24" iMac won't start when iPod is connected

My 24" iMac won't start up/restart if my iPod is already connected to it. If I restart with the iPod connected, I just get a gray screen (with no apple logo) forever. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, any solution? I have Windows installed with boot camp, don't know if that's the problem, but I tried reseting the p-ram, but to no avail...
Intel iMac 24", 7600 GT, 500GB, 2GB. Titanium Powerbook 667 MHz G4, loaded.   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   30 GB iPod Video

My suggestion would be disconnect the iPod. That's just me though.

I'm guessing Boot Camp is the culprit. Whatever emulated BIOS it's using doesn't like the iPod as a startup disk.

  • Itunes will not start when ipod is connected

3G nano ipod when connected to windows xp,, Windows Expoler opens and shows ipod as "M" drive. But itunes starts only when I click icon on my desktop and dose not start when ipod is connected. When itunes runs it sees my ipod and all works fine. I have the box under Devices checked to start itunes when ipod connected. Thanks for your help

    Hello Loggroller,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you talking about the *Open iTunes when this iPod is connected* option from under your iPod's Summary tab? If not, make sure you have this option ticked as well.
It might not hurt to try and remove and re-install iTunes and all Apple related software using these instructions.

  • Computer won't start if ipod is connected

My computer won't start when my ipod (nano) is connected. He stucks in the post screen of the motherboard. Before the pc will check what the boot drive is. So, changes in boot devices in bios won't work. What can be the problem?

mardymar: Windows may be seeing the iPod as a bootable disk....the following link talks about confusion as a network drive and could be cuaisng the same.

Did you change your BIOS boot order - I think you might try that if the above link fails to help.

  • IMac won't start with Thunderbolt Display connected after firmware update

After updating my thunderbolt display firmware to version 1.2 this morning via the App Store, my mid-2014 iMac won't start up with the external display connected.  I can get the iMac to start up only by disconnecting the display's thunderbolt connector. After the iMac comes up, I can reconnect the display and everything appears to function normally.  I've tried several restarts and the iMac won't start up with the display connected.  Anyone else experience this?

  • MacBook/iMac won't boot if iPod is connected

Neither my iMac Core 2 Duo or MacBook Core 2 Duo will boot when my 5th generation (mk 1) iPod is connected. The Mac just sits at the grey screen that initially appears when you first switch the Mac on. No Apple logo, nothing. As soon as you remove the iPod the Mac boots. I have tried leaving the machine for 20 minutes but it still just sits at the grey screen if the Pod is connected.
    anyone else seeing this?
    Stu

If you have the dock disconnected (and everything else except an Apple keyboard and mouse, and the iPod) and it still happens, then the first thing I'd be wondering about would be a conflict with the driver software for one of the other devices.
One good first step might be to make sure that there are no "non-universal" device drivers installed - see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303209 for details.

  • IMac won't start when Thunderbolt RAID is connected

    Hi,
I've been having this issue for several months. When I start the iMac (late 2012) the Pegasus R4 RAID will automatically turn on as it should. However the iMac stays stuck at the grey screen before the Apple logo appears until I unplug the Pegasus thunderbolt cable. Sometimes I also have to restart the iMac at this point before it will boot further.
I remember in the first months when I got the iMac and Pegasus I never had this issue up until a certain point before summer.
I read in other discussions that external harddrives power connectors sometimes cause this type of trouble. But isn't the Pegasus R4 advertised and sold by Apple? There shouldn't be an incompatibility issue then, right?
    Thanks for any help.

  • ITunes not starting when iPod is connected

New problem. Ipod nano 4th gen working fine until today (new 1 week ago). Today, when I connect with my computer (windows XP SP3), instead of auto-starting iTunes, the computer opens up a separate window for the nano (treating it as a drive).
If I start iTunes separately, it will see and sync with the iPod, but sometimes a separate window for the iPod will open up at the same time as it is synchronizing.
I tried resetting the iPod--no change. Restarted computer--no change. Restored the iPod--no change.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

That tab was already checked. In the meantime, I kept looking around.
I found a "run diagnostics" item in the iTunes help menu. I selected "iPhone/iPod connectivity tests." It showed that iTunes Helper was not installed. It linked to a web page that gave more instructions that seemed pretty drastic. So...
On a hunch, I went to the windows System Configuration Utility, went to the Startup tab. Sure enough, there is an iTunes Helper as an option to load at startup (but not selected). So I selected it, clicked OK, restarted the computer. Connected the iPod, now works perfectly (I think). Re-ran the diagnostics test, and it passes.

  • ITunes won't open when iPod is connected

    Hello,
I tried syncing my 3rd Generation Ipod Nano like I always do, via a dock connector and my laptop. But when I plugged it in it at first wasn't being recognized by iTunes (10), so I closed the program to see if a reboot of the program would solve the problem, and now iTunes just won't open while my iPod is plugged in to my laptop! Once I unplug though, iTunes pops back up!!
More information: It looks like my laptop may not be recognizing the USB Port that I plugged my dock connector in to. I don't get that symbol in the Notification Area that something is plugged in to a USB Port. I've tried other ones though, same problem.
I've also had to unplug my iPod from the connector without ejecting it (as iTunes wasn't recognizing the device, so I couldn't) will this damage my iPod?
