24p to a 30 fps sequence conversion

24P to 1080i/30fps
Hello everyone. I am trying to combine footage shot on the SDX 900 at 24p with footage shot on the HPX 500 at 1080i/30fps
My sequence is 30 fps.
The 24p looks jerky & I am not sure what to do.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Regards
Bonnie

So you are mixing SD and HD in the same sequence.
The SDX 900 shot at 24P actually prints to tape at 29.97 inserting a 2:3 pulldown for a "Film Look"
Depending on how it was captured it is natively 720x480 interlaced at 29.97 and will have a judder to the footage due to shooting format. The HPX shot at 1080i30 will be native 1080 x 1440 at 29.97 fps with no pulldown.
If you have access to a Kona capable of upconversion or MatroxMXO2 you can upconvert the SDX footage to 1080 on input and maintain a DVCProHD1080i 29.97 codec. It upconverts quite nicely however it will still have a 2:3 puldown. If you don't have access to a capture card upconvert you could drop in your selects from the SD footage into compressor and convert via software to dvcProHD 1080i with a 29.97 timebase

  • Sound import to 25 fps sequence is always out of sync and need rendering!!!

Anyone know why an aif sound file from Pro Tools imported to 25 fps sequence is always out of sync and needs rendering? It is like FCP is converting it to another freq. when it is 48k already! I do this all the time with NTSC and 23.98 projects, what is up with the 25 frame seq.??
    Thanks, Mark

If the originals are coming from CD's they are 44,100 kHz.
Resample in Soundtrack Pro or convert in QuickTime Player.
Your location says you are in LA. Why are you working in in PAL?
I know that things need to be at 48K this would not matter anyway if it was 44.1 FCP would do the conversion and not make it out of sync in an NTSC Timeline, but a PAL timeline FCP screws with the sound file. The files came from pro Tools, the industry standard should mixing.
I put them through Sound Track Pro and it did not help.

  • Sequence conversion

    Hello:
I am trying to convert a LabWindows/CVI sequence file to TestStand but
I get warnings/errors when opening or running the sequence in TestStand.

    Steve,
Your object files probably depend on other object files or support libraries
that haven't been loaded. When you ran from the test executive, you included
them in the CVI project so they were preloaded.
TestStand is a little different because it isn't a CVI project that you build
into an application. Instead, you need to configure the CVI adapter to pre-load
your support libraries. Select Configure>>Adapters. Select the CVI Std
Prototype Adapter and click Configure. In the CVI Std Adapter Configuration
dialog, press the Configure Auto-Loading of Support Libraries Needed for
linking Objs and Libs. Add all your support libraries to this dialog. TestStand
will copy your files to the TEstStand\AdapterSupport\CVI\AutoLoadLIbs directory
    where they can be preloaded.
It is often tricky to figure out which support libraries you need. For this
reason, NI and Microsoft encourage people to use DLLs instead. DLLs can
be loaded dynamically, and by default, the OS loads them for you. Usually,
you just leave DLLs in the same directory as the executable or the WIndows\System32
    (\System for Win95/98).
Let us know if this doesn't work out.

  • 30 fps shot into 24 fps sequence w/out frame removal

I want to cut a 30 fps shot into my 24 fps sequence, but I don't want to lose any frames. Instead, I'm prepared to have the shot play at 80% speed (24/30 = .8). But I can't figure out how to do this. If I simply cut the shot into the sequence frames get lost. How would I go about this?
    Thanks, Martin

Well, that is a viable option for DVCPRO HD footage that is 59.94 that you want to convert to 23.98 slow motion. It transfers frame for frame and slows it down. But, because of the results you got, I think that might be behavior limited to DVCPRO HD.
Then I don't know what you can use. After Effects perhaps?

  • HD movie files need constant RENDERING in FCP 24p HD 1440 x 1080 sequence.

    Hi,
I have been editing a feature film which which uses a FCP 24p HD 1440 x 1080 timeline (sequence, or many different sequences actually). The movie was filmed exclusively on a Canon HV40 camera using, of course, 24p HD footage, widescreen. However, I am now adding footage shot on a small Canon Powershot digital camera which also can shoot decent HD video (.mov files likewise, but not in 24p). When I put this HD video into my timeline, a red render bar appears above the footage, and apparently I have to render the footage before being able to view any of it in "Safe RT" mode. When in "Unlimited RT" mode, an orange bar appears above the footage, and it "plays", but the footage plays very unsteady, stopping and starting, making it nearly impossible to edit fast & intuitively because the eyes/mind don't see the full clips in all their natural wonder/splendor. One just sees images that skip and fumble by, along with their sounds, and it's somewhat headache-inducing. Is there any cure for this? I have lots & lots of Powershot footage to edit into this film, but at this rate it will really slow down the natural flow of editing if i can see the footage as nature or god or Buddha or humans intended it to be viewed.'
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Marc

    David,
It might seem simple and obvious from your end, but these issues are pretty spanking new to me - despite editing for years in FCP they've just never come up. I'm a simple aim & shoot, edit & print sorta guy. So, I don't know, for instance, how to convert the 940 footage to to my Canon HV40 footage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did run a sample of mixed clips through through compressor, and there does seem to be some degrading of quality on the 940 footage, tho' I'll accept/use it like that if I have to. Luckily all the 940 footage appears in the film as flashbacks of sort from the main character, so the degrading element of the 940 footage might have a redeeming stylistic affect - MAYBE. But I'd rather keep it as pure of footage as I possibly can muster.
    Thanks much,
    Marc

  • How can I convert my 25 fps sequence to 23.98 sequence

Believe it or not I've been editing footage shot at 23.98 into a 25 frame rate sequence.  Please don't ask how.
The graphics company is creating their stuff at 23.98 (understandably.)
Now I would like to convert my sequence to 23.98 so that there are no more problems down the road.
I've tried copying from the 25 sequence into a 23.98 sequence, but all the cuts end of screwed up and way off from what I edited.
    Help?

    Thanks Shane,
So here is the sad story.  There was never a red render bar, everything was green and editing like a charm.  Also, the first thing copied into the sequence was a title at 25 fps. So I was not alerted to the issue of the sequence not matching the video.  Then when subsequent sequences were made it just kept going and going until we got a call from the graphics company.  Doh!  Luckily we were only 13 minutes in.

  • Script to sequence conversion

    Hi,
I would like to know if it would be possible to convert a text based test script to a TestStand sequence? The conversion program would be developen with LabVIEW.
The test script would have a syntax similar to Perl. We would like to be able to declare variables, include for, if-then-else and while statements.
For example a non TestStand programmer could write this script:
    $count = 10;
    $instrumentAnswer
    instrumentAnswer = ReadInstrument(0,1)
    while ($instrumentAnswer >= 0 and count >= 0) {
    WriteInstrument(0,1)
    instrumentAnswer = ReadInstrument(0,1)
    WriteInstrument(2,10)
    instrumentAnswer = ReadInstrument(6,0)
    $count--;
Do you think it is possible and do you have any hints on how to do this?
    Thanks!
    -M

    Hi M,
It sounds like the hint that you're looking for is most likely a Sequence File Translator. This tool allows you to load sequence files with your own custom file formats. There's a good 16 pages of information about how to implement these that can be found in Chapter 15 of the TestStand Reference Manual. You can find this manual by going to: Start»Programs»National Instruments»TestStand 4.0»Online Help»Manuals»TestStand Reference Manual.
Here's also another long thread on this issue that you might find useful:

  • Please Fix FPS sequence bug in Premiere !

every time you move a folder with a project or for example you copy a project into a hard drive to work in another computer all image sequence FPS changes to original frame rate instead what FPS you choose to assume.
    To replicate the error:
    in a mac OSX
in finder prepare a folder with an image sequence
    1) create a project, with a PAL Timeline,
    2) insert a image sequence, modify the intepretation FPS to "assume this frame rate" change it to 25 or something different from the original FPS
    3) drag and drop the sequence into the timeline
    4) save and quit
    5) Copy the folder containing the project and the sequence to an external hard drive
    6) open the project in another computer.
you will notice that the FPS interpretation has changed to the "use frame rate from file" instead the "assume this frame rate" option
this is easy to fix when it's only one clip, but when you are doing huge edits with some differents Frame rates on same timeline, (especially intrepreting 60fps to 30fps) it's a really painful bug

    Hi Mariano,
I know this is fixed in Premiere Pro CC 7.2.1 for standard video clips. However, I'm not sure how it affects image sequences. Please file a bug. In the mean time, you could have this option if you convert your image sequences to video files.

  • Outputting a 24 fps sequence at 25fps ? (pal video)

Hello everybody. I'm trying to output a short length movie I edited at 25fps. The film was shot at 24fps, telecine at 25fps, sound synced in FCP 4.5. I conformed the clips at 24fps to edit the film at the right speed. Now I want to output the film on a videotape at 25fps for the negative cutter (so that he'll have a visual reference with the one-to-one relationship between film and video frames). I guess this is not possible but maybe someone had to deal with this question before ?
    Thanks
    Rodolphe

Can't you just output the sequence you had before
    converting the clips to 24?
    Patrick
Hi. Actually I don't have any sequence before converting to 24fps, I edited with those clips already converted. I guess there's no solution for this question
    Thanks anyway.

  • Putting 30 fps clip in a 24 fps sequence

I want to drop in some iPad footage to add to a sequence that is all Canon 5D 24fps footage.
The iPad footage is playing slightly choppy. I assume it records in 30fps so the frame rate is off the rest of the footage and the sequence. Everytime I move that footage I have to render too. I'm pretty much locked on picture now though. Shoud I just continue with it like that and it will work it out on the output or would it be better to pre-compress the iPad footage before I put it in the timeline to match the frame rate of the rest of the footage?

  • Converting 24p to NTSC 30 fps with existing footage already captured

Working on a project that should have come to me downconverted to NTSC 30fps. I already have footage that was shot DVCPro 24p and have started working (selecting) with the footage. We would like to shoot our remaining footage downconverted in-camera to NTSC 30fps.
So - I'm curious if FCP allows you to convert material that's already been captured.
    Thanks

You'd need to use the Standards Converter from www.nattress.com.
$100 but worth it. It also converters 30 to 24, and PAL to NTSC, and vise versa.

  • TIP: 24p ntsc to PAL conversion

Many thanks to Graeme Nattress for this solution.
Our project was a 90-minute doc edited in 24p ntsc. We needed to create a PAL version by transcoding in software. If we simply placed the ntsc version in a PAL sequence, the frame rate change resulted in blurry motion and repeated frames, giving the motion a jerky look.
I had been trying to use the Nattress standards conversion plugins with no success. However, Graeme was kind enough to recommend the following workflow:
    1. Create a reference movie of the original sellf-contained movie of the ntsc version
    2. Conform the 24p clip to 25 fps in Cinema Tools. This took about 1 second. The resulting clip was 4% shorter (about 4 minutes) and the audio was automatically speeded up to match.
    3. I now placed the 25 fps ntsc clip into a PAL sequence and scaled it up to 120% to fill the PAL frame. I exported my mpeg for DVD using compressor, which took only about 6 hours to encode on a dual 1.8 G5, a perfectly acceptable ratio of about 4:1. The result was that all of our original 24P frames were intact, with no conversion, interpolation, extra frames, blurring, etc. The quality was much better than any other workflow I had tested, and it saved us lots of rendering and exporting time.
    Thanks again Graeme!
    Max Average

Yes, definitely the way to do it.
Even in the NTSC world, low-budget filmmakers have been doing the reverse for years - shooting PAL because of the ease of conversion from 25fps video to a 24fps film print - a 4% slow-down in this case. The extra 96 lines of vertical resolution is especially beneficial in this workflow too!
Good to see you NTSC guys more with PAL!

  • Custom Timebase in sequence settings for 15 fps animation

I have an stop-motion project, where we are capturing images to playback at 15 frames per second. I have set up FCP to do this in the past, but I cannot find where the preference is. I thought you could just set your sequence settings to use a 15 fps timebase, but all of the options are from 24p to 60. I have an older project file that has the 15 fps timebase, so i could just copy that sequence, but am I missing the obvious preference option to make a 15 fps sequence, or did they take that option away between fcp 3 and 4.5?

I was thinking about working at 30 fps, and setting the image sequences to use a two second rather than one second duration to simulate the 15 fps playback rate of the movie, but the problem is that the cut made in fcp is only an offline edit, made using lo-quality quicktimes that have to be replaced with the original image sequences for the final export.
Its not to big of an adjustment to do this, but I don't see why I have to now, and didn't need to before, especially since I will double my file sizes.

  • 24 fps in a 29.97 sequence

    Hi everyone,
I've got a frame rate problem...
I recorded my film on advanced 24 fps and inputed it into final cut pro 5 with the pulldown. Final cut recognizes that my footage is 23.98 fps in clip settings but I've accidentally edited my entire film in a 29.97 sequence! I try to copy my folder into a 24 fps sequence but all my fades and slow motion effects are gone. The film does not look how it's supposed to. Is my 29.97 sequence playing at 30 or 24 fps? Can I simply output my 29.97 sequence at 24 fps? Help! What do I do now?
