24" iMac possible water spots/circle pattern?

I've had this issue come up in the last few days with no real explanation. I know the end result is going to be taking it to the Apple store, but I wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience first.
I cleaned my iMac the other day with iKlear using the instructions (so no one assumes I dumped a gallon of cleaner on the display). This involved spraying a very very small amount of solution on one corner of the cloths so it is damp-not wet.
The display was turned off and allowed to cool then cleaned. When I restarted the iMac, I noticed small, brownish circles in varying sizes in the top left corner of the display. They are very noticeable on white backgrounds, and disappear in darker colors. I removed the "glass" front and the spots appeared to be on the display itself, but nothing worked in removing them...it seems like they are behind the surface of the LCD.
There is no possible way is came from the cleaning as it was barely wet enough to even feel damp. The only thing I can think of is somehow something entered through the back of the display via the fan vent/line?
It's livable I guess, but highly annoying. Not sure if it's worth paying to have fixed, but if anyone else has seen something like this, please chime in!
Cheers.

As a matter of fact, I came to the support forum looking for anyone else with this issue. A few months ago I had my iMac's screen replaced due to serious issues with the inverter. The new screen looked better and I happily forgot about it.
Until a few weeks ago - I noticed what looked like half of a clover burned into my display in the top third towards the middle. Thinking it was dirt, I cleaned the glass panel. No results. I removed the glass panel and cleaned the inside and LCD screen. No results. I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM and that didn't help.
I was dismayed about this defect but just ignored it and after a while I hardly noticed it, unless I looked right at it. Last week I noticed another blotch on the screen, to the lower left of the first, that is IDENTICAL in design. I have no idea what could be causing this but it is clear to me that this is not a burn in issue, as I've tried the fix for burn in to no avail.
Good luck with this. I'll be taking mine to a service center at some point as well.

  • "water spots" in large areas of a single color

When a large area of sky is in a photograph, I see what appear to be waterspots in the area, but the glass is clean.  Is this a sensor problem? It happened with my previous Canon DSLR as well. I use the 100-400L lens on a 60D. Thanks.

I should add, I think, that the spots aren't specs but are quite large and transparent--more like round smudges. I clean them up later with a clone tool, but this is less than ideal.
In principle, it could be lens flare spots, but those are pretty distinctive and not very repeatable, since they depend on the angle of the incident light. They could be actual water spots if the sensor was ever exposed to rain. A few years ago there was a particular Nikon DSLR that had a problem with oil spots; the mirror mechanism was over-lubricated and threw oil droplets onto the sensor. But I've never heard of that happening on a Canon. If a professional sensor cleaning doesn't cure the problem, it would probably be wise to send it to a Canon shop. They're not cheap (unless you're a CPS member), but they do a good job.

Iphone 5 got wet last week.  Been in rice until today.  It turned on and worked fine, I could see a water spot in the middle but still worked fine, 3 hours in it shut down to the black screen with apple logo.  Screen stays up for 10 seconds ago and then goes black and then black screen with apple logo comes back.  Any ideas what to do?

At this point it's likely that the iPhone has suffered damage and you'll have to take or send it to Apple for replacement. If you have AppleCare+ coverage on the iPhone, the cost will be US $49. Otherwise the cost will be US $229.

  • When I try to turn on my 27'' iMac I get a circle that appears with a line through it does this mean my Drive is shot?

when I try to turn on my 27'' iMac I get a circle that appears with a line through it does this mean my Drive is shot?

Not necessarily. We use a product called Scannerz to test hard drives. They have a book on hard drive troubleshooting that you can download here:
    http://scsc-online.com/Downloads.html
Scroll to the bottom of the web page and download the Hard Drive Troubleshooting book. You won't want to read the whole thing, just the section describing your problem. Most of the stuff they describe in their "advanced" section requires unit disassembly, and the way that section is written I think they're assuming people know how to take units apart without any instructions - in other words it's not written "for the rest  of us." Most of the resets they describe that you might need can be done by anyone.
If you end up buying Scannerz, I would NOT recommend Scannerz-Lite, I'd go with Scannerz with FSE-Lite. It costs about $14.00 more but they keep enhancing the product and adding more applications to it, all free if you own Scannerz w/FSE or FSE-Lite. I'd also avoid FSE all together unless you know a fair amount about the operating system, files, processes, Unix type path names, etc. etc.
If you're lucky that will end up being nothing more than a reset.

  • Impressive iMac 24" Dark Spots

Sorry to repeat. But I don't understand why what I posted yesterday disappeared.
My story is long to write down. I hope any of you who got experience with dark spots/patterns on iMac screens can help me to look into the problem I appreciate your help.
The associated pictures of this post can be found here in my google album:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/zhangchao/IMacDarkSpots?feat=directlink
I purchased my iMac 24 inch in July 2008. After using it for 2 months, I noticed some dark patterns started to appear on the machine’s 24 inch screen. I should have taken it to Apple back then if I wasn’t using it all the time.
These patterns become clearer if you set the background to white. A lot of iMac users have reported similar problems. Actually, if you google "iMac dark spot", you can find a lot of such posts. The patterns I got are very similar to what’s reported here in the very first picture here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1915086&tstart=15
I contacted Apple two weeks ago when I finally got some time free. I was asked to go to the Apple Store here in Milwaukee’s Bayshore mall and left my machine there for 3 days for them to investigate. When I went to the store to pick up my Mac, I talked to the gentleman who did the repair and investigation work and a manager. They basically told me that I got the patterns because there was some weird “white substance” everywhere in my machine. The substance was circulated between the layers of glass cover and the LCD etc appearing to us as the dark spots. However, it’s easy to remove the stuff between the LCD and the glass cover but impossible to remove the stuff which got into the LCD.
They strongly suspect the white substance came from where I placed my machine (my living room indeed). They don’t think the “white substance” is hair or fiber. It’s like pure dust and very subtle. Since they believe the cause of the problem is environmental, they will not fix it for me under my warranty.
But I disagree and I think the white substance indeed comes from inside of the machine.
Overall, I think my apartment is pretty clean. The machine is always placed on a wooden table which I clean every week. There aren’t a lot of things around my iMac so it gets good air circulation.
My apartment is located in an apartment community. Hundreds of people live here. The community is not new (20+ years old) and is professionally maintained. I talked to the manager of the community and some of my neighbors, none of them have ever heard of anything similar.
In my apartment, I have never been able to observe the "white substance" anywhere aside from the iMac. I did some investigation into the case, placing some blue tape under the hole of the back of the iMac where air comes out. After doing that for over one week, the only place that I can observe any "white substance" is on the piece of blue tape. The pictures in the album will make everything clear. This makes it really hard for me to believe the problem is environmental. In addition to that, if the "white substance" is so subtle and so weird (as if the only purpose of its very existence is to get iMac into trouble. Other computers and electronic devices in my apartment are completely fine), how can so many people got similar dark patterns on their screens?
However, Apple doesn't take this as evidences that the problem is not environmental. Right now, I am gonna buy air purifiers and hire professional indoor air inspectors to help me to find where the trouble is.
I read several posts re "iMac dark spots" problems. Some lucky guys simply got their screens replaced by Apple and others were just left with no help.None of them actually gives detailed explanation of the cause of their problems. I notice most of reported problems happen to iMac 24 inch machines shipped in early and mid 2008.
If you have any insights, please let me know. I greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Since you purchased your iMac in July of 2008, you are right on the edge of your one year limited warranty.
Go here https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do and see if you iMac is still within the one year limited warranty. You will need the serial number which is located... click the Apple Menu then click About This Mac. Where you see the Version number 10.5 click there twice. The serial number will be displayed there. If you can't see it there, open the System Profiler. (Applications/Utilities) Select Hardware on the left. The serial number is on the right.
If it were me, I'd take the iMac back to that Apple store and *ask to speak to a manager*. Tell them you are dissatisfied with the outcome of your first visit and want your iMac repaired.
Make sure and take in your original purchase receipt from when you purchased the iMac and any other pertinent paperwork.
*"They basically told me that I got the patterns because there was some weird “white substance” everywhere in my machine."*
    I don't believe that.
This problem started within 2 months of using your iMac. It would take the force of an F1 tornado to get that much dust inside the monitor that fast.
If you still can't get that Apple store to repair your iMac, if you can, go to another Apple store OR find an Apple certified repair provider. Perhaps you know of a friend with a Mac that might be able to give you some recommendations for a place to take it. But make sure they are Apple certified.

  • When I try to import songs/playlists to my iPhone 6, grey spotted circle shows up next to most songs and they won't play. Help

I just set up my iPhone 6. I made a full backup from my 5 to iTunes. Everything was backed up and transferred except any of my music. Simple enough to do it manually, I thought and tried. But when I transfer a playlist from iTunes to the iPhone most songs show up in light grey with a dotted circle next to them once they are on the iPhone list and they won't play.
There are lots of threats about grey dotted circles from the past. Does anybody know what the issue is? I have the newest iTunes version and IOS version (8.02) for the 6. Why is this happening and how can this be fixed? This is all my music on my mac and most of it was on my previous iPhone 5, so why won't it play on the 6?
    Thanks!

    OK,
I was asking a little fast. It did indeed not work for a little while (up to 20 minutes) but once I started chatting with apple support it started resolving itself. The grey dotted circles mean two things. 1) the computer was taking some time to transfer the songs onto the phone (quite some time for some songs) but then they appeared on my phone. and 2) those songs I purchased, I can listen to on my phone and my imac, but they will remain unable to play (grey dotted circle) when I look at them on iTunes in my iphone playlist. So, I can play it on regular itunes or on my iphone, but not in my iphone folder on itunes. I hope that makes sense.
So problem got resolved for me. I hope this helps.

  • How do I make a circle pattern in text fill?

I'm looking to make a gradient cirlce pattern to fill some text in with. I've looked quite extensively for a tutorial or a quick how-to of something similar but I was unsuccessful. Maybe I'm not using the right search words. Anyway, what I'm looking to accomplish is something like what's in this link.
    http://ih0.redbubble.net/image.12821618.5749/fig,white,shortsleeve_one_piece,ffffff.u2.jpg
I'm sure doing this is fairly simple but I'm new to illustrator. If someone could help me out or point me to a tutorial of this or something similar, I'd greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks

    This "might" help...
Draw the first circle, the smallest one.
Now Ctrl Alt D (win) or Cmnd Option D (mac) or use the menu to select Object>transform>each and set horizontal and vertical percentages to your preference (say 110%) and hit copy.
Now Ctrl or Cmnd D to duplicate as many concentric expanding circles as you want. This only takes a few seconds.

  • IMac 24" with intermittent circle/slash screen at start up issue

    Hi Everyone,
Yesterday while listening to music on iTunes, my 3 year old iMac suddenly froze up. No sound, no mouse, no keyboard, nothing...I had to hold down the power switch to turn it off.
I powered it back on and up popped a white screen and a circle with a slash icon. I powered down again, unplugged the machine and let it sit for a while. Powered it up again with same results. Ugh.
At that point I reinstalled the OS (using the archive the previous system option). The install went fine and everything was back up a running..or so I thought....
Now every time I initially turn the iMac on, it goes to the circle/slash screen and hangs. I then power down using the power button. Press the power button again, it boots as normal and seems to work fine. Wacky.
Does this sound like a hardware issue or software issue? Hard drive failure? Format drive and reinstall from scratch?
    Anyway, thanks in advance!

I would recommend doing an Apple Hardware Test to see if it is hardware. By the way you are describing the symptoms it could be a hard drive. If you purchased AppleCare the machine will be covered. If it is hardware then make an appointment with your local Apple Authorized Service Provder and they can get you an estimate.

  • Connect PS3 to latest 27": 3,2 GHz iMac - possible?

    Hi guys,
Just moved to Zurich and left my FullHD screen back home - now looking for a new iMac 3.2GHz, 27" and using it as external monitor for my PS3.
Did some reserach but didnt get an ultimate answer if this is possible or not, seems like there are solutions out there that solve this problem but not entirley sure which one is the best/ if it works with the iMacs 27" that Apple is currently stocking.
Can anyone help? Not sure if that is of interest but i live in Europe so this might effect the adapters I require?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
As far as I know, you need Thunderbolt to use the mid 2011 & up iMacs as a monitor...

  • Could my iMac possibly just have a temporary case of heat stroke?

After working on my iMac off and on all day, I left it up and running when I stepped out of the room briefly and returned to find it had shut down. This particular Mac is networked to a PowerMac G4 and dual core iMac, both of which seem to be working fine .. . (as was this one, until this problem started).
Hitting the power button did not get it up and running, although the chime seemed to work; however the screen remained black. It was hard to tell, but I also think the power switch was working a little erratically, because at various times it seemed like it required eiher a "forced quit" and restart, restart with the shift key on — or sometimes just a restart alone to ring the chimes. Bottom line though, was that while the on button sometimes lights up, the screen remains black.
Unfortunately, my optical slot drive died about six months ago which is how I ended up with the dual core iMac — but so far have not used it much, since most of the software I normally rely on is not yet available for the new model. So instead, I have been switching back and forth from one computer to the next, as needed. However, because of the drive problem, I have been unable to boot from either the hardware diagnostic or system CDs to look for or repair possible errors.
Although the two iMacs currently are connected via Firewire, I have not yet taken time to see if I can transfer and save the most important data — hoping to get all systems up and working properly first.
More importantly, I'm also hoping one of you Mac wizards will tell me the problem is just weather-related, since the temp outdoor has been in the low to mid-90s all week and probably even hotter indoors. Is there any point in just letting things cool down overnight instead of repeatedly hitting the "on button" . . . or does it sound like my goose is really cooked?
Anyone have another idea of how I can rescusitate this machine?

    Update:
Sorry to report that while I waited in frustration for some sort of response, my iMac gave up and died.
Since initially it looked like it might "only" be a power problem (not worth repairing, as the CD drive also pooped out about 6 months ago), I was arranging to have the drive reincarnated as an external drive, only to learn that the drive, too, was on its last legs. I have no way of knowing what's on the drive, so am still trying to decide if it's worth paying for data recovery. Luckily I think have backups of the most important doocs.

  • Migrating from 10.6.4 MacBook to a 10.4.11 iMac, possible over network?

I've had an iMac for a few years but after getting a macbook this past xmas I rarely use it. I decided to get my iMac up to speed with my macbook using migration assistant. I used it to setup my macbook when i got it with no issues. So after running migration assistant to transfer back to my iMac it duplicated users. So I had 2 users with my name, 2 with my wife's etc. So I thought I'd be smart and I booted from the disc that came with my iMac (osx 10.4), deleted everything, ran all the software updates and tried using migration assistant again. My issue is this, Migration assistant on the iMac, under the from another mac option will only recognize a firewire cable. My macbook (came with osx 10.6) doesn't have a firewire port. Am I missing something? Is there a way for me to do this with a cat5/6 cable? I've tried having them on the same network and using file sharing uploaded the entire macbook HDD onto the iMac, but it wont let me boot from it. I also am unable to copy the macbooks HDD onto the macbook itself. What do I ned to do to get htis going, i've scoured all the forums I can find and have found no answers that work for me. I'm not a computer whiz and I've tried everything I know how to do.

Though I'm a little confused too, Migration Assistant is probably designed to use Firewire for a good reason, though creative network solutions might be possible. (I stopped using simple ethernet cable when Apple Talk stopped being supported.)
People are know by your computers as simple integers. They used to start with 501. So 501 on machine 1 could be 'Fred', 501 on machine 2 could be 'Jim'. I'm guessing it just converted, say, the incoming 501 account to 502. Don't know if that helps.
Firewire isn't needed for DVD transfers, is it? I've never tried this, but I should anticipate that it would stop and ask you to insert a new disc.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21992/burn
Copies MacBook.dmg to DVDs just by creating the image & dropping it on the 'copy' window. I take it you've tried rebuilding the iMac with 10.4.11, copying MacBook.dmg to the iMac's hard drive, and telling MigrationAssistant that that folder is a DVD folder? (Devices are all just folders to Unix.)
I've used this application only once, to move Applications from 10.4 to 10.3, and it worked perfectly. I archive or backup all other data, so I just copied it or restored it to the older machine.

  • Possible to display percentage pattern as num{zz9.9%}

Is it possible to display a percentage as 2.5%?  I tried to adjust the pattern, but it doesn't seem to work.
    Thanks, Anne

The percentage pattern will accept values between 0 and 1.
So the value 0.75 will be displayed as 75%.
If you want to enter 75 directly put the % sign into quotes.
    num{zz9.99'%'}
