24p, FCP5, and my JVC SR-VS30U deck

I have been shooting in advanced 24p with my AG-DVX100A. Recently, I did a full studio upgrade, getting FCP Studio with FCP5, the new quad-core mac, and a JVC SR-VS30U mini-DV deck. More often than not, when I go to Log and Capture, FCP does not show that the deck is connected at all. When it does, it refuses to capture in advanced 24p, stating that there was a "cadence" error in the recording. However, when I capture directly from my camera, I do not have any issues. I got the deck to reduce the hours on my camera, and would prefer to work this way. Has anyone else experienced this issue or have any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your time and your help

glynn,
i have an older jvc br-dv600ua and it works great. i don't think it's on apples' list of supported devices either. you should probably experiment with the firewire control protocols to see which works best. also, my vtr does not read the pulldown flags imbedded in the data stream so i cannot capture using the 24p advanced preset. a call to jvc tech support several years ago afirmed this and there's no mod on the board level that i could do to allow the machine to read the pulldown flags.
i would either chuck your unit out the window and drive over it with a steamroller, sell it on ebay, return it and then bypass the dsr 11 (i know this machine has many, many supporters on this site but i don't like it) and get a real vtr. good machines are expensive but so is working in the glamourous world of video and tv production.

  • JVC SR-VS30U Deck Not Recognized

    Hi all,
Just bought a G-5 and I'm having a problem many seem to be having trying to have my JVC Deck (SR-VS30U) communicate with FCP. I'm trying to capture min-DV clips in FCP.
I've tried changing my AV settings to Non-controllable device and to Firewire NTSC Basic, to no avail.
I have set the deck on F-1 as suggested, but didn't make any difference.
I read and tried to follow several helpful posts including 'Bob Sidebotham - camera recognition' thread.
    System Config: OS X 10.4
FCP 5.01 (I also installed the entire Final Cut STudio disks)
    QT 7.0
I also plugged in a Lacie external drive, but took it off as soon as soon as I began having problems so as to not confuse the situation further.
No upgrades were installed aside from what came with FCP STudio.
I tried to wire in a Sony Camcorder just to see if the firewire connection was working at all and FCP did recognize it, although I wasn't able to capture anything with it.
I began to make the changes in the Capture Presets. When I clicked "Edit", i received the following message:
An error occurred whil configuring QuickTime using the current capture preset. Please quit Final Cut Pro and check your hardware configuration.
WHen I hit OK, i got:
    General Error (8)
I think I'll probably trash my preferences again, since I've made several changes to try to figure this all out.
Any other suggestions, particularly from people who are using this deck successfulyl would be much appreciated. Thanks.
    David

    Welcome D.,
I began to make the changes in the Capture Presets. When I clicked "Edit", i received the following message: An error occurred whil configuring QuickTime using the current capture preset. Please quit Final Cut Pro and check your hardware configuration. WHen I hit OK, i got: General Error (8)
The only thing I could find regarding a 'General Error (8), has to do with debugger/trace modes...?...? no idea what that means sorry.
Since you also get the message about capture preset/check hardware config...I have to wonder if there's something funky with the FW port, or possibly a hardware issue with the computer itself. Mac's (like any computer) can come out of the box with defects.
Do you have Apple Care Protection since this is a new purchase, and have you tried running any of this by Apple Support. Generally, I find much more concise info in this forum, but given the attempts you've made so far, it may be an option at this point. (I'd not go as far as to pay for phone support, but get as much info as possible.)
I've tried changing my AV settings to Non-controllable device and to Firewire NTSC Basic, to no avail.
Are these still the settings you have or have you gotten back away from 'non-controllable device'? (tried the 'DV NTSC' easy setup again?)
BTW, the A/V devices tab gives me only the option of Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Main or None so I set it as Digitial CInema... for both the playback output and the different output for edit to tape.
Pulled that from your other post, don't know why you're not getting a selection for anything other than Digital Cinema Desktop Preview.
Same with FireWire NTSC Basic, not sure if you've tried getting back to straight DV-NTSC 'easy setup'.
Unless it is a QT problem or hardware problem, these settings should make a difference, if they're not set that way currently.
Finally I'd consider posting back again with a detailed listing of all your settings..from the Audio/Video tabs (capture preset/Device Control Preset/A/V Device preset. Also confirm under the "VIEW" menu, what is listed towards the bottom for...External/Video Playback/Audio Playback.
Ultimately, if this is all a brand new computer and you've not even worked on it yet, I'd really consider a complete Erase and Install. check DKC reply to Jerry in this thread...

  • Fcp5 and jvc brhd50 deck

any ideas how to make a workflow with this???

it depends on what format you are trying to work with.
Remember, Final Cut 5 support HDV 720p30 - but does not natively support 24p or 60.
You might have to use hdvxdv to tranform it into useable format.
I've done it with a 24p interview and it worked great - but again - only on the JVC HD100, not the deck.

  • Jvc br-dv600u deck recognition with fcp5

hey - after a curious evening of searching i am hopeful this concerns is documented somewhere
i am attempting to log&capture with a newish jvc br-dv600u deck on fcp5 (from studio) and cannot seem to get fcp to recognize the deck
i am able to capture and control from fcp with a canon xl1s camcorder
i am able to view the tape if i play from the deck (but no timecode or controls work from the l&c window) it skips frames and displays interlacing
when i start up fcp and select log&capture window the display indicates that 'vtr ok', if i select play immediately the display changes to 'no communication'.
    System Config: OS X 10.4.3
    FCP 5.0.3 + dvdsp + strack + livetype
    QT 7.0
i've trashed my fcp preferences & rebooted
i've tried changing my AV settings to a non-controllable device and to Firewire NTSC Basic
this deck is not listed on the latest Final Cut Pro 5 Qualified Devices (very few are...)
    any help would be brilliant!

If this fails, might try adding a keyspan adapter so

    http://keyspan.com/products/usb/USA28x/ is the one

    thanks Jerry
i did attempt to find older versions of qt with no luck. looks like qt7 was installed with fc studio.
i had hoped to use this deck with the firewire/ieee1394 protocol. is this typical with older jvc decks & fcp? do you recommend the rs-232c interface workaround or would you find another deck that is compatible with firewire before committing to this one?
new details...i changed the firewire connection from a firewire 800card (since im using a powerbook with limited ports) and im able to see the timecode but still have no control of the deck from the fc.

  • FCP5 and 24p

    Hello,
I just got on board this project. I'm basically trying to make the process of editing it smoother than what it has been up tuntil now.
They shot in 24p. I don't know if it was advanced or standard. They are about to start editing with Final Cut Pro 5.
The output will be a 24p DV and maybe even film (as somebody is offering it for free -- of course no tests were run beforehand, they just forged ahead)
    Here are my questions:
    (A) - How do I find out what 24p they shot in? I read somewhere on this forum that one would need to take a look at the frame rate. But what's the difference between the frame rate of 24p advanced and 24p standard?
    (B) - Which setting should the editor use to capture the 24p Standard footage, considering that we are going for a 24p DVD output?
    (C) - Would the editor be right to use the "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal" setting to capture the 24p Advanced footage?
    (D) - What do people mean by "24p DVD" output? Is it simply to burn a 24 final cut on a DVD? Or does it require more work than that? (We have the DVD authoring software that comes with the Final Cut Studio package)
Thank you much for the help.
    Alex

What a goldmine this thread was to me this week! I had almost an identical situation arise. 24p 16:9 that the client wanted burned to DVD.
The media was on MiniDV 1hr26min. of footage. He also wanted to keep it at 23.98 for the DVD vs. 29.97
After careful reading of this thread and a couple of others to get some real-world working knowledge of 24p and the workflow, off to burn I went!
A couple of important things came to mind. Fisrt it was really a lifesaver to visit http://www.jkor.com/peter/24editing.html before starting.
By reading that site I found out that my MiniDV deck JVC BR-600UA would not allow you to use the Easy Setup for Advanced Pulldown. That was a touchy subject for me, because I had already commited to the job. A quick call to the client to ask about camera settings during the shoot eased my mind. He had not used Advanced Pulldown.
Now it was just a matter of capturing and running Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown. Well almost...
Since the project was ws on 2 tapes and had minimal editing, I simply made 2 captures. The issue was that Cap1, was 60min long and the file was to large for Cinema Tools to handle.
The shorter Cap2 was no problem. After breaking the first Cap into two smaller clips, it went like butter. Lesson learned:)
Next came Compressor for the MPEG files and finally DVDSP, in which I got another surprise. This project was going to require a Dual Layer disc.
Somehow I missed the part in the manual where it talks about establishing a break-point marker in your timeline. Lesson learned
Bottom line... Project is complete 2 days ahead of schedule and works perfectly.
Thank you to all who contribute here. The 1 hour of research saved me at least 3 days of headaches, and certainly would have created quite a different post here in this forum from me on this subject.

  • *FCP capture & compatibility problems with JVC BR-HD50 deck*

    Please help.
I’m looking for someone who has shot w/ JVC GY-HD200 cameras, using JVC Pro HD MINI dv tape stock and uses a JVC BR-HD50 deck and edits on the most recent (6.03 update) version of FCP. Or some amazing, savvy whiz that has solved this problem.
I now know that Apple does not support the JVC BR-HD50 deck. However, Apple does support the JVC GY-HD200 camera.
I have more than 100 plus-hours of footage (shot on JVC proHD mini dv w/ 2 JVC GY-HD200 cam) that is begging to be digitized. I’m not going to ruin my heads by digitizing all this footage from the camera.
I need a straight answer boys…All I need to know is what deck to use…
Can someone please tell me what deck is compatible, is supported by Apple AND is available?
As far as I know there isn’t any” JVC HD deck that’s “currently available” AND “supported” my Mac.” Yes, I’ve been the mac page - Spoke w/ B&H and other outlets and the JVC 6000u is no longer available.
I spoke with a very patient FCP tech-support fellow & he suggested the JVC CJ VHI…or another FCP tech recommended the “no longer available 6000. These don’t work.
The bottom line is that my new deck doesn’t fully communicate w/ FCP. (TC issues) Having consulted many savvy FCP editors, IT pros specializing in video & mac, a smart & determined video guy from “B&H,” as well as the fine gentleman at Apple (never spoke to a woman) who are apparently FCP whizzes—I’ve gotten a lot of, “try this,” or “apple doesn’t support the br-hd50 deck or “it looks like your (brand new, custom loaded tower) doesn’t recognize any component that uses fire wire – you need to take it to an apple store.” Which was not true. My fire wire ports work just fine.
Perhaps Brandon or Jeff (the fantastic mac FCP support) or a few of the folks from JVC could chime in…Kunihiko Sato-san or anyone who is innovative, smart or perhaps wears a black turtleneck. Please only respond with proven results not theories… and “yes” I tried to load video without the latest FCP update, changed cables & tried all the troubleshooting techniques from the Apple FCP support staff. In addition, I “updated “my brand new” JVC deck - Hiromi Minakawa-san?
I’d greatly appreciate some help with this. I’m not a FCP, Mac or super-tech guru. Thank you!

Can you tell us exactly what the problem is? Is the computer not recognising the deck at all or is it importing broken clips with huge gaps? (the usual problem).
If you are using FCP 6 try bringing the footage in as ProRes. This usually brings in the footage with only a small number of frames missing from the beginning of each shot.
This camera is at it's best if you use the DR HD100 onboard hard drive, save yourself hours of digitising and keep the original tapes as archive / backup and no quality loss (or missing frames for that matter). I have clients who post produce themselves who use this camera purely for this feature.

  • Does FCP support the JVC SR-DVM700 deck yet?

I know there have been past complaints by people who have not had any luck getting FCP to recognize the JVC SR-DVM700 deck. I am in the same boat. Does anybody know if this situation is any better?

I'm having a similar issue with the JVC SR-DVM700U deck. I tried with the same resolve. I also tried the capture now feature while playing the tape, but as I stopped the capture it came up with an error saying unrecognizable video or file type. I have also clip and batch captured only for it to return a no video error as well. I can only assume maybe the HDD might be slowing the deck down some how, even though it is not on. It works fine with my PC and matrox/Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 . I alsotried messing with firewire/ firewire basic settings in Final Cut as well as dropframe and non. I hope I can some how use this deck with the this new MAC and Final Cut. Thanks for any help.

  • 24P Playback and Project settings

I'm a Final Cut guy switching to Premiere Pro CS5.5  and have legacy files to edit.  I"m trying to figure out the best project settings (Mac Based)
Bringing in Pro Res files 1920 x 1080, 24p.  I have a Black Magic Decklink Studio with most current drivers.
I don't seem to see a project setting that allows me to run my video out to an external monitor on a 24p sequence.  Now in Final Cut I can edit the 24p files on a 24p timeline and still playout thru the BMD card.  I guess it does the pulldown.  I assumed it would in PPro as well?
I can setup a project in CS5.5 at 29.97 but then my sequences need to be rendered.
I must be missing something but can't seen to get the right settings... Help!
    thanks
    Ben Kupfer

Drop a clip onto the "new item" icon at the bottom of the project panel an Premiere will make the appropriate timeline for you.
Use playback setting to pick your external monitor and you should be set.

  • Hey, I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera, whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there, please help !

    Hey,
I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and a JVC everio camera.
Whenever i try to import my files to FCE via "Log and transfer", it just doesn't do anything, as if FCE doesn't know the camera is there,
    please help !

FCE 4.0.1 can only capture DV/HDV which is produced by cameras using Mini-DV TAPES and cameras shooting AVCHD which is a high definition format.
If your camera shoots standard definition on Memory Cards, DVDs or Hard Drives it will not work in FCE.
What is your camera's exact model name and number?

  • Using 24p footage and 60i footage together?

    Hello,
I am working on a project that will combine 24p footage and 60i footage. What would be the best way to go about combining these two. It's for a short that is shot similar to Cloverfield. I want to use 60i footage for the hand held footage shoot by the actors who are capturing their experience. I'd prefer to have that footage shot on 24p as well and degrade the quality in post, but I don't want to run the risk of them dropping my DVX100a and destroying it. I don't have any experience with 60i, or combining two kinds of footage, so advice is much appreciated!
    Thanks!

    > that they are not true 30p but really 60i rendered to 30p
Well, I certainly can't speak for all of these cameras, but I have played around with some of this "30p over 60i" footage -- but most of this was from HDV cameras, not AVCHD. Avoid if you can. Basically, the luma is progressive and the chroma is interlaced.
I have a function (it's actually part of the dv2film and hd2sd functions) that will deinterlace only the chroma, so can recover greatly true progressive output... but this is an unmitigated a pain in the *** to deal with all the time, and you certainly lose at least a little chroma resolution. Avoid :)

  • HVX 24p timeline and 60p

Simply, I'm editing a documentary and we're shooting in 720p 24PN with the HVX. I setup my timeline accordingly, and despite my coaching them, the two guys who hired me still come back with 720 60p footage from time to time.
By default, when I drop the 60p footage into the timeline, it's black. When rendered, it's choppy.
I know there is an calculative explanation for this but the numbers are confusing me - I'm looking for the best way to take that 60p footage into the 24p timeline and have it play at normal speed.
Also, an aside that I thought of. When I'm ready to actually use 720 60p for slow motion, how do I achieve this in a 24p timeline? I've found a few explanations after a brief search and apologize if it should have been more apparent to me, but I'm still not quite grasping it.
This is my first foray into P2 and MXF. I am using Raylight from DVFilm as well, so my clips are referenced as you may know, and not imported traditionally through final cut.
    Thank you!

It will look a little choppy...in comparison to the actual 24p footage. You can try the Standards Converter from www.nattress.com and see if that does a better job. Demo is available.
As for the Slow Motion, you need to use the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter tool in the TOOLS menu. HOWEVER, you need to have actual quicktime files I think...not sure if this will work with Raylight. You can try. I do know that the end result will be a quictime file.

  • FCP5 and JVC GY-HD100 Problem.

Hello. it´s my first post were.
i´m in portugal, and i use PAL system, so, how can i work with JVC GY-HD100, if my FCP5 just work with 720,30p?
    Can someone tell me?
    sorry for my bad english.
    thank you.

    Welcome Nuno,
In the Menu bar, click on Final Cut Pro and select Easy Setup. You should see a bunch of sequence setting selections. Choose the one that matches your shooting format/capture settings.
You can modify these if necessary, but may want to start with a basic one first.

  • Anybody have the JVC SR-VS30U Mini-DV/SVHS deck?

I can get data from tapes to Final Cut via the firewire connection, but how do I go the other way? How can I play the timeline and have it record onto mini-dv or SVHS vis the firewire? There must be a setting on the deck I'm not seeing? Thanks!
    (I dont have a manual)

    Shut everything down
As suggested, run your FW cable from the puter to the front of the deck.
Turn the deck on. Make sure the DV button is lighted. Use the remote control to select Input F-1 (its the Channel + key)
Fire up the Mac and launch FCE. Make sure you have View>Video Out>Apple Firewire (NTSC or PAL) device set.
That should give you output from the Viewer or Timeline into the deck. When using the DV deck you should be able to play/record or use the Print to Tape function
If you want to play/record to the S-VHS side: On the deck, make sure Dub is selected for DV ... with the arrow pointing towards the VHS side. Now you should be able to play from the Timeline and Rec on the VHS side

  • FCP5 and Kona 3 Card

I am working on a FCP5 system with a Kona 3 card installed. The company has used this card for some time with great success for SD projects. They are making the tranfer to HD projects. They are shooting HDCAM. I have been able to get the video signal from the deck to FCP - but have not been able to get audio to FCP.
I hooked up the deck SDI. This is how the video signal is coming in. But no audio. They have the speaker routed through a mixer connected to the card. One I plugged in the the Kona AES cables I was able to get audio to the speakers but no audio signal to FCP!
Any ideas?!! Has anyone had this problem or heard of any type of solutions? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

    Kona 3   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Kona recommends using a Fibre Channel or SCSI external RAID for uncompressed HD, but the price for both of those is high. The eSata works and is much more cost effective. The best reason to go Fibre would be if you were using multiple editing stations at one location and wanted each to share the same storage thru a Fibre network.
As far as drive performance, in the eSata world, 8 striped 250 or 500s at 7200 RPM is the lowest recommended. 6 striped may work for 8 bit, but I have never tried.
    I found this list:
Storage and data rates for uncompressed video are listed below.
    525 NTSC uncompressed;
    8 bit @ 720 x 486 @ 29.97fps = 20 MB per/sec, or 70 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 720 x 486 @ 29.97fps = 27 MB per/sec, or 94 GB per/hr.
    625 PAL uncompressed;
    8 bit @ 720 x 576 @ 25fps = 20 MB per/sec, or 70 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 720 x 576 @ 25fps = 26 MB per/sec, or 93 GB per/hr.
    720p HDTV uncompressed;
    8 bit @ 1280 x 720 @ 59.94field = 105 MB per/sec, or 370 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 1280 x 720 @ 59.94field = 140 MB per/sec, or 494 GB per/hr.
    1080i and 1080p HDTV uncompressed;
    8 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 24fps = 95 MB per/sec, or 334 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 24fps = 127 MB per/sec, or 445 GB per/hr.
    8 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 25fps = 99 MB per/sec, or 348 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 25fps = 132 MB per/sec, or 463 GB per/hr.
    8 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97fps = 119 MB per/sec, or 417 GB per/hr.
    10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97fps = 158 MB per/sec, or 556 GB per/hr.
    1080i and 1080p HDTV RGB (4:4:4) uncompressed;

I've been using my JVC MiniDV(and S-VHS combo) deck to digitally ingest footage via the Capture window on CS4 (originally on Prem Pro 1.5).. but the 'transport' controls (the virtual ones) are no longer enabled.  'Tho it's connected via Firewire to the computer and is definitely being 'seen' by the whole set-up... I cannot stop, start, pause, record etc as I used to be able to by using the virtual transport controls.
I'm having to take the haphazard route of ingesting footage via the RCAs out the back of the unit via a Canopus/Grass Valley i/o box - I've set the 'device control' options (in the capture window) to DV/HDV Device Control.... and the 'Capture Settings' are set to DV... the 'current device' is stating JVC Standard (as it should) so I don't know why I'm not getting the functionality I should have.
