'24 Track Recording' - all channels peak at 3db

It seems that if I start a new song with the '24 Track Recording' template, all my audio and instrument channels peak at 3db. Is that normal?
I checked and it doesn't matter whether the played back file is 24 or 16 bit.
How do I change it so that it shows peaks at 0.
I searched through all the preferences I could find, but could not find a 'Channel level' setting.
Any help or advice appreciated.

i think we need a little more detail in your question. why don't you just drag the sliders down? in any case you can run audio out in logic really hot before you have any distortion or clipping. in fact, logic sounds better driven hard. you only have to be careful when you are recording not to exceed 0 db. you can drag the master fader down for this.

  • Armed track records ALL tracks

I've tried searching for a solution to my problem before posting but couldn't find anything. Here's my problem:
When I arm a track for recording and then hit record all the music from my existing other tracks get recorded onto the new armed track, instead of just the input I am trying to record, in this case a guitar.
I assume it's something to do with the audio setup, soundcard config, input/output or monitoring etc. but I just can't figure it out. I've currently got my monitoring set to External Mix because when I select Audition Mix (Smart Input or Always Input) a horrible distortion creeps into my headphones & increases until I de-arm the track.
Also, I can hear my desired input in my headphones so it seems like the basic input is working. I just need to 'cut out' the input of all the other tracks.
I used to be able to record just fine, but my computer has had some rough times & something obviously changed in my setup.
    Thanks!

Thanks for responding. Everything seems to work right except for the when I plug into the 737. Ok let me see if I can be more clear. I had this set up done with two representatives of Neumann, and DBox. Here it is I hope this helps. 32 Channel snake (24 Inputs 8 outputs) Channels 1-8 from snake to my Octopre for Drums. From Octropre output quarter inch lines into the Apollo 2, quarter inch input. This is so that the Apollo 2 is taking the drum tracks. Snake Channel 9-12 into Apollo 1 channels 1-4 xlr. Snake Channel 13-16 into Apollo 2 Channels 1-4 xlr. Snake Channel 17 into the 737, output of 737 into Channel 5 of the Apollo 1 quarter inch.
Ok The Dbox. Sum output L&R into channel input 7&8 of Apollo 1. Apollo 1 output channels 1-8 into summing input channel 1-8 of Dbox. Apollo 1 main L&R going to main analog input L&R of Dbox. Spid out to DAW input of Dbox. I have both ADAT of both Apollos connected by optical wire. Also have port 2 of Apollo 1 into port 1 of Apollo 2 connected by Firewire.  Let me know. Hope I got it right. Thanks for responding.

This has only started since the second stage digital changeover, I have tried re-booting the system and unplugging the ariel to enable a fresh update of all channels but it's made no difference. Previously after the first stage changeover the blocking problems and weak signal warnings that started occuring evry couple of days were cleared by powering down and then switching back on.

  • X-Fi Platinum Multiple track record

??I have been doing a little reading on the forum for multiple track recording but I could not find anything specific enough for what i need. I have a Fostex digital recorder and i would like to either send out the multiple tracks of say a drum recording to multiple tracks on Majix Music Studio ten. I have been playing around with it but i cant find exactly what I need. Ideally I would like to use the ADAT format from a digital optical cable to bring in the individual wave files directly to the computer. But if?can find a better way or if sombody knows of a fairly inexpensi've digital mixer with at least 6 channels (any input preferably XLR). Also my recorder has SPDIF but only in a two track format. It also has MIDI outputs and inputs but so far I dont think I can use that?for controling my software and sending in multiple tracks. I know my program can do ASIO and WDM. But I dont know what inputs are assigned to what numbers. If any body can awnser any one of these questions please post. ASIO sounds great but how do I identify the track numbers to what input and can i input all the tracks from a digital input?Comp info:?Windows

W/ ASIO, you can record from as many sources as you get listed/selected separetley in ASIO input port list (meaning those w/ names like Line-In, S/PDIF-In, Mic-In, Aux-In since, there are many of those ports meant for internal routings (W-U-H)). I don't know if you can use S/PDIF and analog inputs simultaenously. Here are some detailed information for Creative ASIO drivers (for Audigy cards but ...) - http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=profaudio&message.id=726
I think that Fostex is not very usable for you if you don't build a ADAT system over it. If you have the ADAT option in Fostex already available there and you can get 8 separate channels out from Fostex through it then you could get a soundcard which supports ADAT I/O (something like E-MU 22m ($99 atm.)) and record through Fostex into PC (though, A/D conversion quality Fostex does is propably not very good). Maybe you need more mic-preamps to record drums then too.

  • Logic audio engine crashes while streaming video and recording 4 channels simultaneous audio

logic audio engine crashes while streaming video and recording 4 channels simultaneous audio

    Hi there,
I also wanted to thank you for your response and let you know that I have tried all those trouble shooting things you suggest to no avail.
it seems to me that the first explanations are most likely to be the case.
namely that the program can multithread while the plugs only use one processor (particularly EXS24) which is bloody useless.
also increasing the buffer to 1024 is not an option cause you gotta bloody lay tracks, which means you gotta hear the BG tracks and play yours on top in time otherwise, you record your new tracks and they are so out of time that it sounds like a little kid wanking on a guitar or whatever...
and of course for composition with midi intruments it doesn't work at all cause your latency becomes so huge that you would need a miracle to quantize your off time notes back to normal so that you can arrange, print score, etc.
either way, I hope that my tone is not disrespectful, it is aimed at apple in frustration, I'm grateful for your help.
    thank you

  • SB X-Fi and Multi-Track Recording

I have a SB X-Fi card pre-installed on my new Windows7 computer & I'm using Cakewalk HomeStudio7 for multi-track recording. The SB card is working OK. I can record from the Line-In correctly.
However, when I record in a new audio track, the other audio tracks are also mixed in, rather than just being audible in the mix.
I didn't have this problem with a generic sound card. I'm fairly certain there is a SB setting somewhere that will disable audio from being recorded and just use the Line-In instead. No idea where to look however. I don't believe this is related to Cakewalk.
How do you keep the SB Audio output from being included in a recording? It's not connected to the Line-In & Line-In is the default with everything else disabled.
    Thanks,
    Mark

As I understand, the digital IO module only works with some but not all x-fi cards.
Your reciever/amplifier has to decode the DTS or other 5. encoded stream. Check to see what format your reciever can understand, and make sure that you have checked those in the Control Panel / Sound / Advanced applet. If your amp supports a particular format only (and bit depth and sample rate) you might need to make sure the card is set for that and you might possibly even need a source in that format.
The 5. channels are in one data stream, the reciever decodes it; I think they mostly autodetect the protocols they can decode. However, if you decode it in the card, you can send out the 5. analog channels to the analog inputs on your amplifier.

  • Including effects in multi track recording

    Hi
was wondering if anyone could help me. I would like to know how (if possible) I could set a series of effects that are applied directly on a track by track basis during a multi track recording. I use a 16 channel USB interface and often record my band using +/- 10 tracks simultaneously. I now record the tracks via mics or DI outputs from amplifiers and then apply compression etc on a track by track basis after the initial data capture. I would like to be able to (for example), set a preset effect such as compressor and capture the audio with that effect applied in real time, just as I would if the signal went through a hardware compressor.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Tony

so what is the purpose of the MIXER tab in multi track view where one can apply effects on a track by track basis? I am imagining that AA3 would behave similar to a hardware console where the inputs can be managed effects wise by the effects available on the board.
Are the effects in the MIXER tab for playback only? I am confused. For example, if I set certain effects to channel X in the mixer tab, what does that do for me?
The effects are present for monitoring purposes, but because they've been passed through the entire system, they inevitably gain a degree of latency that makes them rather ineffective for direct monitoring purposes by a performer. In theory, you can apply reverb into a vocal performance and send it back to the vocalist, but if you do, you have to make sure that the direct signal doesn't go as well because the delay will be totally offputting. Invariably, if you want effects to listen to whilst recording, then external hardware does a better job, I'm afraid - and that's invariably a computer limitation.
So, if you add an effect in the mixer during recording, it will only be for monitoring purposes - the track will be recorded dry, as Bob says. And yes, that's always been industry practice - you always have a clean recording to return to if you screw up the effects, and that's invariably cheaper than a new session to re-record. You have to be careful though - when you replay your track it will still sound as though the effects are applied unless you remember to remove them from the mixer channel first. So the effect acts on the channel all the time, but never on the recording.
Yes, there is a way of cheating if you have a multi-I/O card. You feed the monitor output to a spare output pair, and re-record it on a spare input pair. This way you get a dry recording, and an effected one. It's rarely worth it, though.

  • Record all the data acquired by DAQ

    Hi all,
I have a problem when I tried to record all the data acquired by the DAQ card. My DAQ is NI 6259, and the Labview version is 2009.
Basically, what I need do is using multiple channels to get the voltages of different point, then I subtract values of two channel (V+ and V-) to get voltage value between two points. In my vi, the sampling mode is continuous and the rate is 100 KHz, DAQmx reading is inside a while loop, and the numbers of samples per channel is set to be 100. After each loop execution I would get 100 data.  I just used the format into file to write the data into a .txt file. It seems after 1 loop only the last one data is recorded instead of 100.  Previously I averaged the 100 data inside the acquisition loop to get one data, so the writing function is OK but it really slows down the program. So I want to write all the raw data to txt file so later I can process them in Matlab.  Is there any way to achieve this? Thank you very much.
The attached is the my vi for 2 channels voltage measurement and the current source control sub vi. I am new to Labview so the question really bothers me even after I read some similar topics in the forum.

Thank you for you reply. I tried that, it actually record more data per pulse than before, but less pulses were  recorded (there should be 8 pulses in 20 seconds time but only 2 were recorded), I think it was because the for loop inside slows down the program execution, and sometimes the error 200279 occurred.  I think it would be better to separate the reading and recording process. Someone suggests me rather than writing to the file inside the loop, accumulate the data from all of the loop iterations to generate one large array containing all of the samples then pass that to Format Into File outside the loop. Do you know how to achieve that? I tried the as below, it seems totally wrong , only two data was written.
(The subvi nameed 1 (see attachment) converts the 2D array to 1D ) Thanks.

    Multi-track recording question
Hey, just need some help on multi tracking using audition, hope this is the right forum?
Wanted to know if anyone has a clue about assigning inputs from an audio interface to separate tracks on a recording program (ie: Adobe audition)
I record live with my band alot, and have every amp and the kit mic'd up, but how do i make it so that each microphone is recording to a different track on the PC?
My interface is an M audio fast track ultra, if that is of any use.
    Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

In Audition, assuming that you can see all of the inputs available in the Hardware Setup, you find the right-facing arrow (input assign) on each track in MV's Main view, and you click on the box it's pointing to, go to Mono, and select the input you want for that particular track. The mono ones say [01M], [02M], etc. If you want to record a stereo track, then select the Stereo option where the inputs are paired and say [01S] et seq. This would have input 1 as left, input 2 as right.
If you can't see all of the inputs available, try selecting the ASIO driver in Hardware Setup...

  • How can I record several channels of data at different rates with the same card?

I am building an application in which I need to record several channels of DC voltage data to disk at different rates, for example, Channel 1 at 40 Hz, Channels 3-5 at 10 Hz, Channels 6-8 at 1 Hz, etc.
All these channels are time-referenced, so I need to make sure data for channels recorded at slower rates line up with their correct time stamp.
Currently, I am building all data into a 2D array one row per loop iteration.

    Hello;
At this time, the NI DAQ boards have only one scan clock, so, you can only define one valid scan rate for all of your channels.
The better approach for you is to sample all channels at the highest rate you will need, and then discard the samples you don't need to save.
    Hope this helps.

I think using the Functions/Transform/Demix command to separate the track into individual MIDI channels would be the easiest option, then he could used the merge command to put them back together.

    p.s.
I originally was going to post the solution below, until
    I reread the question.
I think he wants to change specific notes (ie: D#) across multiple MIDI channels.
He must have the AU MIDI channel set to "All" and changed MIDI transmission channels on his controller so he ends up with a multi channel track.
If that's it, the easiest way is to use the Matrix editor piano keyboard to select the note (it selects all channels) and then double click on a selected note to open the event editor which will have the all of the correct notes selected.

  • Multi Track Recording for a dummies (please help!)

    Background:
I've tried to search these forums and others for an answer to this question, but there is almost too much info out there and a lot of it is pretty confusing (for example: http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Tutorials/AggregateDevice.html )
    The Goal:
My nephew would like to record multiple tracks of audio into Garage Band at the same time. For example, 4 people each singing at the same time. (by the way, he has a brand new MacBook).
Neither he nor I know much about music equipment these days, although I have some experience from the early 90s.
From what I can tell, there are 2 options:
    1) Use a multi-track recorder.
Like this: http://www.zzounds.com/item--FOSMR8MKII ). First you record onto the included compact flash card, then you then you import each track into Garage Band (one track at a time?).
    2) Record all 4 tracks directly into Garage Band.
Option 2 seems like the best for his needs, but we can't quite figure out what device is needed. Somewhere we read that we need a "4 track audio interface" but somewhere else someone said that an audio interface would mix all 4 tracks together into 1. I also have no idea who the best manufacturers are these days, etc. I don't even know enough to do a decent google search.
We're not looking for something top-of-the-line. Just something solid and reliable with decent sound quality. Hoping to keep it under $250. He knows he is going to have to dive in and really learn Garage Band, but we are hoping that there is something out there that is as close to plug-and-play as possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i can't help but ask: what did you not understand in that? it shows you step by step what to click, there really isn't anything to understand, just follow the steps.
Well, the title of my post does say "for dummies" (actually its says "for a dummies" - nice proof reading on my part).
But to answer your question (if you really want to know), its daunting for someone with zero point zero Garage Band experience. Put yourself in the position of someone with no Garage Band knowledge whatsoever. Then read that post. It assumes that the reader at least knows why they are on that page, as opposed to having stumbled onto it through some random google link. It doesn't actually say up front anywhere that this is for recording multiple tracks into Garage Band. In fact, none of the steps are done inside Garage Band - its in a utility called "Audio Midi Setup."
I am not saying that its poorly written, or unclear, I just didn't "get it" at first. Keep in mind that I am working in the dark here and trying to get up the learning curve as quickly as I can. This is all new stuff to me - and I am just trying to help out my nephew.
Now subsequent to my original post, I found a FAQ on that site and then found this: http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Tutorials/RecordingMultipleTracks.html So now I understand that you can either use an "interface", or create this so called "aggregate device". Little by little its all falling into place. ( Also its seems like that is a really good site for Garage Band info. )
but somewhere else someone said that an audio interface would mix all 4 tracks together into 1.
that's a silly thing to say, it depends on the interface, the one linked to above will record to separate tracks.
Again, I am stumbling around in the dark. Cut me some slack. How was I supposed to know that something someone else wrote was silly?
But MOST importantly, you did give me a link to a device that will do what he wants, the Alesis MultiMix 8 USB. Thank You!!! Now if we could find one that's a little cheaper I'd really be in business.
