24" LCD for 2009 Mini - HP vs NEC vs Dell

I have a new 2009 Mac Mini (with Nvidia chipset) - looking for the best midrange full HD LCD (1920x1200).
I'm considering HP LP2475w, Dell 2408WFP or NEC LCD24WMGX3, with current preference for the HP - but have heard horror stories about problems connecting the new nVidia 9400m Macs to external monitors.
Any recommendations?

Little question : Will it work with two of those displays (with adaptaters : MiniDisplay --> DVI and Mini-DVI---> DVI) ? So 2 24" Displays on the New Mac Mini (2009).

what are the sortcomings of the older model when it comes to using it as media center.
I will primarily be watching DVD's, netflix and Hulu streams, and ripped media, and recorded broadcast media. I don't think any of these formats will be truly HD. I could end up watching over the air HD broadcasts. Also listening to CDs, CD rips, and podcasts.
What are the benefits of the of the newer nvidia video chips when it comes to this sort of use. I'm looking at a $200 dollar difference and wonder if is worth it.
There is also the firewire 800 in the newer mini. I wonder if the throughput from an external drive is necessary to play certain types of media (that USB 2 would be insufficient for).

I've got the older Mini (bought it in Januari, this year, before the update..), I usually have video's and music stored on my Mac Pro, both are connected via gigabit ethernet and the Mini 'streams' the media from the Pro without problems.
I think a harddisk connected via USB2 would be fast enough to store and watch video, at least up to 720p. (I have no 1080p video to try it with at the moment)
The newer Mini does have the faster videochip, as you say, I don't know how much of an influence that will have when Snow Leopard is released next month. (it doesn't really matter right now, for playing video, that is...)
If you're planning to play the occasional game then I'd go with the newer Mini.

Multi-Display Question for Late 2009 Mini

Hello, I have a very quick question. I was looking at attaching an additional monitor to my late 2009 Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz. It has two ports for video, the *Mini Displayport* and the *Mini DVI*. I was looking at springing for the $20 adaptor so that I could add a second VGA monitor via the displayport but I am curious, is there any additional hardware required to run a second monitor from my mini other than the adaptor? I would like to add to my desktop space so I want more than just a mirror. Is there any chance that someone here could please point me in the right direction?

I already am using a VGA adapter for the Mini DVI port which is what I run my current single screen off of.
The overview for the adapter seems to suggest that I can use it to extend my desktop (which is more than just creating a mirror?), but I am not sure that the model I have has that capability. I read somewhere that you need to add a second video card but I am not quite sure if that only applies to PCs.

You know, it's ok to ask! If I was you, I'd try asking them at the Apple store or, if you got the iPad at the Verizon store, go there. It won't hurt to ask - just tell them you don't know how to do it and don't want to mess it up. It's a little difficult to do it right - I got that kind of thing for my Macbook Pro for the bottom where your hand rests and had a hard time putting it on. So, go ahead and ask. If they're too busy, read the instructions a couple of times and wait until you have plenty of time and are relaxed and try it yourself.
I know you can do it if necessary!

New bootable drives for pre-2009 Mini's ???

I'm trying to keep an old G4 mini running with 10.4.11 such as to maintain access to Classic mode (old files and apps).
I've been booting this (and other 'classic' Mini's) from external Firewire 400 mirrored RAID sets 'since forever' with NO issues at all (great speeds vs 2.5" internal HD)
Recently I had one slice (drive) of this RAID set go bad. Figuring that the other one wouldn't be far behind, I order 2 new external FW800 drives ("Ministack Classic"). (after having questioned the compatibility of FW 400 with 800 and specifying to the vendor that these were intended as boot drives for a G4 Mini and then being convinced there would be no problem).
Only to discover (through a LONG confounding process with vendor's tech support) that the chip sets used in todays external drives will NOT boot a pre-2009 Mac Mini (neither a PPC or Intel)
These drives DO mount, RAID is online, reads and writes, CCC indicates its bootable, and the System recognizes it as a bootable device BUT It will not /can not boot.
Other (older) FW400 RAID sets do boot the machine flawlessly but not any available replacement drives I can locate.
Neither OWC, CDW or MacMall (et al) have any drives with boot chips sets compatible with older (pre-2009) Mini's - ***?
NOW WHAT ???

1) over the years I've asked dozens of questions on this forum. I've NEVER gotten a straight answer to any inquiry. Just obfuscation - mostly well-intentioned, some creative - yet irrelevant.
2) to the current issue. Turns out that external firewire drives with either Oxford 934 or 936 chip sets WILL still boot pre-2009 Macs, including G4's (i.e, MacMini 10,1) running 10.3 or above
3) Some Oxford 940-series chip sets may also still be bootable on pre-2009 Macs (only) IF the enclosure has a switch inside that turns of support for drives in excess of 2.2 TB (and the drive itself is less than 2.2 TB)
4) These drives ARE still available - at least from OWC (More than one of their techs was misinformed and I'm now assured by a senior tech that the above information is correct. If this is not correct, blame them. I'm just repeating what I was just told and only trying to help clarify what the situation is currently.

IMac 24" (early 2009) Mini Display to HDMI possible?

As there is no Mini Display to HDMI adapter available as of yet I tried to connect a new 24" iMac (early 2009) to a Sharp LCD TV via: Mini Display --> DVI --> HDMI.
Although the iMac recognizes the Sharp and switches resolution automatically (I also tried every other available resolution) the TV screen stays black (HDMI is EXT 5, but I also tried the other EXTs).
I googled and it seems to me that our setup works for some people with some LCD TVs (Sharp too).
Any thoughts where the problem here could be?

Open System Preferences Displays pane Display tab. If there are two displays being recognized, there should also be an Arrangement tab, but stay on the Display tab.
Click the button that says +Gather Windows+. Although you cannot see the image on the TV (since you say it is black), you should now get the control window for that TV display on your iMac's display.
Try making adjustments to the resolution and refresh rate to see if you can get a response on the TV's screen.

Using Cinema Display and Samsung LCD with One Mini

I have been trying unsuccessful to output the DVI of my mini to my 23" Apple Cinema and my Samsung 4669F (native resolution of 1920x 1080p). I have tried various methods including using the Gefen 1:2 DVI Splitter (Ext-DVI-144) and a DVI-HDMI cable to the samsung in conjunction with SwitchResX, all to no avail.
Any help?- I wish to mirror the same display on both LCD screen simultaneously?- However, I would settle for a solution of a convenient A/B switch? ANy tips?
What about an external USB video card for the Mini- that should work too?- any tips?
I used SwitchResX because I determine that because the 23" ACD was 1920 x1200, the Samsung was not displaying because the Gefen splitter box was sending the same signal in 1920 x1200 to the Samsung, which was not accepted by the Samsung whose native resolution is 1920 x 1080p. However, once I switched the resolution to 1920 x 1080 to force an out of the mini to that resolution, there was no display at all on the 23" ACD and I had to do a safe mode reboot to recover the display on the 23" ACD?-
One would think that it would be relatively easier for Apple to create a script that would allow a person to display 1920 x 1080p on the Cinema Display, a script that overrided the message from the ACD that tells the mac mini to stretch any resolution to 1920x1200 before it gets to the 23" - This way I could use SwitchResX and the Gefen splitter to output 1920x1080p to both displays at once (of course the 23" ACD would have to have some black borders on the top and bottom. Why doesn't apple make this available? - Spent $900 on this monitor and the Mini has a DVI output- why should the Gefen splitter be rendered useless simply because my other display is a different native resolution.

Help! My ViewSonic monitor doesn't want to work w/ my Early 2009 Mini!

Have an 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4gb RAM, Early 2009 Mini (macmini3,1), 10.6.8 Snow Leapord with a ViewSonic VA1703wb monitor.
My problem started a few weeks ago. All of a sudden I discovered that if I turned my ViewSonic VA1703wb monitor on before the Mini, the power button was green, but the screen was black. Turning the Mini on then the monitor seemed to get it to work. Now for the last few days, the monitor either would show the Apple logo and then go black or just have the power light blink green and sometimes yellow with the screen slightly flashing, but was black (with the Apple logo screen not even coming up). I have the two different adapters to use to plug in VGA. I've been using the Mini-DVI port adapter since I got the Mini a few years ago (on eBay which came w/ the orignial box, discs, manuals etc.) w/ no problems.
Tried the Mini Display port adapter that I had in storage and it did the same thing! Then I remembered that there was another adapter in the Mini's box. Happen to have a Apple Studio Diplay and would you believe the adapter (Mini-DVI to DVI) in the box fit on the end of the Display's cable!! I couldn't believe my luck! And, the Mini works with it! At least I got it to work! The "About This Mac" says the following for the display: NVIDIA GeForce 9400, 256MB RAM, Display Connector Status: No display connected. (How can it say that "no display is connected, when the Studio Display is??? I'm typing this using the Studio Display!) I also have an MDD and hooked the ViewSonic up to it and it works!
When I did get the ViewSonic to work with the Mini, I noticed that my desktop photo wasn't showing, just the Snow Leopard purple space one. I put my photo back on the ViewSonic. When I got the Apple Studio Display working, it at first didn't have my photo showing, just the purple one. And it didn't have any icons etc. Had to power shut off the Mini and then start it up again and then everything was showing up fine.
The other day I read that the adapter has a firmware update from Apple and that maybe the problem. Can't understand why an adapter has firmware. Also I've read that the PRAM (called something else w/ Intel) may need reseting or that the HD could be going downhill! I was also wondering if the video card was messing up. I hope and pray the problem is only software, as I'm not going to take the case apart and have something break in the process. I've replaced hard drives, RAM, PRAM batteries and a card in PowerMacs with not much difficulty. If my Mini was the newer design where you can take the bottom off, then that would be fine... Since the Mini works with the Studio Display, I wouldn't think it was the video card, but with computers anything is possible. I will be sick if it's the hard drive! 99% of my documents and photos are stored on a USB drive (as to not fill up the 120GB HD).
Sure hope someone can assist me with this nerve-wracking problem. Thank goodness I have the MDD as a back-up, but its RAM is maxed out to 2GB and it seems slow on the Internet and when I edit photos.

Well, VGA & DVI use different ins on the adapter, so it is likely some HW issue.
The purple space issue sounds like the Mini thought it was a second extended display.

GB 09 - MBP locks up for 3 mins after hitting record

Basically the whole computer locks up and I can't do anything. Get the spinning beach ball etc. Then after approx 3 mins the playhead starts and I can record and switch to other programs etc. This is incredibly painful and annoying to the recording process...waiting for 3 mins after I hit record.
I have a USB mic (AT2020) and thought this may be the issue however even with the internal mic it does the same thing.
The even bigger quirk in all this is that if I reboot the MBP and load GB 09 I can record instantly on the first try...every subsequent attempt invokes the 3 min lockup...
FYI I have a Mid 2009 MBP with 500gb 7200rpm HDD, 2.8Ghz Core Duo, and 8gb of 1066 RAM
Any help or suggestions will be much welcomed!

I need to display a wide quicktime movie across two matching 1920 x 1080 screens.
I'd rather use a mini than 2 usb players and a sync board.
Will this work?
I think that the mini has one output that is HDMI, and the other DVI (?)

Dual screen KVMs do exist, but they're usually not cheap. A couple of online places that advertise them:

I have a 2009 Mini with two screens. Both screens are attached to "single screen" KVMs. KVM1 is to switch between the Mini and a desktop PC, using the PC's keyboard. KVM2 is to switch the second screen between the Mini and a Windows Server, using the server's keyboard. The Mini also has the Apple keyboard and mouse attached. So in "Mac mode", I have three keyboards and mice. Obviously, I have a unique situation and if you want to switch both screens to the same PC, then this el-cheapo dual-screen KVM won't work. Perhaps if you don't mind having the multiple keyboards, but it's still going to be two steps to switch both monitors instead of just one.

2009 Mini is extremely slow

I bought this latest mini as soon as it came out earlier this year. It's upgraded to the 2.26GHz processor and has 4GB SDRAM installed. The HDD is a 7200RPM 320GB and is formatted as GUID. I'm connected to an Apple 23" cinema display. I'm running Leopard 10.5.7. I don't have any haxies installed. It replaced a two-year-old Mini 1.83 with 2GB. The old Mini's HDD is the same one that's in the new Mini; I just swapped it out when i got the new one.
Subjectively I'm extremely disappointed in this unit as it's sluggish as all get out. If I wake it up, it takes forever for all the running apps (about seven or eight) to wake up and display their respective windows.
If I open a Finder window it also takes forever to load all the icons in List view and to compute the file sizes. Turning off the file size option doesn't make it much faster.
Safari 4.01 is often slower than molasses in January, taking a long time to load and display simple sites.
I have a near clone of this setup on a Macbook 13" early 2008 2.24Ghz model and that laptop can run circles around my Mini in terms of speed, waking up, loading files, everything.
Does anyone have any suggestions about what I should be looking for in terms of fixing the speed issue? Is there any way of determining if it's the monitor other than getting another monitor and checking?

I'd second the recommendation to fire up Activity Monitor and see if any processes are hogging the CPU. And click on the system memory tab in AM to find out the ratio of PageOuts to PageIns. If this is substantially more than 10%, then you are over-working the virtual memory system (your hard drive), and this may be due to running a program with a memory leak, or running too many programs at one time.
I'd ignore the Safari 4.x issues for the moment, since it seems to have its own problems, worthy of a separate thread. In fact I'd switch to Firefox until you get the rest of the issues with this Mini sorted out.
The first alarm that went off in my brain when I read your narrative was that you apparently simply moved your old Mini's HD and OSX installation to your new Mini. I can't help but wonder if the newer Mini doesn't care for something about that old installation.
My second question is whether the 4Gig of RAM is factory installed, or something you bought and installed. We recently had a report in this forum of a user whose 2009 Mini was performing slowly, and it turned out that replacing his aftermarket RAM with a better quality product cleared up the issue.
Short of doing a clean install of OSX on your old hard drive (using the install disc that came with the new Mini), installing the 10.5.7 combo update (or re-installing it) may clear up some issues that migrated from your old Mini.
Another factor to keep in mind is that for best performance, you should try to keep adequate free space on the startup drive - typically 10% or more is recommended.
As the previous poster asked, it would be good to know if this Mini ever performed better - for example, before you upgraded it.
I have to ask ... you have run DiskUtility on this hard drive and verified it, repaired permissions, and confirmed that the SMART status is OK?
It also seems like it would be a good idea to clear out all the system caches from the old hard drive, using a utility like Yasu.

Remote/Dual Monitor for Mac Mini

Bottom Line Up Front: I want my Mini to remain connected to my stereo receiver/HDTV and have a second monitor, keyboard and mouse in another room.
I have a late 2009 Mini in my entertainment center used for photos, music and streaming. During my remodel, I had two ethernet cables run from behind the entertainment center to my office downstairs (I was trying to future proof..) I have now decided how I would like to use the cables, if possible.
The Mini is an underutilized computer (as is the circa 2006 iMac in my office but that is another story). In an effort to reduce the number of computers I own, I would like to have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse in the office connected to the Mini in the entertainment center while keeping the stereo receiver/HDTV upstairs connected, enabling me to get rid of the old iMac in the office. I want the displays to be mirrored (showing the same image).
My late 2009 Mini is suitable for my needs, but woud consider upgrading to a new Mini if that is what it takes to get what I want. If there is a way to do what I want with my current setup, would like to hear it.
If I do upgrade, what would be the best way to connect the monitor in the office? I would keep the HDMI output connected to the stereo receiver/HDTV.
One way I think would work is use airplay and an Apple TV (would need to purchase) to mirror to the monitor in the office and use one of the ethernet cables to carry the keyboard/mouse inputs (Bluetooth won't reach).
Would a Thundrbolt to ethernet adapter carry the audio/video signal to the office? I couldn't find anything definiteve saying this possible. This would entail buying two TB adapters which is quickly approaching the price of an Apple TV.
Any thoughts, recommendations or suggestions are welcome.

Anyone Using Parallels or VMWare on Early 2009 mini 2.0GHz?

There's been some controversy as to whether the Early 2009 mini 2.0GHz has VT-x (needed for fast virtualization) enabled. The stock P7350 Intel processor in it has VT-x disabled, but Apple is supposedly getting a custom version with VT-x enabled.
I'm just trying to find some final confirmation on this subject: people actually using Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion on this machine.
I'd be especially interested in reports of a 64-bit Windows version as guest as this apparently absolutely requires VT-x to be working (not just falsely reporting so, or "sort-of" implemented but flawed).

I've seen confirmation from screenshots of people using Parallels, and from various CPU identifier tools in OSX and running Windows via Boot Camp.
What I can't comprehend is why Apple doesn't advertise the fact.
Thinking that the bottom-end Mini didn't have Vt (and not wanting to deal with special-orders) I bought a new Windows PC rather than a new Mac last month.
(I'll get around to the Mac; since I run both, they both need periodic upgrades. But Apple threw away money last month because they couldn't bother to make it clear that both Minis support Vt.
Since they're happy to sell Parallels and VMWare through their store, you'd think they'd want to make it clear...)

2009 mini shutting down at random intervals

I have a 2009 Mini Mac that I'd really like to keep but think I may need to throw away. The machine powers off whenever it reaches a fairly normal operating temperature. If I put it in the freezer overnight, (in a ziplock bag, of course) I can make it run for about 30 minutes. Anytime after that, it will shut off. Sometimes it will run quite steadily, but only when it's completely idle. When it's busy, it will inevitably shut off. I've swapped the hard drive, but that didn't help. The unit is clean inside and is not getting particularly warm anywhere.
I'm wondering whether there the are one or more temperature sensors inside that I could replace or remove. Are there any external ones or are they built into the motherboard?
