24" iMac screen issue

Hi all, just returned my new 24" iMac after a problem with the speaker and I have a nice fresh one. The problem now is when playing a DVD through either Front Row or DVD Player there appears to be a light at the bottom of the screen creeping onto the image. The top edge is perfectly black to the edge but where the dock usually is there's a broken light source like something behind the alu casing is causing a glow to creep through the screen casing. I can't remember seeing this on the model I returned. If it's like this on all models then I can live with it but otherwise it'll drive me demented.
Thanks

  • New iMac: Screen Issues and Noisy Hard Drive

    Hello,
I'm writing regarding my new 27" iMac which I purchased just under a week ago (spec: 3.1GHz Intel Core i5, 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM).
When I got my iMac home and unboxed it, all was fine, however once I had began to install some applications and use them, I noticed an unusual issue with the screen. I had a Skype window open on the left hand side of my screen, with an ongoing chat, Obviously, the chat 'stream' was moving, but the menu items on the far left remained the same. The iMac had been on for about 10mins, with the Skype window open for the same duration. After which, I opened iPhoto, and made it full screen, filling my screen with a dark grey background. I could still see the outline of the text from my Skype window through the iPhoto window. Thinking the window may have been semi-transparent, I closed the Skype window, however when I re-fullscreened iPhoto, the test was still there, as if it was burnt into the screen.
I understand the concept of screen burn, but surely this shouldn't happen after just 10mins? It's nothing permanent, as it fades away again within another 5mins or so, but it is annoying knowing that I can't leave a window open for very long without worrying I will have text burnt into my screen for a period of time. As a graphic designer, I could be working on images that are dark, and likewise, I don't want to see remains of my chat or emails over the top of my design work.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is this an issue that can be repaired by myself (eg. installing a firmware update, although I have all the latest updates from Software Update)? Or should I just return my iMac to the store and get them to look at it? I'm worried that if I take it back, they may fail to see the issue, as the lighing is a lot different in the store to at home.
The other issue I am experiencing is I have a very noisy hard drive, that seems to click and make a grumbling noise rather a lot. Obviously at times when the computer is working hard, this is to be expected (I think), although most of the time it is grumbling away whilst I'm just browsing in Safari with one tab open.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, taken it back and has a successful replacement? I've read that it could be to do with Mac OS X Lion, because people have reported that their hard drive ran silently on Snow Leopard but has got noisier with Lion. Should I wait for a Lion update before returning it? Other than the issues above, everything is fine.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to someone being able to shine some light on my issues.

    Thanks for the advice.
Today, I returned my iMac to the Apple Premium Resellers where I purchased it. The helpful chap there looked at my screen and acknowledged the issue, before giving me a brand new iMac.
My previous model came with Snow Leopard pre-installed, which I upgraded to Lion. This new, second iMac is a relatively new one as it has Lion pre-installed. Feeling hopeful, I've just arrived home and unpackaged my new computer.
The result? EXACTLY the same issue. My Twitter window on the far left of my display has been open for no longer than about 7 or 8 mins, and I can clearly see the display pictures from my follwees burnt into the screen when I full screen a dark app like Snow Leopard.
I'm wondering whether this is a Lion issue? Should I wait for a software update before returning it again? It's not something that's going to be annoying on a day-to-day basis, but now that I know it's doing it, I can't help but keep checking when I open iPhoto.
PEOPLE WITH NEW 27" iMAC's: Would you please perform the following test for me and let me know the results?
    1. Open up a white backgrounded application, such as Twitter, Skype, or Safari.
    2. Leave it on screen (anywhere, but far left seems to be worst) for about 5 to 10mins.
    3. Open up iPhoto with it's grey full screen background, or set your wallpaper to a flat colour dark grey.
    4. Now minimise the white backgrounded windows, and switch to a grey background with no windows in front of it.
    5. Look carefully at your screen: can you still see an outline of/text from the window in the position that it was, like it's burnt into the screen?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can perform this for me.

  • 21.5 iMac screen issue.

    Hey gents,
I have what might be a bit of a problem with my 21.5 iMac, its a 2011 model, so I have no warranty or Apple Care on it.
On to the issue now, I just noticed, that I have some spots on the screen that are a bit tinted, they look like someone touched the display or something. I don’t really know how to describe it, but here is a picture.
But I suspect that something happened with the pixels and that the cause is heat, because from what I recall the power supply is around in that area, so maybe the heat damaged some pixels in that area or something.
What do you gents think ?

Take it in for service. If you purchased AppleCare then yes you do have AppleCare coverage, it's good for 3 years.

  • IMac Screen issue! Yea, what's new? Is there a difinitive answer?

My father in-laws iMac (15") has a totally black screen. When you power it up you can hear the start up tone but no picture what so-ever. Here's the important part of this issue (besides the fact that it's not working properly)... I got to get it fixed or he's going back to the PC world! HELP! He's 79 and is in no way going to change over that quickly. The iMac has been effortless and easy up to this point.

  • IMac Screen Issues

I recently had my iMac serviced at the closest Apple Store... an hours drive for me. It had a hazy discoloration in the upper left and right corners of the screen. The tech told me the solution was to have the screen replaced...for $600! Fortunately, I bought the AppleCare Plan so this cost was covered. Three days later my iMac was repaired. I drove back home eager to plug in my computer. When it booted up I had a thick vertical green line directly in the middle of my screen. What gives? I'd rather have the corners discolored slightly than this glaring green line! Did they not even test it when they installed the screen? For everything that Apple does right, this is a huge wrong! Can anyone tell me what the problem might be and if there is something I might be able to do without having to drive 4 hours total and be without my computer for several days?

Yes they didn't install it right.  Call Applecare and tell them the inconvenience involved in shlepping it to your nearest repair center.  Ask them to mail you a box to ship it back.  Usually their repairs take less time.   Ask how long might it tske.  Whst probsbly happened is the inverter cable or board was damaged in the repair, and they didn't test the repair properly after finishing the repair to see their error.  And if they won't normally do an iMac, ask to speak to a manager.

  • IMac screen issues and iPhoto issues

    Hello all,
My girlfriend just bought the imac with the 21.5' screen and recently everytime I scroll the screen gets pixilated.  And for some reason, now on iPhoto the thumbnails come up but when I click on them no picture comes up to full size. It's just a black screen.  Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • IMac screen issues-turns black then to log-in screen

I own a late 2102 iMac, 21.5 inch. 2.9GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB memory. Storage=1 Terabyte. Running Yosemite 10.10.1. Several times in the past two months while I am using my iMac, my screen has become very bright, then suddenly switches to a black screen with just the cursor showing. It then switches to the user login screen. Today I was just syncing my iPhone 5S to iTunes. Nothing radical. In the past, I was using Word or sending an iMessage. Instead of logging back on as the same user, I opted to restart. When I restarted, iTunes opened back up as did PowerPoint, which was random since I hadn't been using PowerPoint nor was it even open in the Dock. I have restarted the iMac on several occasions using Command-R and ran Disk Utilities with no problems showing up. Has anyone else experienced the same or similar problem? Is it a Yosemite problem or a hardware problem? Any solutions?

    1) You need to Find the crack on Sim 3 game on Google and Copy and replace the File with new crack and problem will get solved.
    Try downclocking your >>GPU<<
try lowering it more and keep testing with each one. If you have another power supply test with that(but its HIGHLY unlikely that its your psu). But overclocked cards demand more power as far as i know and it might be getting tough for the psu to handle.
And is the space freeing up on only c drive? It happens all the time. temp files getting deleted and all that. but virus scan and chkdsk wouldnt hurt..................
Take pleasure in knowing that your problem is nothing compared to what most people i stated above are facing. they cant for more than ten minutes. your crash occurred only watch serials once and a after a long time right? see if it happens again. it might get more frequent in which case you problem is very .....problematic.

  • Screen issue imac early 2009

    Hello,
I have recently performed the upgrade of my early 2009 20 inch imac optical drive with an SSD from OWC.
Everything worked flawlesly regarding the OS installation and boot.
However, since opening the imac I got a very annoying issue with the screen:
The screen has a washed out color as if there was a white or grey film on the screen (almost not readable) with very much electric noise and flicker, visible on the desktop pattern.
I initially had Snow Leopard installed, and with that OSX the screen was problematic after booting up, but return to normal (high contrast & resolution) after putting the mac to sleep mode and immediately waking up. I consequently upgraded to Mavericks OSX and now the screen always has the above issue making it impossible to use.
It is not the GPU as I have connected an external screen and it worked flawlesly, but the iMac screen itself. Do you have any possible hint about resolving this problem? I have plugged and unplugged the inverters a thousand times since yesterday but with no success.
Everything appears as if there were a bad contact somewhere generating noise.
Could you please help me resolve the problem?
It is not related to the SSD either, I have tested the screen with and without the SSD connected but the issue remains.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Is anyone having issues with 27" imac screen calibrating?

I may have to post this on the imac forum, but figured i'd ask the photographers here using aperture. I've heard that calibrating the monitor on a new 27" imac is not very easy, or can't be done because of the lack of adjustments on the screen itself, and also that the imac screen can't produce neutral whites? Has anyone had any experience with this, or info they can share about this? Thanks!

I'm using a Spyder3Pro with the new iMac and haven't run into problems. I did bring down the brightness three notches before calibrating - that LED is very bright.
I know there were problems with the previous generation's glossy screens (too bright) but I've gone from the old matte version to this one and I'm loving it.

  • The Windows 7 Black Screen Issue

I am putting in Bootcamp with a Windows 7 install. I checked these forums and made sure I had all my prep work done.
I referenced article TS3173 and downloaded the neccessary drivers for 7, formatted a 16GB SD Card as FAT Bootable and copied the drivers and autounattend.xml files onto the root of the drive.
THe installation as going as planned but at the end I'm still ending up with a black screen. Windows is installed ok but on the restart after" Preparing for FIrst Use" comes up the screen goes black.
Obviously, the drivers are not being installed from the SD card, I tried it on a USB External driver as well. Am I missing something here? I read every post I could find on it and I can't see where I am doing anything incorrectly.
    Thanks
    Tom

You don't need Paragon or another NTFS driver. That may work (I've used it, but I was using a full hard drive anyway to begin with).
    Apple's method:

*My iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) displays a black screen during installation of Microsoft Windows 7 using the Boot Camp Assistant. How do I fix it?*
The Windows 7 installer does not include required graphics or Bluetooth drivers for this computer. To obtain the necessary drivers and resolve the issue, see this article (creating the SD card and drivers for the "black screen" issue).

  • Any external monitors as good as imac screen for text?

    hi all.
this is my first mac.  it's a new 21.5inch imac with a 2.7ghz i5 proc running OS X 10.7.3 and 12 Gigs of RAM (8 Gigs from crucial for $50, who can resist?)
i've got it hooked up to an external samsung syncmaster B2330 running in 1920x1080, which is this monitor's native resolution.  works fine.  it's hooked up via the dvi port on the screen via the mini-displayport to dvi adapter for the mac.  i switch this monitor to the vga port when i want to use it as my pc monitor also running at 1920x1080.  there is a source button on the monitor.  very convenient.
the issue is that they text on this screen when coming from the mac is not as clear was when coming from the pc despite the fact that the vga port provides much less bandwidth than the dvi port the mac uses.  i've read that the mac and the pc display text on screen using different methods.  my pc uses an nvidia display graphics card.  i believe mac use ati based hardware.
there appears to be much more interpolation when displaying text from the mac.  perhaps this is a text size issue i'm not sure.  either way i read a lot on this monitor and need it to be as good as possible for that purpose.
so the question is, does anyone have experience with an external monitor that is as good as the imac screen for text display.  i can't use the thuderbolt display or a cinema display since they don't switch to different ports allowing my to use a single external monitor for two machines.  i'm willing to spend up if there is a reason to do so.  i'm on these computers a lot.  i work from home with some regularity and my job is all about reading.
    any help is appreciated.
    best, c

I have an dell 24" lcd as 2ed monitor and text look as clear as the imacs screen
but it having a t-nfilm lcd panel vs. the imacs ips panel the colour and contast look worse
    but text look as clear
and it look the same when I boot up in win7 using bootcamp

  • New 24" iMac Screen Brightness Problem

My new 24" iMac's screen is much brighter on the left side than on the right. What should I do? Surely this is not normal for an iMac. Did I get a defective screen? Please help! Thanks in advance!

I got a 24" iMac from Amazon and noticed the screen gradient after a few hours of use. Then I also noticed a stuck pixel in the middle of the screen. I was very bummed and after reading through forums I realized that this seems to be a common problem. I was getting prepared for 3 "geniuses" gathering around my iMac telling me that they can't see anything wrong with it and then me trying to sell it on ebay with a $500 loss.
But things turned out quite different for me.
I took the iMac to one of our 5! Apple Stores here in Houston and explained the gradient and the stuck pixel to the Genius. He turned the computer on, looked at it for about five seconds and says "yep", turns it off and starts typing away on his MacBook. Five minutes later I asked him what he was doing and he goes: "Oh, I'm replacing it." Me: "the screen?" Him:" No, the whole thing!"
I was overjoyed, I almost couldn't believe it.
They brought out a brand new box and I asked him if they would let me transfer my files. They agreed and handed me a FW cable. I checked the new iMac for any screen issues and it looked perfect. So I started the setup and let it do its thing. I decided to go get something eat with my daughter while the iMacs were transferring files. Got back an hour later and it was done. The new iMac started up in my user account and everything. But then I noticed a black dot that almost looked like a dead pixel but it appeared to be right behind the glass and not on the screen itself. I asked another genius (the first one had left) if he could remove the glass and try to clean it. Sure enough he went to get the suction cups and popped off the glass. The black dust speck was visible and easily removed. The glass got re-installed and I packed the new iMac back into the box.
I expressed my feeling of satisfaction and headed home.
At home I thoroughly inspected the screen again and it appears to be nearly perfect.
I'm very happy now. Apple sells their products for a premium and I my case I received premium customer service. Way to go!

  • IMac Screen Failure

    Hey,
I was just wondering if any of you are experiencing screen failures as noted in the link below? If so, is it the aluminum iMacs, or is it the white ones?
    http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/11/30/imac.screen.failure/
    Thanks!!

    Hi autiger
Which iMac do you have and are you having any display issues?
I don't believe it can be jinxed, so I'll do a little bragging here. My 17" Early Core Duo w/Apple Care purchased Jan. 21 2006 is great and has no gradient light/dark, no dead pixels and only a very very small backlight bleed. The sRGB and Adobe RGB (1998) profiles were OK, but the display seamed a little washed out. After more than a few tries, and some good advice from Barbara B and others here I was able to set a new profile that is much richer than any of the factory supplied profiles.
All display manufactures and computer system will have there share of issues, some more that others. I have had more than a few Apple's over the last 20+ years without a single hardware problem. I do have to admit though, that with the all-in-one Intel I bought Apple Care for the first time ever???

  • 24" 2008 iMac screen going black

My 24" 2008 iMac screen keeps going black then coming back after a while. What temperature would it need to get to in order to knock out the display? I have iStat.
Also, if the screen fails due to graphics card or other component, is it possible to connect an external display to use it until I can upgrade to a mini?
    Cheers.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
