24"iMac can't access my MBP 17"

i have a iMac that will access screen sharing to my MBP but I can't get the iMac to
to access the MBP via wireless connection by accessing it either through Menu>Connected Servers
or by using the Finder Window by username & password it says one is wrong ?
I can connect to iMac from the MBP fine and File Sharing is on ..on both Mac's and
the iMac shares all with the MBP just like the MBP shares all w/ the iMac
i've never had this problem before i've tried different usernames & passwords
on the iMac with none working ?
Both are running OS 10.6.4
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

I like LaCie's Quadra d2's, G drives, and/or OWC (macsales.com) drives. Some/all are usually formatted for Windows, so you can reformat them with Disk Utility when you first plug them in - it as an easy process. You can also partition them at the same time if you want. You do not need to use any software included on drives. If you want them to be bootable, make sure they are (check the specs before you buy it - some LaCie's are not I've seen; however all their Firewire drives are I believe) and use the GUID partition scheme in Disk Utility.

  • My iMac can't see my MBP but my MBP can see my iMac

    A network issue? I guess.
Both of my computers have Lion OS; the MBP is brand new and shipped with Lion. I upgraded my late 2009 iMac with Lion recently.
I want to transfer files from one to another.
In Finder - my MBP can see my iMac file stucture - but my MBP doesn't appear in Finder on my iMac.
Is there a simple solution so both computers have "equal eyes"? Now that would be great!
    Cheers, Mal

If you have an account on the MBP you should be able to access it via the iMac. Can you log in from the MPB to the iMac? The problem is only from the iMac to the MBP?
First check the settings for File Sharing on the iMac and compare them to the settings in the MBP.
Now in Finder on the iMac you see the MBP in the shared section of the side bar, correct? If you click it you should be on the MBP as guest. Then in the upper right hand corner of the Finder window is the Connect As button. When you select that you get the window asking for your name and password. You have Registered User selected right? The name and password are the name an password for the MBP. If that is all correct you should get logged in.
You could try the Using an Apple ID and use the Apple ID you set for that account on the MBP.
    That should work.
    good luck

  • I get a 'prohibited symbol' when I try to startup my iMac, can't access computer. How to proceed?

    Hey guys,
So my iMac has had its first real problem since I bought it in 2010.
Yesterday I was browsing the internet on my iMac via tethering from my smart phone (Samsung galaxy ace, on vodafone, if that means anything) when suddenly it froze and I got the colourful spinning loading wheel and couldn't click on anything. This went on for long enough that I lost patience and turned off the Mac (by holding the power button) with the intention to start fresh. Nope, now I can't access my desktop anymore. Now, whenever I turn my Mac on it I see the grey screen with apple logo with the spinning loading thing under it, this lasts about 30 seconds and then it shows me a 'prohibited symbol' (i.e. A circle with a stroke in it). I then have to turn the computer off, and this repeats when I try startup again.
Now, after some googling a found that this is probably a "kernel panic". But the problem is that none of the solutions I've read seem to work.
    - I tried booting in safe mode by holding shift but it didn't seem to activate it..? (and I know its not a problem with the keyboard because I tried starting up and holding alt and that worked)
    - I also tried booting from my installs disc but that didn't work either, it just loads for a while then it gives me the prohibited symbol again.
    - I also know its probably not a problem with my hardware because everything is unplugged except my USB mouse.
    Some other facts:
    - I'm running Mac osx 10.6.2 (its all I've ever run, never updated)
    - strangely, the windows partition of my hard drive works fine. I just hold alt and then can still access windows. But then as soon as I try to tether the internet from my phone again, it works for about 2 minutes and then I get a quick bleu screen and the comp restarts, which makes me think this kernel panic was induced by furthering my internet.
    - On one of my startups yesterday I got a flashing folder icon with a question mark on it, all the other times its been the prohibited symbol.
I have a time machine hard drive that I can resort to if worse comes to worse, but the last time I backed up was about 2 months ago, which means id lose my creative work from the past 2 months (im a musician and ive been working on an album), which is obviously not preferable.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Please let me know id you need anymore info.
    Cheers,
    Nic

@sanjampet: I have already read the link you provided and none of the solutions work, which is why I posted here.
Safe mode just doesn't activate. I hold shift for as long as possible until eventually I get the prohibited symbol. When I hold shift I see the apple logo and loading icon and then eventually prohibited symbol, its as if I wasn't holding shift at all, which makes me wonder if the shortcut is even correct? And I know its not a problem with my keyboard or my timing of pushing shift because holding alt/option works as usual.
Holding C to load from the installs disc doesn't work either, which eliminates all the solutions based on that. Its the same as safe mode - I hold the button until I eventually get prohibited symbol.
I also tried selecting my Mac hd via holding alt key - same result: prohibited symbol.
I also tried selecting my installs disc via holding alt key and a strange thing happens: I see the apple logo and loading wheel but this time it is stuck on the apple logo and loading spin thing for about 20 minutes while there is lots of noise and activity coming from the CD drive..
I also tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM, which DID seem to have an affect (screen was brighter + startup sound was louder) but I still see the prohibited symbol like all the other times.
I'm yet to be able to get past the prohibited symbol, the only way around it so far is to load the windows partition if my HD.

  • IMac Can No Longer See MBP for File Sharing

    Hello all,
I have had my iMac and MBP set up for ages to see one another and share files. Worked like a charm. Now, all of a sudden, the iMac can no longer see the MBP - but - the MBP CAN see the iMac and connect. Odd??
To my knowledge, nothing has been changed on my end. File Sharing is on. Firewall is off. Both units have the latest updates from Apple and the AEBS has the latest firmware and is working pefectly.
What can I do to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks,
    Stu

    Thanks for the help!
Well, when I rebooted the MBP, it magically appeared on the iMac..so I thought all was well. However, I am now suspicious of the iMac as the culprit.
For example, I have a USB Disk connected to the AEBS - and the iMac is connected to it right now, showing the ddisk icon on the desktop. I can browse the contents.
However, when clicking on Network in the Finder, the AEBS does not appear at all! Even though I am connected to the disk. Why would this be?
I am not against trying your idea - but this new information might point us in another direction?

  • Can't access new MBP from other Macs on my network

I just got a new last-gen MBP running Leopard. All Apple updates are installed. I need to access it from two Macs on my network that are running Tiger (also with all current updates installed). Tiger-to-Tiger connections are running perfectly. And the new Mac accesses the Internet, networked printers and so on just fine.
Problem: While the MBP shows up in the other machines' Network Browser, they can't connect to it. And, while the MBP sees the other machines, all it can connect to is the account Public Folders (the entire volumes are set to share).
The new MBP was populated with data from my old PB G4 using Migration Assistant.
I've never had a problem like this. I've tried disabling the MBP Firewall, rebooting the network, rebooting all of my Macs, but still no luck.
I've searched the Discussions and didn't find any help in previous postings. Hopefully someone can help me now...
    Thank you!

I can connect to any of the Tiger machines from the Leopard machine.
And the Leopard machine shows in each Tiger machine's network browser.
I've rebooted all of the machines at least once and rebooted my router and switch as well.
I've tried connecting to the Leopard machine by specifying its afp address.
None of this works. I guess I'll need to take advantage of my free 90 days of tech support and call Apple. In 20 years of owning Macs, I've never encountered anything like this. I still hope I don't need to reinstall the OS, but I'm getting very worried.
Thanks for all the suggestions; I'll keep checking back and will also post the solution if one is found.
I do not think it's an OS issue. At least one requiring a reinstall.
I just started my other MBP with Tiger. Takes a bit since it's booting via a FW400 pipe.
I will see if I can access this MBP from that one in a few minutes. Never did that - all my systems have been peers. (Booted faster than I expected.)
First I note that this Leopard box does not show up on the Tiger box.
Also "go" and browse does not show this box.
It worked but I had to enter this IP into the "connect to" on Tiger.
    Required login and password.
Connected via afp and a window popped up with the volumes on this box to connect to.
Clicked this user account and there I was.
After that, this box showed up in the Finder sidebar.
So Tiger will connect to a Leopard box, but it seems that one needs to enter the IP of the Leopard box. If that does not work, then something is wrong.
Curiously, that Tiger box has not registered on this Leopard under Places.
Ah, I did not have filesharing on in the Tiger box. Turned it on and I can see it from here.
So I have bilateral network connections: Leopard here <-> Tiger there
Works for me, but that does not help you except to know that it should work.
BTW The Tiger version is 10.4.11.

  • New 5K iMac, Can't access Yahoo Mail!

I just got my 5K Retina iMac today (beautiful by the way), but I am unable to access my email accounts. I have 2 already established email accounts on Yahoo mail, but I can not get the iMac to connect to them. I have tried to connect via System Preferences>Internet Accounts, Via Mail>Add New Account and from the Yahoo website, and none of these would allow me to connect to me email accounts.
    Anyone got any suggestions?
    Specs:
    Yosemite 10.10

  • New iMac can't access remote speakers in iTunes

i use an airport express to play music from eMac to my stereo. This works fine. I just purchased a new iMac. I'm able to turn the Airport On in iTunes, and I can see my remote speakers, but the selection is grayed out. I've tried updating the firmware on the airport express, performing a soft reset, unplugging it, and nothing works. Thanks for your help!!!

Did you ever fix this? I am having the same issue!

  • How can I share the FCPX library so another user on the same iMac can access and edit it?

I need to let another user access our Library file to add some subtitles to a video I'm editing.
This is a breeze with iMovie now, as I moved the Library to the Users/Shared folder and changed permissions so the other user can read+write.
I tried the same with FCPX and then tried to launch FCPX from the other user's profile, but it wouldn't work saying it needs permissions, even though I did the thing with permissions.
After some playing around, I broke it and had to use that Preference File eraser because the Library stopped working even on my account.
Is there a way to ensure the library can be accessed by both of us, on the same iMac? (Note: I was logged out while trying to get the second user to work).

    Thanks.
If it's in the Shared folder, then for whatever reason FCP is busted and won't work?
Have a 1TB Fusion drive, wouldn't this make editing stuff slower if it's an external drive?

  • I have just acquired an iMac desktop. I want to sign on to my airport wireless network, but cannot remember the password. How can I access the password or reset it. I already use a MacBook Pro and an iPad on the network.

I have just acquired an iMac desktop (about 4 years old). I want to connect to my Apple airport wireless network, but cannot remember the password. How can I access the password or, if necessary, reset it. I already use a MacBook Pro and an iPad on the network and don't want to jeopardize what already works well. I am not all that computer literate.

How can I access the password or, if necessary, reset it.
Read the user manual that came w/your Airport router or you can cross-post in one of the  AirPort Forums for instructions.

  • On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it.

    Hello mrmacjohn,
Verifying that any iCloud account that may be signed in is signed out should resolve this error.
On your Mac, open iCloud preferences, then click Sign Out.

  • How can I access the user library of the other users on my iMac?

I am in the process of changing the HDD on my iMac (Seagate 1 TB - free of charge exchange from Apple). As I have had some problems with my kids' user accounts I want to set it all up as new when I get it back.
Challenge is ofcourse that they have played some games and they want to keep their levels etc, and this is stored in their users' Library. How can I access this from my own account or from a back-up? I have both a Time Machine back-up and a CarbonCopyCloner.

Can anyone tell me the cable I need to with the iMac & how to do it. I have music and photos on the iMac I cannot access.
Also, do I need to special CD/DVD external drive/burner to import music CD's into iTunes? I have tried and it keeps coming up with formatting problems.
