24" iMac - use as a monitor for my PC?
I have a 24" iMac and want to know if I can utilize the monitor for my PC?
Dan
Well sort of, you can get Remote Desktop for your PC, then control use it from the Mac.
Or make it easy on yourself...

Can i use my 21.5" imac as an external monitor for my macbook pro?
I have a 21.5" iMac (with Intel processor) that I'm trying to use an external monitor for a new Macbook Pro. Both machines have a thunderbolt input. I bought a Belkin mini displayport to mini displayport connector, but my macbook is not displaying on the iMac. I saw videos online showing this done with the 27" iMac, saying you just needed to press Command+F2, but that is not working for me. I can't seem to find any posts confiming if I can use my 21.5" iMac this way though.

Can I use my 24 inch' 2007 imac as an external monitor for my PC
can I use my 24 inch' 2007 imac as an external monitor for my PC
No, sorry, you can't. Pre-Thunderbolt iMacs could to this, but with Thunderbolt-equpped iMacs they can only be used as a screen for other Thunderbolt-equipped computers. No company has yet to come up with a converter that works with Thunderbolt Macs. The only way you could get video from a game console into your Mac would be via a video capture device and the inherent lag in such capture would, I think, make most if not all games unplayable.

Using 27'' iMac (2012) as extended monitor for MacBook Air (2012)?
Hi all, I'm trying to find a solution how to use my iMac as the extended monitor for my MacBook Air. I saw the video on YouTube >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bVOssjlsGY << but I am not sure if it is real or fake. I have checked the forums here and other sources, but I haven’t seen any official statement about the possibility to use thunderbolt cable for this purpose. Do you have any experiences with that? Or can you advice please?
Yes, you can use the 27" as a monitor with Target display mode. Just attach the two with a Thunderbolt cable and press Command F2 on the iMac. It will become a secondary monitor for the MBair.

Firewire 800 iMac as the TDM monitor for my MBA thunderbolt?
Can I use my Firewire 800 iMac as the TDM monitor for my MBA thunderbolt? Will the thunderbolt to firewire adaptor allow this to work?
If the iMac is a 21-inch model, it's not available that way but is with a product such as ScreenRecycler.
If the iMac is a 27-inch model, use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable.

IMac as an extended monitor for a windows based laptop
Can I use my iMac as an extended monitor for a windows based Laptop while also still using the iMac as an iMac?
Hi tpskoog,
Certain iMacs support a mode known as Target Display Mode which allows them to function as an external display, but at the moment only other Macs with certain video out ports are supported as the primary (source) machine. You may find the following article helpful:

I've got a MacBook Pro 15' running 10.6.6. I want to use an external monitor for my graphic design work using Adobe software and thought I'd try an HD TV. I ran a Mini Display to HDMI lead to the TV but the picture quality was disappointing. I also tried a Mini Display to VGA lead and that wasn't much better. I tried all variations of resolutions in System prefs - Displays but nothing helped. Am I getting something wrong? Thanks all.
In addition to pixel density, you are up against the translation driver card in the TV.
If you read the fine print of computer-resolution-capability in the TV user guide, you will see a chart as tall as the manual page. At the top is the smallest resolution capable, at the bottom is the full use of the 1080p in the TV.
Mac falls into the top 25% of the page, maxing out at 1366x768 often. This is because the TV control card is expected to do too much of the work, but is not designed for computer-monitor processing.
I looked at the resolution charts on 2 TVs before deciding to buy a 1080p LCD monitor that has a TV interface/connector. Computer monitor first, TV second. But the thing is only 27 in. Good thing TV is not as important to me as it is to others. -

Utter nonsense.

Just use the defaults. Windows 7 is very slow and really RAM-hungry. You will need 8 GB of RAM on your Mac because Windows 7 needs 2 GB all by itself. Even with that, it runs twice as slow as Windows XP.
If you've already spent money, there isn't much you can do at this point. I suggest using Apple Pages and, when you are ready to submit something to your professor, export it as a Word document and then re-save that Word document as a Word XML doc. I don't know why Pages doesn't export in docx format. It is built into the operating system. I even have a little utility that will save your clipboard directly to docx. You can download a fully-functional demo from: http://www.etresoft.com/pastefiler
There are many other utilities that can do the same, including Office 2011 itself. I prefer Pages because it supports modern OS X technologies and is much faster and easier to use than Word, but Pages only exports to DOC, not DOCX. Word is better if you are doing really sophisticated document, but it costs a fair amount money.

How to use an iMac as a second monitor for an iMac
I have two 21.5 inch iMac's (late 2009) and I want to use one as a second monitor for the other. I have a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort connector but when I connect it to both computers, nothing happens. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong once they're plugged in or if I have the wrong cable all together. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
Not going to work, the ONLY 2009 / 2010 iMacs that supported Target Display Mode were the 27" models, 21.5" models simply will not work. Please read Apple FAQ on TDM and you will see I am correct.
Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
While Neil is correct, Screen Recycler's performance is not that good so the user experience probably will not be worth it. -
Can an iMac be used as a monitor for a Mac Pro?
Hi all,
I'm getting nowhere looking in the search, so I'm hoping someone can clear something up for me:
is it possible to use an iMac as a display for a Mac Pro?
I am beginning to think I'd better get a Mac Pro, but I already have an iMac, for which I've been researching getting external storage so I can do Final Cut Studio editing and back up of it all... as someone suggested, might be better in the long run to just get it all in the Mac Pro, and have the option and simplicity to upgrade as and when... but then there's the need for a display for the Mac Pro, which does whack the price up... but if I could use this iMac, what a beautiful monitor...
I thought someone said that Final Cut would not allow another computer to be attached though... is that the case, anyone know?
Thanks for any knowledge and help, much appreciated... I'm learning to not rush into anything, as you learn more the whole picture seems to change!
Cheers, SydThe current 27-inch iMac can. Other iMac models can't outside of a VNC setup or ScreenRecycler; all such solutions require a standalone monitor for setup and troubleshooting.

To use imac 27 late2009 as monitor for macbook pro 13 rethina with thunderbolt cable
when i us a thunderbolt cable from mac book pro rethina to my imac 27 late 2009 nothing happen, even with command F2 i can not use the imac as monitor for the mcbook pro
You have got a problem: your iMac does not detect Thunderbolt cables because it has got Mini DisplayPort instead. However, you can use your iMac as a display for your MacBook Pro.
To do this, you need to get a Mini DisplayPort cable like this one and connect it to your iMac and the MacBook Pro. Then, press Command and F2 keys on your iMac and it will show up as a screen for your MacBook Pro.

Am I able to use a iMac 27" as a monitor for my MacBook Pro 15" ?
Hi there,
Am I able to use a (mini display) iMac 27" as a secondary monitor for my (thunderbolt) MacBook Pro 15" ?
Are they able to connect to eachother?
Many thanks,
SeppieeI am under the impression that this kind of set up is not possible. However, there's a Cult of Mac article that talks about the feasability of such set up.

Is it possible to use an existing imac (2009) as a monitor for a new mini
Does anyone know if it's possible to use an existing imac as a monitor for a new mac mini?
Unless it's a late 2009 27-inch iMac, all of the ways of doing it require an existing network connection, which requires a standalone monitor.
