24" IMAC Display Too Bright

I am still doing DD on changing from WinTel to Apple. I have viewed both the 20 inch and 24 inch models at a local reseller. I have heard of several complaints that the 24" is too bright. Is there any validity to this complaint? Can the Brightness be easily adjusted? And a third question are there advantages to using a local reseller rather than a purchase directly from Apple re the net?

Hello,
The iMac 24" isn't an iMac (Flat Panel) in Apple's eyes so those of us in this forum won't be nearly so familar with specific issues like the brightness of the display on the 24" iMac. You should re-post your question here.
Of course the local retailer you can speak to face-to-face about your requirements and return it for support in the very unlikely event you have any issues. The online store may well be a very little cheaper and will probably have better build-to-order option.

  • IMac 24" Display too bright

Even after dimming down the brightness of the iMacv 24 inch screen to lowest setting, I still find that its way too bright for my eyes. I have tried to use Shades for Mac OSX and it works fine, however for Windows Vista, I cant find any solution to dim down the brightness without changing my Color profile. Anyone out there can help me with this?

A recent Apple software update for the Alum iMacs may be addressing the brightness issue. In a previous post the following was said regarding the details of what's in the update...
After opening the installer package in "Pacifist" (an installer package viewer /extractor) utility), I >noted that revised ATI drivers (last revisions in iMac Software Update 1.0 a few weeks back) are the >main feature. The GLEngine translate item also updated together with a DisplayProductID-9c6a file.
The above may mean that the ATI HD2600 PRO video card may now run at full specification (a la >Vista)! The display product file may mean improvements to the 20" Al iMac's display..."
And in another post someone was also asking...
anyone notice their brightness lowered recently?
which also referenced this same Apple Update. Please let us know if it helps!

  • Images on imac display too sharp/detailed

I just got my first imac and I've been learing the ins and outs. One thing that bothers me though is that when I'm visiting many web pages I find that images, thumbnails, movie clips, etc. are rendered with so much detail they tend to look distorted. I've been searching for a way to dial down the sharpness overall and I can't seem to make it happen. All I've been able to find are the display settings which jump from 1440x900 (which I'm using now) to 1152x720 (which is muddy and ugly). I enjoy the sharpness and clarity of my monitor when it comes to viewing text but for film clips and jpegs I prefer a softer focus.
Anyone else have this concern? Is there a way to fix it?
    17" imac 2GHz intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Could adjusting the brightness and other settings, perhaps making a
custom profile in displays, changing contrast, etc could help.
The only other mention of displays being too bright and/or clear was
in reference to the new 24" iMac Intel® computer, and some posters
in a forum stated ideas, here: Decrease Brightness Further?
On my older iMacG4 1.25GHz 17" USB 2.0 I chose to adjust down the
brightness (keyboard buttons F14 - F15) to save the display backlight
from premature failure; even while having AppleCare coverage in effect.
To run an LCD or some VGAs too bright can be hard on your eyes when
sitting close and using the computer for longer periods of time.
Hope you find a happy medium and enjoy your new iMac!

  • Is Your Monitor (Especially iMac 24") Too Bright?  Try "Shades" - FREE!

A number of iMac 24" users have complained that the screen can be too bright - even when dimmed the maximum amount.
A comparatively new forum member - tysohsg - posted details (on the iMac forum) of a free program called "Shades" which gives fine tuning right down to complete black.
Having nothing better to do (!!!!!!!!!!), I downloaded and tested it and found that it does everything anyone would desire with no apparent side effects.
It is operated by an inconspicuous slider which can be positioned anywhere on the screen either horizontally or vertically.
Alternatively you can get rid of the on-screen slider and operate it as a menu item - just like the audio volume control.

Mobile Intel series 4 express chipset family MS corp. -WDDM 1.1

funny thing is that the scale which shows on top left corner has like 11 steps but only top 8 works
also the old bottom page brightness scale (15 steps) disappeared.

  • Cinema Display too bright upon waking up

Whenever my cinema display wakes up from sleep, the screen is really bright (ie washed out). It'll stay that way until I open up the Displays control panel, then it will reset to the correct profile. It's not a critical issue but an irritation. Anyone else experiencing this problem/have a solution?

I have the exact same problem on a 30" cinema display. I've tried to adjust color settings in Sys prefs, downloaded DarkAdapted (which works well with the ACD but completely messes with my second display colors apart from being a hassle to launch it every time) and that's all I could do about it so far. Frankly my eyes hurt every night I use it, I even prefer to use only my 15" MBP because I feel it's doing damage to my eyes. This is just ridiculous, it's wonderful to have a bright 2560x1600 screen when you are working open air in a Hawaiian beach but is it so hard to make the screen darker when you are an urban night worker?

  • 24" imac screen too bright!!!

i Turned down the brightness as low as it can go, but it is still the brightess thing i ever saw! and it is hurting my eyes. Is there anything else i can do to stop that bright light from killing my eyes?

Thank you! I got a 24" iMac 2 wks ago and have been suffering eye, neck and back strain ever since. I'll try the above suggestions for the brightness. But the inability to lower the monitor to an ergonomically correct position is a serious oversight on Apple's part. I'm debating taking a saw to my very nice computer desk.

  • Is The 24" iMac Screen Too Bright For Longevity ?

I have just been in an Apple Store testing both the 20" and 24".
I had heard that the 24" screen was brighter but assumed that, like so many claims, it would only be a marginal difference.
I was amazed to see that it was considerably brighter, making the 20" look extremely dull by comparison.
I checked and found that both machines were on maximum brightness. Even set to minimum, the 24" seemed brighter.
I don't know about LCDs but with "normal" electric bulbs, over-running them can give a brilliant but brief life.
Are these new monitors naturally bright or are they being over-run and likely to burn out just after the warranty expires?
    Ian.

I realise we are dealing with a different technology.
Does that mean that the brightness will have no detrimental effect on longevity?
    Ian.

  • PRINTER DISPLAY SCREEN ALMOST COMPLETELY WHITE (TOO BRIGHT/FADED/?)

I cannot read the images on my printer’s display (Product HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-all-in-one printer - N911a). The images are there, but barely discernible. I can't put my finger on whether the screen is too bright or too faint, or the images are too light. The display is NOT blank or black (and the HP Troubleshooting solutions to correct those problems have not corrected my problem, ie Hard Power Reset, updated firmware, and adjusted brightness setting), just too bright or too faint. Even with the screen brightness on the darkest setting, I still cannot make out the images. Interestingly enough, at the end of the day yesterday, the screen self-corrected somehow, and was back to a readable display. However, it reverted back to the problem overnight.

    Hi busymom51 & otcheryl,
I understand that your issue is not the same as the title of the troubleshooting guide listed above: The Touchscreen Does Not Respond, however the troubleshooting steps are the recommended steps to attempt the resolution. If you followed the steps and the issue is not resolved, try again to update the firmware.
If your 8600 is the N911a, try this firmware update: HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911a Firmware. The printer will need to be connected to a Windows computer via USB for the firmware update.
If the 8600 is the N911g or N911n, use this update: HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g_n Firmware. The printer will need to be connected to a Windows computer via USB for the firmware update.
If the firmware update does not help the dim display, contacting HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you would be the best option.

  • 14" imac 1.83GHz LCD screen suddenly too bright

My computer screen is suddenly too bright with a sort of a white washed look. I've checked the display settings and brightness in System Preferences and played with the greyscale and white on black options in the Universal Access panel, all to no avail.
I hooked up an LCD projector and the projected image is perfectly normal while the computer display is impossible to read. Even the most dim setting is too bright. Help!

  • IMac 24" Display VERY BRIGHT!

Okay, I know this is not the first time someone has complained about the monitors being too bright, but here I am. I am a new owner of the 24" iMac, and I love the size, but it's TOO BRIGHT! Is there anything I can do that can lower the brightness lower than what it generally goes? Even with the lowest settings, it's SO BRIGHT!
I have tried SuperCal but it didn't QUITE do the job. I need something to lower the brightness, not modify the colors to make it look that way, or something that will make it look that way as much as possible! I have to wear sunglasses when I'm in front of my Mac! Please help!
    iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB, GeForce 7600GT 256MB

Hey Glor, thanks for the suggestion! I've actually tried looking for those screen tints but I couldn't find a 24" in one ANYWHERE! I was even thinking about calling them and asking them to custom build one for my size!
GMONEY, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I tried finding something like EVERYWHERE but I just couldn't get it! It has saved the strain of my eyes at night, and wearing sunglasses.
One thing though, it doesn't look like it actually drops the brightness by the hardware, but more with the software - where it just changes the gamma or whatever it is over the entire screen. Still does the job! Thanks!

  • Intel 20"iMac screen seems too bright

I just bought a 2Ghz, 2GB Ram, 20" intel iMac. The screen seems to be washed out/too bright even after the brightness is adjusted. Is this a common problem? What is the remedy?

I have the same issue. I do a lot of digital photography and my prints should look close to what I see on the screen. My older eMac and MDD G4 w/ a 20" flat LCD screen gave me excellent results. I was struggling with the color profile on this new iMac (2.4 GHz Intel w/ 20" GLOSSY screen). I got close selecting the Adobe 1998 profile and adjusting the brightness down to about 60%. This helped but I'm not 100% satisfied. I called Apple and one of the tech support engineers suggested I also go into the Universal Access setting and adjust the contrast ever so slightly. Again, this is moving in the right direction and I need to view this setting for a while before I say it's what I'm after. It does help. Also, go to birdphotographers.net and select forum and go all the way to the bottom of the screen, they have a great step wedge to verify you monitor settings, you should see all steps w/o saturation.
    Good luck,
    Rich
b.t.w. disregard my old profile-I'll do an update.

  • Washed out colors - brightness too bright - fix?

    Hello!
Well, I'm currently running a 400 mhz, slot loading, iMac DVSE (spring 2000), equipped with 10.4.8, 512 MB ram, and an 80G hard drive!
However, now that i've upgraded to tiger, and am using this old machine far more, I've noticed that the display looks a bit funky - the colors seem a bit light - particuarly the blacks.
I've used the color calibration app, but although better, the blacks are still way to bright - a sort of dark, charcoal gray. The reason I think it's the brightness is that I have an old CRT attached to my Powerbook that when turned to maximum brightness, has the same gray-blacks. Droping the brightness to around 75% gives the colors their true, deep hues. This is nice, considering my desktop is a rotation of Hubble Space Telescope pics! I have turned down the brightness as far as the displays system pref will allow -but it's too bright.
I know that one of the CRT iMacs has an internal brightness dial somewhere - but I don't remember which model or where it is/how to access. Does anyone know? I'd be a good fix. I'm willing to open up the iMac if neccessary - I need to install a PRAM battery too!
    Thanks,
    -Dan
PS: When attached to the external CRT, the blacks look great - just like on the Powerbook - so it's not an internal video issue with the iMac that I know of.

    Hello!
    Yes - PRAM doesn't help.
PRAM batt is dead, has been for a while. I do need one soon...
I'll try a FW drive boot (has 10.4.7 on it), to see if that helps - but it's been bright like this for quite a while. I never really noticed, because before Tiger, all the iMac was used for was a iTunes and OS 9 games playing, weather radar checking machine. Now I'll do work on it during the day - say, when I'm home between classes and need to work on a lab report, but don't want to unpack my powerbook for just one hour. Not only that, but with these space-desktops, the brightness is just more visible. Hmm.... I wonder if I turned up the gamma to far during calibration.... checks
But the question still stands: is there any sort of internal control for brightness? It may have been the tray-loading iMacs that had that.
    Thanks,
    Dan.

  • Colour Calibration / White Point setting - Is Imac Display really professional quality

I am trying to calibrate my imac 27" using i1 Display2 calibration software. I am trying to set a traget of 6500 using the software but it advises the current is only 5600 and suggests moving the RGB sliders to get this current white point up to my 6500 target. Unfortunatly i have no idea where i find these sliders on my imac. Can anyone advise how i change my current white point to get to the 6500 target?
Also, on the brightness issue, does shades work to reduce my brightness or will it simply interfere with my colour calibration?
Finally, i was going to use my iMac for professional photography. (Mainly on line but some print work required). Honestly, is the iMac display up to the job or should i consider changing
    Thanks
    Gary

Corbybhy, the glossy screen is the biggest and silliest myth out there. Really.
I have been a professional art director & designer for over 26 years, and by the way, for many years my high end professional CRTS were made of glass (and glossy). Another myth is that the screens cannot be calibrated, and are too bright. Hogwash. I use Spyder3Pro and have had few problems, guessing your device will be the same. Actually, the monitors seem to stay consistant for a heck of a lot longer than the old high end CRTs did. In the old days, most professionals calibrated to 5000k, but these days 6500k is the standard.
The amount of MISINFORMATION that is being spewed always amazes me. If you can keep your lighting consistant and somewhat dim, your life will be easier. Reflections are simply not a major issue, and are also overblown as a issue (by the way, my iMac sits next to a window, I just use shades to dim the ambient light).
I work mostly in print, and produce mostly publications, advertising & marketing materials. I have ZERO issues with my screen matching my proofs. ZERO. I do a huge amount of imaging, retouching & post-processing... all from my 27" iMac.
