24" led + 20" dvi pivoted?

would the following work simultaneously? a 24" led cinema for movie watching, and a 20" dvi cinema pivoted (rotated 90 degrees with a vesa stand) for web browsing? is it possible to tell vlc or front row (=quicktime?) to output movies to the 24" led (with de-pivoted image)?
some other questions: how far between could I put these monitors, ie what is the maximum length of the mdp and dvi cables? the mdp is short, but are there extension cords? also, is it possible to turn on the mac mini via the 20" dvi cinema's power button and the apple remote respectively? thanks.

  • Weird display behaviour on MacPro 3,1, 2 screen set-up

Hi I recently went to a 2 screen set up running off the standard ATI Radeon HD 2600 Graphics Card which was pre-installed on my MacPro 3,1.
    (A) Monitor one is a 24" Widescreen Syncmaster SMBX2440 (LED) connected DVI-D to DVI-D
    (B) Monitor two is a 19" Samsung Syncmaster 192v (LCD) Working fine via a VGA Adapter from a DVI-D port.
All has been working fine for about 2 months with no problems whatsoever, but recently the main LED monitor (A) has started displaying weird graphic 'smears' across the screen momentarily, for a few seconds and then gone. I find these 'Smears' really intrusive, and have been wondering what is causing them. I managed to get a screenshot of one:
These smears also occur when viewing or interacting with any Flash content. As the screenshot worked, I can only summise that the problem is not with the monitor or the lead which connects it but is an internal issue with my computer.
I am wondering if my Graphics Card is failing, I have swapped the ports over for the monitors but it's still the main LED monitor (A) which shows these smears and not the LCD Syncmaster (B).
Can anyone shed any light on what's causing these 'smears' and suggest a potential fix. I don't mind replacing the graphics card, but I'd rather know it'll fix the problem before investing.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Paul

  • Video cuts out during games - Black screen

    HI,
I've been trying to troubleshoot a problem for the past few months. I've searched these forums and several others without much luck.
    System:
    MSI P6N SLI
    Intel Core 2 6420
    Silverstone ST75ZF 750w (quad +12v rail)
    EVGA 8800GTS --> PNY Geforce 9800 GT XR8
    Mushkin DDR2 800 1gb x2 = 2gb total --> new 1gb x2
    Viewsonic VX1940w 19" LED w/ DVI
Onboard sound --> Creative XFI gamer card
x1 HDD SATA, x1 DVD RW
Playing games like Bioshock causes the monitor to go black when I encounter flashing explosions. IE Bioshock, after each death, right after the screen turns to white, the monitor goes black every time while the game continues. Cannot tab out to reset video; I have to have power cycle the monitor in order to have the video come back. Also happens on Combat Arms when I get hit with a flashbang grenade.
I changed the video card from the 8800 to the 9800 because the 8800 was extremely hot. 90C! Changing it out for the 9800 seemed to fix one game, not Bioshock or Combat Arms though. The 9800 runs cool, 50C max.
CPU runs no higher than 35C. Memory - did x86 memtest. 3 passes, no errors. I swapped out the current set of Mushkins for another set, didn't solve it. Nothing's overclocked or manually adjusted. Air-cooled case also swapped for the Antec 900; there's plenty of circulation.
I turned off the onboard sound and put in a Creative XFI card. No help. Swapped out the wifi card also - G --> N.
I've changed everything except for the mobo, CPU, power, and monitor. None of these I look forward to replacing so, MSI peeps, help!~
    Thanks for reading.

    Hello and welcome,
In bios, what is the frequency of your PCI-E bus, it should be 100.
Did you try new drivers? Sometimes its a driver issue, since its only in a few games.
Remove ALL drivers files, with for instance drivercleaner, reboot and install the latest ones from Nvidia site.
Also, patch the games to the latest version, sometimes its a game problem.
And last, try your computer on a different screen and see if problem persists
    Hi DaLoona,
    Thank you for your reply.
    PCI-E Freq. = 100
Drivers= I have updated before to the newest drivers and wiped the previous with Drivercleaner but no difference noticed. I will try again with the latest drivers to be sure.
Different monitor = yes, I will check that eventually.
    Thanks again,
    Bastiat

    Hi,
I am trying to connect my Mid-2009 Macbook Pro to my new YAMAKASI CATLEAP Q270 SE 27" LED 2560X1440 WQHD DVI-D Dual Computer Monitor.  I am not having a lot of luck.
    My machine:
    OS: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
Processor:  2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
I am trying to connect it using the:
Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
    DVD-D HDMI cable

    Here is what is happening.
    1. I connect the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter + HDMI Cable to Monitor
    2. Main monitor powers up like it is trying to display
    3. Laptop Monitor displays second part of desktop
    4. I can never get the Yamakasi to display a picture
Here is what I have tried:
    1. Different HDMI-D cables
    2. ATLONA AT-DP400 Dual Link DVI to Mini Display Port Converter
    3. Zapping the P-Ram
    4. Powering monitor with laptop closed
    5. Forcing the system to see the second monitor
    The nearest I can figure:
    - The laptop does see the catsleap (it displays resolutions I can set it to)
I am completely stumped, I was hoping someone could advise me.
    Thanks,

    Hey Kytarx,
I found the winning combination this weekend.
    I tried:
    - Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
    - ATLONA AT-DP400 Dual Link DVI to Mini Display Port Converter
    - Monoprice Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI®, DVI & DisplayPort Adapter
    My experience:
    - Altona didn't work at all, and their support claimed it would not.
    - Monoprice didn't work to Dual DVI, it did work to HDMI (great price I wish it did)
    - Apple Mini Displayport adapter did work, but would only work with certain USB + Display port combos.
The thing that was tripping me up was that two of the Dual DVI-D cords were bad.  Once I found the working cord, it was easier to find the working adapter.  The experience I did find to be a frustrating / expensive one. However, the Monitor itself is beautiful.
    Hopefully this helps someone else..
    Don

  • Possible to use old macbook (mini dvi port) with 24 in LED display?

Is there a combo of adaptors that will allow me to use my older macbook (mini-DVI port) with the new apple LED screens- i.e. adaptors allowing mini-DVI to mini displayport connector that comes with monitor?

You need this component and a mini DVI to DVI adapter.

  • Apple 24 LED cinema display iogear dvi kvm

I want a good kvm solutiuon for swtiching a 24" LED Cinema display. I am swtiching between two mac computers. I have the altona minidisplay port kvm, which works ok, but I find it to be a little flaky. I purchased the 2 port professional startech USB kvm/hotkey with the displayport to minidisplay port cable. Unfortunatley, this did not work. The apple display would not power up.
I was thinking about returning this and purchasing the GCS1782 iogear dual link DVI. I would need a mini-dispaly port to DVi converter. Has anyone tried something like this?
As far as I know there is only the altona minidisplayport kvm (now discontinued) and I am not really happy with that. I am kind of pulling my hair out. I want a reliable, hotkey mac compatable, kvm solution that is easy use.
    Any advice would be great!!!!

As another suggestion, I would also be interested in a HDMI KVM solution as well....

  • DVI Adapter for LED Cinema Display Mini DisplayPort?

Is there an adapter for use with the new LED Cinema display port? I expect the new Mini's to switch to the Mini DisplayPort, if there is a new Mini, but in the meantime ...
Now that everything is going black, glass and aluminum, when is Apple going to update:
    1) Keyboards to black keys?
    2) Mouse to black and/or aluminum?
    3) Mini, AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule to black & aluminum?
    4) Power Adapters, Airport Express, cables, etc. to black and/or aluminum?
    Finally a unified product line/look!

Actually after thinking about it, the immediate solution is likely a short DVI extension cord combined with the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. I would prefer a small Apple adapter to ship with the display however, much in the same way as the DB-15 adapter shipped with the VGA version of the old LCD Studio Display, or at least make one for sale. Guess Apple is leaving this up to third parties as usual.
The Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter would not work in this case as it is a male (Mini DisplayPort) to female (DVI) adapter. The new 24" Cinema Display has a non-removable cable ending in a male (Mini DisplayPort). As a male plug will not connect to a male plug it will not work.
I am sure soon enough various third-parties like Gefen, Griffin, and Belkin will come up with suitable adapters which do have the right genders. It is somewhat disappointing Apple have not done this themselves as I am sure plenty of Mac Pro owners are also salivating over this new display.
Arguably, Apple are repeating the same mistake they made with the ACD (Apple Cinema Display) connector and making it much harder and more expensive to use their displays with non Apple computers. That is they should have stuck with a standard DisplayPort connector rather than the esoteric Mini DisplayPort.
I equally hope someone comes up with Mini DisplayPort to (big) DisplayPort adapters as well.
On a totally different topic, I was also surprised and disappointed Apple did not switch to 16:9 displays for these new products (they are all still 16:10). The rest of the industry has already started switching to 16:9 displays and the clear trend is that 16:10 is on its way out. Still, the black border of these Apple displays does very conveniently hide the blank pixels (when playing a 16:9 video).

  • 24" LED Display from DP/HDMI/DVI

I have a 24" LED Display and I'm looking to use it with a homebrew PC. The video card I'd like to buy has output in DVI, HDMI and regular DisplayPort (but not Mini DisplayPort).
I would think that going between regular DP and mini DP would be easy, but I haven't been able to find adapters that go from male DP to female mini-DP. Am I going to need to buy a video card that specifically outputs in mini-DP?
    Thanks

  • LED Display - New 27 inch MiniDisplayPort to DVI

    Hi all!
I know I may be a little foreseeing, but will the new LED 27 inch Display work with a single link adaptor DVI.
I have a Radeon 4870 HD gfx and I want to use this new display with my current 22 inch display that will use one of the two DVI ports on the card.

I have a 27 inch Apple Cinema Display and I am using an Altona DP400 adapter to connect it to my 2008 Mac Pro. The Mac Pro has a Nvidia 8800 GT graphics card installed and the ACD is acting as a second monitor.
I can confirm this solution is defective. The issues are:
    1) There is no brightness control for the second monitor.
    2) The second monitor does not power back on if power is interrupted. For instance, if I press the reset button on the Altona adapter, the monitor will not come back to life.
    3) Several key combinations cause the monitor to switch into mirrored mode. I am not sure what they are (because I have trouble repeating them and type fast), but they are standard key combinations in the Eclipse IDE.
Trying to get this working, I have contacted Apple several times. Originally, they told me to purchase a mini-dvi to DVI adapter for the monitor, which did not work (obviously) because the monitor has a DisplayPort adapter. Apple failed to recognize this on the support call or when I visited an Apple store and explained what I was trying to do. The adapter they sold me cost $40 and had the wrong ports.
When I called Apple a second time, they turned me onto the Altona adapter. I ordered it, hooked it up, and have spent the better part of a day trying to get it to work. I attempted to adjust the monitor by resetting the Altona device, which has an onboard button for resetting. This turned the ACD off and there was no way to restart it without resetting the computer. I tried unplugging the ACD from the adapter, unplugging the adapter from the Mac, unplugging the USB from the Mac, it simply stayed off.
Given these issues, I would not recommend this monitor to anyone. I have replaced it with an older Westinghouse monitor as a secondary display for the Mac. The Westinghouse monitor has more defects, certainly, but it only cost $230 compared to the $1328 I have spent on the ACD solution.

  • 24" LED display with MacBook Pro & DVI output

Simple question. Just bought the 24" LED display. then learned that it won't connect to my 18 month old PacBook Pro out of the box. People have suggested many scenarios for solving this seemingly simple problem, but the two leading threads are in conflict.
Some say i need a complete adapter box. others say i can make the connection with a simple MDP-to-DVI connector.
Need more recommendations please. Thanks to all

The simple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters are for connecting DVI displays to Mini DisplayPort computers. To connect a Mini DisplayPort display to a DVI computer you need a converter

  • Mac Book Pro DVI and Display LED 27" + Atlona DP400 - Issue with Aperture

    Hello,
I bought the new LED 27" and connect it through the Atlona DP400 to my "old" Macbook Pro with a DVI port.
    Works well except with Aperture.
I can launch the application, navigate though the project and the pictures, but when I want to work on a picture, the mac is blocked and the only way to exit this situation is a hard reboot.
Does anyone had the same issue ? and found some solution ?
    Thanks

Interesting. I usually expect newer OS versions to cause issues with older boxes rather than to solve them.
Glad it worked out for you.

  • How can I connect a laptop with DVI to an Apple LED Cinema Display 27"

I have an old Mac Book Pro 2007 and a PC laptop, both with DVI.
I simply can't find a DVI to mini display adapter.
    Can this be true?

Be careful. Make sure your laptop's DVI output is a dual-link DVI output. Otherwise it won't work correctly with the 27" through any adapter.

  • Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter to connect Win7 tower to iMac / Target Display Mode

I currently run Windows on bootcamp on the iMac (Mid-2011), although the tasks I perform (3D modelling, rendering and such) cause the Mac to get very hot, and as a result hae a slight burn mark on the LED LCD screen.
I am buying a Windows machine, and am to uninstall bootcamp and use the Mac purely for OSX, but use the iMac screen as a monitor for the tower using Target Display Mode. My issue is - the Windows 7 tower only has DVI output. And as I understand, the Mid-2011 iMac only supports Target Display Mode via a thunderbolt cable.
My question is - Will the Apple Mini DVI to DVI adapter allow me to connect the DVI-only tower to the iMac? Thanks in advance x

Oh, I should mention also that the iMac is the 27" model. Mid-2011 3.4Ghz Intel Core i7 with 4GB RAM and 1TB Harddrive. And ATI HD5450 1GB Graphics.
