24" iMac positioning conundrum

Hello all... I ordered the 24' iMac yesterday which should be with me by October 31st ( too long!!!! lol )
I have quite a large desk but above it is a shelf which, going by the dimensions of the iMac, will be just above the top of the computer. Do you think this may cause any problems... heat-wise etc ? I think air is drawn in from the bottom and expelled at the top, so I don't think there'll be a problem.... but one can never be too safe.
Any help/suggestions would be great
Lee

I'm pretty sure it'll be alright, my computer is in a pretty tight space next to my TV, and I never have heat problems, and plus, if you did start to have heat problems you'd begin to hear the fan run louder, so that would be the time to find a more open space, but for now you're cool :-P
Below is a picture of my setup, it's in a pretty tight space, but I never have any problems at all....
Hope this helps a bit
-Josh

  • Fans on Macs

I just added a La Cie firewire drive to my iMac and since then (it would appear that) the fans have gone mad......a silent machine is now whirring quite loudly all the time. Are the two related? If so, I shall have to plug it in to a VAIO upstairs and share the drive, but I really wasn't expecting this.
Incidentally, for those who like me, own a MacBook as well, the new firmware update has not caused my Macbook's fans to be on at all times.
Thanks for any help on the iMac/HD conundrum.

Sorry, I didn't notice the previous post. Have you looked at your processor speed in System Prefs>EnergySaver? Try setting it at lowest and see if that quiets the fans down. Which model iMac do you have? If it's one of the early ones, your fan problem may be covered by Apple's Repair Extension Program. Check and see if your serial number is one of those affected.

  • I scanned some black and white negatives into my computer (iMac) where they were stored aas positives on the hard disc. When I import them to iPhoto they turn back into negatives. How do I change them into positives for printing?

I have scanned some black and white negatives into my computer(iMac) where they are stored on the hard disc as positives. When I import them into iPhoto to print they turn back into negatives. How do I turn them back into positives?

That's because you scanned them as B/W photos and iPhoto 08 doesn't support the grayscale color profile.  You can either rescan them as color photos or export them as originals out of iPhoto to a folder on the desktop and applhy this Automator application, Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB Profile, on them and then remimport into iPhoto. You can download it from  Toad's Cellar .  Be sure to read the warning on the website about not applying it on your only copies.

  • External Monitor in Negative iMac monitor Positive !?

Hi- I have just hooked up a 17" Apple LCD as a palette or adjunct monitor to my 24" iMac and it displays in negative even though the iMac is positive. If I change the universal access it shows the iMac as neg and the 17" as positive. This also occurred on my laptop, but I somehow eventually got it to be similar. What is the fix??

O.K. I replugged the cable into the ADC DVI adapter and it came up positive or correct orientation. Anyone else ever have this problem and will it get worse?

  • My 27 inch iMac screen will not hold position when I move it.  It just drops back to the lowest position.

My 27 inch iMac monitor tilts forward and will not hold position when I adjust it up.. Is there a tension adjustment for the monitor position?

That is a hardware issue that will be covered under warranty if the machine is a 2012 or later iMac. Bring it into your closest Apple Store or AASP for repair.

  • Help! I deleted my System preferences by mistake! I'm absolutely positive they are gone. Unfortunately so are the disks that came with it. I'm using an Imac with os 10.4.11. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Help! I deleted my System preferences by mistake! I'm absolutely positive they are gone. I checked spotlight, blue apple and the hard drive, applications. Gone. Unfortunately so are the disks that came with it. I'm using an Imac with os 10.4.11. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try cleaning the disc, and be sure you have the right one.
If that doesn't help, it sounds like it's time for a trip to the Apple Store.

  • Camera Position Icons Disappear after installing FCP on new iMac...

Anybody have an idea? Just bought a new iMac with an Intel Core i7 processor and maxed out the RAM at 16 GB. Now, when launching Motion, the camera position icons in the top right corner of the viewer, and the camera view menu on the top left of the viewer have mostly disappeared - just leaving some weird colored blocks.
    Thanks!

Update Motion to 4.0.3 - that was a bug that's been fixed...

  • HT6114 My iMac seems to have frozen during the update- how long should I expect the update to take? The 'installing software update' bar is still showing itself working but has been stuck in the same position for over an hour.

My iMac seems to have frozen during the update- how long should I expect the update to take? The 'installing software update' bar is still showing itself working but has been stuck in the same position for over an hour. Any thoughts?

Update2: There is something very wrong with wireless on mountain lion recovery. I don't know what the problem is, but this link may explain:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/10/os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-1-beta-released-for-dev-t esting-may-include-wi-fi-fix/
Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery.

  • Possible avast! anti-virus false positive on imac

greetings, installed the free avast! anti-virus software earlier today & ran a scan on my imac. results showed 2 infections of - Win32:Injector-AEO[Trj] . so i did a quick search & found that the win32 virus should have no effect on a mac. is that true? but that i could possible infect others pc's? also found that avast! is know for false positives, presumably so they can get you to upgrade to their expensive pay service. there seems to be no way to remove the infections with the free software avast! provided. i was advised to de-install the avast! software - which i did. so i was wondering what the best course of action is at this point? get norton or something & rescan, or what?

Windows malware does not affect OS X. It is true you can pass along the malware to another through email assuming the malware came to you in email and you forwarded the email to others.
In general you have no need for such protection in OS X at this time. You would be better off with no such software installed.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)

  • My 3 apple products, an imac, a macbook air and a macbook lost their contact with their external hard disks. They were LaCie make. And every time I turn my laptops, I find the positions of the keys on their  keyboards changed.  Why is Apple silent?

After the latest apple IOS upgrade my 3 apple products, an imac, a macbook air and a macbook, lost their contact with their external hard disks. They were LaCie make. And every time I turn my laptops, I find the positions of the keys on their  keyboards changed.  Why is Apple silent? There are so many people complaining about this issue and expecting Apple to correct this issue that they have created.

Probably because it's not an Apple issue. I have Lacie EHD's connected to my MBAir and iMac, all work perfectly on Mavericks. In addition I don't have any keyboard issues on any of my Apple products. BTW IOS is only for IOS devices such as iPads, iPods and iPhones, Macs use OS X. The two OS's are seperate  products designed to run on seperate products.

  • IMac desktop with ATT Uverse wifi conundrum

Just switched from ATT DSL to Uverse.
Original DSL setup: Ethernet from SpeedStream router to AirportX. Wifi to iMac desktop, Apple TV, and 2 iphones.
Used this same setup with the Uverse 2Wire Gateway. Everything worked fine.
Wanted to try the ATT Gateway wifi to see if it had farther reach and for future travel with the AirportX.
All devices connected fine via wifi to the 2Wire except the iMac.
The iMac showed it was on the 2Wire wifi network but pages wouldn't load.
ATT support was no help. They said desktops can't connect via wifi, only laptops. Obviously not true but since all other devices could connect to their equip they couldn't help further. They offered to send someone out but if it turned out to not be their equip I'd have to pay a fee.
Can iMacs only connect via wifi signals from AXs and AEs? Is there some setting I need to change?
Currently it's academic since our iMac is right beside the 2Wire so it can be connected by Ethernet. However, due to the old wiring in this house, if we decide to change the iMac's location we'll either have to run long Ethernet cables around the house or pay to have the other hard wiring updated.

  • I have an iMac running 10.7.5 and I am experiencing problems importing and burning CD's. I suspect it may be a hardware problem as it afflicts tracks in a certain position on the disc I believe.

Importing misses parts of a track and exporting gives a corrupted track that will not replay. I have cleaned the lens on the drive and tried various different speeds for import and export.

    Hello Mister Bling,
Thank you for providing all the information about what is going on with your burning issue you are experiencing.
I recommend resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your iMac:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find the full article here:

If you are still having trouble with burning and importing after that step, you may need to have your optical drive looked at:
    The drive scratches media
If media is getting scratched after being used in the drive please contact Apple, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store for additional troubleshooting, evaluation, or service.

  • Panther to Leopard or Tiger for G5 Imac

    Hello,
I am in the process of trying to back up my computer. I bought an external drive that has software that is compatible with OS X10.4.8+. I have panther which is X10.3.x and cannot use the software to back up my data. If I do not upgrade my operating system what is the best plan and how do I back up the data I have on my computer? I am considering upgrading to Tiger because it was the last operating system designed just for the G5 chip. Leopard scares me because I have not read anything about it that is positive with an older non Intel chip imac. Anyone have good experiences with Leopard and their G5 imac? Time machine on Leopard is interesting to me and would be the main reason to update but if the whole operating system does not work well with the G5 imac then I have not improved my computer.
    Mark

Use SuperDuper! to make an exact bootable clone of your system to your external firewire drive. That way, if anything goes wrong, and it shouldn't, you will have everything saved.
A hint, when you have installed Leopard, use the [10.5.6 combo updater|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1056co mboupdate.html] to get yourself up-to-date.

  • Can I dock my windows Laptop with IMAC?

    Hi,
This would have been a no possibly even 3 years ago, but with the development of common software protocols allowing a flourishing application market, is it now possible for me to dock my Windows PC with a new IMAC. To the extent that the MAC is actually driving things using its OS.
    4 Reasons:-
The first reason for wanting to use the Apple OS, is the fault of my overzealous company security settings which when in full flow like they are now on "Virus Scan Thursday" runs up about 90% of the RAM to the point is can take 5 minutes to open a basic forecasting sheet.
The second one is:- after using IPAD day to day for the past three years I can honestly say its one of the most intuitive devices to use, especially Numbers and Keynote. No more googling for formulas. To make my point about its simplicity, I draw your attention to Excels Autosum function which i'm sure you can remember is the Sigma symbol, so poor a symbol is it, that MS have to translate and scribe the words AutoSum in every common language known to man next to it, you opted for the = sign.
The third reason is:- Windows just seems so thrown together now that it might, and quite often does stop working and self destructs. A little bit like the Vauxhall Victor X type did in the 60's. Let me explain what I mean. Take the three next gen consoles on the market, Sony PS4, MS XBOX ONE, and the Nintendo WII U. My boys and are fortunate enough (my bonus payment not so lucky) to have the latter 2-following subsequent visits from a white bearded fellow. I like the shooty brash environments that are driven up in games like COD, which to be fair is the only real game on XBOX ever that I've played since getting over the shock that I could connect with other people over the planet and play them. Anyway before I run off track onto a rose-tinted day when me an my brother would divide the screen up into two sections using cardboard. When playing Goldeneye on the N64; one of us laying prone, one of us sat in an inflatable plastic sofa, both pair of eyes glued to the action on their OWN PORTION of the screen. The cardboard acting like the plastic piece separating two battleship players, neither one knowing the others position. But for the Xbox that's about it, the other games developers don't seem to get the game-play over graphics argument. In the case of some its either far-far too complex for concern, I'm thinking about those driving games with the flash cars and exquisite level of detail in the telemetry and how that car handles. Realistically how many of us have the time to play a full 24 hour Le - Mans - Grand Prix with all of the automatic, car control gadgets switched off. To the complete opposite where the game-play is sooooooo simple, take the reboot of tomb raider which took around 12 hours to clock with all of the collectables. Then you have thousands of apps to contend with. Zune, Music player, etc all bolted onto a bastardised win 8 setup. Then look at Nintendo, and its OS its refined and things seem to work, the published games are always excellent and playable by any age. The new Yoshi wool world looks amazing but it has the complexity of the stardome on Mario world.
The fourth and final reason is, it would probably save me 5 - 10 minutes a day swapping files over email etc etc... But, Its 5 minutes more I can spend with my boys practising their footballing skills and acting out their other ambitions, so that one day they don't have to worry about the appalling 1st world plight of interoperability problems between Windows and Apple! which like Oasis and Blur from Britpop England in the 90's and Love it or Hate it Marmite, realised that being ever so slightly different and arguing a bit about the relative merits of the new stuff, cautiously publicly insulting each other whilst really being squash buddies would ensure massive success for both of them!

  • Green Screen and Freezing on G3 iMac CRT

Hi - My son's Snow Slot Load 500mxh G3 iMac has recently developed some problems. It happened not long after updating to Tiger but seems not to be related to that. I installed the firmware upgrade before updating and the install went fine. It was working fine for a few weeks but started freezing up at random times requiring the power button to be held to restart. It would then restart and work fine but over the last couple weeks, the freeze ups have become so frequent that it's basically not worth bothering with. The freeze ups seem to have some sort of mechanical aspect to them - there is an actual flash or flicker or surge type thing as if the power was interupted. I have plugged the iMac into different power sources, etc. to be sure that it isn't somehow something in the houses wiring but that has not effect. In addition, in the last week or so, the screen has taken on a pronounced green cast. At first this problem was intermitent but now is pretty much permanent (it did come on once properly) It still works fine in terms of resolution, positioning, etc., no weird artifacts, just green. Both of the problems persist even if the iMac is started in OS9 or from a CD. I ran the Apple Hardware Diag CD and it gave a clean bill of health on everything....hmmm!
My guess is that it is a hardware problem and the obvious choice would be the video board. I don't want to put it out to pasture since it works great for my son but I also don't want to put bunches of time and $$$ into it swapping out different boards to try to figure the problem. Does anyone know any fairly definitive tests to determine if it is the Video board or, if not, what it is?
Thanks in advace for any help.

both the CRT and at least the High Voltage section of the PAV are likely bad. Right?<</div>
No only the PAV sounds like it's going bad. The fact that the CRT lights up means that it's good. The silver box on the back of the CRT that Apple refers to as the Video Board is part of the PAV. In fact when you replace the PAV you want to keep that same Video Board with the CRT so it involves cutting and splicing of 2 wires.
Let the HV on the PAV die and use an external Monitor<</div>
Most likely it's the flyback transformer on the PAV that is going and when that goes it's usually it's the Anode section that dies.
If I go with one of the options using an external Monitor, do I need to disconnect the internal CRT? I mean, I know that I don't have to disconnect the internal CRT to use an external Monitor but would it be better to?<</div>
Well if the Anode section dies then mute point because the HV will be gone anyway.
Replace the PAV, use an external Monitor<</div>
If you replace the PAV (deadly voltages involved! Also working PAVs are hard to come by) you wouldn't need an external monitor because the internal one would then work. My son has a 700 Snow that I dropped a DVD-ROM from a 500 Graphite into. Had to use Pacifist to get it to work. Hooked up an external LCD. Now he's watching Pirates II in stereo. He also uses it for Garage Band.
