24" iMac having turning on difficulties

So just recently my iMac has been playing up a bit when I go to turn it on. Usually just a simple press of the power button will switch it on but lately it just begins to start up for a couple of seconds then just shuts straight back down and won't start up again. I have to unplug it from the power source, plug it back in then hold down the power button until the 'on' light starts flashing it then makes a long and loud beep noise and continues to start up as normal. Everything else seems to be working fine it's just a bit annoying having to hear that loud beep noise every time I switch it on and I'm so used to just pushing it I always have to unplug it and start again. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I couldn't find any relative discussions but any tips are appreciated =]

There was only about 5GB free but I've deleted stuff since then so now it's got 15GB free, they recommend 30 so I've been trying to sift through everything and get rid of what I don't need but I'm such a hoarder and it's pretty unorganised. Sorry they did say Internal HDD space and not memory.

  • Well-used iMac suddenly turning off

My not-so-new 20" iMac is turning off on me. I have used this computer, many hours a day, for several years now. For the past 20 months, I've lived in an apartment with old outlets that haven't been replaced, and don't have great contact with the electrical plugs. I've been using a power strip, and the computer only turned off when someone knocked the plug out of the outlet or bumped "reset" on the power strip.
Starting yesterday, my computer started turning itself off (apparent power failure) without anything getting bumped. I'm not seeing any changes in the lights around, me, either, so I don't think that power fluctuations are the proximate cause. I've fiddled with all of the pulgs, unplugged and replugged them, and the problem is getting worse: my computer is shutting off more often. I'm using my spouse's laptop to ask this question, because it's gotten to the point where my comptuer really isn't useable. I've gotten great advice from these forums before, and I'm looking forward to getting good advice this time.
Could a power regulating power strip solve my problems? I'm guessing no, but should I do this in the future, to prevent damage to my computer? More importantly, what is likely wrong with my computer, and about how much would it cost for me to replace the part, or get it fixed at the Apple store? I did not purchase any extended warranties, so this computer is completely out of warranty.

It's been a month since I first posted, and I've got more clues and details now. After I posted my question I realized that my computer is and has been on a surge protector (and the protector light is light), so on later reflection I don't think the problem is the steadines of the power.
den.thed's suggestion seemed to work at first, although I think the longest my computer has gone without shutting down in the last month was about a week, and at this point resetting the SMC doesn't seem to be helping (not that I've turned the computer back on without unplugging it, so I haven't tested this precisely).
I leave my computer on at night (sometimes I put it to sleep, sometimes it puts itself to sleep, but sometimes something happens and the computer doesn't put itself to sleep, or my cats step on the keyboard and wake it up), and it has not shut down at night. It only shuts down when I'm sitting in front of the computer, using it. This made me think I might be having a software problem, so I tried avoiding using specific programs, but I can't isolate a specific program that is always open or always being used when my computer shuts itself down. I think my computer has only shut down while I'm typing, but I'm not certain on that one. I'm using a logitech wireless keyboard (because I spilled water on and destroyed the original keyboard), and (because I only have the one keyboard at the moment) I haven't tried using another keyboard.
Last night I had the realization that the times my computer was going longer without shutting down was when I'd unplugged my backup HD running Time Machine (because of the limited number of USB connections on the computer).  I am not certain if my computer has ever shut itself down with the external HD attached. I have had successful saves to Time Machine on my external HD while dealing with this problem.
But these two clues: maybe shutting down only when external HD is plugged in, and definitely only shutting down when when I'm sitting at the computer, actively using it, don't seem to me to point to the same problem.

  • IMac display turns off but computer doesn't sleep.

After upgrading to Mavericks I've noticed a problem where my iMac display will turn off but the computer will never enter into actuall sleep mode, I know this because I can constantly hear the fan humming. I have the Energy Saver settings set to sleep the display after 10 minutes and sleep the computer after 15 minutes. However even well after 15 minutes of inactivity (and the display long having turned off) I can still hear that the computer is not sleeping due to the fans still being on.
I decided the troubleshoot the problem using a Terminal command and I was able to narrow it down to single potential cause. According to "PreventUserIdleSystemSleep" the problem stems from a "URLConnection in progress" issue. How does one go about determining what is causing the URL Connection so I can kill the prompt and see if that solves the sleeping issue?
Here's a screen shot of the Terminal output:
Also, if I choose "sleep" from the Apple Menu, the iMac will go to sleep as normal (fans and harddrive sleep).

No, I do not mean just the music.  Copying just the media/music files or the media folder creates problems.

  • My imac wont turn on anymore. it only shows a picture of a folder and question mark

I cant get my imac to turn on. It will only show a folder with a question mark in it,.

Your Mac can't find any bootable device. That could be because of two things:
    1. The PRAM "forgot" the startup disk.
    2. The hard disk is damaged.
First, press Option key while your Mac is starting and check if you see the OS X partition. If you see it, choose it and when OS X has booted up, open System Preferences > Startup Disk and select the OS X partition.
If not, the hard disk is damaged. If you have OS X Lion as you indicate, press Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into Recovery. Then, open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair the disk. If it doesn't work, take the Mac to an Apple Store.
If you didn't make a backup, use DiskWarrior to recover your files. It could not work on some ocassions.
Also, there's a problem with the 1 TB Seagate iMacs hard disks sold between October 2009 and July 2011 and they are being replaced for free. Check if you can get replaced the hard disk for free > http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive

  • Imac keeps turning itself off

imac 20" intel core duo, 2G running leopard 10.5.8
imac will turn off randomly and won't start again unless its left for a while, it's no getting hot (that I can detect)
So far I have reset the SMC
run the AHT which came up with nothing
    tried another power lead
tried it in different power outlets
    Any clues people?
    thanx in advance!

i'm guessing a faulty power supply as the likely problem.
i had an iMac 20", although not an Intel (mine was the last of the G5 processors, yours might be the first of the iMac Intel machines?).  it had the same problems as you've been experiencing, which were caused by a power supply problem. it was replaced by Apple; even though i had AppleCare, Apple had a special extended replacement program in place for faulty power supply boards installed on that particular machine.  the replacement power supply failed again a few years later, exact same symptoms.  that time it cost about $150 or so.
    good luck.

  • My imac G5 turns off on mi then dont want to turn back on at all but after one day turns on mormaly then turns back off again

my imac G5 turns off on mi and dont want to turn back on at all but nex day tuns on normaly then tuns back off again

It could be several possible issues.
    1)  Your G5 iMac could be overheating.  Depending on which model, you might be able to open the back by yourself (not on an iSight model), and using a can of compressed air, youcould blow the dust out of it.
    2)  The power supply could be going bad.
    3)  The hard drive could be going bad.
    There could be several others.
If you have the original, came with the iMac when purchased new Install Disks, you can try running the Apple Hardware Test to see if it can determine any hardware issues.  It can't always find the problem.
    Good luck.

  • Does anyone know why the fan on my imac wont turn off?

does anyone know why the fan on my imac wont turn off?

Try resetting the SMC, it may take 2-3 attempts. Please post back with the results. If you're not sure how please follow the instructions in Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets

  • My Imac isnt turning on.. anyone have this problem? I havent even had it for a year yet!

i've tried pressing and holding the button for 30 seconds, i have tried making sure there is power in the outlet- there is.. Other things like the printer and lamp all work when plugged in, but all the sudden my imac wont turn on.
    PLEASE HELP!

Amplifying on Allen's remark, contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane.
Once you get it resolved, you can find more info by clicking on the Apple icon upper, left-hand corner->About this Mac->More info.
BTW, get the AppleCare protection plan. Cheapest and best insurance policy available for desktop machines.

  • "This channel is having temporary technical difficulties" Digital Adapter

Hi, I have recently received my digital adapters in the mail and in order to install these on the other tvs, I have used splitters on the Coax cable that plugs into the STB we had previously installed in the living room. After this i had one coax into the STB and another into one of the digital adapters. For some reason, the living room one is working, but the basement one we just tried to install is not working and is getting the message "This channel is having temporary technical difficulties." It might also be important to note that this setup did work for alittle then stopped working. I have tried reactivating and resetting the digital adapter, none of these worked. Does anyone know any possible solution? thank you

Yep, after signing up last night and testing the online player successfully earlier, it comes to the game now and all I am getting is either an error message or I am just being 'logged out' and bombed back to a log in screen again!

I dont get it I mean normally it works fine it is less then 2 months old and now it just wont turn on as if there is no power but it is plugged in correctly and I have tried unplugging it and that doesnt help at all

Contact Apple Care. I had a similar problem with my 20" Core Duo (2 GB RAM). After a month of owning the iMac, it turned out that my motherboard, AC/DC switch, and 1 GIG stick of RAM was bad. It was in the shop for 8 days. Now it runs like a champ. This was my first Mac by the way (long time PC-Windows user, er, hater).
