation.
So make sure your OSX disks are in the box, just in case. BTW, I've never had another reason to wipe out a hard disk and start anew. OSX just runs well for me. Every now and then I'll install a program that won't feel or sit right and when I verify the hard disk it will tell me to boot from Disk 1 and use the disk utility to correct the error.
As for the Office Demo ... when I bought the Mac Pro they offered me the option of throwing in a free (Canon, I think) color printer but I already had a fine HP Color Laserjet so I asked for (and got) Office for the Mac. So I never did see the Office demo product, the full version must have overwritten it.
But if you want to remove it without any residual files I suppose you could use something like AppZapper (which has a trial version that will allow you to zap three or five programs).

  • Wish me luck... iMac arrives tomorrow

I have been around here off and on for some time... mainly checking things out and building my confidence to make the switch. I have built my last five PC's and have been borderline extreme with these... even had a watercooled system.
So today I ordered an 20in iMac 2.66 / ordered 4Gig RAM from OWC / and will order VMWare Fusion tonight since I have a couple of PC based programs that do not have Mac alternatives. I haven't decided whether I will load XP or Vista since I have license and CD for both.
Any comments or suggestions from you converts or long time Mac experts?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    Ronnie

While I won't say I'm a pro I did make the move about 8 months ago from a PC to Mac using a similiar configuration. First I think your choice of upgrading memory is smart and will only enhance the performance. I run XP using Fusion and have found it more than adequate for my occasional Windows use. From what I have seen most get better performance out of XP primarily because Vista is so much more dependent on hardware and tends to hog more of it just to run.
About the only suggestion I have to follow the directions you get from the manufacturer and take your time. Experience tells me usually when people have problems it is simply because they cannot or will not follow directions. My system has been super stable and runs lock a clock.
Have fun with your new machine.

  • 20' iMac ordered today!

I finally made this famous SWITCH!
After asking for some convincing on this forum few days ago, I was more than happy with your comments and I ordered the iMac this morning.
I took the 20' iMac with 1.5Gb RAM and a 500GB HDD. This should be good for few years! Well I hope so...
Another good thing is shipping times. I had a look yesterday for the delay and it was 5-7 weeks. This morning it was 7-10 days!!! I hope it's not a mistake and I guess the guys in China are all on extra strong coffee!

Congratulations, it is truly an excellent machine. I was this way a little less than a year ago and it was one of my better decissions to switch to apple. The iMac has given me no trouble what so ever, solid machine. As far as the ship dates, yeah there always overstated.. I think they were real high since the new release of the rev c's but now the products are flowing in the marketplace, and the supply of them is running high. Again congratulations on your purchase, and if you have any trouble with it, post here in apple discussions and im sure you will be taken care of!

  • 2.8 GHz Intel iMac arrived OK and its absolutely gorgeous !

Picked up by FedEx in Shanghai, China early on August 13th and delivered to Ontario Canada by lunch time on the 15th ! And its absolutely gorgeous. Glare is not an issue. The absence of the Apple on the Command key is not an issue. The mighty mouse being WHITE is not an issue. Getting my wife off it MAY be an issue.

    are these new imacs fast?
im trying to compare this new 24 inch ( 2.8 GHZ) beast with all the RAM in it to a G5 desktop quad or DP 2.5 all with plenty of RAM.
Does the new IMAC speed through Garageband ( 20 tracks of data ) or Photoshop CS3 with 50 MB files?
is it a new beast to contend with or just a little prettier and more featured? or is this now a computer that will tolerate lots of data without slowing down or choking on big size files?
I would love a mobile ( in the car out of the car perse ) unit that will step up to the task.
anyone who has pushed it pretty far would appreciate any responses.....

We need another forum for the Intel iMac. I got the 20 inch with 256 mb vram.

  • I want to order an iMac 27" today, but...

Does the version available today (and I'm looking to upgrade/customise) come with the retina display or ar Apple trying to get rid of old stock at the same price?

Now that I am a wiser man, I have just placed my order for a 27" with 1TB Fusion, uprated to i7 and some other bits... excited now as this is my first Apple desktop purchase, other than my ipod, ipad and iphone....
    Roll on January   And thanks

  • NEW N900 arrived today. Unsure about some things d...

I received my NEW N900 today. However I'm unssure about a few things I've done & whether they will have caused a problem or not. The phone is sim free unlocked & accepted my 02 payg sim. The first things done were to use the bluetooth 5800 switcher application to send my  contacts, notes, calendar entries to the N900.
The original factory install version was according to this latest log string.
SW version: 2.2009.51.1_18:00:39.610 ENO SW version: RX-51_2009SE_2.2009.51-1_PR_MR0 18:00:39.610.
I used the latest OVI Suite to update my phone. The very first time I connected my phone to OVI Suite was to do a backup of original firmware. OVI installed the latest Nokia firmware  which is showing up now as version 20.2010.36-2 on N900. So I am presuming the first version was 2.2009.51-1.
But While the Nokia N900 was updating I went to have dinner & I must have not followed any prompts at some point because I came back their was a red exclamation mark & Nokia said their was a timout & phone was disconnected firmware update was done but I had to plug phone reconnect it & do restore restore some other data inc contacts & something.
But after checking my phone everything that was their in the first place was still there. So their was only one difference I noticed. The applications & games that were preloaded were not in a More shortcut at the bottom of the menu but all in the main menu.  I don't think anything is different.
Some of my questions are: Should I have installed the latest nokia firmware or is there a meamo firmware update which I should of done which would be better.
I found out that I can't add more than one packet data connection only wireless under settings. But now Internet aswell as making/receiving calls & SMS messages is good to go. I'm happy their. Also GPS seems to work without the need to setup a data packet connection like we had to do on my 5800. This is a good job because I can only edit a data packet connection but can't add one. I can only add a wireless connection as I say.
I found out that when I click on Foreca Weather. it say Preparing for installation please wait. Then it show uninstall, download, update for a short period of time until a error message appears & says unable to download `foreca-weather-applet`. Application package not found.
When I click download it sys application package partially refreshed. Some catalogues unavailable. Check catalogue details. When I check catalogue details. Failed catalogues are Nokia Applications, Nokia System Software Updates, Ovi. If I click Nokia applications, it says in a red link https://downloads.meamo.nokia.com/fremantle/ssu/apps/./Packages Proxy CONNECT aborted.
Also their is no Multi media messaging. Also I can't give contacts a different ringtone. Can anyone offer any help into the problems I'm having. I haven't tried any other apps. I've only added the mediaplayer widget & Internet shortcut.
    Many thanks for any replies.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Olá, como vai você ceroberts75.
Thanks for the help. The firmware didn't get screwed up I don't think. Just certain PIM or media songs videos etc. The calendar entries, some film trailers didn't go over. Contacts, notes, all there.
Everything works like a dream now. Application Manager issues were solved. I disabled the catalogues & do a reboot. Enable catalogues & download update manager started working.
Also I managed to download Foreca Weather, Documents to go, 1.3.3 fMMS. I really haven't had any other issues that would make me question the Meamo install.
I have the 02 wap settings connection set to "use any connection". The Web, downloads & everything works like OVI Store Beta I can send MMS through 02 ok, make receive SMS, voice calls etc.. SMS is pretty basic, simple but is excellent & works great.  I noticed add recipient, txt, smiley & send. Settings are pretty basic you can't change the col of text, font, & other format tools, but you get these in the sketch!
The only thing I can't do is assign ringtones to contacts. Because I'm new to linux I'm not familiar with the way you do things. I have noticed that you have asked me to use the X-Terminal. But most of the Apps have been downloaded via the app manager downloads thus far.
Is their a reason for using the command line? If so I would like to try the instructions you gave for
    sudo gainroot
    apt-get update
    apt-get install fmms fapn per-contact-ringtones foreca-weather-applet optimizen900 optimizen900-pm
only I have fMMS & Foreca already so can I enter only the apps I need in command line? don't know whether I need other packet data connections. Using 02 wap, could I be using a better faster connection?
Here is a list of all apps installed on my N900, can you explain to me if everything here all correct or missing ceroberts75? Thanks. Here goes...

I think I might use phone for a while unless you say there are things missing o that shouldn't be there. As far as I know I have tried everything & they work apart from some Internet radio stations which won't buffer & play, but that's prob normal & means the stream os down or something.
I appreciate all the help given here. Thank you very much to everyone who has taken their time to contribute to my cause. (I know I'm not the only one) who expresses a big thanks.
Meamo is so different to what I'm used to but I'm loving it & I won't leave it. I want to learn more, the cloud is just going to be one BIG huge Advertising piece of bloatware so I glad I didn't invest in Android. Symbian too old looking but really functional, capable which is what I always wanted. Something that didn't look to good on the GUI but did what you wanted it to do  it had extensive support fudamentally!
    Thanks guys
