24" imac screen too bright!!!

i Turned down the brightness as low as it can go, but it is still the brightess thing i ever saw! and it is hurting my eyes. Is there anything else i can do to stop that bright light from killing my eyes?

Thank you! I got a 24" iMac 2 wks ago and have been suffering eye, neck and back strain ever since. I'll try the above suggestions for the brightness. But the inability to lower the monitor to an ergonomically correct position is a serious oversight on Apple's part. I'm debating taking a saw to my very nice computer desk.

  • Is The 24" iMac Screen Too Bright For Longevity ?

I have just been in an Apple Store testing both the 20" and 24".
I had heard that the 24" screen was brighter but assumed that, like so many claims, it would only be a marginal difference.
I was amazed to see that it was considerably brighter, making the 20" look extremely dull by comparison.
I checked and found that both machines were on maximum brightness. Even set to minimum, the 24" seemed brighter.
I don't know about LCDs but with "normal" electric bulbs, over-running them can give a brilliant but brief life.
Are these new monitors naturally bright or are they being over-run and likely to burn out just after the warranty expires?
    Ian.

I realise we are dealing with a different technology.
Does that mean that the brightness will have no detrimental effect on longevity?

    Sounds like a power issue.

  • Screen too bright at night

I've just bought a 24" iMac and find the screen far too bright in the evening and at night when I often work. I have the contrast and brightness down to the lowest settings in System Preferences, but the screen remains so dazzling that it hurts the eyes. On my MacBook Pro I can slide the brightness down to black if I want, so why not the iMac - or have I missed something?
All thoughts about solving this problem - or suggestions for software to reduce the brightness - greatly appreciated.

I would like to thank Lenn and Dennis for your suggestions, all of which I have now tried. I've taken so long to respond because I wanted to wait 24 hours - and another night - to see if one is better than another. Changing the screen profile made a very small difference, and at first Brightness seemed to do a better job, but the overall winner in terms of flexibility is undoubtedly Shades, which I'm using right now.
    Thanks again, both of you!

  • Is Your Monitor (Especially iMac 24") Too Bright?  Try "Shades" - FREE!

A number of iMac 24" users have complained that the screen can be too bright - even when dimmed the maximum amount.
A comparatively new forum member - tysohsg - posted details (on the iMac forum) of a free program called "Shades" which gives fine tuning right down to complete black.
Having nothing better to do (!!!!!!!!!!), I downloaded and tested it and found that it does everything anyone would desire with no apparent side effects.
It is operated by an inconspicuous slider which can be positioned anywhere on the screen either horizontally or vertically.
Alternatively you can get rid of the on-screen slider and operate it as a menu item - just like the audio volume control.

  • 24" IMAC Display Too Bright

I am still doing DD on changing from WinTel to Apple. I have viewed both the 20 inch and 24 inch models at a local reseller. I have heard of several complaints that the 24" is too bright. Is there any validity to this complaint? Can the Brightness be easily adjusted? And a third question are there advantages to using a local reseller rather than a purchase directly from Apple re the net?

    Hello,
The iMac 24" isn't an iMac (Flat Panel) in Apple's eyes so those of us in this forum won't be nearly so familar with specific issues like the brightness of the display on the 24" iMac. You should re-post your question here.
Of course the local retailer you can speak to face-to-face about your requirements and return it for support in the very unlikely event you have any issues. The online store may well be a very little cheaper and will probably have better build-to-order option.

  • Background screen too bright

The white background screen for messages & emails are entirely too bright & bland.   Will there be an update where the user can select their own color background for emails & text messages?

I agree with you, the background for e-mails and the calendar are too bright.  PLEASE APPLE, give us an update to make the calendar more useable.  I absolutely hate it.

  • Are all Imac screens unevenly bright, or just faulty batch?

Can anyone confirm that they have a 24" Imac that has a uniformly bright screen, i.e. when scrutinizing it with a solid grey or white background, you cannot see any areas of the screen that are noticeably brighter than the others?
I really want to buy a 24" Imac, but having tried two that had an unacceptable brightness gradient from left to right, and having been told by the Apple Store owner that their display model also has the same ueneveness, plus having read the many posts on this board about the same issue, I am beginning to think that perhaps all the new Imac screens have this problem.
I'd appreciate it if anyone who owns a 24" alu Imac with a good screen could post in this thread.
    Many thanks!

Im surprised mrtotes can't see any gradient problems on his Alu iMac! There are VERY few people reporting that their 20" or 24" iMac doesn't have a gradient issue.
From other iMac customers, including those on these forums, it seems that it is not necessarily a faulty batch, but a range-wide issue. Whether Apple decides to provide a fix for current iMacs and/or produces new batches without the issue, is simply unknown at present.
I have also read that Apple's response is that the iMac is designed for consumer-level customers and not for professionals. Professionals including graphic designers like myself will likely disagree with this. I am at a graphic design degree course at the moment and my lecturers also disagree with this statement (Especially seeing as all our workstations at university are previous generation iMacs!). The iMacs are definitely acceptable, and probably excellent for non-professional use, but if you're interested in correct colour and brightness levels for things such as design work, then the current generation iMac is now unfortunately not suitable for this sort of professional use.
I am not providing any facts here, just gathered information. I am awaiting a replacement for my 20" Alu iMac but I am certainly not expecting it to be any different.

  • GP70 screen too bright

Hi, I just bought a GP70 2PE with Core i7 and so far I quite like it. I installed Windows 7 x64 instead of the default Windows 8.
However, I have one problem with it - the screen is very bright - even on the lowest setting, the screen is brighter than my old laptop (a 9 year old Acer 5020) on the highest setting. While a bright screen will be great for outdoors use (or in other brightly lit places), using the laptop in a dark place hurts my eyes (while the old laptop and the CRT monitor of my main PC do not).
Opening the graphics control panel and setting brightness.contrast to minimum helps a bit but makes the image look bad. Is thee a way to reduce the backlight brightness (without opening the laptop and modding the backlight circuit, which I could do, but do not want to lose the warranty)?

I would like to thank Lenn and Dennis for your suggestions, all of which I have now tried. I've taken so long to respond because I wanted to wait 24 hours - and another night - to see if one is better than another. • Are 24" iMac Screens Too Big for regular tasks?

I'll be playing a lot of games and watching a lot of movies on my new iMac (reason I want 24") and I'll probably become more productive. But, does it get annoying or do you feel you have too much screen real estate when you do things like browse the web on a 24" iMac? I've browsed the web on a screen probably around 20"-22" at school and it seems pretty annoying to browse the web on it. I'd probably get used to the extra screen space, though. What're your opinions? Thanks!

No offense, but all I can think is that the only way it'd be too big is if you a beginner who only every has a single page / window of anything open.
    A few loose thoughts:
Once used to a big screen, you'll be very reluctant to return to a small one. Trust me. I was forced to move back from a 19" CRT to a 15" LCD at one point. Ugh. Ugh Ugh!
The screen is wide enough that you have to rotate your head to see it all if you're at typing distance (i.e. able to just touch the screen with an extended arm). If you're like me, working (long periods of time) with your head at an angle will cause problems; I developed a persistent shoulder muscle issue from this many years ago (in the days of the "dumb" terminals!) So if you're working on them all day, this may be something to watch out for--? In particular, note that the centre of the main typing portion of the keyboard is not the middle of the whole keyboard, but off to the left.
Wide, large, screens are excellent if you need to display things side-by-side, e.g. a webpage or PDF document and a word processor if you're researching material.
Of course, its also the "right" layout for DVDs too! Its not all work...

  • B510 - screen too bright ?

I'm having a strange problem with my B510. It seems to me that the screen is way to bright, even with the brightness level at its lowest. I use this system mainly for work. When I work with eg. my stock charts, which are plotted on black background the picture quality is perfect. But when I browse the websites (especially the ones with with background) and with the 1920x1080 resolution leaving plenty of white margin space in the browser - I feel as if I was starring straight into the sun!
    So my 2 questions are:
    1. Did any of you experience this problem or is it more of my personal preference ?
    2. Is there any way to decrease the brightness of the screen ? I have switched off the dynamic brightness system and used the front cover button to set the brightness at the minimum but the lamp at the back of the screen is still glowing like crazy. I tried to change some settings in the ATI control panel but there were not to many advanced options.
    Any help ?
    Best Regards.

  • Screen too bright!

    Same as many.
I downgraded my BIOS but to no avail?
How do I downgrade the EC or get a refund? Thanks

It would seem that the "BIOS upgrade" is diddling something somewhere, since more than one person is reporting that downgrades do not restore the old lower minimum brightness setting. It could be that the BIOS installer is doing something more than just a simple BIOS replacement, that is, it's setting some unknown setting that is not restored with a downgrade to the old BIOS. Perhaps a registry setting? Would be nice if that's it and we could determine where it is, cause then this problem is easy to fix. However, I doubt this is the case, because I've searched the registry for a setiing for the minimum brightness and I can't find it. I've searched the internet for info on a registry setting and can't find it.
Also, FWIW, I've got a desktop app I wrote that I added a slider to that changes the brightness, and what I discovered is that the lower brightness settings are all the same. In other words, as you go down in settings, the minimum brightness is achieved at, say, 20, and then 19,18,17....... 0 are all the same brightness. It's floored at a non-zero setting, which seems patently wrong.
Padgett: Are you saying that the Intel Platform install after the BIOS upgrade restored your minimum brightness setting to the older lower value?

  • Is anyone having issues with 27" imac screen calibrating?

I may have to post this on the imac forum, but figured i'd ask the photographers here using aperture. I've heard that calibrating the monitor on a new 27" imac is not very easy, or can't be done because of the lack of adjustments on the screen itself, and also that the imac screen can't produce neutral whites? Has anyone had any experience with this, or info they can share about this? Thanks!

I'm using a Spyder3Pro with the new iMac and haven't run into problems. I did bring down the brightness three notches before calibrating - that LED is very bright.
I know there were problems with the previous generation's glossy screens (too bright) but I've gone from the old matte version to this one and I'm loving it.

  • Dimming iMac screen

I've been using powerbooks for the last few years, and the dimmer keys will gradually dim the screen from bright, to dim, to almost dark & then compleely dark.
On the iMac, it dims the screen, but not to the same degree as the powerbooks. I'd like to make my screen darker than seems possible.
Is this a normal function of the iMacs?
    Thanks

The iMac screen is bright - especially in the normal room lighting conditons (as opposed to office lighting). For normal viewing gamma 2.2 and white point 6500 are best (native gamma and white point can also be used as they are close to these values) Gamma 1.8 looks pretty bad on these machines.
If that is still to bright you can make a dark profile in the Display pref pane's color calibration area with the expert settings (pull all the sliders down) - but that really will only increase the contrast - for the most part the whites will stay just as bright.

  • Intel 20"iMac screen seems too bright

I just bought a 2Ghz, 2GB Ram, 20" intel iMac. The screen seems to be washed out/too bright even after the brightness is adjusted. Is this a common problem? What is the remedy?

I have the same issue. I do a lot of digital photography and my prints should look close to what I see on the screen. My older eMac and MDD G4 w/ a 20" flat LCD screen gave me excellent results. I was struggling with the color profile on this new iMac (2.4 GHz Intel w/ 20" GLOSSY screen). I got close selecting the Adobe 1998 profile and adjusting the brightness down to about 60%. This helped but I'm not 100% satisfied. I called Apple and one of the tech support engineers suggested I also go into the Universal Access setting and adjust the contrast ever so slightly. Again, this is moving in the right direction and I need to view this setting for a while before I say it's what I'm after. It does help. Also, go to birdphotographers.net and select forum and go all the way to the bottom of the screen, they have a great step wedge to verify you monitor settings, you should see all steps w/o saturation.
    Good luck,
    Rich
