24" iMac LCD no backlight

I was just told that the inverter board is probably bad on the LCD of my 24" iMac. The screen is working, it just has no backlight so it is dark... I was wondering what my options are... fix the LCD inverter, replace the LCD inverter, or buy a whole new screen.
I have a 2007 24" iMac.

Hi!
I am connecting via a D-Link DIR655 11n capable router and have come across the same problem as lots of others on my Leopard based 24" white iMac. There was no problem when I had Tiger installed. I discovered that by turning off WPA (and probably any other) encryption it works. So now I have an unsecure network which is giving me nightmares.
I read elsewhere that the work around might be to set things up so that MAC address is used as a filter. I've not tried it yet. One of these work arounds might work. Still I think its time Apple "got their finger out" and resolved this problem that's plaguing many Mac owners.

  • Lenovo U310 LCD Screen Backlight Won't Turn On.

I purchased a new U310 near the end of August this year, using it primarily to bring with me to school.  However, I've been having a problem with the LCD screen backlight.  Typically, when the computer starts up, the backlight will be working fine.  However, once the computer goes into powersave mode and shuts the display off, often the backlight to the display will not turn on again regardless of if I press keys or the touchpad.  These are some things I've noticed:
The display IS still on.  I can still very faintly make out the desktop and use the system, but the backlight is off completely
This issue does not happen all of the time, but is still quite frequent
Sometimes putting the computer to sleep and then waking it solves the problem, but not all of the time
Sometimes the backlight remains off even after a forced power off (holding down the power button), but typically a restart solves the problem and enables the backlight again
Adjusting screen brightness has no effect
This happens regardless of the battery level and whether or not the system is plugged in
Although this issue has seemed more prevalent recently, it even happened on the day I bought the laptop, but I just wasn't yet aware it was a reoccurring issue
I've been able to recreate this issue, in fact I was just able to make it happen twice in a row.  First time the display went off and didn't turn back on, I restarted.  This even repeated the next time the display went into powersave mode, so I restarted again.  The third time the display went into powersave mode, I was able to turn it on again simply by touching the touchpad (as it should be).
I think that about sums up what I know.  I apologize for making such a long post, but I'm thinking I can't be the only one with this issue.  I'm new to the community and couldn't find a similar post anywhere on the forums.  Since I infrequently use this system, and the issue has been there since I got it, I'm assuming it must be a driver problem.  If anyone has any insight or is experiencing similar problems, I'd be glad to hear!  I thought I'd post before contacting Lenovo directly.  Thanks!

I suggest you please uninstall the energy management software, reebot and install it again. You will find the setup of energy management in drivers folder in the drive named lenovo ( maybe E or D). Please give it a shot and post results.

  • Imac LCD Help

Hi Guys, well its been almost 5 months that lines have started occurring on my Imac LCD.. however i know its expensive to repair so i did not care initially. However recently i bought the cable to mirror another lcd display to my imac as the LCD started to have alot of flickers.. This is my question.. anyone knows if my Imac LCD displays blacks out.. do you think the mirroring of LCD will be affected?

It mostly depends on where the problem is. If the problem is the video controller, then, yes if one display goes out the other will also, because the controller feeds both the internal LCD and the external display. If the problem is just the internal LCD display itself, if it goes out your external display may still work.

  • Faint horizontal lines accross iMac lcd

Had a 24" iMac that developed faint horizontal lines across the lcd that got progressively darker the longer the computer was on. Had the lcd replaced by Apple twice, but after a couple of weeks the problem returned. They gave me a new iMac, but a month in I have the same problem with the new machine. Has anyone encountered this problem? Is it an inherent issue with iMac lcds or is it something external affecting my machine? And I'm not talking poltergeist. Help, want this fixed.

We have a 20" imac Core Duo that was purchased summer 2006 - then about 5 or 6 months ago, it started developing horizontal lines across applications (Safari, Mail, etc) and the desktop - sometimes they would go away, sometimes not... I thought is was some video driver conflicting, upgraded to snow leopard, went to the genius bar, etc... but lately it got worse to the point that it started locking up every day... this after going weeks or months without a reboot and over 3 years having almost zero crashes...
I read in a forum where the video chip (GPU - graphics processing unit) was heat sensitive and thought that after 3+ years, maybe it was dusty in there... I installed the iStat widget to monitor the temp of the GPU and installed a fan control (software) where you can increase the minimum speed of the hard drive fan (allegedly located above the GPU). I also put the end of the vacuum on the fan vent just above where the power cord goes into the back of the monitor and let it run for a while hoping to clean things out...
5 days later - zero display issues, zero hangs and zero crashes - and the GPU runs an average of 25 degrees cooler than before. This after a genius bar guy told me that it probably needs a new display board. Good Luck!

  • Is it possible to replace an 2011 iMac LCD with one from an HP Z1 desktop?

The left side of my LCD screen is not receiving power, a problem that was addressed in one of the other threads, however I was unable to fix it and now need to replace the LCD completely. The HP Z1 all in one computers uses the same screen as the iMac so I'm thinking of buying this one here on ebay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/301417061741?_trksid=p2059210.m2750.l2649&ssPageName=STR K%3AMEBIDX%3AIT, does anyone know if it'll be compatible with the iMac? Thank you for your input

You should talk to your Apple Store.  The newest iMacs are very difficult, if not impossible, for the average person to repair.   The glass on previous iMacs could be replaced DIY but the new slimmer version is supposed to be specially glued together.

  • IMAC LCD Display

One of my IMACS (24 in. 2.4GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo) experienced an LCD that was dark in the upper 1/3 of the screen. The OS (Snow Leopard) seemed to operate normally. Since I had a warranty from Best Buy, I took the IMAC to them for repairs. After one month they returned it with a recertified hard drive (listed at $23.93) . The work order stated that it had passed all tests. In the process of importing data to the IMAC, which is in my home network, the system test for hardware was passed. I had a problem with an admin. password but, with help from Apple tech support (under the S. Leopard warranty) I was able to solve it. Two days after the IMAC was returned from the Geek Squad (last night), the LCD went dark agin in the same area. I shut the system down. This morning, at log-in, the screen was clear, except for a small area in the middle of the screen. All signs of darkness have cleared up and I have the IMAC under observation for the day. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Allen so your telling me if I replace the LCD it will solve my problem?
    Absolutely not!
A new display will only fix the line if the line is due to the display itself and not the cabling or another part of the video subsystem.
Like Mirian said, you MUST have the probelm professionally diagnosed before jumping to a soution. If there is a cable problem but you replace your LCD, the line will still be there and you will have wasted a lot of money. The display units are nether cheap or easy to find.

  • Do the new Imacs fix the Backlight Gradient problem?

Ok, time to resurrect this question - as my 3rd copy of a 1st gen aluminum imac is starting to burn out my left eye... And I am not the only one if you look at the history of this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1502535
Has anyone had a chance to go into a store and checkout the new model? If someone does can they report their findings here?
I'm also curious if anyone is going to try and get applecare to fix their old imac by replacing it with a new one that does not have the problem - I am considering it.

I have a white 24" iMac with LCD display issue. Apple replaced the LCD under Apple Care. The new LCD had the same issue.
Went back to the Apple Store but, according to the Tech there's nothing wrong. Obviously, they're told to say it's within specs.
I went directly to an Apple Authorized Repair Center where they were familiar with the issue. So much so that the description on the work order described things I didn't mention but were there (yellowish discoloration in the center of display).
I won't give in to Apple saying it is what it is. There are perfect displays out there and I won't stop until they replace mine with one!

  • IMac LCD not working after Leopard install

So I have a family pack and installed leopard on three computers so far and they all took forever, so I went to install on my iMac G4 1.25, 1 gig RAM, and I got the install started and when I returned the screen was black. I restarted and nothing. I finally got the computer hooked up to a plasma I have at my house and sure enough the install went just fine. Long story short, my comp is just fine, the LCD just doesn't show anything. The vid card is fine if it shows up on an external monitor, the LCD is connected and functioning because I can adjust the brightness and that still works, just no video
I called AppleCare and was on the phone for, no joke, 1:37:39, WOW, took forever, the guy ended up telling me that it is out of warranty and I need to pay to have it fixed. Anyone have any ideas or what to do?

Anyone have this similar problem? or know what I need to do?

  • IMac LCD screen replaced, Blue Screen startup

Hi there, I just had the LCD screen replaced on my late 2007 Aluminum iMac today (due to a permanent red vertical streak) by an Applecare certified technician. He did a meticulous job with the replacement, and the iMac booted up just fine afterwards. About an hour later, though, I tried starting up the iMac and after the grey screen with the Apple logo it gets stuck on a blue screen with a constantly spinning pinwheel.
Now I tried everything, booting up in Safe Mode, Single User Mode, resetting the PRAM, FSCK, Disk Utility using Disk Repair, unplugging the power cord for 30 seconds, etc. and nothing seems to work. It just gets stuck on a blue screen whenever it tries to boot up.
Just wanted to see if there is anything else I could try out before I give Apple a call tomorrow, if this boot up problem is a result of the new LCD screen replacement or what? Any help or insight in the matter would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Update: I should note that right now I'm in the (lengthy) process of restoring from a Time Machine save to see if that helps out in any way.

You could try the following first, but a repair may be required.
iMac G5: Fails to startup (From an article at MacFixit)
Some users are reporting an issue where iMac G5s fail to properly startup -- apparently at a hardware level -- never reaching the Mac OS X startup splash screen (Apple logo with a spinning progress indicator).
Note that in cases where the system does reach the Mac OS X startup splash screen or further progression but stalls, software issues may be to blame.
    Potential fixes
Disconnect external devices External devices -- especially those that draw power from the system -- can cause issues with startup that manifest either at the beginning of or later in the boot process. Try temporarily any external FireWire or USB devices then re-attempt startup and check for persistence of the issue.
Reset SMU Although this workaround was not successful in Connors' case, resetting the iMac G5's SMU (system management unit) as described in Apple Knowledge Base article #301733 can resolve a variety of power-related problems, including sudden-onset startup failure.
Check power cables Check your power cord for a loose connection. As noted in the aforementioned reader case, unplugging and re-plugging the power cord can sometimes result in a successful startup -- likely the result of a more snug fit.
Also, power cables can become defective or ship in such a state.
Try exchanging the power cable from a problematic machine with a system that starts up properly to eliminate this as a potential cause.

  • Dirt inside iMac LCD

I got my iMac back in 2011. In early 2012 I started to notice small black smudges on the top right corner, out of my 90 day phone support and more than 1 hour away from any Apple store I ignored the problem hoping it would eventually go away. In the last month or so, the problem has become significantly worse, making it almost impossible to focus on the screen without seeing this large patch of dirt in the screen. According to Apple it would cost $300+ to replace the LCD. So does anyone think I should try the fix on MacRumors which involves taking apart the physical LCD, or should I take it to Apple and see if they will replace it with the knowledge that it's a major design flaw?

If you bought AppleCare this will be covered....did you every buy it? If not you will have to take it to an Apple Store or AASP. As for a flaw, that's why warrantees and AppleCare exist, don't expect anything for free because you ignored the issue and may not have purchase AppleCare.

  • Satellite Pro L300 1AI LCD screen backlight not working

    Hi All,
I have a Satellite Pro L300 1AI running Windows Vista the computer boots up and works fine but the backlight on the screen does not appear to be working.
Are there any settings in Vista that can affect this (other than the Fn key command on the keyboard and the settings in Control Panel)? Strangely it only seems to have happened since i installed Skype but I can't see how that could possibly affect it.
    Any help is gratefully appriciated...

    Hi
Whats wrong exactly? Is notebooks display brightness too low?
Do you see everything on the screen like behind a thick fog?
Well, usually the FL inverter controls the display backlight and if the FL inverter starts to malfunction then you would get the problem like this one.
There is no other solution as to replace this FL inverter.
Its a tiny part behind the display frame I think its a job for an ASP technician

  • Alternating pixels turned-off of iMac LCD

I have a 20" iMac Core2Duo from 2006 where half of the internal pixels just turned off (look like black vertical lines across the entire screen, where it alternates from a vertical line of pixels turned on to another turned off, etc). It doesn't look to be a software problem since I booted up from a Ubuntu linux CD and the lines were still there. Changing the video resolution and resetting the PRAM do not make any difference. This seems to be different than the other lines people on these boards complain about regarding the iMac.
I attached an external monitor and it works fine (no lines), but was wondering if anyone else had something similar happen and if it was a graphic card problem, blacklight, connector, etc? Any tips to help me determine to spend the money to look for the problem or not would be appreciated.

The problem is that it does not work with the 'Apple ram' either. And I have tested the ram in my Macbook with succes, so that does not seem to be the problem.
I just turned it into another service provider today, but I really doubt that they will come to another conclusion...
The problem is that Apple got no shop in Denmark, and therefore Apple need to send a CAS number to hte service provider to legimitate that they can do the repair without any cost for the consumer. But I dont quite know whenever the service provider shall request the CAS number from apple upon finished diagnose or I shall contact Apple and then convince them that they shall send the CAS to the service provider. :/
But do anybody know if I am the only one? I have seen on this forum that there is a few but is it like a big problem?

  • How to remove and/or reuse iMac LCD?

I have a 24" iMac with a quickly fading motherboard. The display is still flawless and I want to either remove the screen and mount it in a new bezel or convert the entire computer into a dvi or hdmi secondary monitor (removing or bypassing the other components like motherboard, hard drive, ram, etc.). Anyone have ideas? I intend to buy another machine, but this beautiful display should not go to waste.

It doesn't need to go to waste however it does rely on the main logic board to work. In your case I would part out the computer and sell the good components including the display. For disassembly instructions Google is your friend.

  • IMac 27" uneven backlight?

This is my first iMac on 1 day old and I'm noticing on darker backgrounds that the bottom 3 inches of the screen is slightly darker than the rest, is this typical? I have no dead or stuck pixels and not sure if this is worth a return if it's normal. I think I have 14 days to decide.

I'm noticing on darker backgrounds that the bottom 3 inches of the screen is slightly darker than the rest, is this typical?
No.  I would take it in for diagnosis and service under the warranty.
