24GB flash Hard Drive Acceleration Cache

Getting ready to by an Envy TouchSmart 15t-j100 quad edition with the standard hard drive.  Is the acceleration cache a worthy add??  Also, there is a good chance I will pull the hard drive and replace with an SSD drive if i don't like the start up times.  Does it make sense to use the Acceleration cache with the SSD??
thanks

The acceleration cache cannot be used with an SSD. The Intel Rapid Storage Technology program will look for regular hard drives and mSSD drives and let you "accelerate" the regular hard drive with the mSSD. The mSSD cache drive will tremendously improve boot time, and provides some upgrade to overall storage performance. I have run full test on this with my Envy 17-j029nr having a 24 gig cache drive and 1 TB 5400 rpm drive, and hardware very similar to the laptop you are considering. With the cache drive enabled boot time goes from about 1:30 to about 25 seconds. The average data transfer speed goes from about 40 MB/s to about 70 MB/s. With a main SSD drive you can expect boot times of about 35 seconds and sustained data transfer speeds of more like 3-500 MB/s. If money is tight and you want to boost the speed on a bang for the buck basis get the mSSD cache drive. It is worthy. If you want to maximize the performance all the way, get an SSD.

Yes it does not mount as a lettered drive. It is combined with the main drive in a RAID array. Look in the list of programs and find Intel Rapid Storage Technology and open it up. If you have the 24 gig cache drive it will look something like this:
See the two drives listed in the upper right corner?

  • Why can't I use the 16GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm) with 24GB flash Hard Drive Acceleration Cache?

I tried to customize the Envy 15t but I can't proceed on upgrading the following.

24GB SSD Acceleration Cache requires purchase only up to 8GB System Memory.

Can HP explain this to me? or any one? please

    Hi,
The 24Gb cache drive will store manything and normally it will need at least twice the size (capacity) of RAM. Double 16Gb is 32Gb therefore 24Gb is not big enough.

  • Finder Errors After Flash/Hard Drive

Hi there, I have a MacBook Pro Retina 13" Late 2013 model and after upgrading it to Yosemite I have errors once connecting it to a hard drive or flash drive. After some research I found that it might be a problem with the NTFS format. I use both Mac and PC's so that's why I used that. Although, when I connect a flash drive it'll not show the folders visually in the finder. The files are still there and I can select them just by estimating where they are. After removing the hard drive, if I go into my own files onto my Mac such as Documents, if the folders and files do show up it'll have a black bar around the name and won't go back to normal unless I kill and restart Finder. Any help? Thanks for anything.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Brooks
If you can see the folder Lab2 is located in this folder on my hard drive

Can anyone help? My finder does the black bar thing occasionally and I can't access any of my hard drives.

  • Hard Drive question, Cache?!!

Hey people, my in depth knowledge of hard drives is probably on par with my knowledge of the mating habits of honey badgers.
My question to you is this - I'm in market for a 2nd internal H/D and wanna know whether the difference between a H/D with an 8mb cache and 16mb would make a huge difference? The 2nd internal is gonna be used to store my sample libraries (Logic Pro).
In fact if anyone can recommend a hard drive from a UK vendor/website, say around the 300 gig mark that'd also be fabutastic.
    Thanks.
Quad 2.66 Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi devlin,
The hatter provided you with good links. I could simply add that the difference between my Western Digital 250 GB/8MB cache internal HDD and my 500 GB 16 MB cache is speed and silence.
The 500 GB drive with 16 MB cache is twice as fast and more silent than the 250 GB drive. From what I guess is that higher your storage room, higher the cache would be which means more information stored per unit of time. I could be wrong and I am open to be corrected by anyone with more knowledge.
My 4th drive will most likely be another 500 GB or higher. I'm just waiting for prices to down a bit more.
    Good luck with your decision.
    Rio.

    Hi,
I am new to Coldfusion and am having trouble doing the

Basically you can't. This is because of security

  • HP ENVY initial RAID setup deleted, accidentally wiped hard drive?

I was trying to see if I could find an option to change my new laptop's SATA controller to AHCI, but I should've checked more thoroughly online before attempting anything new in the BIOS.  It seems that these laptops are automatically in AHCI?
My laptop had a 1TB SSHD and a 24GB flash Hard Drive Acceleration Cache configured in RAID 0.  With my minimal knowledge of RAID, IDE, and AHCI, I thought that removing the RAID configuration would give me an option to change the hard drive controller to AHCI.  Without thinking, I "deleted" the RAID volume, and I think I may have completely wiped my new hard drive and OS, including the recovery partition.
When I startup the laptop, I get the "boot device not found 3f0" error, and f11 does not work to try to go into the recovery mode.  The hard drive test still passes both items.  I've just now ordered USB recovery media from HP, but I'm not sure if there's anything else I can do?
I don't exactly know how the Hard Drive Acceleration Cache works, but my main question is why would a single SSHD be setup in RAID 0 from the factory, and if there's a good reason, how do I set it up again after reinstalling the OS from the USB media?
After screwing up my OS, I've played around in the BIOS to re-setup the RAID0, but I'm not sure I have it right.  I remember the strip size was set to 128kb, but I have no idea what the "Capacity(MB)" used to be or what I should set it to when I create the new RAID?
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

    Hi, Ryan:
Everything you read was correct about SSD's and TRIM only being supported for drives in AHCI mode until the advent of the Intel Series 7 Chipset.
Now, RAID mode is just as good for that purpose if your desktop or notebook PC has an Intel Series 7 or newer chipset and has the latest version of the Intel RST software.
TRIM was not working on your desktop PC until you changed the BIOS setting to AHCI.
The W8 product key is now encrypted in the BIOS in a further attempt by Micro$oft to combat software piracy, and the illegal use of OEM product keys on other PC's.
In the meantime, while you wait for your recovery disks to arrive, you can download this plain W8 x64 OEM ISO file and use that to reinstall W8 on your PC and you can experiment with configuring it to work properly.
This file will work with the product key in your BIOS.

  • Installing a second hard drive in a HP ENVY 15

I have just bought an HP ENVY 15t-j100. I opted to have an SSD instead of the 1TB drive. I was told that the original drive could be installed as a secondary drive but foolishly decided not to do that. Believe it or not I was concerned about the added weight! Hey, I'd just lost a Viao Z550, it weighed in at 3.2 pounds, and that included an optical drive! I had never actually seen an HP Envy, ordered it from overseas just going on the spec. Now that I have it I can see that worrying about the extra weight of the drive is like being concerned with the extra weight of a GPS unit in a Chevy Suburban. The power brick alone weighs about as much as the Z550!
So now I would like to add a secondary drive. I came across a tutorial for doing this in an Envy 17, would the 15 be much the same? Thanks for any enlightenment.

No the problem is not with the hardware...mSSDs are very fast and reliable. The problem is the design. The mSSD slot is supposed to be and is designed to be used only for a hard drive acceleration cache...usually 24 or 32 gigs. It allows the speed of an SSD to leverage the performance of the main regular hard drive. It is close to rocket science. It is technically possible to work around the way HP has set it up with limits in the BIOS and such but it is not really designed for that mSSD slot to be used to hold a storage sized drive to be used as an ordinary mounted volume or the main boot drive. Again, possible, but it takes a degree in computer engineering to accomplish.

  • Installing a 32gb mssd hard drive accelearation on HP Pavilion dv6-3127dx

Re:  HP Pavillion dv6 Notebook, #XG756UA#ABA, Windows 7
Hello, I have the above laptop, purchased on 12-2010.  Because I dropped it by mistake, it cracked the the left bottom shell and the screen hingue is lose so I have a white screen view now, but other than that the laptop works.  It does not warrant the expense to repair this issue,  so I have decided to buy a new laptop and keep this one as a desktop use.  I have it connected to an old CRT monitor right now and it working great and doing the job (I will eventually look into getting an HP monitor to have a more modern montior).  I am actually very happy that there is still life in this notebook, the view is much better on this old CRT monitor and other than the stupid mistake of actually throwing my book bag without realizing that the laptop was in it (a lape of memory), this laptop has been well cared for - only issue is that it gets very hot at times, not sure why since I do not really play games on it, but I understand this model has had this issue anyway.
To improve boosting I am wondering if I can install a 32gb mssd hard drive acceleration cache.  I want to know if this process is simple enough for me to do on my own.  Is this a card that I just buy and plug in a peripheral slot or is this something that has to go inside the laptop; where a technician has to do it?  Also, how about installing a better graphics card while I am at it?  It currently has an integrated.
Any help is appreciated, so thanks in advance.

Graphics on notebooks are typically soldered to the motherboard.  Notebooks, when it comes to critical components, are typically locked into that configuration.  Some components, like the processor, may be possible but it is not an easy task.
This guide by erico, one of the community experts, answers a lot of questions about upgrading the hardware in a notebook.  This may be worth reading if upgrading the hardware is something you are interested in.
Unlike desktops, notebooks aren't really designed to be upgraded.  This is largely due to how the notebook is designed with cooling in mind.  More powerful components will generate more heat and the initial cooling design (fans, heatsinks, and airflow) may not be adequate to handle the additional heat being generated.
It really sounds like this notebook doesn't quite meet what you are looking for.  The graphics card is something that is generally not upgradeable/addable and it does not appear this unit has the necessary architecture to support the cache drive option.  Just to add some clarity, the cache drive architecture typically relies on a RAID configuration to accomplish that task. Since the RAID driver (Intel RST) is missing from the download page, it appears this unit does not have RAID capabilities.
If boot speed is something you are looking for, upgrading the HDD as a whole to a standard SSD may be the best option for your needs.  However, looking  at a new notebook may be the best option if you also want improved hardware such as the graphics card.
This notebook comes stock with a 32GB mSSD cache drive.  It looks like the ultrabooks include a cache drive as I looked at four different ones and each had a cache drive included.  They didn't list it in the specs of the notebook, but it was listed when I selected the customize option.  However, the ultrabooks more than likely won't have the video card you are looking for due to the compact size the ultrabooks are designed for.  The Envy line typically has the most options for video cards.

  • Can the flash storage hard drives in the brand new 15inch Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops (10.22.13) be upgraded/replaced in the future?

Can the flash storage hard drives in the brand new Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops that were just released a few days ago (10.22.13) be upgraded/replaced in the future?  I will need more than the basic 256GB for sample libraries using music software, among other things, but currently larger flash drives from Apple are too expensive.  I ask because I'm in the process of buying one of the new 15inch Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops right now (or at least right after I get an answer to this question).
I saw in the Mac store when I started looking at the build options for ordering the Macbook Pro that under Memory it said the memory was built into the computer and therefore could not ever be replaced or upgraded in the future.  So I was wondering if something similiar might be the case with the flash storage drives even though the same wasn't written under the hard drive options?  If these flash drives can be replaced in the future then I would just purchase the starting 256GB drive and suffer through using connected external hard drives, as unwieldy as that would be, until there were potential replacement flash drives with larger storage capacties available on the market or through Apple for more reasonable prices.  But if the hard drives in these laptops can't be replaced/upgraded I would go for the 500GB drive option (even though paying an additional $300, before taxes, for just 244GBs more storage space is absolutely outrageous no matter how great flash drives are with their read/write speeds, no moving parts to break, and lighter weight/thinner builds allowing for an overall thinner laptop).  I would even go for the larger 1TB option, which is really what I need, except that costs an additional $700 which is more than enough to buy me a new 50inch, HD, flatscreen TV from a reputable brand if I were so inclined!  (And yes, I understand the youth of the technology, current limits to flash drive capacities, and the reason for the high prices.  I know I'm not getting bilked...)
So yeah, does anybody have an answer to this question?  Can the flash hard drives in the new Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops, just released, be upgraded/replaced in the future?  Any answers are greatly appreciated and will save me some much needed cash on my purchase of one of these laptops!  And I should also ask, if so, can they be replaced by the laptop owner with the normal toolset through the normal, easily done methods of hard drive replacement in laptops that has been common, or would I have to bring the laptop to a Apple technician?
    Thanks everybody!

The modules are proprietary. They are installed in a slot secured with a tiny screw.
macsales.com has been working on providing aftermarket modules for the older models that were on the SATA Bus.
These newer ones are likley directly on the PCIe Bus. That will take some time to develop.

  • How many hard drives should i get to get the most out of premiere on my laptop?

    Hello,
I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro Late 2013 with 512gb ssd, 16gb ram and 2gb 750m graphics card. I was wondering how many external hard drives i should get to get the best results in Premiere Pro and After Effects. I'm thinking about buying a smallish portable hard drive for cache and another for media. How many hard drives do you think i should get, what size they should be and how it would improve Premiere and After Effects please.
    Thanks Heaps

I agree with JFP...above.  But if you have a USB3 interface on that MacBook, you can also try using it as I have on my PC laptop
For simplicity on my PC laptop I would just go with a fast USB3 flash drive for the project and media files.  I have several PNY Turbo USB3 128GB units and have recently edited a 1-hour long three AVCHD camera shoot (not multicam mode) with perfect ease.  That way you do not have power cables from hard drives.  I suspect that the new SanDisk Extreme Pro will match those speeds below but at a much higher cost ($140 versus $50).  Never believe the manufacturers speed claims here are real achievable results on the PNY.
That read speed is better than most hard disk drives as it does not fall off as the storage device gets full, and the access time is significantly better despite significant USB overhead.

  • Why is my hard drive full?

I have a 500GB flash hard drive on my macbook pro and it is almost full.  When I look at the drive in the finder, though, I see that my personal user folder is taking up 460GB of that, but then when I expand it and add up the components they only add up to 260GB.  I can't figure out why.  My pictures file is 125GB and my music and desktop are 60GB each, and the rest are pretty small.  They don't add up to the 460GB that the overall user folder shows is in there.

If you have 10.7 or above, your Library folder is hidden. That usually takes up quite a bit of space - it contains all your Mail, caches, application files, and so on.
Either way, I would recommend running Omnidisksweeper. That usually gives a more accurate picture of your large files and folders.

  • MacPro - 750GB hard drives

anyone have anything to say about these 750GB hard drives?
they are pretty big, and i wonder how they are fairing in the a/v
world. i have a couple of MacPro's from last year and want to
fill up the storage bays. i'd like to get the 750's but..,
    let me know you're info!
oh, yeah, do you HD editors use the raid card and is it useful?
    -thanks

Western Digital drives seem to get better performance on a MacPro, check out the "Expanding your Mac Pro" forum. There are several Mac specific reviews of drives found there (I was a died in the wool Seagate guy, but then I read the reviews):
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1125
Here's something I posted here a few days ago:
If you are going RAID, you might look at the Western Digital RE2 drives, compared to Seagates here (there's a full review somewhere if you search storagereview)
http://www.storagereview.com/ST3750640NS.sr?page=0%2C1 (search in that site for more specifics by RE2)
The neat thing about them is that they will time out after 7 seconds for errors. Bad if using them as single drives, but great for RAID as I've had a lot of Seagate drives taken off-line by the RAID controllers when they took a very long time to respond (due to trying to correct errors).
You might also consider the 3Ware Sidecar:
    http://3ware.com/products/Extserialata2-9000.asp
They just had a price reduction to $895 list. A much larger company than probably any Mac controller company.
The neat thing about them is that you can add a BBU (battery backup unit) to the controller for about $100.
This can save you during a power supply failure or a Mac OS crash. It deals with the hard drive's cache memory journaling on a very low level (data isn't really written until its moved to the hard drive from the cache, so you have to worry about that).
I've been using them on the Windows platform for years with zero data loss. Great on the Mac, especially for video use where you need very high data rates.
