250 Gb drive is being halved?

I went through the whole ide1,2,3 backwards numbering raid drivering thing.
I ended up with the HD (Maxtor 7Y250P0, 250Gb ide) and the CD (well, DVD) on the same cable to the blue motherboard connector (IDE3). Everything is working except that Windows XP Pro calls the available space 131072 (or close to that).
hmmm... That is about half of what I expect. Is there a jumper or bios setting that I am missing?

Hi Wonk...
So I have updated XP to SP2...
I didn't go back and try and partition up the second part.
I have been having too much fun loading all the other apps I need.
I'll take a look at it tonight.

  • External hard drives not being recognized by Lr4

When I hooked up my two external hard drives to my computer this week, Lr4 is not recognizing them. Each folder has a question mark by it.
    Appreciate any help..thanks!

    Hi Jim,
I spent some time doing maintenance on Lil's computer.  We were on public networks for 10 days and so I ran some cleanup software to help ensure that we don't have some virus or other malware messing things up.
Then I did some comparing and it appears that Lightroom has the G and H drives reversed.
I have enclosed 4 screen shots.  Two show the strong(but not perfect) correlation between LR drive G and Explorer drive H........and vice versa.  Another shows the K drive and the fourth shows the G drive one level up as you requested.  I believe that when we disconnected this computer to take on vacation that we just pulled all the plugs and did NOT take any steps to "logically" disconnect them.  If LR is sensitive to drives just being removed by pulling the cable, then perhaps that contributed to this situation...although I believe that we used the same procedure in the past.
    Thanks,
    David Polley

  • Incredible slowness with LaCie 250 usb drive when trying to delete files

I connected a LaCie d2 250 gigabyte drive to the usb port of the new Airport Extreme. When I try to delete a folder containing a a fairly large amount of data (40,000 files) it took approximately 30 minutes to tally the number of files and then another 20-40 minutes or so to actually delete the files (put them in the trash). I am wondering if the slow performance is normal? I previously used this drive with a direct connection to my MacBook Pro with the firewire cable. Another thing that is curious is that the folder I was deleting was a backup of my old 'Applications' folder (which does not appear to contain many files - maybe 100 icons at the most). Could the usb cable be the culprit (perhaps is only designed for USB 1.1)? It appears quite a few other people are having some similar issues with drives connected to the usb port. Any other ideas? Thanks.
MacBook Pro 2.33 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Airport Extreme, Airport Express

I have ruled out the cable as the problem. I attempted to delete another folder and it took well over 1 hour to tally the files so I gave up and clicked the cancel button to cancel the process. As an experiment I used the same usb cable to directly connect to the MacBook Pro and the folder was deleted in less than 30 seconds. There is definitely some issues with the USB port. Hopefully Apple can resolve this with a firmware or software update.

  • LaCie d2 500GB Quadra Hard Drive Not Being Seen By Time Machine

    Hello all,
I have a LaCie d2 500GB Quadra Hard Drive Not being seen by Time Machine hooked up to my iMac via firewire 800. My iMac is running latest updates etc. Have raised a support ticket and was given the following instructions by LaCie:
    Posted: 08 November 2007 @ 00:00
Thank you for contacting LaCie Technical Support. Make sure the drive is mounting and you can assess files on it on your 10.5 system. If you can then you will need to reformat the drive to make it compatible with time machine.
Warning! All data on the external drive will be destroyed in this process.
Step 1: Run Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Step 2: Click on the LaCie hard drive's 'physical' entry, usually the third entry in the list
Step 3: Click on the Partition tab
Step 4: Change 'Current Scheme' to '1 Partition'
Step 5: Change the name of the drive back to what you would like it to be
Step 6: The format needs to be Mac OS Extended, with or without journaling
Step 7: Click on the Options... button
Use "Apple Partition Map" partition scheme on a PowerPC-based Mac.
Use "GUID" partition scheme on an Intel-based Mac.
    Step 8: Click on OK
    Step 9: Click on Apply
Step 10: click on Erase at the bottom of the screen, then confirm the erase.
The drive should start to be reformatted which should take only a few seconds and show up on the desktop with a new icon. Once it has you can then use it with time machine.
I have done all of the above and it is still not being seen. Anyone had a similar issue or got the above to actually work?
    Thanks in advance!!!!

    Ryan,
Check drive volume name and also the Computer name. Apple released a tech note recommending that both be limited to only the characters A-Za-z0-9 (no dashes, hyphens, or other special characters.
If you can, send the Apple System Profiler report to me at the addres in my profile. Imay be able to see something there. I have helped another user with similar problems, but with a LaCie USB drive. He got things working by repeating the recommended steps, and double checking everything.
As others have rported, this should work, so there may be something else preventing proper operation.
If the drive is usable from Finder, but Time Machine cannot use it, there is something related in how Time Machine is viewing the drive.

Trouble with slow Macbook Air. I have first generation MacBook Air and have a hard time keeping hard drive from being full. After trashing many docs, I have almost 5 gigs available, but mac is slow and I keep getting color wheel when I use Mail. I'd like to install Lion, but now I'm afraid it will slow down my machine even further. Do I have enough free hard disc space? Is Mail problem related to free hard disc space? Thanks for your help!

7gb of free disc space is required to install Lion.  Read this about how to free up disc space: http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html.  Also, advice on how to speed up your mac: http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/25_ways_speed_your_mac

Some, possibly, but shouldn't be a problem.
how can i get rid of all "other" memory
Much of it is OSX and other things needed to run your Mac.
See The Storage Display for an explanation, and don't miss the link to Where did my Disk Space go?

  • 250 GIG drive formats to only 233 GIGs. Is this normal?

    Hello,
I have read that when you format a drive the file system takes some of the space on this disk. I just formatted a new 250 Hitachi T7K250 SATA drive and it formats to 232.67 GIGs. Does this sound right? I thought it might result in about 240 GIGs but it seems to me I am loosing some disk space somewhere. Or is this normal? I thought I would write this post just to confirm that this is normal hard drive formatting behaviour.
I formatted the disk with Tiger's Disk Utility and I chose the "write zeros" option.
I have also read that there may appear to be lost space on the drive due to the various ways Gigabytes are measured.
Is 233 Gigs a normal formatted amount for a 250 Gig drive?
    Thanks.

Not exactly. Can you express it in powers of 1024?
Yes. Inherently, however, it's all powers of 2.
That's right but you are not using the the powers 2^x, (x not equal
10,20,30,...), so effectively you are using base 1024.
    2^10 equals 1024^1, which is 1 kilobyte.
    2^20 equals 1024^2, which is 1 megabyte.
    2^30 equals 1024^3, which is 1 gigabyte.
Exactly and only powers of 1024 have a name. So when it comes to drive sizes only powers of 1024 are relevent.
    So actually you are using
    1024^1 = 2^10 (kilo)
    1024^2 = 2^20 (mega)
    1024^3 = 2^30 (giga)
So, drive sizes are specified as powers of 2, which
can also be expressed as powers of 1024 (but computer
scientists never talk about powers of 1024, they talk
    about powers of 2).
Yes but sometimes if makes sense to talk in powers of 16 (hexadecimal) and
powers of 1024. It used mainly because it can be expressed as a power of two, but still the base remains 16 or 1024.

  • How to keep an internal drive from being mounted on startup?

Other than opening the box and disconnecting them physically, how do I keep an internal drive from being mounted at startup? I have two problems:
    1) despite having an SSD drive marked as the startup drive, I think one of my other drives is being considered first - startup takes a long time and it shows the gray circle with a line through it, before acquiescing into booting (rapidly and nicely) from the SSD drive. How do I make it ignore the other drives and go right for this?
    2) when the system boots up, if I don't immediately dismount the internal drives (which I don't need most of the time), Time Machine and Spotlight begin going over them.
other than physically removing them, anything I can do in some OS X boot script to keep those drives from being mounted?

Ok, I followed your directions (including de-seleccting and re-selecting the SSD as boot disk from System Preferences). Console: there was nothing under System Diagnostic Reports, but here's what the All Messages logs said after the Boot_Time that demonstrated my issue (3 min wait, then gray circle with a line through it, then finally rapid boot off the SSD). Is there anything here that shows what the heck it's doing before it actually boots off the SSD?

  • Which driver is being used

We had an issues whereby a new PC would not connect to our 64bit boot.wim to run a task sequence so we need to import a number of drivers into the boot image.  The PC is now connecting.  How can I find out which driver is being used on the boot
image as I would like to remove the others which are not being used, is there a log file or would it be a process of elimination
    Wayne

You can also review the logs in WinPE including setupapi.dev.log and wpeinit.log.
Also, when you say "we need to import a number of drivers into the boot image", I hope you are just talking about NIC drivers because that's all that is truly needed during WinPE (along with storage drivers).
Finally, when needing to add a driver, you should test it first by loading up WinPE, dropping to the command-line and using drvload to dynamically load the driver. From there you can test whether it works. Ths is still a trial and error method, but it eliminates
the long drawn process of injecting, distributing, re-booting, etc. and of course it lets you know immediately which driver is correct.

  • Mounting my USB drive without being root

    Hi,
I would like to mount my USB drive without being super-user.
The command I run for mounting the drive is :

    /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom   iso9660   ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd   udf   ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb1 auto noauto,user,exec 0       0
    /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb2 auto noauto,user,exec 0       0
you need to create mountpoints first:
    /mnt/usb1
    /mnt/usb2
user will have to belong to the right groups (storage, video, optical, camera)
usb has nothing to do with sata/scsi/ata as long as I remember usb device was sdX where /dev/sdX corresponds to the port connected.

  • Access my USB external 250 Gb drive

I am alway carrying my file cabinet of a USB external 250 GB drive (Samsung S1 small drive) in business trip. With iPad, is there any way to access my drive in wired way or wireless way?

As an alternative, you could install the Dropbox software, and buy the 9.99 per month 100 gig cloud storage, selectively load your files on it, and then you can access it from anywhere. As a plus for no extra cost you can also install on your imac and phone and they would all have synchronized access to the dropbox. Dont know if thats a practical expense for you, but thats about the only option that would work at this point.

  • Seagate portable drive not being recognized after OSX10.9.2

After I installed the 9.2 update, my Seagate portable external drive is not being recognized - doesnt show up in Finder, or Disk Utility, but I know the drive is live, as I can feel it vibrating
Someone please help, all my time machine backup is on that

I had the same issue - the Seagate drive is in a format that will recognize both Windows and Mac formats and there seems to be a flaw with Seagate.  After working on this for five hours and finally calling Apple, I found out why.  If you reformat to Mac OS extended journaled then they usually start working properly.
When I contacted Seagate they said it was best if you are just using a mac to just use the Mac formatting.
Hope this helps and good luck.  Hope there wasn't any valuable data on the drive.

  • Hp v235r flash drive not being detected on my computer

    Hi,
I am using hp v235r flash drive for more than 5 years. It's not being detected on my computer since two days. Can any one solve my problem, as there is lot of important data stored in it and hasn't been backed up recently.

    Hello budda48,
Its possible the driver for the pen drive is corrupted in your computer, or the drive has met its end of life.
First, confirm that the Pen Drive is seen by other computers. Plug it in to another computer that you havent tried yet.
If it is not working on other computers, then the usb drive is corrupted and there wont be anything else we can do.
If it is working in other computers, then try these steps to troubleshoot the Pen Drive.
Confirm that the port on the computer is not bad. Choose a different port to insert the drive. Next…
Part 1: Make sure that the drive has a drive letter assigned in Disk Management.
Open Computer Management by right clicking on Computer and clicking Manage.
Click on Disk Management. Give it a moment to open the view of the drives installed.
Look for a drive that does not have an assigned drive letter and is not labeled as System Reserved.
Note: System reserved drives are reserved by Windows and will not allow you to assign a letter.
Right-click the unlabeled drive and click Change drive letter and paths…
Click Add and then click OK to select the first available drive letter.
If the Change drive letter and paths… option is not available, make sure that the drive is Online.
If the drive is Offline, right-click the disk number and click Online.
Part 2: If the drive does have a letter assigned and it still does not work, uninstall the driver.
You can safely remove any usb drivers that are not in use (hidden drivers). Devices that get plugged in later will simply reinstall its needed driver again.
Remove the pen drive from the computer if it’s attached.
Right click Computer and click on Properties. In the System window on the left side, click on Advanced System Properties.
Choose the Advanced tab and click on Environment Variables… button at the bottom.
Under System Variables, click on the New… button
Type this in the box that pops up. Variable Name: devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices and also give the Variable Value: 1
Click OK on all the open windows to close them out.
Go to Computer Management again and click on Device Manager. Go to View at the top of the window and click on Show Hidden Devices.
Click on the drop down arrow for Universal Serial Bus Controllers to open the list. Look for any USB Mass Storage Device that is hidden (greyed out) and delete it. There may be several and it’s ok to delete all those hidden USB Mass Storage Devices.
When you connect the pen drive to the computer again, give it a minute to reinstall the driver.

  • Hard Drive not being recognized on my Graphite Clamshell

I have a challenge for anyone. I have a ibook 366(clamshell) that is not recognizing the hd. It was working wonderfully one night I shut it down and the next day I get the flashing question mark. I've tried all of the normal stuff: zap pram, reset nvram tried to use command and s but it didn't go to the programmers screen and all the such. I can boot from a cd but none of the utilities see the hd. I have taken the hd out and connected it to a usb to ide cable that allows me to use it as an external drive and it is recognized without any problem on all of the other macs I connect it to and even on a pc (I know I said the bad word.)Does anyone have any clue what could be the issue. Every thing else seems to work fine. Just the hd is not being recognized. I even put in a different hd. I even formatted the drive using one of my macs that I only have 9.2.2 on and installed a os on it and it still didn't work. The hard drive worked fine and the os with all of its components seemed to be fine. I know it's an older system but it's something that I can let the kids play on and not be concerned with losing any of my files.
    I appreciate any help
    iBook 366 Graphite

Duane, Thanks for your reply. Is there any way to test this? I am going to try to see if any of the utility disks can recognize the hd. I've tried DW 4.0, the Utility Disks on OS 9, X. I've even tried FWB and a few other tools.
