24" Imac intel G5 outer screen scratched

Just wanted to know if the outer screen of the LCD can be replaced? I accidently scratched it with a metal ruler and now I have a 4" scratch (grove) on the screen.
Thanks

FYI, an Intel-based iMac is NOT a G5. The G5 is a PowerPC based processor.

There is nothing available to polish the screen, not even a solution from the aviation industry as the screen plastic is actually too soft and flexible for abrasives. If the screen were glass, a solution is easy to find. All I can offer is to clean the computer screen and apply a tiny amount of Vaseline to fill in the scratch. Wipe off the excess, leaving the scratch filled with the Vaseline.
If this is not acceptable, clean the screen again and you are back to square one. I have used this method in dealing with a scratched plasma screen, it worked fine.

  • Can I add a iMac G5 screen to my iMac Intel for Dual screening?

I have a new iMac Intel 27" system and it replaced a iMac G5 system. I want to add a second screen to my mac so that I can multi task as I work. Is it possible to use the G5 screen to do this?
If not, what is my best option? Thanks

Only by using a product such as ScreenRecycler, all of which work over a network connection.

  • Using iMac (Intel) as second screen.

Is it possible to easily use an older iMac as a second screen to a new MacBook Pro?
This would obviously save the cost of purchasing a new monitor.
    Thanks for any advice/instructions/rulings.

Short answer is no. You need a late 2009 or later iMac to use Target Display Mode Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
There are software work arounds but they may or may not meet your expectations http://www.screenrecycler.com/ScreenRecycler.html

  • Imac (intel) 2008 24" screen.

Hi there, I bought my imac (intel) in 2008 along with an Applecare plan which I forgot to register (a complete waste! silly me). Can I register it now? The box is still un-opened? Any suggestions?thanks!

In addition to Paul's comments the AppleCare for a MacBook and an iMac are two seperate products. You cannot use an iMac AppleCare coverage on a MacBook or MacBook Pro.
When you get AppleCare the correct product must be purchased and it is wise to register the same day you purchase it.
Sorry you're having troubles, however I'm sure the same thing won't happen again.
Regarding your BF as I mentioned your BF cannot use the iMac AppleCare on his Macbook however you could try to take the iMac AppleCare back to an Apple Store and request a credit if you buy AppleCare for his MacBook Pro. Bring the MBP with you when you do it and they will help you register it in the store. It's really up to the store management if they will allow the exchange but it's worth a try.

  • IMac (intel) Mountain Lion screen blank

My iMac screen has blanked (black). Currently showing "Loading Photos..." which happens when it goes into screen saver mode. I have tried pulling the plug and restarting to no avail. My previous iMac G5 failed in a very similar way and had to be replaced. Is this the same problem ie. design fault of vital components?

Further to my initial question above: I have been pressing random keys and found that F9 brings the display back but as soon as I try to click on anything it reverts back to black with the timer twirling. Any ideas?

  • Late 2009 iMac intel partially black screen graphics help?

I have a late 2009 27 inch imac which started to get this issue:- webpages will have black where images should be, open window boxes will be black, drop down menu's either black or multicoloured and can't be read, mouse over icons on dock makes them black, text documents is all black- however the wallpaper is normal and borders of the webpages etc...
Booted using the apple hardware test cd- short test and long result resulted in no hardware issues however only long test fixes the black issue for a day before it returns again.
What is the issue, do i need to replace the graphics card.  I believe there is alot of dust inside so could this be the issue?  I also installed the smc fancontroll and set speeds of around 2000rpm with average temps under 55'c.  Before smc speeds were default to 1000 rpm and temp highest was 60'c.
I have also tried switch on imac when fully cold, but straight away the issue is present even though temp is low of 30'c.  so far the only fix is to long test using the apple hardware test cd.
Please give informed help as i am pretty useless with regards to programs etc..having been a pc user before this imac.
incidently the graphics card is ati Radeon HD 4850 512 MB.

  • I have an iMac G5 isight (20" screen) Leopard OS 10.5.8 I do not have an intel chip. I am unable to open movie links on facebook using Adobe flash player. I called Adobe Systems and they said Adobe no longer supported computers that did not have intel chi

I have an iMac G5 (20 inch screen) i sight (no intel chip).Leopard OS 10.5.8. Recently I went on Facebook and tried to open a movie site someone had sent me on Facebook andwhen I tried to open the video on Facebook, I was told  I had to upgrade my Adobe Flash Player. i tried to do this, but turns out that Facebook is requiring folks to have an intel chip in order to view movies...this is outrageous!  Just think of all the folks in the world who have great running pre intel chip Apple computers. I called the Adobe Help line and was told that I really needed to buy a new computer....no thanks. How do I find a way to get a new version of Adobe for Facebook and youtube. I wish Apple could develop a way to have intel chips installed in the older computers. If you have any suggestions on this please let me know.
    Thanks, Sarah

Either get a screen cleaning cloth, or carefully us a slightly damp lint-free cloth and dry off with a dry link-=free cloth.
As to Flash Videos: I am in a similar same boat. I cannot watch flash videos on the BBC website or on BBC iPlayer, although all other flash videos (YouTube and FaceBook for example) are fine.
For reasons that passeth all understanding, they work with the PPC version of Firefox, called TenFourFoxG5.app, once you have anabled plug-ins, as it does not natively support Flash.
You can download TenFourFoxG5 from here:
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
Now for the intersting bit: TenFourFox, like Firefox, does not support most plug-ins. Unless you are prone to headaches (in which case don't) you can read about that here:
    http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/PluginsNoLongerSupported
    But there is a workaround!
Open TenFourFox and type in the address bar: about:config (no spaces) and click return. This gives you a warning that it might harm the application. Ignore that and click on 'I'll be careful, I promise' and you get the config file that you can edit - with great care.
    Look/search (scroll down) for: tenfourfox.plugins.enabled
Set it to true. (Double click it to toggle it)
Now close TenFourFox, open it again, and Flash will now work, as it now uses the plug-ins that Safari has stored.
I am using Flash 10.1.102.64 in TenFourFox and it works just fine.

  • Problems sharing screen w/ iMac Intel and macbook

'm new to networking, so I hope someone can lead me in the right direction. I have a new iMac Intel running Leopard. I also have a MacBook2,1 running Tiger. They both are on my Airport Extreme network.
I can screen share from my iMac to my MacBook, but not the other way around. When I try to access my iMac from my MacBook I get the dreaded beachball for about a minute then it won't connect. I have "file sharing" and "screen sharing" enabled in my system prefs on my iMac.
    Am I missing something here?

I have a similar problem. I screen share with my friend who's across the Atlantic ocean. We both have Macbooks (mine is a Pro).
I can share my screen to his account but not the other way around. The option to share his screen is always grayed out. HOWEVER, if he quits his account and logs into say the "Guest" account, all of a sudden I can share his screen.
All the Sys Prefs options are the same for both accounts, so I have no idea why this is happening. We both upgraded our previous Tiger installations so I'm not sure why his is causing so much trouble.
Last thing: last nite I was able to share his screen but NOT by click on the little icon at the bottom of iChat. A totally different, long horizontal bar showed up on the screen asking me to choose either sharing my screen or his. If anyone can point me back to that option, I would appreciate it because it was the only thing that actually did work.

Not running Leopard (Panther), but I have a similar problem on my 24" iMac. Computer was working fine last night (I shut it down) and when I went to boot up this morning the computer is stuck on a black screen.
The boot up sound is initiated but nothing after that. The power light stays at full brightness, if I touch the power button the light blinks and then after a while it goes out. A full reset does nothing. I've tried reseting my PRAM, which works because I hear the start up sound twice, but no change to the black screen.
I don't have access to another Mac, would inserting the Startup Disc I received with the computer do anything?

  • I bought MACkeeper and used it to cleanup my computer. I have a Imac intel, When I didi this it deleted all my files. I tried to do a time machince. and it didn't work. so I pulled the files out of trash and my computer still isn't runing right.

I bought MacKeeper to help make my Imac intel faster. Insted it deleted all my files.
I tried to recover using time Machine, and it didn't recover back to yesterday. So I started to pull
the files and Applications out of trash. This just got me lipping along. It ran slower and would get
the spining wheel of death. I finaly gave in and thought I would reinstall Lion and everything would be
great. Well wrong, I seem to be starting fine, but all my files are gone. When I go in to time Machine
I see a device drive name (xxx). I go in that device and all my files are there. how do I pull them to the new
install of Lion? So I can be happy again. Thank you for all your time and help.

    Do not install MacKeeper:

  • Screen Glitch - no start up - imac - intel - 10.7.3

Processor  3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
    Serial Number  74******3F9
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
    Hello,
several months ago my imac overheated and the screen started to flicker. It was not a particularly hot day but two or three weeks previously the computer had been transported by car for a few hours - it was wrapped up in a blanket. It had been working fine for the few weeks between the move and the overheating.
I have only now got round to dealing with it.
The machine will not start up. There is a repeated pattern covering the entire screen that looks like little bats - yes, bats, flying bats, they are small and yellow. It goes to the grey apple icon and a grey dial spins for a while and then stops spinning and then sometimes the screen goes to a bacl and white flickering mode where the bottom three quarters of the screen are black and the upper part is white and it flickers up and down a bit.
I can boot into safe mode but the screen problem still occurs. I have put a video of this on youtube here.
I have tried booting from a disk warrior disk but it does not go anywhere - the machine crashes. I am unsure exactly what the problem is, whether it is hardware or software. I got it to boot up once - not fully, but to a dialog box that said something about the computer crashing and when I clicked okay it went to the black and white flickering screen. But when the diealog box was open there was no problem with the screen - or at least I could not see one - the background was entirely blue with only a small dialog box in the middle.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful. Also, if there is any other information that you might need then please ask.
Thank you for your help in advance.
    Adam.

First, which iMac? Second, contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.  Might also apply to new machines the first 90 days. BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best insurance policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

  • IMac Intel with Parallels, Two Monitors and Screen Spanning

    Hi,
Longtime Mac user forced into using Windows XP for my business. I have an iMac G5 2.1 (iSight) PowerPC. I need two monitors with screen spanning so I'm thinking of getting an iMac Intel, running Bootcamp or Parallels with XP Pro, and using a screen-spanning program.
    1. Can I run Windows XP on the Intel Mac and use screen spanning with a PowerPC iMac?
    2. Is it better to load the screen-spanning software on the XP or Mac system?
    Thanks! Any help appreciated.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
if nobody answers your questions it could also be that nobody has tried it yet.
I haven't tried this setup yet, so forgive me for fishing in muddy water.
Windows XP is capable of using two (or depending on the graphics card even more) monitors for duplicating or spanning.
My own two Intel Macs are showing me this opportunity in the preferences.
Since I never had the need to do so I have never attached a second monitor.
The Intel iMacs and MacPros are capable of attacing second monitors however with the iMacs you a adapter which you can get from Apple.
I would suggest (if possible) to go the nearest Apple Store and try to convince the guys there to do such a setup for you to verify that it works.
    Good Luck
    Stefan

  • IMac intel 10.6.8 will not shut down. Blue screen comes on and spinning wheel goes round.

My iMac intel will not shut down. The version is 10.6.8. To turn it off I have to use the the power off button. Is there any one who can help me to solve the problem.
The blue screen comes on and the spinning wheel goes round and round until I have to turn it off by the power button.

I am having the same problem on my Mini.  I found an earlier thread (now archived) that suggested that this spinning wheel on shutdown of SL has something to do with power management settings.  Another idea was that it is related to EyeTV (which I do have running on this Mac).
Any ideas from the community on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!  (I have done the typical steps of repairing permissions and (from the Install CD) running Disk Utility, which reported no problems.)
