24" iMac black 'mask?'

This may not be the right forum for this (?) but...
Anyone heard of a mask that can be applied to the front of a 24" iMac so that I won't have to look at that glaring white frame?
Thanks.

Well, you could buy one of these then have a seamstress cut & sew a nice seam around the screen size cutout. Be sure to cut breather & speaker holes also.
Might be kind of cool!

    Not that i'm aware of.
After you add the adjustment layer, you could press Ctrl+i (Command+i) to invert the mask.

  • What is the technical 'cause' of the infamous iMac black screen problem?

Can anybody shed some light on what technical malfunction exactly causes the infamous iMac black screen problem? The common solution seems to be a logic board replacement. But what exactly is broken on the logic board? Is it the Geforce chip? Some kind of external driver circuitry? Or something completely different?

I was referring to the many problems also described in this thread (and also in many other places):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=196774&tstart=0
In specific I am referring to machines where all of this applies:
    - internal monitor stays black after power-on
    - computer boots normally
    - external display works normally
    - internal display backlight works and can be adjusted in brightness, but all pixels are black
    - PRAM reset doesn't help
    - NVRAM reset doesn't help
    - PMU reset doesn't help
    - reinstalling OS / booting from CD doesn't help
    - machines with this problem sent to repair come back with a replaced logic board
I'm looking for more information on the technical cause of the exact problem as stated above. So I can attempt to repair my iMac

  • White edge on black mask?

I created a black rectangular frame size 720x480 about 10 pixels wide, with a transparent interior, as a Photoshop file, and used QT Pro to add it as a video track in a layer above a completely black video, also 720x480. You'd think the combination would yield a completely black video, but in fact there is a thin white edge of the inside of my black frame showing.
The same thing happens when I just put a mask of a 10 pixel frame on the video itself. To keep QT from resizing the whole video in this case (because it loses the masked out portion) I added a solid black 720x480 still image behind the video. When my frontmost video has a picture, it plays OK surrounded by a black frame, but when the picture goes black, I still see a thin white rectangle remains.
I tried exporting this as a MOV file and viewing it in iMovie, and I still see the thin white rectangle.
Why the white artifact and any suggestions how to get rid of it?
    PowerMac Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

I've noticed it since QT 6 with some of my skin track movies.
It seems the default offset 0,0 (upper left corner) becomes 1,1 which would leave a one pixel line at the bottom and right side. Trying to adjust the offset on the track never worked for me.
I ended up using a track dimension one pixel smaller for the "transparent" area.
If you're trying to crop via a mask you'll be better served using MPEG Streamclip as the other poster has noted. It can work with .mov files, too.

  • Please Help: iMac black screens after startup logo + spinning wheel no cursor).

    Hi, guys.
I'm in a fair bit of a desperate situation; my iMac's screen seems to shut down every time after the white startup screen. The Apple logo appears, & the progress wheel begins spinning, then after a while - when it would usually then go to the gray login screen - it would, instead, go black. I can tell that the machine is still on (I can still hear it clicking as it does during processing) but I'm unable to determine anything else. Nothing is visible on the screen - not even the cursor - it's as if the display had turned off completely. I'm not sure if the login screen sits beneath that black screen (I have tried to log on by typing my login details in blindly, but even if it does log in, it's hard to determine what state the computer is in without seeing the screen.
I have tried the PRAM reset (holding CMD+OPT+P+R) during both the white startup screen, & the black screen to no avail. It seems unresponsive because I don't hear any additional chimes that I've been told should be heard during a PRAM reset attempt. I can't even be sure that the command is being inputted correctly because the light on my wireless keyboard remains off during the process.
I've tried rebooting over & over again; the results are the same.
The steps that led to the problem occurred thusly:
1 - I was trying to clear some memory from my current session, so I scanned through my active processes, quitting anything which seemed to be eating up considerable amounts of memory.
2 - One particular process I quit was 'launchd' which was functioning under my profile username.
3 - After quitting launchd, all opened apps seemed to close, & it looked like I was forcibly logged off the machine. The screen froze during this point, & I decided to do a hard reboot to log back in.
4 - The problem began after this hard reboot; startup seemed to occur as per usual; white screen > apple logo > progress wheel > and then suddenly, a black screen where the login screen should be.
I've shown a flashlight into the screen while it's black & it seems well & truly like the display has shut down while the iMac continues in the background. I have had issues relating to my screen going black before, but they were random & intermittent; they didn't occur without fail during the exact same time immediately after startup, & could be remedied by using the CTRL+OPT+EJT keys.
I am on an iMac 2010, 27", using I believe Lion OSX. I am unable to recall additional specifications while the problem persists.
Could anybody please help me? I'm quite desperate; I was in the middle of some urgent work that I need to get back to as soon as possible.
Thank you I'm advance to anyone with advice on how I can go about fixing this.
    ,c.

    Gray screen appears during startup

  • IMac black screen

When I turn my computer on, I get the apple as usual.  Once that process is complete, the screen goes black.  Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Welcome to ASC, Shelly!
iMacs have been in continuous production since 1998 in four broad families and literally hundreds of variants. We need to know what iMac you have and what Mac OS it is running to begin to help ("iOS" as currently shown in your equipment profile cannot run on any Mac computer, only Apple's mobile devices).
As the computer does not start, you will probably have to use the serial number to look up your model. If the computer is newer, you can enter the serial number here:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
to get it translated into a Model desgnator. If your computer is older or the Apple link does not work, try this one:
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
Once you post your results, we can begin to work through your computer's issues.
FWIW, this forum covers older iMacs made from 1998 to 2005. There is another forum for iMacs made in 2006 through present.
    Awaiting your response,
    Allan

  • 2nd iMac: Black Screen

I am on my 2nd iMac. My first one was replaced on 11/12. I installed the updates including the new firmware one. Today at 11:14 am Eastern, the screen went black and wouldn't come back. No warning, no nothing...not even fade to black, just pitch black in a nano-second. I had to hard reboot.
All I had open was Safari and I was reviewing, not editing it, simply reading a Word doc that my partner had emailed to me earlier this morning.
Are folks experiencing black screens after the Firmware update?

    Hi GoKayak,
I have not had any issues since the firmware update.
If it just shut off and you are certain that there were no power failures, tripped breakers, blown fuses or any significant drops in line voltage at the plug then it must be a hardware issue. If you are stating that it didn't just freeze, but it actually shut down by itself that is usually indicates that the power supply is going bad or it is overheating. Generally if it is overheating it would have to cool down before you could turn it back on. Since I didn't gather that that is what happened from your post, in other words you could reboot immediately, then it has to be something else. Unfortunately all you can do is call Apple and ask for another one or a repair on the one you have.
I am sure sorry to hear of the problem especially since it is your second Mac. You might want to see if you can speak to Customer Relations when you call. They have more authority to do things than the normal tier 1 people or the product specialists. I think I might ask for a little something for my trouble, like a free copy of iWork or a cut on an Applecare agreement. What's the worst they can say?
The only things I can suggest is that you check the hard drive with the system profiler and make sure the SMART status says verified, maybe reseting the PRAM and NVRAM would help, but I don't hold out much faith for that myself.
I do hope you get the issue solved.

  • G4 iMac Black Screen - went pop!

    Hi everyone,
This my first post (in the right place) and I must admit I am a bit desperate!
I have just turned on my iMac, there was a little pop and the screen remained black. The hard disk is spinning fine and has started up OK, so I can access it over ethernet (thank goodness!).
Unlike the other post about the black screen - I can't see anything at all, no outlines and it didn't go gradually, just a black screen... is the advice likely to be the same?
Thanks in advance for any help offered!

Perhaps the "pop" may have been the inverter. That'd stop the display from
working; or worse, some other part has gone toast.
Can you attach an external video adapter to run a VGA display; such as the
adapter normally included with the computer when new? If you can, at least
you can use it awhile and maybe archive your data or work off the machine,
and plan on when or where it may see this issue repaired.

  • IMac Black Screen with fans running...Static damage?

Upgraded the RAM and replaced the Superdrive in my late 2006 17" core duo imac last week.  It was on and worked perfectly for a week and now the screen went black but the fans stay on.  If I damaged it with static a week ago would it just now exhibit?

In addition to reseating or repalcing the RAM do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

  • IMac black screen when streaming to Appletv

Does anyone have any idea why my 1 year old iMac gives me a black screen when we are watching a movie with our Appletv. Once we stop streaming the movie the iMac will respond again. It is running Lion with all the software updates.

For the unplugging and reconnecting, be sure to follow this procedure precisely.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
You should disconnect ALL cables when you do this procedure. When you reconnect the power cord, if you have been using an old or crowded power strip, try connecting it directly to a wall outlet, at least for this test. Power it up with just nothing connected, except for the power cord.

  • IMac black screen and flashing power light

I installed several system updates on my 2007 iMac last night, running OS 10.7, and today I can only get a black screen with a flashing white power light when I try to start up. My computer will neither start up nor completely shut down, and my wired keyboard won't communicate either. Help!

    Power down, unplug if needed.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.

  • Intel iMac Black screen on wake up from sleep

Hi, has anyone come across this? My imac intel 20" running 10.4.11 now routinely presents me with a black screen on waking up from sleep. The computer still seems to run as normal, the mail application beeps when new mail is received but the screen is black. I have to switch off the computer, reboot and do a NVRAM reset, sometimes up to 8 times in order to get a functioning screen. The beautiful Lexus has turned into a 10 year old Ford Escort; i think -not sure though- that this started with the latest system update. All advice greatly appreciated. Jan

I, too, have this problem. I don't have a cure but I do have a workaround.
If you close the lid again and watch the light on the front it will be solid on.  Keep the lid closed and keep waiting (which might take a minute or two) and eventually the light will start "breathing".  Now you can open the lid and your computer should be up and running normally.
Although waiting for the light to start breathing is a pain (especially if you're pressed for time) it's still quicker and safer than shutting down and restarting.

  • Serious issues with iMac, black screen during erase and install-PLEASE HELP

My sister's Intel iMac G5 seriously has been a lemon, it has had SO many issues. It's now 2 years old, and has been rather slow for the maybe the last year, but over the last month or so it has gone way downhill, and it literally takes an hour to boot up, and 4-5 minutes to do anything (open an application, look at a photo in iPhoto, etc.). So, we've been trying to "erase and install" with her install discs to hopefully give the computer a clean boot and see if it helps at all. She has already backed everything up.
She started the erase and install last night, and it was going ridiculously slow. This morning when she woke up, the blue progress bar had gone about half way across. Then she went to get her kids ready, and when she came back in it looked like the computer was rebooting itself (gray screen with apple), but then the screen turned black and she can't do anything on it. Has anyone seen anything similar to this before?
We have had so much trouble getting this to work (we tried an archive and install a few days ago, but it gave her an error at the end). For about a day we couldn't even get the computer to boot up at all, but then miraculously yesterday morning it booted! Please help, I've converted her to Macs but if I can't get hers fixed she may never get one again!!

I'm afraid that it's a contradiction in terms to talk about an intel iMac G5. What your sister has is an intel machine, and she will find good advice by posting to the [intel iMac Forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1110].

  • IMac Black Squares, Transparent Menu

I was using Adobe CS5 when suddenly my iMac starts acting strange: the finder windows are black, or have black squares and red lines behind the icons, the menus are transparent.
But the computer Works fine in safe mode.
I erased HD and reinstalled Mountain Lion, everything was back to normal until I installed CS5 again, and it went back to the same issue.
Apple Customer care was awesome, but couldn't fix the issue, concluding it might be an Adobe broken drive.
I called Adobe, they do not have live support for CS5 and told me to post on Adobe forum. Before I do that, I was wondering if anyone had this issue w/o Adobe installed.
