24" iMac glass permanently damaged by condensation

I have a 24" iMac purchased in August of 2007. In 2008, I left the computer off for a few days while I was on vacation. When I turned the computer on there was a large amount of condensation on the inside of the screen. Just as I started to panic, it burned off and only left some small marks. Because the marks were small and I live in Macau (where there is no Apple service) I decided to just live with it.
Over the past two years the markings have started to grow and now cover about 60% of the screen. It's hard to describe the marks. They're long diagonal grayish lines. Because they appear to have some kind of shadowing going on, I think they're on the glass and not the actual LCD screen.
I have uploaded an image which can be seen here: http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/8754/dsc02127.jpg
I would like to know what kind of DIY options I may have. I've read some other threads saying the glass can be taken off with suction cups but I'm not sure what to do after that. Should I leave the glass off? Can I clean the glass and re-install it? Is there a way to order and install new glass? Or should I avoid removing the glass and try something else altogether?

There is a video on the MacOSG YouTube channel that will show you how to remove and replace the iMac screen. Look for the "How to install a hard drive in an aluminum iMac" video.

seems to have happned very suddenly.

I've had my 24" iMac for about 4 years now and yesterday was the first time I ever saw condensation building up in the lower right corner.  I completely freaked out, but after doing some online research, found that it wasn't uncommon to have this happen.  I live in Florida and we had a lot of rain that day and the temperature has been whacky... But I never thought I'd ever see condensation in my computer! )c:  I shut my computer down while freaking out and the condensation quickly disappeared.  I read some people are just leaving the computer on and it will also disappear.  I didn't want to take the chance of it getting worse, so I turned it off.  I'm kind of worried about turning it back on again.  Has anyone found anything else out about the problem?

  • What is best to wash/clean iMac glass screen cover?

I have used Glass Cleaner to clean smudges/finger prints off my iMac glass screen cover.  I keep getting swipe marks instead of a sparkeling clean screen.  Anybody have a better product?

Water only applied to a damp cloth per your owner's manual:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1662/en_US/imac_late2013_ipig.pdf
(I use a micro-fiber cloth slightly dampened with water on my iMac with streak-free results)

  • Imac glass broken

Is it possible to replace the glass on an Imac?

Yes, take it to an Apple Store. Note that if this is accidental damage it is not covered by AppleCare.

  • My imac took some damage while being repair at the Apple Store

I figured I'd post here since I'm not exactly sure where this would fall under.
Two days ago my imac started having Hard Drive problems. After doing everything I could possibly do to recover what I could (which wasn't much) I took it in to the Apple Store to Diagnosed and Fix. The Mac Genius came to the same conclusion as I about the state of the Hard Drive and was even able to help me get more stuff off of it. This morning I went back to pick it up and had a mac genius boot it up and check it out. Functionally everything is working great with the imac now. It has a new HD and the machine as a whole seems to be running faster and cooler now BUT...
On the aluminum case on the top left-hand side are three sharp serrated notches in the casing. It almost looks like someone stabbed the top of the case with a screw driver or something similar. I know for a fact they weren't there before because at least once a day I run my hand across the outer edge of the case to sweep up any dust that might be building out around the memory ports, disc drive bay and above the isight (it's more of a habit then anything).
I'm just not sure what to do about it. Looking at the repair report papers they listed the condition of my imac as "normal wear and tear" even though it was in fact in pristine condition (I'm a bit OCD where it concerns my computers). So if I were to take it back, it might be their word against mine.
I'm just so frustrated at this point. It's like taking your car in to have an alternator changed and then getting your car back in perfect running order only to find that they dented it in three places. Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated

Living in New York I've visited all three now actually four stores many times and must say my experience has always been a positive one. I find most of the people knowledgeable and if not theres usually someone there that knows the answer to your problem. I had a problem with a skipping iPhone and I went to the store multiple times and what was a simple solution was overlooked and wrongly diagnosed by numerous people. That happens with many complex products. Luckily I figured it myself but then again I might know more then most at the store.
As for a damaged computer during repair. I guess anything can happen once something leaves your premises. I would for one always ask to boot up any machine I've had in for repair before I lug it home and look over the machine's surface for damage. The stores are very bright and you should be able to easily see any damage. Hope Apple does the right thing which they usually do. Recommend the manager route if not.

  • Monitor Mirroring - iMac 24 with damaged LCD screen

My iMac 24 LCD screen is damaged to the point where it is basically worthless. I have attached an external monitor via a VGA adaptor. Problem...since I cannot see the screen, I cannot get into system preferences to select "detect displays". Is there any way for the computer to detect the external monitor automatically? Or other suggestions. Thanks.

  • 24" iMac glass, is it all the same?

I have been looking into ordering a replacement glass panel for my 24" early 2009 iMac. I have noticed that most of the vendors selling the glass list it as being compatible with Mid 2007 & Early 2008. Glass listed as being specifically for the Early 2009 seems to be much less plentiful and somewhat more expensive. Just based on what I see in the pictures, all the glass seems to be the same, as far as pin location is concerned. So, would I be okay ordering any 24" glass?

    Hi juggalette8!
Actually, probably the best thing to do in this kind of situation would be to just download the latest version of iTunes (7.1.1), and not stay at a previous version (like 4.7), which requires a standalone iPod Updater to be installed, as well.
With iTunes 7, you don't need a separate iPod Updater anymore - the restoring and iPod-firmware-updating features are now integrated right into iTunes, with no need for anything else.
To download the latest version of iTunes, go here:

  • Your EarPods Have Permanently Damaged My iPod's Screen.

As most of you know, iDevice earphones tend to tangle if not wrapped around something.
In my case, I keep my headphones wrapped around my new iPod Touch 5.
After only a couple of days, the cord has left permanent markings on the screen that show up when I drag my finger across it.
I bought this refurbished, if that matters, and I've been carrying it in my pocket with the original EarPods wrapped around it.
I upgraded to this from an iPod Touch 4, and it never had this problem.
I've tried everything short of taking sandpaper and hydrochloric acid to the screen, and those marks just won't go away. They even repel water when I try to wipe it clean.
And if I can't find a solution to this, then you'll get to watch another loyal customer switch over to Android.

This is an iPod 5? when you remove the case is the image etched into the glass of the iPod or just on the plastic of the case's screen protector? If it's just the case throw it away and get a new one or if want to... try a polymer based polishing compound on the case NOT your iPod may remove the image, just remove the iPod from the case first. If it's on the glass then you somehow etched the glass with and image of your iPod earphones. Some type of electronics glass cleaner, like the Monster cleaner suggested by deggie may remove it, but I don't know, definitely DO NOT USE SANDPAPER  or HYDROCHLORIC ACID!!! I hope you're just joking. If it were just a pane of glass I would use a two part glass polishing compound, but that requires lots of water and elbow grease, not a good idea on an iPod. If it's on the glass try the cleaner, sparingly, if no joy contact Apple Genius Bar set up an appointment to have it evaluated, maybe a warranty issue, maybe not. Whatever course of action you take find somewhere else to store your earbuds. Food for thought... this could have happened with any device not just Apple. Good luck, hope it's just the case and the cleaner works.

  • IMac has a damaged screen

I have a damaged iMac (intel), and I want to mirror displays so I can see if the computer is working properly and worth repairing.
The iMac screen is badly damaged and I can't see any of the task bar at all, but the voice command is operatig and I can hover over the task bar. I try to select the apple icon and try to get into the System Preferences to open the screenshot to drag it across to the external display, so I can mirror them. Any suggestions and tips would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Hi BDAqua,Thank you for your quick reply!, I have managed to mirror the displays YAY! God only knows how I managed it eh! If I Safe Boot from the HD will it not change the mirror setting back to the original setting?

  • Cc won't install on imac, says its damaged and to download and reinstall. tried that and can't get it to install, any ideas?

Bought a new 27" mac and did a data migration from the old mac. The creative cloud app will not install as it says its damaged, and prompts to download it. Every time i try to install it crashes and says cc is needed for this problem, and i go round in circles....Any ideas please?

Please try to download it by enabling the root user:

  • New iMac crashes permanently - bluetooth problem?

    Hi all,
my new iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) is constantly crashing, especially after the execution of a particular gesture on the Magic Trackpad. The crash after moving the scroll wheel on a wired Apple mouse has so far occurred only once. • Dead iMac? Storm damage?

We have an iMac, about 5 years old. There were a few instances where we had to unplug it and hit the start button in order for it to start; then at some point the our power went out while it was on. Since then it is "dead." No matter what we do the computer is unresponsive to our attempts to turn it on? Is there a fuse, and if so how to we find it and replace it? Any other ideas? Solutions? Thanks
    iMac G3   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

Thank you. However, what we have is a slot loader. We did see what seems to be a grey circular button, and tried it by pressing a few times, but nothing happened.
With regard to the paper clip suggestion, there is no hole on our machine.
I just posted a reply to another thread. So if you
don't mind, please see if this is applicable.

As noted, the advice is for "tray-loader" iMacs. The
later "slot-loaders" probably have the same type of
button or switch, but I'm not familiar with it. If
yours is a slot-loader, please post back.

  • Turning off iMac screen permanently

How can I stop the screen on my iMac from coming on when I log in via logmein? Logging in at night lights the whole house up and frightens the **** out of everyone! Dimming the display only works to a point.

There is a free app called shades, one of the settings in there is total black, whilst the backlight will still come on there is no picture so you'd probably not notice it.

  • IMac 21,5"  damaging original audio cd's

received my new iMac yesterday and it is working fine. But today I put a brand new original (no copy) audio cd in it and when I ejected it it had all scratches on the topside (the artwork/cd cover on top). Looked liked it had been cut by a knife. Is that normal? I do not think so.
