24G of invisible files: is this normal?

I have a 30G and an 80G hard drive, both of which tell me they're full. When I add up all the files I can find, the total is far, far less than what Get Info is indicating. What is eating up my storage space, and how do I find and eliminate it?
Thanks for the help. I'm at the end of my rope.

Trash - "preparing to empty trash" for 5 hours.  there are 97,000 files. is this normal?

And with 97000 files it IS going to take a "while".  Finder, in it's "infinite wisdom", counts the files and the deletes.  It's bad enough if it's on an internal drive for that many files, but I can only imagine how long it would take with a USB or firewire external. If you are really sure you want to delete all that stuff then some choices might be,
    1. Start the empty trash and go to bed!   Maybe, just maybe, it will be done in the morning.
    2. Use terminal to do it (won't supply the commands here, but it is a choice).
    3. Try a third party utility which hopefully will empty the trash like you would from terminal.  Try TrashIt.

  • Flash drives and SD/microsd heats up and slow while transferring files, is this normal?

My new macbook pro heats up my flash drives/sdhc/microsd while transferring files. I thought it was just the Micro sd itself (using MicroUSB adapter) but when plugging in a differnt flash drive it too was getting hot and quickly heating up. I also thought it is pretty slow for a Class 10, which i dont think it is the it could be the flash memory, is there something i am doing wrong? its using mac os x journaled format. This also happens when i plug it in the sdxc slot. Any ideas?

I had another apparently hung Time Machine backup today.
Starting Dashboard did NOT fix it this time. However, after what seemed like a long time (probably 5-10 minutes) it apparently freed up on its own and completed the backup normally. This makes it appear my previous result was just "coincidence".
There were a few error messages thrown into the Console this time by the "backupd" process -- An "Error(-43)" while apparently attempting to find a path to a file with a "null" name.
Despite that, the backup seems to have copied what it was supposed to copy.

I have converted m2ts files to .mov in streamclip,  for editing in fce 4.0.1. When I drag them into the fce timeline the clips need rendering, as much as a minute for a 30 second clip. To what codec, frame size & frame rate did you convert the files in Streamclip?
If it isn't AIC 720p30, you'll need to render.

  • Hi I seem have created duplicate preference files With the suffix "lock file". Is this normal? Thanks Geoff

I just been looking in my preference file folder to throw away the preferences for Final Cut and there seems to be duplications of the preference files with the suffix “lock file". Is this normal in OS 10.7? I look forward to any advice.
    Many thanks Geoff

I ended up logging an SR on Metalink. Here's the answer I got back:
    ---<snip>---
Yes, 500 MB is normal for 11.1.0.7.
First, you are correct, there is a log rotation policy. This is done automatically by Oracle for the Crsd, Ocssd, Evmd logs .
The default size of the cssd log after which they would be recycled in previous versions was 10MB. This has changed in 11.1.0.7 such that the size after which the logs are recycled is 50MB. This means that customers may see an increase in the CRS_HOME required from 100MB to 500MB. Customers whose home size cannot accommodate this should move the old ocssd.l0* files to another destination. Please do not move the existing ocssd.log file.

  • After checkpoint, I still see a log file over 10M. Is this normal?

I did "db_checkpoint -1; db_archive -d". After this, I still see a log file with 10M size. Is this normal? I can understand that we need to keep a log file. But the file size is so big. Maybe db will ignore those content in the log file?

The db_archive utility with -d option is going to remove any log files that are no longer needed at the time the command is executed. At least one log file remains at any time (that is, the one with the highest number).
The default log file size is 10 MB. If you want to change that, you'll have to configure [lg_max|http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/api_reference/C/envset_lg_max.html].

  • Find and sort all files in folder without invisible files

    Hi all,
I am trying to check whether the newest file added to a folder is an HTML file. In theory the folder should be empty when a new file is added because the script will delete all files in the folder just before it finishes running.
However, I am having a problem with .DS_Store files being created automatically in the folder. When Finder accesses the folder it creates a new .DS_Store file and thus the newest file added to the folder is never an HTML file.
I believe that the command "without invisibles" could help me with this problem. However, I have not been able to implement this successfully. I would appreciate if someone could please point me in the right direction. Here is what I have so far.
    tell application "Finder"
set sortedFiles to reverse of (sort (files of thisFolder) by modification date) as alias list
set newestFile to item 1 of sortedFiles
-- check if newestFile is an HTML file
-- read file and send contents to another application
    end tell
    Thanks for your help!

Errr...  A quick reality check is called for. If you make files visible to the finder then they are no longer invisible files, so ignoring invisible files won't help you one bit. your best bet is to do a manual check for a file that starts with a "." (which would normally be invisible):
    tell application "Finder"
set thisFolder to folder "Pictures" of home
set sortedFiles to (sort (files of thisFolder) by modification date) as alias list
set newestFile to last item of sortedFiles
if name of newestFile starts with "." then
set newestFile to item -2 of sortedFiles
              end if
    end tell

  • How do I find and delete invisible files?

Mac Hard Drive info window says 157.58 GB used and 159.56 GB capacity, leaving 1.99 available.
Total for all folders in Mac HD is 133.344 GB.
    14.13 GB  Library
    04.81 GB System
    114.4 GB Users
    16.58  GB Applications
.004   GB  User Guides and Info
I appear to missing about 20 GB storage that I desperately need.
    What is going on?
How do I clear out "invisible file" if that's what's taking up the 20 gigs?
How do I prevent this from happening again?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.
    I have a MBPRO 2.26 running OSX 10.6.8

Thanks so much  for your response.
Do you have any idea why there are 20 GB unaccounted for?
My hard drive seems to fill itself up continouously...I'd like to figure that one out.
Yes...Getting a larger HD is a great idea.
Does having a large HD impair performance?

  • How can I remove a doubly-invisible file?

My external drive has a 28GB invisible file on it called "Volume Catalog Info". The finder says the disk is full, but won't reveal the file, even with all files made visible.
The way I found the monster file was using DiskSurveyor 2.5 under Classic. I'd think it was imagining things, except that the Finder agrees that the disk is full. My 2 folders on the drive (no system files) add up to the same 28GB short of the size of the disk. I made all files visible using Terminal ("defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles 1") but besides the 2 folders mentined, there's nothing new shown of any size, only the following: Desktop DB 16KB, .DS_Store 8KB .TemporaryItems folder 8KB, Desktop DF 4KB, and .Spotlight-V100, .Trashes, Desktop, and Desktop Folder, all at Zero KB.
Since Terminal doesn't reveal the file either, how can I remove it?
    Thanks!

I appreciate the help and think this may have been a case of operator error. In searching the web I found someone with the same problem, but I now think I had the wrong idea of my actual disk size! So DiskSurveyor showed this mega-file, but just as a side-effect of its being an OS9 program. No mega-file, nothing to delete, red face.

  • External Drive with invisible files

I have a MAC OS Extended format hard drive that I am attempting to clean up to make room for transfering some data. I have removed all the visible folder and files, but both finder and Disk Utility show that there are over 173 GB of data (over 2 million files) still on the volume. The drive is a 500 GB LaCie that I partitioned into two equal parts of 250GB. The other Partition was used exclusively for TM Backups.  I want to reformat the drive ( the old back up partition I dont care about). but I am afraid of erasing files that I can't see.
Is there such a thing as an invisible file?
How can I find out what they are and why they are taking up so much of the drive?
I did run DU to Verify the volume and it checks out with no errors.
It is possible that they could be windows files that we used with Parallels at one time. But we no longer use Parallels. I would think that I would be able to see them even if I can't open the files.
I am running Lion on an iMac. The external drive is connected with firewire.

If you want a cleared (erased) unpartitioned 500 GB drive, then do this:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Yes, there are invisible files. The OS has thousands of them that are kept invisible to the user.

  • Just bought a new iMac and it is telling me it will take 27 hours to transfer documents from the old one!! Is this normal? Can I speed this up some how??

I just bought a new iMac and it says it will take 27 hours to transfer documents from the old mac! Is this normal? Can I speed this up??

If you are transferring with Wi-Fi or Ethernet and you have to transfer a lot of files, it's normal. Wi-Fi and Ethernet are the slowest methods to transfer files.
Instead, you can check if your old Mac has got a FireWire 800 port. If so, you can get a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter and a FireWire cable, so the transfer will be done by FireWire, making the migration faster.
If you don't want to spend money, continue the migration. Another thing you can do is to get an external drive, make a Time Machine backup of your old Mac and use the backup to transfer your files to the new Mac. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).
Once you are using the "Firefox" button ...
Use the "Alt" key to view the menu bar (temporarily) containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help. On Windows 7 and Vista, the menu bar was hidden by default in Firefox 4 and above. These menu items are more or less available under the "Firefox" button which has the most used of the built-in Firefox menu items available in a different format.
To get back to having menus again. "Firefox" button -> Options (second column) -> (check) Menu Bar
You can make '''Firefox 7.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. • External hard drives always spinning....is this normal?

I have a few external hard drives for my Mac Pro, a couple Weibetech 1TB drives, and a Drobo device that I just got to work as a backup. I just switched to this Mac Pro from a Macbook, and I am noticing my external drives are always spinning, and sometimes get pretty warm. Is this normal? The drobo's fan has been on all day, and I am not using it for anything. Is this normal?
Also, if the drives are not spun up, I notice that when I do certain things, my computer spins all my drives up, and wheel spins, even if what I am doing has nothing to do with that drive. I would think that the computer would wait until you tried to access the drive to spin it up.

I've seen the useless spinup of external drives accompanied by the spinning beachball too.
It usually happens when Finder or Spotlight are started/accessed/used. (for example, I press cmd+space to open spotlight, then I have to wait for my external drives to complete spinup before I can do anything... it just sits there, showing me a spinning beachball...)
I worked around this by telling Spotlight not to index my external drives, but now I can't use Spotlight for searching files on these drives...
Let's hope this is handled better in SL...
As to why they're sometimes on all day and sometimes not, no idea. Try the free application "What's Keeping Me?" to see if there is any process still attached to a file on that drive. Perhaps some process is keeping OSX from putting these drives to sleep...
