250GB harddisk work in MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum

Hi!
I have a pair of WD 250GB SATA2 16MB cache harddisks (WD2500KS).
Currently they don't work in my Asus A8N-SLI DLX (BIOS messes up LBA and CHS setting with them)
(smaller 120 and 160 GB hdds work flawlessly in that mobo)
So i am considering to switch to MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum.
can anyone confirm these babies would work in that mobo?
Are there any known issues with higher capacity harddisks on MSI nforce 4 boards ?
also i hear that the chipset fan is very noisy. Is that true?
The other option would be the Abit A8N Ultra which has the heatpipe design but i am not so comfortable with Abit, since there are too mayn rumors about them.
Any ideas?

not heard any thing with nvidia
there is a thing with some via

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum motherboard extra firewire ports?

I'm installing an MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum motherboard into my case and although I don't need them right now, I would like to be able to access the extra firewire ports. Does anyone know the best way to get ahold of the MSI motherboard 1394 connectors for J1394_1 / J1394_2 option?
I have the D bracket with the LED's and two extra USB connectors but I don't have the firewire connector. I have USB ports and audio ports on the front of my case which I will use, but no firewire connector, but there is a place for one, just no connector/wires or hardware. Also what is the difference between those two connectors shown in the picture of the optional firewire that appears in the owners manual? They have a different shape.
Where can I get one? I don't need the proprietary peice if I can use something else.

Fireware ports are faster for example external drives will be fastest 1394 rather than usb2.
there are many companies doing drive bays which can add ports to your current case see Front Port Extension Unit however you need to decide what exactly you want,
The example shown passes through case & connects to rear ports.
I prefer ones hich connect to the mobo risers leaving rear ports free, however you then have the complexity of matching the pin outs so that it works with your system. Remember it's not like tring to boot, you may not get a 2nd chance if you miswire connection. . If you can find them the best connectors are those with single pin leads, where each individual wire has its own plug so that you can match it to the mobo's pin out diagram for the particular port.

  • MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Clarification of SATA

    Hi Folks!
Just some clarification from you guys in the know.
I have an MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Mboard. The specs say it will run SATA drives and am looking to upgrade.
Now from shooping around for price i was presented with three options.
SATA 150 , SATA 300 and SATA II
I have worked out that SATA 300 and SATA II are superior to the 150 but is my board capable of running any of the three or is my choice limited.
My motherboard specs just show that it is SATA compatible but no further info.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks in advance.

Q-Tex, All your nVidia SATA ports [1-4] are SATA II 300 mb/s and the Silicon Image SATA ports [5-8] are SATA I 150 mb/s. SATA II drive brands to consider are: Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi, WD [I know from personal experience that Seagate 's work]. I belive that there are still issues with Maxtors. If buying drives from retailer with a high turn over you will get a drive with the latest firmware [has the bugs worked out] and if you buy a drive that doesn't have the latest firmware it's not the end of the world - you can get a firmware upgrade if neccesary.

  • MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Smart CPU Fan reports 0 rpm ?

    Hi
I have a MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum (MS-7125) motherboard with an Athlon 64 3700+ CPU and an Arctic Cooling Silencer Ultra 64 HSF.
In the BIOS setup, in the 'Monitor H/W' area you can set something called the 'Smart CPU Fan Target'.
o  If I set this to disabled, it reports a fan speed of about 2,280 rpm.
o  If I set it to 40°C, it reports a fan speed of 0 rpm !  (the fan is turning)
The MSI Core Center utility and Everest Ultimate also both report the fan speed as 0 rpm.
I assume that if I disable Smart CPU Fan, the fan always rotates at max. rpm; if I set it to 40°C, the fan runs at a slow speed until the temperature exceeds 40°C, at which point it speeds up (likewise if I set it to 50°C or 60°C).  However, the fan IS turning.
Can anyone explain this ?  I would like the reassurance of having the CPU HSF speed reported.
Incidentally , the PSU is an Akasa AK-P460FG
       (3.3v = 30A, +5v = 30A, +12v1 = 14A, +12v2 = 15A)

Very old post yes but I feel the need to reply anyway because I have the same problem myself.
Very strange and would be nice to hear if any more of ya guys out there can see the same.

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum. DOn´t boot

I have a problem with my MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum.  Yesterday I started to mount my computer and when I finished to install everything the computer does not bind.  It swims happens, the Motherboard this not obtaining to receive energy  .  Until my Power Supply it is not functioning, does not receive energy!  Somebody has some Idea of that it can be happening?  Power Supply:  Seventeam ST-420bkv Processor:  Athlon 3000+ venice.  OBS:  All the components are new.

    Well it wasnt the battery
The one I pulled from the board was reading 2.68v, the new one is reading 3.17v, but the problem remains :((
BUT, I discovered if I hold the case power button in while switching the PSU on fom the back that the CMOS details are fine after all?!?! Not pressing the case power button results in the no boot problem. Maybe the switching that disables the battery when the AC is on is broke ???
Its a weird one alright but I can live with it till my next upgrade - which wont be MSI - too many bugs. I have a Gigabyte board in my second PC and its rock solid, dual BIOS and never had a single problem with it - maybe that or ASUS next time round )
Hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.
Would still like to know what the flashing led error is though??
many thnx for all the input guys.
    g2k.

MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum Problem

A lot of things could be wrong but it will be easier to figure out if we know what you did.  When you say you changed settings in Bios, do you remember your last settings and what you did?
It might be helpful if you created a sig (as described in the forum rules) to show what you have in your system like my sig below. (Hint- use profile button in sign on screen.)
Things could be broken even if there is no visible evidence (such as flames or melted component) of course.
If I had to guess and your d-bracket reading is correct, corrupted bios requiring new bios chip, but let's not guess as a lot of things could be wrong and you don't want to invest in a new bios chip if the board cannot be brought back to life.  Consider removing parts and testing them in an other machine.  Start with CPU and memory?
    Good luck.

  • Help MSI K8n Neo 2 Platinum

Good Day I bought a  MSI K8N NEO Platinum recently and have these doubt ! I[m not upgrade the Bios because the system functions perfectly but verified that version 1.2 says Support FSB you 450MHz. What this wants to say? I gain more performance? Another  versions  described terms : - Update NVPXE version you the 2.03.0469. - Update CBROM version you the 1.47. - Update NVRAID version you the 4.81.
What it would be these terms?
Thanks a lot. Sorry my English

If your board is stable and you like it the way it is, there is no reason to update the bios. You should only update the bios if it pertains to you.
Support 450MHz FSB is probably refering to speeds you can attain with overclocking.
NVPXE is for booting off of the LAN. I doubt you need to worry about this.
    CBROM don't know
NVRAID is to update the bios for the RAID, but again if you are having no problems with it there is no need to upgrade.
    Good Luck

  • System setup advice for MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum.

Here is the PC I'm putting together:
Enermax EG465P-VE Noisetaker PSU with 29A on combined 12v rail
    5v=30A 3.3v=30A 12V1=18A and 12V2=18A (comb 12v=29A)
    MSI K8N Neo 2 Plat
AMD 3000+ winchester Retail box (carefully replacing AMD shin etsu with Artic Silver 5)
    WD 80GB 800JB 7200 rpm EIDE HD
OCZ 2 x 256 PC3200 Premier Dual Chan Memory (2.5-3-3-7) (List on MSI website as ok)
    Matrox G400 max
    adaptec 2930u scsi adapter

    Umax 1200S scsi scanner
    Plextor 24/10/40 EIDE CDRW
    External USR robotics serial modem
    Microsoft regular keyboard PS2
    Logitech regular wheel mouse PS2
regular old 1.44 MB floppy drive
Installing Win XP Pro upgrade (have my 98SE CD)
In the future I will possibly ditch my scsi DVD rom and replace with NEC dual layer burner and replace Plextor CDRW with 52/32/52 CDRW/DVD ROM. For now I'm going with what I have.
No plans to overclock now if ever. Perhaps a small amount later. Maybe 2.0 ghz? Maybe no overclocking at all.
Not a gaming rig really, although I'll try the odd game at low resolution.
So is there anything I should do ahead of time? I am carefully installing the board in the case and everything that goes with it. What sort of configuration setups should I do? Do I flash to a more updated BIOS first? Do I leave onboard things un-activated first? How do I setup my memory? For instance, I may look for the best BIOS to start with and have it ready to use if I have problems. I may also use the nVidia drivers for onboard audio instead of the realtek drivers.
Not looking for all the answers, just feel free to point out any of the obvious which may save me time
thanx in advance for any help

There is a compatibility issue betwen the Matrox G series cards and the MSI  Neo Platinum motherboards, which AFAIK, hasn't been solved yet. The problem seems to be a result of changes made in the newer versions of the MSI bios, however you may be stuck if you need a newer bios for the Winchester cpu. You can find out more if you do a search on Matrox in this forum.

  • Msi k8n neo 4 platinum sli sata issue?

hi i am planning to buy a new motherboard and i decided to buy k8n neo 4 platinum sli board. but recently i heard that it has an issue with
silicon image SIL3132 controller that If there was no drive connected to the controller, the system wouldn't complete the POST. does that issue resolved now? please tell me. any new bios update for that?

    hi satya123 ,
    Quote
silicon image SIL3132 controller that If there was no drive connected to the controller, the system wouldn't complete the POST
    not heard of that one.
    But it's easily sorted :-
    Bios - Onboard Devices
    OnBoard Sil3132 RAID
This setting controls the onboard Sil3132 RAID chip. Setting options: [Enabled],
    [Disabled].
    OnBoard Sil3132 Mode
This setting allows you to select either SATA and RAID mode for the onboard
Sil3132 RAID chip. Setting options: [SATA], [RAID].
just set OnBoard Sil3132 RAID to disabled.
    Sorted

  • PDP Systems Patriot PC3200 XBLK & MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum

I 've got a simple question and I hope that the answer is gonna be the same
Does PDP Systems PEP5123200+XBLK is compatibile with MSI K8N 2 Neo Platinum?
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find anything about this pair on the web and on manufacturers site either. So I've decided to post this subject on this forum, expecting that somebody would pop up with the answer.
    Thanks for your replies.

And yes I have tried different multis etc, but like I say, these memory contollers on Winchesters are pretty weird.  I found that my CPU does not like running with a memory divider, for example.
Its never a great idea to run asynch anyway.  Not unless you have really crappy ram that's holding you back so much.
    Quote
Besides, 9x285 is only 2565Mhz, which would slow memory bandwidth down anyway due to the mem contoller running slower.
Ummm.  I wouldn't worry too much about that if I were you.  You will have higher memory bandwidth running at A x 285 than you will at B x 265, no matter what memtest and others tell you.  (Providing the timings are the same of course.)
The problem is when you run your processor faster, it fools some benchmarks into thinking your memory bandwidth is higher, when it isn't.
Now whether 9x 285 runs faster *overall* than 10 x 260 (say), you would have to bench for yourself using whatever games/benchmarks you normally use.  I would say 9x285 probably *is* faster than 10x260, and you can probably achieve it with lower voltages too.  Its worth messing around with to find out.  3dmark01 is a great test for CPU performance.  Its very sensitive to CPU speed, yet unlike the really synthetic tests - like Super_PI, for example - it exercises your video card too.  At the   other end of the spectrum is 3dmark05, which is a fairly useless benchmark as far as CPU's are concerned.
    Chip
I was always under the impression that the memory controller matched the speed of the CPU.  So a slower CPU = Slower mem controller = slower bandwidth.  Can you tell me which memory banchmarks do not get fooled into showing lower memory bandwidth when the mem contoller is running slower when in combination with higher HTT?   I'm also aware that asynch is not as good as synch, I was just illustrating that the mem controller on my winnie is quirky to say the least.
I tried running higher again last night and running lower memory voltage prevents it from entering windows.  I need 2.85v to hit windows at higher HTT, apparently PDP use the voltage loving variety of TCCD.  If I could get my OCZ booster to work, I would test this theory.
What speed are you running your PQI at anyway?  I'm guessing it's not the speed shown in your sig, or you wouldn't be bashing the speed I'm running my memory at.

  • Issue with RAID 1 on MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum

    Hi all,
I have been running a MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum with two Hitachi Deskstar drives configured striped on the Nvidia RAID Chip for a while now with no problems at all.  I just purchased two new drives that I wanted to run in a RAID 1 array as a secondary drive to store some of my files on.  I have hooked the two disks up and can see them on either the NVIDIA or Sil Bios screen and have been able to set them up as a RAID 1 array.  The problem occurs when I boot into windows.  Windows is unable to detect the disk.  Once again I have tried both the sil and Nvidia raid chips and are able to see and configure the drives using either the bios tool or the gui in windows but am unable to see the disk in windows.  Has anyone encountered this before?  If anyone has any ideas as too what may be causing this (likely user error on my part but nothing seems to work) I would appreciate any help.  I don't think this a hardware issue but more of a software issue because I am booting off the RAID 0 array fine its just when I try to add two additional drives that I can't seem to find them in windows.
    Thanks,
    Nuggs

Go to:  Amin. Tools - Comp. Management - Disk Management  then you should see your drives. You need to partition them and then you format them. Once done that, they will be visible in Windows Explorer.

  • Msi k8n neo 4 platinum big...small tproblem

hi, i just build my pc (again: see topic nx7900gtvt2d256e need heelp!!!) on vga products.
i, first of all, forget to uninnstall previous drivers (nvidia nforce 2) but all run well until something happen and the pc turn off, that's was the msi round ide cable, its really large and too hard to bend in some cases and use lots of space, easily can be broken in mid tower cases.
the another problem was i can't save bios settings, after a turn of for a while my pc, "might be discharged bios battery" so i changed and seems to work well exept for one thing, RTC real time clock, when i turn on show the same hour than  when i turned off, and no matter what i do the problem persists. i didnt know what happen, and in very large off period  also cant save bios settings. i updated bios to 1.d latest in msi web page but nothing. ill sent to my retailer tomorrow in warranty, but maybe something i can do to avoid that.

yea i know that, but just run out of cash and, culd not buy new memos, this one are from my old duron 1600 k7n2delta ilsr, msi fx5700vtd128, so i had to use it by now, ill change it later, anyway good memos here are quite expensive -right now¨even more- 84 usd 512mb value mamory, 130 usd 1gb value memory, 200usd some 512mb some good memos, so im waiting next month to buy new ones, my psu isnt so damn powerful, but was reviewed in local magazines and some pages, and won good points, it was tested running with a643800+ with nforce 4 sli   x16 2 7900gt in sli mode 1gb ram without problems.
anyway the real time clock doesnt need lots of power to work.
updated bios ver to 1.d no change.
i know mix memos can be a serious issue, so also used 1 per time and with the same problems, ill see what can i get good for my budget

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum Power Consumption

    Hallo,
I try to find out the power consumption of the K8N Neo2 s939 motherboard. The working scenario is:
    Audio: Off
    Passive Cooling of NB
    4 DIMMS RAM.

For example on my rig with current configuration w/2 case fans: idle~75W, light weight card games & Hoyle Bard Games 77W~110W, DVD movie~90W-95W, Intel Burn test~160W-190W, UNIGINE Heaven~265W-280W. Any where between those extremes for other everyday things. Those figures are for my rig and would not apply to another persons rig but are just for example as to variation of power consumption depending on task performed. Also not included in those readings is my monitor as I didn't bother to use a 2 or 3 way adapter when I hooked the meter up.
Also overclocking CPU & GPU would be much higher power consumption.
CPU and/or graphics cards used can make a huge difference. There is no way to come even close to answering your question due to wide variations in different systems. "Kill-a-Watt" meters are as low as $20 USD on up depending on particular model and store purchased from. I use the cheap $20 unit.

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum Problem

    Hi,
First of all i read sticky post and did lots of searches before posting here but nothing seems to solve the problem. I have K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard with Athlon64 3200+ (Venice) and 2x512 Twinmos CL2.5 RAM. System was working fine but i wanted to try overclocking since system temperature was low 30-35 degrees cpu. I tried lots of combinations from bios (cell section) sometimes system doesn't boot (no beep no video) sometimes booted. When it didn't boot i cleared the cmos and it rebooted with default settings again. But after couple of bad cell overclocking attempts and following clear cmos procedure it started not to boot (no beep, no video but fans working and cdrom/dvd light are blinking constantly). An nothing fixes it i tried to clear cmos again, remove the battery and leave it like that about 4 hours. Tried with different psu, different vga card, disconnect everything other than cpu, ram but nothing helps. D-Bracket lights are 1 - Orange 2 - Red 3 -Red 4 - Orange And i guess this means bios sign on. Even if i remove ram modules lights are same doesn't change to show that no ram modules are inserted. Is it possible that cpu, rams or motherboard damaged because of my overclocking attempts? I don't think so because there is no sign of damaged components (as far as i cen tell of course)
I appreciate any recommendations on solving this issue. Thanks in advance...
