24" iMac - fan comes on, Mac won't sleep

Sometimes when I try to "sleep" my Mac, the fan comes on, the screen blanks, and then immediately it comes to life. Other times the fan comes on, even though I don't think it's overheating, and then maybe I can sleep it, and maybe I can't.
Anyone else seen this problem? It's not the end of the world, but it's pretty annoying!!

I spent 25 minutes on the phone with AppleCare and we did a lot of things like resetting the PMU, the PRAM, reparing the hard drive, trying to do the same with another user account. It turns out it's a hardware problem and I need to send the computer to a service center...
Basically: no solution we can find on our own.
My iMac is 20 days old so that makes me quite unhappy...

found an answer that could have been problem with CPU and a runaway application (possibly Bin Weevils) which my son was running at the time. I shall check the activity monitor next time to see what percentage cpu is being used..

Mac won't sleep - Reason?

I am trying to figure out why my mac won't sleep.
I have run this command in the teminal (pmset -g assertions) and this is what I get back. If anyone can let me know what the problem is I would appreciate it. I have disconnected everything from the machine such as firewire, usb cables etc. But the computer will not sleep on its own. It does when I initiate it but not by the automatic function in energy saver pref pane.

If it is'nt the card, this may help;
If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following lines:
reset-nvram
press Return on keyboard
set-defaults
press Return
reset-all
press Return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still did'nt work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.

Insomnia - - My Mac won't SLEEP

Hi folks,
I just re-installed OS 10.5.4, ... and began to have a couple buggy behaviours:
Primarily, my computer won't respond when I try to put it in SLEEP mode.
Also, there is a funky little 1/4" square that appears in every window that opens. Clicking & dragging over it makes it go away, but it then reappears on the next open window.
p.s. In an attempt to 'fix' these anomolies, I downloaded the upgrade to 10.5.8 but this didn't help.
Any ideas ????? (This is my second post... with no responses).

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple's KB article HT1776 with their tips.
Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.

By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.

tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
Check the printer queue!"
Allan Jones says "sometimes there is Network activity: launch System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Options" tab and uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."

Mac won't sleep after adding Kensington Wireless Mouse

I've added a Kensington PilotMouse Laser Wireless to my system and now it won't sleep, without first switching off the mouse. Kensington has no info on this, is there a workaround?

The "sleep" that you describe is not sleep. Your mac has crashed but since it thinks it is sleeping there is nothing in the crash logs.
Sleep on modern computers is not just a hardware shutdown. Because X and XP are server based kernels they are designed to run 24/7 and do what they can to keep it that way. Deep sleep requires an orderly shut down of processes and loading their status into memory so that when it wakes, all is as it was.
There are many things that can prevent sleep. Usb devices are designed to wake a mac on a change of state (doing something). When my mac did what yours did the only fix for it was an erase and install. I tried all the other solutions but the only one that worked was an erase and install.
If you care to try some of the "fixes" then here are some.
Reset the pmu.

• Trash all caches (system and user)
• Mac OS X power management is sensitive to malfunctions in USB devices.
Remove USB peripherals, one at a time
• Mac will not sleep if Applications/processes continuously writing to the Console logs.
Launch Console in Applications/Utilities and check both the console.log and system.log logs for blocks of recurring messages written therein that repeat at high frequency.
Note: the console.log file should open by default when you launch Console.
• Quit System Preferences.... Navigate to ....
/Library/Preferences and delete.....com.apple.AutoWake.plist
Enter your Admin password, when prompted.
•If this does not solve the problem, your Energy Saver preferences may be corrupt.
Navigate to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration (folder) and delete.
com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
com.apple.AutoWake.plist
Enter your Admin password, when prompted.
• and finally....
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/ and delete......
com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

Mac won't sleep from hotkey

When I use the cmd-option-eject hotkey to put my Mac Mini to sleep, it wakes up after a couple seconds. I figured there was some piece of software waking the machine, but then I realized I can make the computer sleep from the Apple menu and it doesn't do this.
Not a major issue or anything, but a slight annoyance. Does anyone know anything about this problem?

There are at least two other recent topics in this forum which point to the recent Security Update as being the cause of all sorts of trouble. One of the threads is mine (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1752919&tstart=0) - I can't even boot up from my HDD any more. Someone in another thread said that after a conversation with Apple, an 'Archive and Install' was necessary.
I have looked up this KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US and am now performing an Archive and Install on my iMac.
I am seriously unimpressed at Apple over this. I am anticipating having to spend my evening reinstalling the various applications and settings that will doubtless have been busted as a result of having to reinstall Mac OSX. I have better things to do with my time than to tidy up after a company that should be able to release security updates that have been fully tested and are guaranteed not to break their customers' equipement.

Mac won't sleep unless Magic Mouse off

Since getting a Magic Mouse a few days ago I've noticed that my Mac will no longer sleep unless I turn the mouse completely off.
If I put the Mac to sleep it wakes again within a few seconds. At the moment I'm having to sleep the Mac and quickly turn off the mouse before it wakes the Mac.
Is this normal? Have a missed a preference that will prevent this from happening?

I have the same problem. I have a three month old iMac and bought a Magic Mouse last week. Since then iMac 'mostly' won't sleep (it will sometimes). At first I thought it was Safari with the new mouse, as closing Safari allowed the iMac to Sleep but now I think it is just the mouse.
I phoned Apple they said uncheck "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep.." in the energy saving preferences but that didn't work. They also said to delete the energy saving settings file from the system library folder but that didn't work.
I am resorting to turning the mouse off now when I am done which is rubbish as it takes ages to reconnect when I want to use the iMac again.
if I plug in my old mouse there are no issues at all. I test sleeping by selectig apple->sleep with the Magic Mouse connected it sleeps and the immediately wakes up again. I've tried changing all the enegry saving preferences with no effect.

HT1776 Mac won't sleep automatically

Despite attending to all of the issues mentioned in this article, my machine won't sleep automatically. However, I've found that using SleepNow (http://www.dragonone.com/products/macosx/pleasesleep/) works like a charm. Apple should do something similar.

Wow thank you. I have been struggling with my macbook for about a year with this issue. Even after complete reinstall of the system, on new hard drives etc. nothing seemed to work. It drove me nuts coming back to my computer 2 hours later to find it completely dead because the computer would. not. sleep. ever!

IMac fan got real loud - won't boot on disk

When I turned on iMac 2.66 GHz i5 the fan was on high very loud. It is blowing out the bottom and top. When I run disk utility it says the disk is corrupt, but it will not mount on the start-up disk. I ran the hardware disk and it says it's ok, even on extended test. Any ideas?

If the machine is still covered by warranty (1 year from purchase) or if you have AppleCare contact Apple and make an appointment to have the HD replaced as it looks like it has crashed. If you have AppleCare simply call Apple and they will try give you hand. If you don' then you will need to make an appointment with your local Apple Store or AAST to have it serviced.

Imac 27 runs hot as ****, won't sleep, and cpu runs wild in w7

I have been having audio issues with the imac 27. plugging headphones or speakers causes cpu to run crazy, the mic in the triband trrs jack does not work, and the imac runs hot, and will not go into power saver mode.
When I came in I found my nephew who was listening to some music on the imac, and I felt the back top of the imac and it was hot as ****. I almost burned my hand. I realized then that he had plugged his headphones in.
Unplugging the headphones or speakers can solve some of these problems.
But, this is not an acceptable fix.
Please contact Apple and urge them to fix these sound card issues.
If anyone does not have these problems in w7 with the imac 27 even after the latest bootcamp and imac updates, let us know right here. I think this affects every one of the late 2009 imacs and maybe some earlier ones too running windows 7.
Here's the post I recently ran on the headphone jack issue.
Not only does the cpu run crazy but the imac 27 gets very, very hot. Since I unplugged the headphones, it runs much, much cooler.
Certainly, some Mac engineers should take care of this problem, it seems it is universal on all the imac 27's and from what I gather, the smaller screened cousins too.
Also, we certainly want a stereo mix option for audio in or out, or what is called "what you hear" or wave out. Imac is supposed to be much geared to multimedia apps.
Finally, the mic jack part of the trrs set up MUST be fixed! A lot of manufacturers are going to headset combo jacks as they call them, mic in and stereo out on the same tribanded plug. But, the old single jack for mic in and single jack for stereo out are two tiny parts of the hardware and super inexpensive for the manufacturer. Why in the **** to go to the "advanced" triplug if the **** thing doesn't work.
Mac has a great reputation. I hope they remedy these problems right away.
Anyone whose imac 27 or 24 whose headset plug is working correctly. Let us know! I don't think anyone's is, but I think that few people understand that their cpu is running so much faster with the plug in, plus few even understand the combo jack and the triband, or trrs audio jack! Out of 4 audio technicians I talked to, not one of them knew what a trrs jack was or that you even have a mic in jack as part of the headset jack!
When I told one senior that it worked on the Mac side, he didn't believe for a while, thought my sound might be recorded from the onboard mic, but I proved it to him by tapping iaudibly on my iphone mic headset and and it showing up in garage band clearly and listening to big difference in audio.
As for a usb audio adapter, I am in a neon light environment and find that those adapters are more sensitive to electrical interference. Besides I want to use the headset jack as it was meant to be used!

Again, if anyone using an imac 27 and windows 7 64 or 32 doesnt have these problems, let us know! We are all anxious for a fix!

Yes, I have been dealing with this problem since early January. I just can't believe that apple would not have the necessary driver for the sound card in the Imac 27! That's like trying to run a race and not bothering to tie your shoes! How can they not have something as basic as the sound connections working???
I was encouraged to buy a top of the line imac 27 because Apple had told us that bootcamp would enable Windows users to use the machine just as if it were a native windows machine, then they don't give us the **** drivers to use the trrs mic jack. And you can't use the external speakers without the cpu going wild and heating up like a pot bellied stove.
This is really disheartening and now I am really thinking I made a big mistake. I wouldn't mind migrating to Mac gradually, but I have lot of scientific and other programs that require windows. At this rate there will be thousands of other mac buyers who will never make the same mistake again.
As you can see I am quite angry about this, and getting more angry with each day Apple ignores every imac purchaser who expected to use Windows on the machine! Is the software for a sound card driver that difficult?
Having a computer which doesn't have sound that works correctly, is like having a car without seat, you can still drive it but isn't very **** comfortable.

And display keeps dipping to blue every so often.
Display preferences shows a second display preferences window for a VGA monitor, even though I do not have any secondary monitor attached.I can't put my machine to sleep because it keeps dipping to blue as if it's trying to access this mystery display. When using, every three minutes or so will dip to same blue background and resume after a couple of seconds. Have reset pram, repaired disk permissions.

Did you restart your computer after repairing permissions?
Try this:
Change the energy saving options, to put the display to sleep and the computer to sleep at the same time.
Enable (check mark) put the hard disk to sleep when possible.
Lock the padlock.
Optional: Repair permissions &/or restart.

See if you can put your computer to sleep w/your remote.

After Lion install, Mac won't sleep (no pulsing sleep light)? This worked for me!

I know there are a plethora of suggestions out there as to how to correct the no sleep light issue since installing Lion. I tried every single one of them-- PRAM and SMC resets, looking for "little snitch" and other apps, and even trashing a preferences folder. None of them worked for me.
This is what did work. APPLE! Listen up!
1. Unplug the magsafe power cord from the computer now or in step 3.
2. Close lid to laptop.
3. Unplug magsafe power cord.
4. Wait a few seconds.
5. Watch as the sleep light begins to pulsate.
6. You can now reattach the magsafe power cord, if you'd like. It doesn't affect sleep mode for me.
After doing this, I open the lid to my MacBook and it's like old times. It takes the display a second or two to come on as it wakes from sleep. It's exactly how it should be.
I hope this helps for most if not all of you, and I hope that Apple quickly determines how to fix this problem with Lion.

Yup, pmset -g assertions will let you know what's preventing your computer from sleeping.
As for AC vs battery, there are 3 profiles for sleep conditions - AC, battery, UPS. Use the "man pmset" command to see more details. Depending on which profile is active, different conditions may or may not prevent system sleep.
I also made a small app to help with diagnosing the problem, if anyone is interested. Source code is provided. If you don't trust it, just use "pmset -g assertions".
Hope Apple fixes it soon.

Mac won't sleep when shut

Hey, I just noticed today that my computer is no longer going to sleep when I shut the screen, so the Apple light stays on and presumably power is still being used. When I open it up, the screen is right where I left it, already on, not waking up from a black screen. Is this a magnet problem or a setting issue? Is it resolvable?? Thanks!

I'm guessing from the lack of replies that this is a problem best solved with a trek to the Genius Bar....ah well.

Mac won't sleep

I set up one of the Hot Corners to Sleep the Display. When I put the cursor in the corner the screen go black for only a second then goes back on.
Also if I put the computer to sleep after about a minute it goes back on.
I have try setting up a new user account to see if the problems persist and it does.
Any ideas?

Are you using Bluetooth peripherals like mouse and keyboard? How about errant USB devices? Try unplugging things from the USB ports.
You can also have a look at the Console logs (Applications/Utilities/Console). They will usually show an entry for the wake event and that should point a finger at the culprit.
