24'' iMac SuperDrive Problem

I have a problem with my iMac's SuperDrive. I have a DVD recorder for my TV, and I recorded a movie to a DVD-R. When I insert the DVD into the iMac, the drive spins for a long time, then mounts an empty CDR onto the desktop. I have no idea what's going on. Does the iMac not play DVD-Rs? Help would be greatly appreciated.

I am quessing that the problem is not with your iMac's Superdrive.
DVD is not as straight forward as one might think. There is a big difference in Recorders and Burners.
I am also quessing the DVD recorder for your TV is recording using a different Codec than that used for Mac.
Most software that comes with different components differ a lot.
Many of the software on the market today give the user options to burn for PC only as well as Mac only and PC or Mac compatible so there are 3 options.
Remember you also have settings. Go to your Apple, then choose System Preferences next choose CD/DVD and this will open a box that allows you to select what you want to happen when you insert a Blank CD or DVD as well as commercial Media.
I'll bet that if you insert this same DVD you burned in a PC it will play, this will tell you that PC only software is used by your DVD Recorder for your TV.
There is so much information to digest about DVD Format's, Software, Speed, Media, any and all of these can have effect on your ability to read and write.
If I may suggest do a Google seaarch and you can get a ton of information like these.

Differences in Media.

How to burn with Mac supplied Software.

So after looking at these you can see there can be more than one problem.

  • Imac Superdrive problem

Ok im a newbie so forgive me. I have a imac running osx version 10.75
Bought new in 2009 with dual  intel process.   The problem i am having is with the superdrive.
It will read most cd/dvd's but one of them it will just spit it back out. I originally thought it was a problem with the disc, but it reads just fine on other imacs and macbooks. As well as other windows machines. The disc itself is recorded in a .VOB format, inside a VIDEO_TS folder. I thought the problem was the file extension, so i downloaded VLC player and installed. Still no change. I insert the disc and after 5-10 seconds the disc ejects
    Can anybody help????

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • External Drive replacement for iMac "SuperDrive" ?

From reading this forum, it seems some iMac SuperDrives (mine included) have serious problems with reading and/or scratching discs. Apparently the only real solution is to use an external drive.
Can anyone recommend an external drive (USB or Firewire 800) that is compatible with the Mac CD and DVD disk-burning functions, iMovie and iDVD, will download software, play movie DVDs, and music CDs? In other words, it should do everything the SuperDrive is supposed to do. Also, it should last more than 6 months!
    Thanks!

only store they have is by chicago, which is also their office & where all of their tech support staff are located. they have hrs you can call in 7 days a week for help & are great about fixing or replacing anything that quits. haven't heard the same about lacie at all. the lacie drive are prettier tho, but seem more expenisve for what you actually get, imo.

  • IMAC SUPERDRIVE EJECTS Blank DVDs

My Imac Superdrive ejects all blank dvd but can read all movie dvd. Is there anyway to fix it ?

Hi i have the iMac mid 2007, and my superdrive have always been noicy. So i bought an external DVD bruner (samsung) works great, so the interna would not break down. Despite my prudence my internal superdrive are broken now. kjhfhf
    Can´t read, can´t write, can´t do nothing.
Several users has hade problems with these drivers, maybe Apple would extend warrent on thise lousy gizmo´s.
Or make the superdrive like a cassette, so just a push on the side of the iMac makes the superdrive "pop out". So you dont have to demolishe the whole computer just to replace it.
Somtime i wish i worked at Apple so i colud show how a knife-grinder sholud be pulled.

  • Solved superdrive problem

Some months back, I posted some discussion about iMac superdrives. Mine wouldn't burn properly (or so I thought) and then wouldn't read properly. As it transpired, upgrading the RAM from 256 to 768mb cured the playback. DVD's, where the playback appeared jilted (stop and start) now read okay. I can only assume there was not enough memory to buffer the content of the DVD to play.
On the Superdrive, eventually it wouldn't even read CD's. So my local tech <metek.com.au> fitted a new Pioneer 16x and downloaded <patchburn.de> and voila. It burns and reads DVD's like new.
One point, it will read at 16x but only burn at 1x. This is due to the hardware in the iMac. The Patchburn site has more details.
The Pioneer drive (DVD-RW DVR-110D) cost a shade over A$100.00 whereas the Apple replacement was a down payment for a house. So for anyone suffering from Superdrive problems, accept the fact they don't read forever and fit a new one.
Another thing Rik <macmate.com.au> said was the dust inside the machine builds up on one side of an iMac and is a poor environment for optical drives My computer is on everyday and from now-on-in I'II give it an annual clean. Hope this helps someone, James

That may help, I hope! Will go tomorrow to get different media. But the wierd thing is in a 50 spindle of memorex 16x dvd-r's i've gone through (burned) half the spindle!!! a week and a half ago! bought some "new" sony 1x-16x "ACCUCORE" discs and havent got one burned in either Toast 7 or 8! or using a burn folder or disk utility.
Toast will start to prepare the burn, then it gives me a message that it couldnt complete the burn.
The odd thing is in all occurances is the drive doesnt even start to spin-up! Took it to my local MacMall Thursday and they replaced the drive and was able to burn 1 data disk on 1 dvd+r media (a 500k file) on a disk that was already kinda beat up. No -r though. A new error message came up: Mac os error. They claim it's a software problem with osx!
I have 55 days of applecare left and intend to let them replace the drive again and reload fresh tiger.
I did an archive/reinstall of Tiger today and nothing, again! (so i'm currently at 10.4.6 - will hold off on the 10.4.9 updates for now)
Will head out and get media in the morning and see what's up, if nothing i'm off to MacMall!!!

  • IMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also play fine in Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

iMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also plays fine on Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
    Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
    etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

  • Does Apple Plan To Help Anybody w/ Their SuperDrive Problems

I see a lot of questions from people who spent good money for a superdrive and are unable to use it BUT NO ANSWERS. Does apple even read these forums? This is totally unacceptable. I want all the possible answers to all SuperDrive Problems NOW. Get on it, Apple. Stop making new ipods and start helping people with the broken junk that you gave them in exchange for hard cold cash.

First let's start by saying that we are all sorry you are having a problem with your SuperDrive.
That being said there are a couple of things that you must understand.
First we all have had one or more issues with the capability of the Superdrive in one sence or another,
You must also understand that the Software that comes with the Superdrive is ENTRY LEVEL. It is far from the top of the line in burning software.
The ease of use with the better software is daylight and dark in comparisson for most users.
The supplied software is cumbersome and difficult for some users to navigate through, not being used to it.
In comparison the better software gives you very informative choices of DATA, AUDIO, VIDEO, Likewise it gives you the choice of PC only, Mac only, or PC, and Mac compatible. Not all Media on the market is compatible with all burners and visa versa.
DVD can be confusing at best without doing some research.
Most users assume they can just put in media and click and wa-la they have a copy, Sorry to say this isn't the case.
There are very few step by step instructions on the use of Drive capabilitys and the use there of. I contend this is by design by the entire Industry. Read my response to this post.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=264696&tstart=0
Lastly, To my knowledge there are no Apple Butt Boys on these fourms, and none of us are here but for one purpose.
To help one another with our problems.
Rather then to go through the hassle of contacting Apple for every little problem we have that for the most part are self induced.
If you have a specific problem, all you have to do is give as much detail as you can to your problem and there are hundreds of very very sharp people on here that have forgot more than you or I could ever hope to know that are willing to take there time to help. Don

  • Cannot eject disc from iMAC superdrive

When I insert a CD or DVD into my iMAC superdrive it is recognised and will play but then it is not displayed in the finder sidebar. consequently I cannot eject the disc. The only way to eject is to restart the machine.

    1. Click on Finder or your Desktop and with Finder on the Menu Bar open Finder Preferences. Next click on the Sidebar tab in Finder Preferences and make sure that (CDs, DVDs and iPods) is checked.
    2. Also check the General tab if you would like these things to also show up on your Desktop.
Lastly you should also be able to Eject CDs & DVDs using the Eject button on the Menu Bar.

  • How can I make an ISO or IMG file from a cdrom on my IMAC Superdrive.

I would prefer IMG file but ISO would also work. Please help me make one or both of these using my IMAC superdrive from a cdrom.
    Thanks
    Leon

With the disc in the drive, open Disk Utility in /Applications/Utilites. Select the CD in the list on the left. Then click the New Image button. This will create a .dmg file, which replaces the old .img file type.
Alternatively, there is some software which will do this in a drag and drop fashion: http://c-command.com/dropdmg/

  • Imac display problem, the resolution seems to be unusual, top bar and all folders on the desktop background is off the screen

Need help with 21" imac display problem. The resolution seems to be unsual, everything on the desktop background goes off the screen. The resolution is set at 1920 x 1080

Quit the game and restart the iPad.
To quit the game - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Get a lens cleaner disc. One with brushes and try that. CDs and DVDs use different lenses, so since CDs load and play, I strongly suspect a dirty lens.

  • Superdrive problems with new imac

Hey anyone who can help I have started having problems using the superdrive on my imac. first noticed this when trying to make a disk image in Disk utility of projects I had previously made in imovie/iDVD. As the image starts to load process the superdrive slowly starts to slow down. I am safter that the disk does not necessarily want to eject. Any ideas- software or hardware issue?
    ADAM

could this possibly be caused by DVD labels on the disk, it seems that before the Drive stops the sound gets louder.

  • Intel iMac SuperDrive (Matshita DVD-R UJ-846) DVD Burning Problems

    Hi there:
Having a strange problem burning DVD's now. I have a January '06 intel iMac Core Duo 2ghz, 2GB RAM. My DVD burner suddenly no longer will burn DVD's. When I put in a blank DVD-R, it just spins for a bit then spits it out, no prompt or error message. When I put in a blank DVD+R or DVD-RW, it gives me the usual prompt that a blank DVD has been inserted and asks how to handle it. But when I try to burn, it opens the session, then quickly finishes the session (without any burning) and spits the disc out with an error that burning failed because of an inability to calibrate laser power level for the media. Sometimes it says due to a media error. It also will not read a previously burned DVD data disc, including the OS install DVD that came with the computer. It will however, read and play movie DVD's, and also reads and burns CD-R's with no issues.
I've tried the following fixes with the following results:
    1) Change media. Have tried several different types and different brands. No success.
    2) Burn DVD's from an external firewire DVD burner. Works fine.
    3) Hardware Test via the install DVD (on the external firewire burner). No problems found.
    4) Did a fresh install of the Tiger OS onto an external firewire hard drive, booted from that, and tried to burn. No success.
    5) Tried burning from Disk Utility and Finder. No success.
    6) Put a cleaning CD into the drive and let it run. Still no success after.
System profiler says the drive is ready to burn CDs and DVDs. CDs work, DVDs don't.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this and how to fix?
    Thanks!

If you guys did a search on the optical drives you'll discover that they have a rather extensive
history for failure. the failing optical drive process starts off rather slowly and worsens over time.
You could replace the internal optical drive but rather than performing surgery on your Imac
you would be better off going with an external optical drive.
If your IMac is still under warranty you can have it replace but I would still pick up an external
as well, I have read a couple of threads where even after having the internal replace the same issue
    happened yet again.
I ordered a LaCie that does rather well.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001P5C9S0/ref=oss_product
I did however discover a couple of minor issues with my LaCie...
    1) When the mounts a disc , for some reason the mechanical ejection button
on the face of the enclosure is disabled. This is not a major issue right click and eject or, drag the
    icon into the trash
    2) if you are wanting to lightscribe be sure to go to the LaCie website and download the latest
lightscribe app, the one that came with mine was out of date and did not work in Mac OSX 10.6
    3) My lightscribed DVD's had a problem , the images where filled with rings from the center of the
disc out, I have discovered this is due to calibration , Amazon has shipped me a new Lacie that
I have sitting in a box next to me, I have not had a chance to test out the new unit yet.
You may also look at OWC's optical drives
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
Either way make sure that you go with an optical drive with Firewire.
