24" iMac early 2009 - how to duplicate screen (mini DP to HDMI)?

Hello
I want to play movies on my TV which are located on this harddrive.
I have a PS3 so when i have software streaming that movies (uPnP style) to my PS3 it works. But then again, considering I like nature and all, I have to use 3 devices for getting that image through.
It would be far easier to just connect the mac to my TV using HDMI.
I know this is possible with a mini DP to HDMI cable. But does this iMac (early 2009) support audio streaming? I've read numerous of forums and they all have different answers. I know this forum is the right one to ask.
But if it doesn't support audio, then i'll need a devide which combines the mini DP and audio jack into a a hdmi output. This isn't such a problem I think except ...
If this audio jack is plugged in my iMac, won't I'll always loose the sound of my iMac (but I'll have that on my TV)? This bother me because I don't want to insert the audio jack every time I want to play a movie on my TV. But when the HDMI side is not connected to my TV, will my Imac still loose its audio?
It seems complex, but I just need a solution for watching those movies easily on my telly without having to switch cables all the time (and not use the PS3 which consumes power like a mad machine).
I'd like to know your input on this.
Thanks in advanced

The mini-DisplayPort does not carry audio. You can solve that issue with a device such as this one available in the USA. I do not know where you would find one in Europe.
However, as long as something is plugged into the Mac's audio port, that is normally where the audio goes. So if your TV is plugged into the audio port and the TV is off, your Mac will be silent.

  • Using a iMac, early 2009 as a monitor for a new macbook pro?

    Hi,
I bought a new macbook pro 17 inch, and I have an iMac 24-inch, Early 2009, how do I use the iMac as a monitor?
    What cables should I buy?
    Thank you
    osmane

You don't. Only the 27" iMac can be used as an external monitor, unless you install something like ScreenRecycler:
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/ScreenRecycler.html
Note that performance of the iMac-as-external-monitor will be slow using ScreenRecycler.

  • Kernel panic - iMac Early 2009 - OS 10.9.5

My iMac Early 2009 computer has been shutting down in different ways during different programs, usually graphics oriented.  Usually it freezes the display or some part of the display, becomes very very slow and then maybe I can wait and save work before restarting, maybe not--it's just frozen.  I was watching a video in Chrome just now and it completely shut down and restarted.  This is the first time this has happened--complete shut down.  I wonder if anyone can interpret the shut down log.
    Specs are as follows:
    iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-Inch Aluminum (Early 2009) (E8435)
6 MB shared level 2 cache
    1066 MHz system bus
    8GB of RAM (1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM)
    1 TB (7200 RPM)
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 graphics - 512 MB GDDR3
Log of the shut down follows.  Thank you very much in advance if anyone has any idea what is wrong.

Thanks Mike.  I have no third party peripherals, but I did install ram, so I'll take that out.  I'm unable to install the Apple Hardware Test (holding D down doesn't work for me and I don't have the install disks that came with the computer anymore.)  I think it is a hardware problem though, due to it happening during lots of different programs running etc.  I'm guessing it is GPU related as well, because it says

From research I've done online, I gather replacing the video card will be half as expensive as buying a new computer, so I'm in a jam there.  The iMac screen display is also quite old  -- it has a yellowish color now and often  on the desktop you can "see through" windows "on top": you can see the outlines of windows below.

  • IMAC early 2009 2GB RAM, 2.66ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Im currently running Snow LEopard 10.6

So I have an iMAC early 2009 2GB RAM, 2.66ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Im currently running Snow LEopard 10.6 & I tried upgrading to Yosemite 10.10 today and right before it finishes it cancels download and says unable to download application "NSInternalInconsistentexception" ??? how do i fix this

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • Adobe CS6.0 out of memory error on iMac (early 2009)

    Hi:
Adobe CS6.0 Photoshop is returning "Out of Memory (RAM)" errors and is unusable on a lab of iMacs.
The system exceeds Adobe minimum specs (1GB ram).
Our school has a lab of computers with both Adobe CS5.5 and Adobe CS6.0 Master Collection installed on a lab of iMacs (early 2009).
The computers all have 4GB of memory and come with an NVidia GeForce 9400M 256MB video card.
I notice that this video card shares ram with the main system.
CS5.5 runs perfectly well but CS6.0 is not co-operating.
We have updated Photoshop to version 13.04 and have run Apple's Software Update (latest version).
I have looked online and this is a known problem with computers that have Adobe CS5 & 6 installed with Mac OS10.7.x but only on certain video cards.
There are people out there with 32 GB ram having the same problem.
I'm guessing the answer may be to update the video card drivers somehow.
    Your input is greatly appreciated.

    Hi ODrew,
I'm shocked you can operate OK with only 4GB of RAM, that certainly wasn't enough for my 2007 iMac to not continually slow down!?
    CS6 Sys requiremnts...
    Mac OS
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
    Mac OS X v10.6.8, v10.7, or v10.8**

    Hello,
I've just installed LION and everthing seems to be OK except the microphone, it doesn't work on skype, imovie.
I have an Imac early 2009.
Will this bug be fixed in the next 10.7.1?
Please if you can help me,
    Thanks

If it suggests that you install iPhoto again, install iPhoto again. In your Macs Box that it came in there should be 2 Discs, one is an Applications CD (You need this one) And another is the Mac OS X.
Insert your Applications CD and hold C while the computer is starting up, then you will be walked through the installation of Applications.

  • First is it possible to connect my imac eaRLY 2009 as display for my macbook white 2010?

first is it possible to connect my imac eaRLY 2009 as display for my macbook white 2010? If so what exact cables on the market do i need to purchase to make this work? Please help me out. I cannot afford to buy a new mac so temporarily this is my only solution.
Thanks to all my Mac buddies for your assistance

    The Early2009 20" or 24" iMac don't have any video-in capabilities.
Depending on your needs, you can investigate or tryout AirDisplay or ScreenRecycler which enable use of a Mac from another Mac or Windows PC through network/wireless connections.

  • Will my US iMac early 2009 work in South Africa?

I am moving. I know that mobile and portable devices will work, but will a desktop? I do not see voltage guidance on the iMac casing.

Yes they are also 100-240V AC, see >  iMac (Early 2009) - Technical Specifications
However you may need to find a power cord with the correct plug end or a plug adapter depending on the outlet configuration there.

  • Screen issue imac early 2009

    Hello,
I have recently performed the upgrade of my early 2009 20 inch imac optical drive with an SSD from OWC.
Everything worked flawlesly regarding the OS installation and boot.
However, since opening the imac I got a very annoying issue with the screen:
The screen has a washed out color as if there was a white or grey film on the screen (almost not readable) with very much electric noise and flicker, visible on the desktop pattern.
I initially had Snow Leopard installed, and with that OSX the screen was problematic after booting up, but return to normal (high contrast & resolution) after putting the mac to sleep mode and immediately waking up. I consequently upgraded to Mavericks OSX and now the screen always has the above issue making it impossible to use.
It is not the GPU as I have connected an external screen and it worked flawlesly, but the iMac screen itself. Do you have any possible hint about resolving this problem? I have plugged and unplugged the inverters a thousand times since yesterday but with no success.
Everything appears as if there were a bad contact somewhere generating noise.
Could you please help me resolve the problem?
It is not related to the SSD either, I have tested the screen with and without the SSD connected but the issue remains.
    Thank you in advance.
