24" iMac USB issue

Recently my 4-yr-old 24" iMac has been having USB issues. The only peripherals it will see are the mouse and keyboard (and a printer if it is plugged into the keyboard). Nothing else plugged into the USB ports is recognized - no iPhone, no printer, no hub, nothing. The built-in iSight camera and Bluetooth have also disappeared, and I know they are USB related as well. Genius bar says $450 for new logicboard. I can't find my AHT disk
The USB ports all seem to work with the mouse and keyboard. Any other suggestions? (I have reset PMU.)

Try resetting the SMC, if it doesn't work the first time do it 2-3x. Also try doing a PRAM reset.
_SMC RESET_
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
_PRAM RESET_
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
• Release the keys.

  • Strange Imac USB issue you won't believe

    Hi,
Hope someone can help me, this is nuts.
I have Intel based Imac running 10.4.11. I have had it for 5 years with no issues until a month ago.
Long story but lots of troubleshooting and attempted to install new hardware, printer, external Hard drive etc.
    Bottom line.
The USB ports on the monitor will only run my Keyboard and the mouse. Nothing else. Shocker is that anything I plug into the keyboard works but if I plug them into the USB port directly, nothing works. How can that be? Same port on the computer but I have to go through the keyboard.
I now have a Powered 7 port usb Hub hooked up to the keyboard and all is good.
Any ideas on how this can be happening and what are the long term risks. Is my computer going to die anytime soon. Stressing the port on the keyboard, etc.
Oh and one more weird thing that just started happening. The monitor will occasionally go from screen saver to back on rather than to sleep...... and one in 5 times I shut it down it hangs up. I need to unplug it and all is fine for a few shutdowns then it happens again.
    Thanks for any help.
    Beat Regards,
    Wally

Sorry that the SMC reset didn't get the ports working correctly.
    Also have a look at > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
    and from that article try:
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
+2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).+
+3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.+
+4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.+
+5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.+
In step 3 wait at least minutes 5 or longer.
Does the keyboard work in another port? If so, move the keyboard to another port and try the hub or other device in that port?

  • Lion = lackluster, USB issues

I'm very disappointed in Lion. With the exception of a few new features, it's useless and I'm shocked that Apple would publish a product like this. I've wasted $30. I never thought I would say anything like that about an Apple product. Up until now, I've never had any issues with any of the OS's.
Ever since I installed Lion, I've had USB issues. I plug something in and it doesn't work. Specifically, my iPhone, my flash drive and my USB 2.0 card reader. This is all equipment that worked flawlessly prior to the installation.
I've tried all the remedies: restart, plug and unplug the devices, tested the hub, plug and unplug from the iMac itself. Any suggestions?

I haven't heard that reported as a bug in Lion.
Have you tried an SMC reset?
    Reset PRAM first.

  • Driver update for Win 7 USB issue on nVidia chipset systems now available

This patch is needed for the TouchSmart 600 AIO Desktop series if you haven't installed it.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/Driver-update-for-Win7-USB-issue-on-nVidia-chipse...

The update is not part of the desktop Win7 update disc from MS or HP  - Microsoft has not yet integrated it into Win7, and it is not yet available on Windows Update (it is likely to hit there sometime in January).   It was available too late to get it out on HP Update before the holiday break.  I don't believe there have been any rolls to the Win7 upgrade disks.   I do recommend (while still on Vista) running HP Update and installing all applicable updates  - PRIOR to doing the Win7 upgrade.  Also - I'd double check the drivers page for your system for any Vista updates as well,  best to do any driver/BIOS/Video BIOS updates prior to the Win7 upgrade process.  I know that some of them were created before Windows 7 was out - and may not want to install if it sees the newer OS.
As to the fix - this could manifest itself in many ways - but essentially - this resolves system flakyness with USB devices attached .  Some internal devices (card readers, touchscreens, some Wireless LAN interfaces) connect via USB - so they could be affected, even if you haven't hooked up anything to your system externally.
Not sure just what problems you were experiencing, so can't say this was the cause (and will be the fix) - but if it applies to your system - I'd definitely give it a shot.    I checked a couple of systems that had this update - I see it now on the software drivers and update page for them, so it looks like it rolled out OK.
    Happy Holidays...

  • Usb issues on a215

i downloaded the BIOS update to fix the screen going black issue, but now i'm having horrible USB issues.
    1. a drive i've used for 3 years can't be recognized by the laptop, no matter what port i put it into.
    2. i keep getting that "connection tone" noise as if things are being plugged and unplugged, but i'm not doing anything.
is there an update for this problem? i must admit i've had usb issues w/this laptop forever.

    Hi,
So, I suggest you if you have something attached to your USB Ports, then remove it and try to boot your machine up. Remove EVERY
    This should help you out.
If you got no success, then try following:
    1. Remove your battery and remove AC.
    2. Remove EVERTHING attached to your USB ports
    3. Put the battery in the machine back and connect AC
    4. Try to boot, it would be better to boot in safe mode (accessible through pressing F8 before windows is booting up)
In case of no success, give some feedback, maybe I or other users can give you then more hints.

  • Macbook Pro USB issue

    Hi All;
I saw lots of discussions about USB problem of Macbook Pro, and i tried maybe all suggestions,  i couldnt solve USB issue
I bought my Macbook Pro 13 inc, 500 GB, i5, OS X Lion, 2 days ago and this is my first Mac ...
I cant see my external disk (Philips), Samsung Galaxy S by using USB ports (i tried both USB enterances, but not working).
I checked my Hardware by Apple Hardware Test (extended test done) and it says 'No trouble found'
I checked Utilities and USB devices are not written in the list, only 500 GB SATA disk shown.
I uploaded MacFuse-Tuxera and ntfs-3g-2010 softwares for using USB devices but i cant solve the problem too...
My USB devices are not shown in desktop and utilities lists
How can i solve this problem, my devices work in Windows 7 - PC as usual, but in Macbook Pro, they dont work, please support me. I dont think that it can be hardware problem, Mac is new and devices are ok. Operating systems are different only.
    Thanks, Regards.

I solved the problem about Samsung Galaxy S, now i can connect it by changing settings of GALAXY S.
    Settings>Applications>Development
Than i plug phone to MAC and now i can see my phone on desktop
I checked my PHILIPS external disk, unfortunatelly it is produced for only Windows operating systems, so i cant use it anymore
My MAC has no USB problem, i can use my 3G USB device too, only Philips external disk failed.
    Thanks for your support...

  • Mac Pro USB issue

I have a weird situation. I have a Mac Pro 8 core 3.0Ghz with 13GB RAM, 4 SATA internal drives, 2 USB external 500 Western Digital Drives. I use bay one of the sata for OSX Tiger and Bay 2 for OSX Leopard (both purchased versions). The problem is when I'm in Tiger the USB drives have a through put of about 3MB and when booted in Leopard they have a through put of about 24MB. I can only guess that it's a driver problem, but I haven't been able to find anything about the fix. I did find that the WD USB Drives have a problem with speed. These WD drives are USB and SATA. When using them as SATA drives they work fine on both versions of OSX. The problem is I need the SATA connections for other drives and just want to use the WD drives as backup. Has anyone got any ideas why the drives perform normally under Leopard and not under Tiger?

    Hi southwos,
That certainly is a strange one...
I have heard of several USB issues pertaining to tiger updates, noteably, 10.4.11. It would seem some USB drivers were updated to fix several bugs, but inadvertantly, caused others. The solution it seems, is to rollback to 10.4.9.
The symptoms of this 'unexpected feature' (sic) are that some USB devices seem to operate at USB1.1 speeds.
This only affects a small number of devices, and its the chipsets in said devices that have the conflict.
Certainly hope i have been of help
    Cheers
    Bryza

  • Which iMac usb port is high power?

Which iMac USB port is high power?

I'm not sure this is the case, at least on the newer iMacs. Some ports will adequately power some devices (most notable the USB Suerdrive) while others won't. Or, this has been the case recently, anyway; USB with Apple devices seems hopelessly arcane anyway, which makes no sense at all!)

  • IMac Freezing Issue -Need Confirmation...

    Hey all,
I need confirmation on whether or not zapping the PRAM seems to stop the iMac freezing issue. I have had 3 freezes within 10 minutes. I restarted after my last preparation to installing Leopard and the screen saver kicked in, which is the 'Cosmos' slide show and the graphics froze up. Screen went black and I left it for a couple of minutes. I came back to it, and had an image on the screen, but it was still locked up. So I restarted it. After boot up, I opened Activity monitor, and locked up again.
So I zapped the PRAM on this 3rd restart and have not locked up since. I'd bet 100 to 1 that if I were to restart, without the PRAM reset, I would crash within 5 minutes of the start up.
I really believe without a doubt these iMac reboot issues are related to specific EFI versions failing to initialize graphics correctly.
Can anyone confirm this? If your iMac crashes, does Zapping the PRAM fix it?
I'll be calling Executive relations contact and telling her the bad news.
Okay, so first off, this isn't a solution to this iMac plague, but it should prevent the freezing and NO, it does not have to do with removing the ATI drivers.
I was asked to install Leopard by Executive relations at Apple and told her that, as soon as I do, my iMac will freeze. So, I have been preparing the Leopard install and have crashed 3 times, in a row... at that point I said, Leopard is going to be a no go but I needed to use my iMac without it crashing. So, zapped the PRAM like I did before and immediately the graphic freezes went away.
    So

Here is my experience, iMac 24:
I bought in JR NY 2 weeks ago. I had to use it without internet connection (so no updates) and no freezes.
Then I connected to internet and installed the available updates and start to get the freezes, even trying the PRAM reset.
I tried to remove the extra memory, change memory slot but no lucky, video artifacts (like pixels not refreshing) when moving the mouse over the dock icons then freeze.
I had no other softwares installed at all, only the OS applications.
I formatted the HD and reinstalled the Tiger and didn't accepted any update, so I could use the imac for 2 days without a single freeze, but some black screens when screen saver starts.
Since no freezes, I decided to update the OS again and after the first boot the freezes came back very fast, I could start a freeze in about 10 seconds.
I tried the PRAM reset without sucess and my machine was ready to go to a tech person.
Yesterday I updated the OS to 10.4.11 and did a PRAM reset after the update and tested the machine for 2 hours without a freeze or video artifacts, looks very stable, but I have to test it more.
You guys tried the Tiger last update ?

  • P45 Platinum USB issues on XP 64 Pro

My mouse (Logitech MX518) works only when plugged into one of the USB ports on my motherbeoad.  Any other port and it tries to detect new software - runs through the installation and I get a fatal error message - and the mouse does not work at all.  I can't get the Logitech Setpoint software to install either - when installing the drivers I get an error message.  I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with Logitech and they think it's a USB / Intel control issue.  I had a SM Bus controller error in device manager and I used the "INF Update Utility - Primarily for Intel® 4, 3, 900 Series Chipsets (2455KB)" which solved the SM Bus controller issue.  but I'm not sure that was the correct piece of software to use as the motherbeoad says its a P45 chipset.  The USB issue has existed since I powered up the machine yesterday - the Intel software installation did not impact the problem either way.  the MSI CD is useless as it doesn't seem to have any 64 bit drivers.  I've downloaded all from MSI that I can find and got the audio and LAN working but I still get the occasional blue screen for really no reason, just surfing the web and bam - blue screen.  am I missing something ciritcal for the installation?  any thoughts are appreciated on the best way to set up this 64 bit system.

I'll look up the BIOS in a second
    BIOS is                              A7512IMS V1.0 052108
I also made the change so it won't restart automatically if I get a blue screen.  And BIOS has USB Enabled. (I'm catching up!)
Alright, now I'm trying to make a bootable CD to update my BIOS.
Update: Got the USB drive BIOS to function per the MSI Forum Flash Tool, but I get an error message - Error File ROM ID incorrect - and the BIOS doesn't update.  Still listed as V1.0 and should be V1.7.  My P45 isn't listed as supported for Sure Hands, so I haven't tried that.  Don't know if that ROM error is the reason my BIOS isn't updating or not.  I cleared the CMOS, etc.  Not sure why it isn't working.
You have pickup the wrong BIOS file. Latest BIOS for your board is 1.5 ==> http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1479
    1.7 doesn't exist.

Under the keyboard, hey? So you have a Titanium Powerbook. You should update your profile to include the model and CPU size of your Powerbook to help get more accurate assistance. Crucial is a reputable brand of RAM. They also offer a lifetime warranty.
The clips: I used to have a Titanium Powerbook, but it was a few years ago. If MY memory serves me right the clips move to the outside of the RAM modules. Due to the heat and never being removed they may have semi-welded themselves into position. One trick would be to heat the computer up and try to remove them while it is warm/hot. Just plug it in and run some CPU intensive apps for a while, then turn it off, remove the battery, ground the computer and give them another try. Grounding (earthing) the computer to remove static is not difficult. After you have removed the battery just touch the metal case and grab a metal window or door frame. That will ground any static in the machine. Also, if you are working on carpet take your shoes and socks off to avoid more static build up. You could even go as far to stand on a rubber bathroom mat while working on the computer, but replacing RAM should only take a few minutes. If you still have difficulties getting the RAM stick out go to a site called The Powerbook Medic and look for tips on removing sticks from a Titanium.
Hope the new RAM stops the panics.

  • IMac display issues: black icons and folders, doubled up files in finder windows, programs won't update

    HELP!
I'm hoping someone can help with my iMac 27" purchased in 2010.  From a previous discussion I started a year ago, I have had virtually nothing but trouble with it.  After the internal hard drive crashing, I was able to install OS X on an external drive and used it for a good 8 months to drive my iMac and I took it to an expert who has replaced it with a 3tb HDD, but at some point the display has gone crazy.  I am not certain if it is hardware, i.e. graphics card or video but I'll describe the symptoms and add some pics to see if anyone has seen this before and knows what the problem may be.
    1.     90% of the screen was covered with white with just a portion of the desktop showing through.
(This happened when I tried to reinstall OS X on the old HDD and the new one, but didn't happen when using OS X install disc)
    2.     Files, folders, photos and some icons on the dock go black
    3.     Files and photos double up when in Finder.  When I'm viewing photos, it shows them but all the previous panes and the photos are jumbled behind the
            photos.
    4.     Anything I open in Preview is completely black, but ColourSync Utility opens everything fine.
    5.     Programs won't update.  They will download onto my iMac but won't update.  Some say, because I don't have OS X 10.6.8 others just won't open.
Including Google Chrome, opens with two tabs open but when I open a third tab the rainbow wheel just turns.  Skype won't open just gives a failure
            report.
    6.     10.6.8 Update Combo downloads but when I restart the screen is covered in white - as in 1. and I have to reinstall OS X 10.6.2 to get the screen to               clear but then all the above problems continue.
    7.     Sometimes videos don't display in Youtube, or the entire page other than the video player is covered in rainbow lines.
    8.     Some buttons are blacked out on selection pages, i.e. system preferences, or saving screens
    9.     Photos opened in FB go upside down and flicker all over the page as my mouse runs over them.
    10.   Photos won't upload into internet editing programs.
I can't find anyone who has had the same issue in all of the discussions I've looked at, but it sounds like I have a video problem, but I wondered if it might be a software problem with flash or something.  Or I have something malicious on my computer.
I also have an iphone 5 that faulted with the iTunes and USB icons and won't fix after trying one of those R-Sims, and I wondered if somewhere along the line it may have even had a virus/trojan/malware that has infected my external drive and then my internal drive.  A reason I have thought that is because I have used my daughter's MacPro laptop and plugged in my external drive and I noticed the windows in hers were starting to do the same thing.
And on top of all that, my fans didn't work for over a year and I had to place an external fan at the back of the computer or it would overheat and shut down, but after resetting the SMU it started working again, but it is very noisy. I have tried to download SMC Fan Control and although it downloads to the HDD, it won't open.
Sorry its such a long post, I do hope with all of this information someone can help me.
    Thanks so much.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and *Sophos Enterprise AV*. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly*
Macs get grumpy when running anti virus software. Disable or completely uninstall Sophos A/V and see if that makes a difference. A/V software on a Mac will slow the drive down more and more as time goes on.
Also, check the vendor sites for each 3rd party software you installed to make sure they are compatible with 10.6.x
The "hard reboots" are a result of the system freezing due to incompatible or outdated software.

  • I am quite fed up with Apple and my iMac - multiple issues

I've been a Windows user for years. I've suffered through all of the ups and downs of Windows over the years, mostly the downs. I have three Windows 7 computers, and quite frankly, both have performed quite beautifully, albeit without the polish of the Mac.
Earlier this year, I decided to buy an iMac for a few reasons. First, they are just so beautiful, and even if you are going to run Windows they are probably the best Windows computers out there. Second, I wanted to do more video editing and found the Windows tools weren't very good. I also wanted to run some karaoke software (kJams) that at the time was not available for Windows.
I was basically pleased with the iMac for a few months. However, there was one problem I could never solve: the wifi connection got lost periodically, even though I had made all of the system updates. I know this is a problem with the iMac, because my numerous Windows PCs and my two iPod toouches had no problem with a wifi connection. It appears from various posts here that this is indeed a problem many others have experienced since Snow Leopard's release, and as far as I can tell, despite many updates to the Airport software it has never been fixed by Apple. Strike 1.
A couple of weeks ago, my iMac started running slow for no reason I could identify. I don't have a lot of software installed on it, I didn't download anything pirated or questionable. I did install bootcamp according to Apple's instructions, and it worked fine (I wanted to run some Windows games). I tried doing all of the things that folks suggest when your computer is running slow - repairing permissions, running Onyx, etc. None of them seemed to do anything. I tried creating a new user, it had the same problem. I also noticed various other problems with the computer: it was slow to recognize a USB hard drive (and sometimes didn't recognize it at all), external hard drives would not appear in the time machine set up, and various other problems I can't quite recall. Overall, while presumably nothing serious should have been wrong with my computer, I decided I probably should simply reinstall OS X. Strike 2.
Now, quite frankly I would have been happy to simply reset the computer to its factory state. I would point out that nearly all Windows PCs come with a separate repair partition where it is very easy to do that with one click. I guess Apple is so confident in the reliability of its computers it doesn't think this is a useful feature. So, I had to install OS X using the DVD that came with the computer. It took quite a while to do this, and actually it wasn't at all clear to me that my settings would be kept (one would think that this is something the install screen would point out - Windows makes a quite clear distinction between a "clean install" and a re-install).
I was somewhat pleased when all of my settings were there. After the long process of reinstalling, I click on the "Accounts" setting I get a message saying that the Preferences application has quit unexpectedly -- clearly there are still problems. Quite irritating given that I just spent an hour trying to re-install the OS. I google around and again find others have had this problem, but unfortunately none of the proposed fixes I try seem to work. And my computer still seems to have other problems - it still doesn't recognize external drives very well. I will say that it seemed to be running a little faster though. Strike 3.
Anyway, I decide I need to do a full clean install. When I do that, things seem to be working better, although the mouse pointer is quite jerky - I'm thinking that maybe I need to just run software update to fix that. I start the software update - a nice 1gb download is required. Now ,the problem is that I STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM WITH WIFI DISCONNECTIONS. So no matter how many times I start the download, I CAN"T FINISH IT. And Apple, in its infinite wisdom, HAS NOT WRITTEN A DOWNLOADER THAT IS SMART ENOUGH TO CONTINUE WHERE IT LEFT OFF. How hard is this to do, really? Do I now have to lug my iMac across the house to put it on a wired connection? I've already wasted hours trying to get this piece of junk working.
And the sad fact is, once I am done, I will have a very beautiful computer that can't hold an internet connection.
I have to give Apple kudos for the iMac hardware. It's great. But the software? It's fine as long as it works. But it doesn't always work - and when it doesn't, it actually at this point seems more buggy and difficult to repair than Windows. Is this the last Mac I'll ever buy? Probably. Quite frankly, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that Apple's best developers have moved on to more exciting pastures (iPhone for example). And given the number of unsolved issues posted on these forums (including the ones I mention here), it appears that Apple engineers are simply asleep at the switch.

Let me start by saying I don't use wireless so I haven't had to deal with it, and I assume you know your way around all the settings in your modem/switch and Windows 7.

    Changing from WEP to WPA
How do I change from WEP to WPA security, which I have been told is better. I'm sure it is simple but i cant find it.
These settings are in your wireless router, so you will have to consult the manual for how to access the administration page and change the wireless security settings. Once you have WPA or WPA2 enabled, you will need to reauthenticate your computer with the wireless network since you will have a new password. If you have problems with persistent password requests popping up, you will need to open the "Keychain Access" utility and remove all keychain entries associated with your wireless network and password.

Networking In networking utilities, the in-depth network troubleshooting and monitoring utility VisualRoute ($49.95) has been updated to fix a bug with the "whois" routine, and likewise the Wi-Fi hot spot finder AirRadar ($19.95) has also been updated with a small bug fix for the signal status not updating.
The network administration and security testing utility NetScan (free) has also been updated and now has a revamped interface and new features for port scanning as well as fixes for icon appearance and update-checking problems.

As for restore, it is different, won't be the same, but there are two ways to handle that on a Mac:
    Apple TimeMachine
Clone OS X: bootable (yes, you can boot from 2nd or 3rd hard drive) - SuperDuper ($29) is superb and I update the backup (15 minutes) before applying updates.
That way I have my previous system with all data, not just an image, all my data and going back in time.
    From another thread:
if you have issues when using an AirPort router, you've either got interference issues causing your problems or a system issue.
    whenever possible:
    1) Vist an Apple Store
    2) Try your machine on their network
    3) If the connection drops, make them fix it.
Reason being, I've tried and checked log after log and have never seen a connection drop inside an Apple Store.
My gut reaction would be interference but the easiest move may be to check it in an Apple Store if at all possible.

If you connect to the Internet or a network in several different ways (using AirPort or Ethernet, for example), you can change the order of the network port configurations your computer tries when connecting to the Internet or a network.
To change the priority of a network port configuration:
    1) Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.
    2) Choose Set Service Order from the Actions pop-up menu.
    3) Drag a service, such as Ethernet, to the top of the list. When you try to connect, Mac OS X will try the port configuration at the top of the list.©
Tip: Any Network Device listed here that you'll never use for a Network Connection should be set to 'Inactive'.

  • Re-2013 27'' iMac USB 3.0 troubles-.

      Hi guys
      the 19th of October i got my brand new 27'' iMac  i5 3,2GHZ, 24GB Ram, G-Force GT 755M, 1TB..
got it home, powered it, updated it's software but NO Mavericks yet - being a work machine, i always wait a while to update OS until i'm sure... so  it's running 10.8.5.
then i transfered all my data from a Time Machine back-up, all went well...
after reading Apple's own recommendations, i started by plugging one of my NewerTech Guardian Maximus Raid1 enclosures via supplied USB 3.0 cable - this, if i understood correctly, ''sets'' the iMac's USB ports to USB 3.0...
then i connected a second G-Max also via USB 3.0, both enclosures mounted fast enough ! wanting to make sure all was OK, i launched iTunes ( my music is stored in 1 of these boxes..) & then......my 1st Beach Ball & system freeze happened
tried all sorts, always the same system or app freezes, beach balls & subsequent Force Quits - which by the way DON'T seem to always work specially if they are of the ''Finder not responding'' + relaunch Finder variety
tried unplugging everything, start from scratch - same thing happened. again i unplugged everything only this time i plugged in my Logitech powered USB 2 hubs first THEN the G-Max's to the hub + everything else & it worked fine
not wanting to deal w/ USB 2 speeds, i bought an Apple Tbolt/FW800 adapter & it all works now - problem is, one of the reasons i sold my late 2009 27'' iMac & bought this machine was to benefit from it's USB 3.0 capabilities.....
trusting these USB 3.0 tantrums AREN'T caused by my new iMac, i contacted OWC to check if there was a new firmware for my G-Max's, they sent me a link to the latest, a friend equipped w/ the required Windows laptop to install said firmware update ( in this day & age !?.. ) came over, ran the update but a dialog box opened stating both my G-Max's have the exact same firmware version as the update itself....
having Googled these USB 3.0/Mac issues, among other things i came across some stating Bluetooth MIGHT or HAS something to do w/ it so....got a corded Logitech mouse i keep for emergencies, switched off Bluetooth &....same thing ! :-b
following an Apple Support Comunities user's advice here, i tried also resetting the Pram, the SMC, etc....but nothing changed
meanwhile having ordered a 3rd G-Max enclosure, i connected it & miracle of miracles - it works without a single occurrence !? not only that but in the system report itn displays differently :
1 of the old G-Max connected
    both of the old G-Max
the new G-Max & it's Blackmagic Disk Speed Test results
by the way, do these figures seem about right ? i also copied a folder of 49GB of video files to it & it took 11 minutes to do so...
the enclosure is loaded w/ a pair og Western Digital Green Caviars ( i didn't know they could cause problems in Raid arrays when i bought them but have NEVER caused any really..)
please note that on the System Report screenshots above, only the new G-Max enclosure is correctly identified, could this have anything to do with it ?
as i said elsewhere, i'm not terribly worried about these ''USB 3.0 tantrums'', my feel being it must be nothing more than a few ''teething troubles'' between different USB 3.0 implementations which i hope will go away as new drivers/software updates come along, etc.....still, the fact is i would REALLY like to be able to use my iMac's USB 3.0 ports & benefit from them
      so in a nutshell :
1 - old G-Max's to iMac via USB 3.0 cable = system/Finder/app freezes & beach balls + can't run Balckmagic Disk Speed Test
    2 - G-Max's to iMac via Tbolt/FW800 adapter = all good
3 - G-Max's to iMac via powered USB 2 hub = all good
    4 - new G-Max to iMac via USB 3.0 = all good
any help, info, links, suggestions, etc....would be MOST WELCOME & appreciated
a great week-end to all & many thanks
      Nuno

after a series of emails to OWC Support, OWC confirmed the ''old'' G-Max enclosures ( January & May 2012..) have a different chipset than the new one so i can only conclude either the USB 3.0 standard changed in the meantime or they found out the old one were causing too many problems ?
what OWC suggested is that i return my old enclosures to them & for $40 each, they would update the firmware which if i lived in the States i would consider BUT :
1 - i live in Europe so posting them to & from OWC would be prohibetively expensive ( enough to buy the newer version or almost ?.. )
2 - since OWC sent me a link of their latest firmware available but that turned out to be the exact same fimware version the older enclosures have installed AND running/installing it DIDN'T solve the issues, it strikes me more as a bet rather than a sure thing !?
3 - who's to say this won't be necessary again say in another year ? hardly practical & rather expensive
in the meantime i've contacted Macupgrade.eu whom i bought them from ( an Euro vendor of all things OWC..) to see if this can be done through them, specially considering they offer a 3 year warranty for the G-Max enclosures..
if not, i might as well forget about it & forget about OWC products in the future if indeed the only way to solve bigger issues is to spend more money than the items are worth posting them across the planet
this of course leaves me a rather strange after taste considering that some of the reasons to buy these enclosures were OWC good rep to begin with + the fact they were advertised as being USB 3 - the fact they changed the chipset in them & that the new one does work properly w/ my 2013 iMac to me is proof there was something not quite right to begin with specially considering that Apple, although not infallible, usually gets these things right from the word go..
oh well, in the meantime i'll keep on ''wasting'' one Thunderbolt port to run them via FW800, something i can't help find comical
