24" iMac breaking my heart

I have really been through the mill the last couple of weeks.
I installed 10.6.8 from Software Update, at which point my wi fi network just collapsed.  Had major weird issues trying even to work with my time capsule wired to either my iMac or MBP.  So Apple said, we'll send you a new TC.
New TC arrives, and when I go to start the process of setting it up, my iMac has a picture of a giant Hard Drive against a black screen.  I thought it was some kind of funky screen saver, but it became apparent that it was a pretty catastrophic crash.
Called Apple support and they talked me through doing a complete restore from my TC - you know, the one that isn't working very well.  Six hours later, iMac appears to be working ok, but I have a corrupted iPhoto library (thankfully the picture and video files are in there, just no database file).  So Apple suggests restoring an older backup of my iPhoto library (again, from the wonky old TC).  So I start this process, and it estimates 96 hours.  I'm thinking, it'll revise that.  But no, it really is moving that slow.  After about 40 odd hours, the restore finally quit - again, no usable library.
At this stage, I'm freaking out, because my old TC has to be returned to Apple or they will charge me for the replacement, but I am now super reluctant to part with my only backups.  I use disk utility to archive my old TC backups to a separated HD.  I copy my picture and video files to another HD.  So I'm thinking at least I have my children's baby pictures.
I basically start from scratch with iPhoto and import my photos from my old iPhoto library.  New TC is slowly backing everything up.  Finally does this.  Next stop: kernel panic.  Get the thing running from a 10.6 disk, Apple advises an archive install, which fails twice.  So I erase the hard drive, reinstall, then use migration assistant to bring in my data.  Next thing - it freezes.  I hard reboot, it takes approximately 40 minutes to restart - even from the 10.6 disk.  I'm on the phone with Apple through this 40 minute drama and they keep saying, as long as the computer sees the hard drive, the hard drive is probably fine.  It eventually starts up, bunch of permission repairs, etc. It appears to work normally for about 30 hours, turning it on and off, restarting normally.  I do another TM backup (had to erase my only active backup because the fresh install wouldn't recognize the old backup).  Did a few more backups on TC - imported a few pictures from my phone (didn't delete from my phone) - bought an album on iTunes and did a TM backup, just to be sure it was picking up new files.
Thank god, that backup completed, because this morning, I can see the computer froze about an hour after I went to bed.  Had to hard reboot, and I'm getting the big file with a "?"  I've tried resetting the PRAM, leaving it unplugged, booting in safe mode and trying to boot from the 10.6 disk.  I either get the "?" or it just ejects the DVD.  I am fairly sure the HDD is gone.  But I'm really terrified of calling Apple again, because they are going to try messing around for another several hours of hard drive erasing reinstalling, etc.  At what point can you be reasonably sure you've got a hardware problem?  I would think not being able to boot from a DVD is probably a pretty safe sign? I have spent HOURS on the phone over the last two weeks.  It has ruined my time off work - my kids hate me.
All through this the SMART status has never reported anything, but is that completely reliable?
Has anyone been through anything similar? Has anyone ever recovered data from an archived TM backup?

Good news: my data is safe!
The iMac: remains to be seen.  It's waiting in the iMac hospital - the quick look they took suggests bad logic or RAM.  I assume I should be hoping it's RAM as it looks like logic boards are not cheap.
I really don't want to have to buy a new computer, but I don't want to pour a ton of money into it.  For starters, I really can't afford it.  And I don't really feel any huge desire to upgrade - this computer is perfect for our needs.  I don't particularly desire a 27" monitor, and I wouldn't want to get a smaller one.
What would be the major distinction between the behavior of a computer with bad RAM versus a dying/dead logic board?
I had a lot of system freezes, one kernel panic, a few very s l o w startups and finally, as above, it wouldn't boot from anything.  They really struggled to get it to boot from anything yesterday - they had a few different external drives hooked up to it.

  • File sharing between Mac Mini and iMac "breaks" after reboot of either device, and won't restore.  Why?  Running Maverick 10.9.1 on both.  File sharing is setup on both.  Help.

I'm a new user - recent convert from longtime Windows to Apple.  Thought having desktops and computing aligned with phones and tablets would help.  Not so far.
I have a MacMini running Mavericks 10.9.1, and an iMac running Mavericks 10.9.1.  File Sharing is set up on both.  If either device is rebooted for any reason, file sharing from the Mac Mini to the iMac "breaks" and will not easily restart.  Various things eventually brings the connection back - usually having to do with checking and unchecking File Sharing, the AFP button, and/or the SMB button on the iMac - but never the same procedure twice in a row.  File Sharing from the iMac to the Mac Mini is never disrupted - always comes back up without a problem.  Screen Sharing also works between both without fail, and comes up after reboot of either.  No problem there.  Only difficulty is from Mac Mini to the iMac.
    Why?  Any ideas?

Should also clarify - usually takes multiple hours of checking/unchecking file sharing settings in order to restore the share between Mac Mini and iMac.  NEVER happens automatically.
This is disruptive because I've got the Mac Mini pointing to several file locations on the iMac for various things - photos, music, etc. - and they all hang up unless the share is restored.  Real bummer.

  • The backlighting of my imac breaks down

My imac which is less than three years old, already presents a breakdown!
The screen is not any more enlightened uniformly on all its surface.
For a computer of this price it is inadmissible.
Apple wants to charge me more than 500 euros the repair.
It is of the obsolescence scheduled or the defect of the screen that apple does not want to recognize !!
    Help !
    Thx

    What does 'fell down' mean?

Almost two weeks ago, after years of admirably flawless performance, my Firefox 26.0 was struck by recurrent episodes of complete unresponsiveness, and frequent crashes.
Efforts to remedy these problems, involving disabling various add-ons and JS, failed.
Now I have some important new information. When operating normally, Firefox never uses more than about 3% or, rarely 5% of my CPU, even when I have many tabs open to websites, even when several of those websites are playing videos, etc. (I have had the Task Manager open constantly this week in order to be able to close Firefox when it's so unresponsive I can't use X to close it, so I was in a position to observe CPU usage.) But when Firefox is in the early stages of an episode of unresponsiveness (for example, when I can't download files or play videos) the CPU usage is greater than 25%. What's even more remarkable is that if I then close all tabs, and have only one “New Tab” open (so that I'm theoretically not using Firefox at all), the CPU usage remains over 25%!!
Over the past few days I've a) confirmed and reconfirmed this perfect correlation between Firefox's unresponsiveness and a dramatic, unprecedented increase in CPU usage to in excess of 25%, occurring completely out of the blue, in no way triggered by my doing anything, and b) verified that when Firefox is responding normally, NOTHING I do causes the usage to go above about 5%.
But the question is: what is causing this abnormal CPU usage that is clearly associated with Firefox's unresponsiveness?
For the record, I have run repeated scans using Windows Defender and MalwareBytes and nothing malicious has been detected, and I have had no other problems with my computer besides the ones with Firefox. Chrome continues to operate perfectly normally.

I suggest you continue this conversation in the thread you have already opened.
The fact that you are using the CPU heavily compared with normal may help explain the Firefox unresponsiveness.
The question is what is it doing.
*Is it a direct Firefox process taking up this CPU use.
** If so why. <br />is malware running and making use of Firefox ?<br />Is this only on close down ?<br >is it only on a particular site ?
    *Is it the plugincontgainer ?
*Is it another process that may affect or slowdown Firefox ?
** can you identify the process.
** is security software involved, scanning or updating
Presumably sysinternals software - now available from microsoft - will help you answer such questions.
Ensure you give the information in the other thread so it may be considered along with the details you have already posted.
*''' The thread is ''After years of happily using Firefox, sudden, recurrent calamity'' [/questions/984055]'''
    Back to basics
You really need to troubleshoot by using Firefox
    *in a new clean profile
    * with all plugins disabled
    *in Firefox's safemode
*even try it with only this forum open as the only tab
I would hope in such a configuration you do not get
    * 25% CPU usage.
    * Crashes
We should be able to work from that to figure out what else is implicated in your problems.
Please answer in the other thread [/questions/984055] .

    HI,
May not be completely fixed as your Flash Player plugin is outdated. *0xfb1f000 - 0x10159ffb +com.macromedia.Flash Player.plugin /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player.plugin/Contents/MacOS/Flash Player*
If Safari crashes again, uninstall then reinstall Flash, then repair permissions.
    Uninstall Flash
Install the most recent version of Flash here.
    Now repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Compilations are breaking my heart-simple question...

OK folks, this is a simple question - so why can't i find a clear answer anywhere? I am running Itunes 8, Win XP, been running Itunes for my music for about 4 years.
Current setup 3 users running Itunes on same pC.
My problem is when I browse my lbrary each song in my compilations are showing upas different albums e.g. "O Brother where art thou" has 14 different "albums" as do some home-made compilations I have been given.
"group compilations when browsing is selected" but obviously isn;t working
It's obviously simple but not to me...help
    Thanks
    Message was edited by: munstershug

You mention enabling the iTunes option to *Group compilations when browsing*, but have you also set the *Part of a Compilation* flag to Yes for each track of your compilations? See my recent post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • ScrollPane Problem breaking my heart...

HI .I Want to read in a number from a textfield. This number will decide how many textfileds will appear on a panel. I want to then add this panel to a ScrollPane.I have this working but when the panel is in the scrollPane it doesnt scroll down the full length of the panel
    heres my code structure
    Create Scrollpane
    Read integer
    Create panel with textFields
    Add Panel to Scrollpane
    Add ScrollPane
    Is this the wrong way.....
    Any help really appreciated

The client area of a ScrollPane is sized according to the components preferred size. The return value of the panels getPreferredSize is interesting. Does it have the value you expect?
    public Dimension getPreferredSize()
         Dimension dim;
         dim=super.getPreferredSize();
         System.out.println(Preferre size:+dim.width+, +dim.height);
         Return dim;
}The other possible problem is the validation. When is the layout performed?
    public void doLayout()
         System.out.println(doLayout() called);
}Try to add the above two methods to your panel class.
    Ragnvald.

  • IMac Heartbreak: Fear & Worry For My Family

This is a post I wrote in my blog tonight. I don't know where else to turn. Maybe if I post this here, someone @ Apple will read it and maybe something can turn around.
    POST BEGINS HERE ---------
I must start at the beginning, for those of you who have not been following my reported travails in this situation through my Facebook and Twitter posts.
Almost two months ago, electricity surged through my building and killed my iMac. I don’t know what happened. I had two other laptops on, and none of them experienced the same problem. Bottom line, my computer that had never given me trouble previously, suddenly went AWOL. And has remained decidedly so ever since.
    <!--more-->
I boxed it up the next day, and had to endure the humiliation of having my mother pay to send it back to California, where my dear friend took it into Apple for repair or replacement.
By the time it got there--admittedly a while after I sent it--it was out of warrantee. Apple agreed to honour the warrantee, because when it arrived in California, my friend was travelling and it could not be brought in time. It was only a week or so out of warrantee in any case.
Apple opted not to replace it, but instead ordered a new logic board with the integrated upgraded NVidia GeForce card I ordered with the machine, a new power management unit and a new screen.
They boxed it up, my friend collected it and sent it back to me.
By this time, it had been gone for almost six weeks.
My finances were decimated by this. I needed the machine to work to capacity, and neither of the two laptops here are more than web browsing machines. None can power the tool kit that I use to do what it is I do every day.
I lost both my main contracts, had to turn down a couple projects because I knew I couldn’t do them justice, and basically by this point, when it got back from California, I was dead broke and living off of the charity of friends and my family.
Did I mention I had to pay almost $1000BDS to get it to and from California? Adding to the state I was in?
Let me describe it to you. I’ve been going hungry so my child could eat. We went without enough food for weeks while this machine was being repaired. My electricity was on the verge of being disconnected, my Internet access WAS disconnected, and my landlord had to wait weeks for me to collect enough small amounts to pay my rent. My mother and 89 year old grandmother paid my son’s school fees so I could keep him in school, and well I cried a lot at my own wretchedness.
I am crying as I type this, because this story is so not over.
So four Wednesdays ago, my computer gets back from California, and thankful to all I consider holy, I eagerly unpacked it, ready to climb my way out of my situation the way I always do, with hard, hard, hard, hard work.
I booted up, and my computer began to behave erratically. Blue screen of death, grey screen hangs, black outs, weird vertical lines. I fought with it for days, tried every trick in my arsenal, combed every useful forum I knew looking for ways to solve what was going on.
In the end I admitted defeat, called Apple and burned up some SkypeOut minutes, they walked me through everything they could think of, and yet it still did not work. I followed up on a lead, and called in the best Apple Support guy on the island, who walked me through some stuff, suggested I swap the RAM.
In this experience, I can only say that my faith and the unbelievable kindness that I am a beneficiary of on a regular enough basis to tell you I know that I am a charmed child, despite the horrors of this story.
A friend of mine, BOUGHT me new memory, since I didn’t have a crumb, and by this time was surviving on what my mother could siphon from her larder, and I had been going days without eating more than crackers.
He brought them for me, I installed them, and it improved the performance but did not solve the problem.
The Apple Support guy came out, re-installed the OS from scratch, and while he was beginning to work with the machine, the weird glitches and ticks continued.
He declared this a hardware problem, and that there was nothing more he could do for me.
After calling up Apple again, they said the repair had a 90-day warrantee, and the parts a one-year warrantee, so if I could just find the money (out of my *** right) to get it the closest Apple Repair Centre, they would fix it.
It took me almost a week to scrape enough money together to send it to F1 Connect in Trinidad. Off it went. And there it’s been up to the point i am typing this.
The did all kind of diagnostics and that alone took a few days, and they declared it to be a fault in the logic board. That was TWO Fridays ago.
Last week was a two day week, as there were three public holidays, but the replacement logic board was ordered last Wednesday. It arrived yesterday, was installed yesterday, and guess what?
My machine is still behaving strangely, the screen is now apparently showing dark and they’ve ordered a new one. They're also testing it again to see if the problem is rectified, but the guy said it's the worst machine his shop has every seen, and there is no rhyme or reason to these issues.
So, wait! WAIT, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT a minute!
Right now as I type this, more parts have gone into this computer than what it was orginally worth, and for the last two months my child and I have been struggling to survive while all this has been going on, and they STILL don’t have a clue what’s going on with it.
The thing that bothers me the most, is the Apple Store in California. How could they gut out this machine and pretty much replace every component of any value in it, and not even check to see that it was WORKING properly before they sent it back? Does that make sense to you?
I feel a level of hysteria that it is only the sheer force of my considerable will is battling down.
Not because this has been inconvenient. It has certainly been that, but I am still in that hard place. Struggling to keep my child fed and in school and the roof over our heads, and my ability to do that is entirely bound up with the iMac now in Trinidad.
I feel completely powerless, and I don’t know who to reach out to to ask for help. I need to work. I don’t want a hand out, I just want to work. I need my computer to work.
Why can’t Apple just send me a new computer?
It’s not like I don’t evangelise. Ask anyone who has met me in the last 15 years if I waste an opportunity to rave about Apple and the Macintosh. I sold the first iMac ever in Barbados in 1998. The iMac currently breaking my heart is my seventh Apple computer. And I will buy Apple again. I will always buy Apple. I am one of those die-hard Apple brain-washed folks people sneer at, don’t get, but who will preach the Mac Gospel as long as Apple keeps producing beautiful operating systems.
Even after this, I will never shift from my Macintosh environment to any other type of OS. My life’s work is bound up with Apple technology and the Mac Os platform. I feel no shame or remorse whatsoever in buying that iMac.
But this is breaking my heart. All I can do is cry and cry, because the one thing I want to do is work and earn enough to keep my little boat with me and my little boy in it afloat, and for two months I’ve not really been able to do that.
So I face losing my apartment now, and am desperately  trying to figure out how to keep my boy at school. We’re getting lower and lower on food supplies again. I have been hanging on and hanging on hoping the computer would return by next week. Since this does not seem likely, I face losing what little project work I’ve been holding on (and off on) because a client will only be patient with your drama just so long, and then what?
What happens to my life in two weeks? I really don’t know what to say. I just have faith that something can and will turn around for me.
At this point, I think Apple should just send me a new computer, because I cannot see how pouring more parts worth more than the machine, is productive or efficient. Neither do I think I can sustain what is shaping up to be another three week wait. I am just barely managing my panic thinking about it.
So this is me... in a proper righteous fret, but trying really hard not to let this newest delay... do what? Do what? Depress me, frighten me, worry me? I am already doing that. I am a single mother and not being able to support us is the thing that frightens and scares me most in life. What I won’t let it do is destroy my faith in myself, or in Apple.
I just want a machine I can work on. Really work on. I just want to get back to work.

BCB... do you have any idea what it's like to be a single mother, a tech person, working and living in this country? You don't sound like you do. You cannot know intimately my circumstances beyond what I am sharing here in an effort to find a SOLUTION and more importantly guidance. if you can offer neither, then kindly reserve either comment or judgement of my life based on your yardstick.
I am a woman in the world with much intellectual capital in a country that has no respect for it. How I have had to make my way, is the way that I must make. It has kept me alive, and my child alive. I work very, very, very hard. I produce good work. I am not looking for a handout, I want to work. Right now I cannot work to any capacity because of this. My situation does not provide nice comfortable buffers you may live with. I really am part of those faceless masses of women out there in the world who have to use what wits they have to live by and provide for themselves and their own.
    Don't judge me. I don't steal, I don't whore and I maintain my integrity.
    1) My computer was not unprotected. And three other machines in the house did not fail. All are connected to the same power supply.
    2) Apple DID agree to honour the warrantee, not once but twice, so have accepted some responsibility or at least some willingness to extend their service to cover me. And why not, karmically it benefits them to help small fries like me. I am part of the force of tech people who have single-handedly convinced as many of my peers as possible to buy and consume Apple products wherever possible.
    3) The problems I have been reporting with the iMac are rife throughout these SAME forums and others. I found ample evidence of this during my searches for a potential solution. I cannot say that lightning was the cause of the problem. Only lightning struck my building and shortly thereafter my problems began. Maybe they're coincidental... maybe not. My point remains.
    4) iMac was REPAIRED and sent back NOT WORKING. Sent back under warrantee for parts and repairs, parts have been replaced and is still not working. Dude... come on! If the machine came back and the parts installed were defective, then they're under warrantee. So don't say I don't have a valid claim for service. Apple is known to help people like me in these situations.

  • Dead Pixels on brand new 24" iMac

I picked up my 24" 2.8GHz, 1GB Ram, 320GB HDD iMac on Friday the 22/02/08, and the first thing I noticed was a few dead pixels. There is a green one in the top left, one in the middle/right top and what seems like a clump of about 2 or 3 in the middle of the screen. I am very annoyed, I paid alot of extra money for a 'Premium Mac.' I will not settle for just letting this go.
So, what is the warranty/general rule for pixels?
Will they replace it gladly? Or say there isn't enough missing pixels?
This is a brand new fresh out of the box Mac. If they refuse to replace it I will just return it because I'm not satisfied with the quality.
Is there a time period in which I can return an iMac because I don't think it is good quality?
P.S. I love my iMac! But seeing it with such a defection is breaking my heart, this is my baby!!!
    P.P.S I'm in Australia
    Thanks for any help!
    Tristan Marsh, Melbourne

The policy on pixels varies from manufacturer to manufacturer but one thing is consistent: none of which I am aware have a zero defect rule. Most companies look at three different factors: location, clustering, and number. A couple dead pixels clusters in the middle of the screen tends to be regarded as more serious then a couple dead pixels clustered on the edge. A moderate number of pixels scattered about the screen is considered less serious still. All you can do is 1) first deal with the local dealer and if that fails, 2) try dealing with corporate.
BTW, if you do a search on fix dead pixels, dead pixels, and dead lcd pixels, you'll find there are a lot of programs that claim to do just that. In general, I've seen more success with stuck pixels being fixed (they are always on) rather than unlit pixels, but I've even seen them revived on occasion through the use of these programs.

  • I am confused about how to manage photos between my iPhone, iMac and iPad.  How do I avoid using all the storage pace on my various devices?

How do I manage photos between my ipad, iphone and imac without using all the storage on the various devices?

If enabled, iCloud Photo Stream ensures all new photos are sent to all your devices. Then you can simply add the ones you want to each one's Library, and delete any photos you don't want.
One technique is to designate one device as the "master" containing all your photos - probably your iMac, since it is likely to have the greatest available storage - and make sure you have a backup strategy for it. That way, any photos you choose to keep on your iPad and iPhone are redundant copies that can be deleted as you wish, or as required should you need to restore your iOS device. If your iMac breaks and its Library irretrievably lost, the importance of its backup becomes critical. Therefore, consider having more than one backup, and more than one geographical location for them.

  • Safari keeps crashing/re-loading when using hotmail to compose messages

I finally convinced my husband... after years of begging to buy me a new Mac and switch from using a PC. Now that I have transferred all our data over to our new iMac (which was purchased on 4/2/10--so it is a very new) and we are ready to make our iMac our main computer, Safari keeps crashing when we are using hotmail to compose messages. Suddenly, while in the middle of composing a hotmail email message Safari will "flash" and re-load and my entire message is gone. SUPER SUPER SUPER frustrating when I have spent quite some time writing and crafting messages to my Board Members. I have included the error message below. I also have switched Safari to open in 32-bit mode.
Can someone help me? I am about to go back to using our Dell computer. But I am such an Apple loyalist it breaks me heart. Everything I own is Apple.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Now that I have transferred all our data over to our new iMac (which was purchased on 4/2/10--so it is a very new) and we are ready to make our iMac our main computer, Safari keeps crashing when we are using hotmail to compose messages.
It's quite possible you copied over files including fonts that aren't Mac compatible.
First, if you use Word, go here for help to resolve font problems: How to troubleshoot font problems in Office for Mac programs
You should also check here for help with fonts. Font problems and management in OS X
Next, Hotmail is written by Microsoft so there are many users here who have posted with problems accessing Hotmail on Safari. You might have better
luck using the Firefox browser available for download here. Mozilla Firefox
And delete the Hotmail cookies. From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete all Microsoft/Hotmail related cookies, click Done. Now click "Autofill" from that menu, click the Edit button next to "Other forms". Delete .hotmail.com and microsoft.com if it's available.
    Relaunch Safari.
Also, if you have not repaired disk permissions as yet since you've had your iMac, it can take as long as ten minutes. There's a progress bar that you can watch.
Quit Disk Utility.
    Restart your Mac.

  • IMIC - how the **** does it work?

I've read the posts regarding this tricky little beast but cant get a signal through on my mac. I've followed all the offered advice on settings and levels, noted the "counter-intuitive" button on the gadget itself, used garageband, audacity, toast, peak and final vinyl and I even got to the point where I cut off the phono plugs and stuck the bare wires into the speaker outlets - at least that got a connection, but obviously not much good for sound quality!
Do you think that the aux outlets on my hifi dont work? Unfortunately my other, newer, hifi doesn't have aux outlets - is there any other way of making a connection or any other way of geting a couple of hundred cds - mostly deleted classical recordings - zapped onto my mac's hard drive? I've spent alot of time on this, so any help would be welcome.

Yes...I had been working through the night on my dissertation, but that's no excuse, I really didn't deserve any responses for a stupid slip of the keyboard like that - of course I meant cassettes! I really have checked all avenues suggested with my hifi and borrowed a second one with aux and still no success. So I'll buy another of those pesky little imics - unless there's something better on the market. It breaks my heart to see those now unobtainable recordings just sitting there without any possibility of re-editing them to bring them up to modern standards...
Anyways, thank you for your advice, guys.

  • Is my HD dying again???

So almost 2 months ago I bought a refurbished iMac. I do a heavy amount of music, and after about a week the HD started to show symptoms of death. I didn't know at the time, and I figured the reason it would lock up and need to be restarted constantly was because I was recording too much audio.
Eventually, it got to the point where I had to bring in the HD to get replaced, there's a lot more to the story but I don't even want to relive it, it was awful.
Anyway, whatever, so new HD, and I'm back in the game. A few minutes ago, I was recording as usual, and I got the dreaded "(Name of project) could not be saved." And I immediately knew what came next. Chrome would only display "Aw, Snap", and so I rebooted. Unfortunately, while rebooting, I got the kernel error thing with all the different languages at the Apple screen. So I rebooted again and it just stayed at the white screen. So I rebooted again into single-user mode and did a disk check, everything was fine but I saw "disk0s2 I/O error" a few times.
I exited and booted it back up. When I booted it back up it couldn't find my wireless mouse for a couple of minutes. Chrome still displayed "Aw, Snap". I repaired permissions and verified the disk. Everything was good. I start up Logic to see how much work I lost. It asked for my serial key. When my other HD was dying it would always do that with Logic.
Rebooted once more, everything's working fine again.
Look I guess I'm answering my own question here, and I suppose I need to back up everything I've got while I have a chance, but I guess mainly I'm looking for some reassurance. I've only had this thing for like a week since I got it back. This is breaking my heart. I can't just get a new HD every few weeks and go about installing 200GB worth of sounds and whatnot. Please someone tell me I'm crazy and things like this happen from time to time. The computer was working just fine until a few minutes ago.
Apple sure knows how to bring a grown man to tears, I swear.

    Welcome to Apple Support Discussions.
Well you are wise to backup. Due to the possibility of two failures so soon I'd take a look at the power you are plugging into. If you are plugging directly into the wall or using an inexpensive power strip that could be creating problems for you. I would recommend buying a UPS that can support your machine, this will help provide more stable power to your machine.
Because HD's are mechanical devices they can go out at any time, some last weeks some last months and some last many many years. Unfortunately there isn't any way to predict their life span.
To check your drive run Apple Hardware Test and see if you come up with any errors.
Because your machine is covered by warranty and this may be the second HD failure when you take it into the Apple Store you should bring this up.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • DNG inflating file sizes

I have seen a couple of explanations in here based on the 5d markii sraw issue, but when I convert files from either a 20d 1ds or 5d Mki I have the same issue,
Here are teh options I have checked for DNG preferences
    Jpeg preview None
    Compression off
    Image Conversion Preserve
    Original Raw Un-checked
    On average a 7.6MB cr2 file from the 20d goes to 16.7Mb
an 8MB file from the 1ds goes to 20MB
    and a 12MB 5d file is churning out a 25MB file
    Any ideas....??
I'd avoid it altogether except I use DNG to force camera support in CS for the 5d and its breaking my heart how slow it makes the whole process
    Johnny
    Canon eos 1ds eos 5d eos 20d
    Apple iMac g5 20inch 2gb RAM
    Adobe Photoshop CS

    > a 12MB 5d file is churning out a 25MB file
    > Compression off
    > Any ideas....??
    Perhaps....
    i compression on?
    > I have found if I don't use the compressed raw but the regular raw that I will actually get smaller DNG files than the compressed raw file
    1. The Sony A900's "compressed raw" is not only
    i compressed
    but
    i weeded
as well (in other words: it is
    i lossy
raw). When converted in DNG format, the lossy data gets converted into lossless format (of course this does not make up for the inherent lossiness). Therefor the DNG format is larger.
    2. The "normal" (lossless) raw data of the A900 is compressed by "packing", which is the cheapest (fastest, but least effective) way of compression supported in raw files. When converted in compressed DNG, the more effective compression will be applied.

  • Any audiophiles in the house? 24bit 96KHz audio and up!

I don't mean you twiddle knobs either...
I've been looking into replacing my CD player and in fact my whole hi-fi system. My wife says it is ugly (because it's all racked, black, bachelor pad stuff). It will break my heart to get rid of my fabulous Audiolab amp and my AE109 speakers but the CD player is barely used and the tuner has already been removed...
Anyway, I've been investigating high resolution audio files. These are higher bitrate and higher sample rate than CDs and as such offer the prospect of higher quality sound. As an experiment I downloaded an album I already own on CD at 24bit 96Khz then ripped the CD into iTunes as an Apple Lossless file. Because iTunes doesn't support FLAC files I had to use XLD to convert them into Apple Lossless files and then imported these into iTunes.
So playing them back-to-back in iTunes there is a massive difference in sound quality.
Since then I have learnt that iTunes won't play anything higher quality than 16 bit 44.1KHz and automatically downsamples anything higher. To get around this the settings can be adjusted for high resolution using Audio MIDI Setup. I have now done this and reimported the two pairs of files. Now the sound quality is even better.
However, it is all let down by the speakers I use with my iMac. These are Harmon Kardon Soundsticks and the matching sub-woofer. These are connected via USB. Fortunately the iMac has a digital output so I could use a Toslink cable to connect these to some powered speakers such as these...
    http://www.avihifi.co.uk/adm9.html
However they are mega bucks and really too big for my desk. Then I started thinking these could work in my lounge on suitable stands and if I could find a way of playing my hi-res files downstairs then I could lose the whole hi-fi system and replace it just with these powered speakers.
That opens another can of worms. Up to now I've used an Apple TV downstairs wired to my hi-fi to play digital files. I transfer them from the iMac via ethernet using a pair of those adaptor things that distribute internet using the mains circuit. That all works well except the Apple TV does not output files of higher quality than - you guessed it - 16 bit 44.1KHz.
    So I have two questions...
Does anyone know of any good quality, low-cost, Toslink enabled active speakers for use with my iMac and second, is there a way of transferring and playing the high res files through a Toslink enabled, Mac compatible server. If so which one?
And finally has anyone got the AVI active speakers I provided the link to and if so what do you think of them?
    Thanks,
    Rich

The ATV supports 24bit 48kHz, which sounds MUCH better than 16/44. Unless you have a very serious—deep-6-figure-cost—listening room, the bit depth is what's going to make the difference.
I'd consider myself an extraordinarily picky audiophile, but in the theater—and especially in the living room—the difference between 96khz and 48khz (or 88.2 and 44.1) on 24bit files is negligable.
Try 24/48 files on the ATV...the bit depth is the key to the quality...very few speakers in the sub-5-figure range are responsive/detailed enough to get anything out of 96k samples they're not getting out of 48k when they're already working with 24bit information.
