256 Colors/Old Games

is there anyway to fix this manually, i have tried everything i can think of except using the start up disk to try and revert to an older version for leopard so i can play fallout again i have the GMA X3100 Graphics card witch Ive heard had the most issues with 256 colors recently, any ideas?

Unfortunately some games require software graphics emulation or hardware graphics emulation which may not work in the Classic environment, and only work while booted into Mac OS 9.  If your eMac is too new for booting into Mac OS 9, you may be out of luck.    To see which eMac can run booted mode, see this tip:

  • Old Game not coming up in OS9

    Hi Guys,
I wondered if you can help me with this one. I recently bought a coyp of the old X-wing game from the mid-90's. I know that it only plays in OS9 and I am currently running OS 10.4.9.
I know that I need to be in the Classic environment, so I loaded OS9 onto my LaCie external harddrive. When I click on the little Xwing logo that I copied to my external drive, the system does the typical "fade-to-black" like the game is going to start up. However, the game never starts. It just kind of sits there with a goof "ghost-like" image of my OSX desktop that just changes colors, but never gets to the game. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks for the help!

H, Nhojnik. X-Wing may require that your computer be set for a certain color depth and/or display resolution, and it may try to make the necessary hardware adjustments itself when you start it up. In OS 9, it can do that. In Classic mode within OS X, the game does not have access to any hardware adjustments: OS X retains absolute control of all hardware, and any Classic application that tries to access hardware controls will find the way barred against it.
If you can make the necessary adjustments yourself in OS X before opening X-Wing, perhaps the game will run. Give that a try, if you have some idea what the required settings might be. (For starters, you might try 256 colors and a resolution of 640 x 480, 800 x 600, or 1024 x 768.) If X-Wing won't run without being able to make the necessary hardware adjustments by itself, it's incompatible with Classic mode, and you won't be able to run it on your Mini.

  • 256 Colors on new 24 inch iMac

Is it possible to get the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in my new 24 inch intel iMac to be able to show 256 colors?

    It still doesn't show up.
What I am trying to do is use Boot Camp to play a game, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, but the game has to be played in 256 colors. I've tried all kinds of troubleshooting things in Boot Camp, but nothing works.
I can't find drivers for my video card, are there any that I need?
I've also heard of Windows programs that can trick the game into thinking it is running in 256 colors... where can I find one of those?

  • Old games crashing?

    Hello all,
I am trying to run my kids old PC games (which also include Mac versions in the same CD) on my iBook. A large number of them, though, crashes frequently while running under classic. Any ideas about what can I do to make them less unstable?
    Thanks!

Hi, finwhiz, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Whether you can get the games to run stably in Classic mode depends on the design of each individual game. As a class of software, games may be less compatible with Classic mode than any other, because it has been so commonplace for game programmers to play fast and loose with Apple's software design guidelines. Specifically, game programmers have often presumed that a game will have direct access to the hardware of the computer it's running on, to change the display resolution, color depth, audio settings, etc. That may be true when a game runs in OS 9, but it isn't true when the same game runs in Classic: In Classic, only OS X (and the user, through OS X's System Preferences) has access to the hardware and hardware-related settings. A Classic application that tries to adjust the hardware by itself will fail, and if its programmer hasn't given it a graceful alternative (like asking you to make the necessary changes yourself), the game is likely to crash or quit unexpectedly.
Some old games may be incompatible even with pure OS 9 (without OS X running at all). OS 9 introduced changes with which some old software was not compatible, though most software that ran well in OS 8.6 also ran well in 9.x, and other apps got minor updates for OS 9 compatibility. (I presume you've made sure you have the latest versions of all the games in question.)
Generally speaking, if a game runs well in pure OS 9.2.2 but not in Classic, you should just start your computer up in OS 9.2.2 (if possible) in order to use it, because it isn't compatible with Classic. If it won't run reliably even when you start the computer up in OS 9.2.2, or if your computer can't start up at all in OS 9.2.2, I recommend running the game in question on an old Mac in whatever OS it seems to like, not on any computer on that has OS X installed.

  • ARD 2 with 256 colors client computers

I am running ARD 2.2 and when I connect to a client computer that is running in 256 colors I don't get a clear image of that screen. What I get looks like four tiny distorted images of the screen that I can do absolutely nothing with. Unfortunately, we are running some old OS 9 software that requires 256 colors so I can't change that. Is there anything I can do on the administrator side to make those screens more visible? Any suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks!

You don't seem to be using any of the afterimage features so could could just use the lighter community/rxvt-unicode-256color package (which does not have this problem).
Just a guess but adding the following to your .Xdefaults may fix the issue.
    urxvt.termName:rxvt-256color

Carefully follow steps 1-9 outlined by wjosten in this post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13356770#13356770.  This will not, however, avoid wiping any non-purchased media from your phone (ripped CDs, etc.) as this is only synced one way: from your computer to your phone.  You will have to either rebuild your iTunes library with this content and sync again to restore it to your phone, or purchase 3rd party software to copy it from your phone to iTunes prior to syncing (such as Touch Copy).

powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   a question about an old game running on classic 9

HI, SB. If the file is merely locked, that won't prevent you from putting it into the Trash, and holding down the Option keey when emptying the Trash will dispose of it. If the error message is that the file is "locked or in use", the file may be open or in use by other software, in which case you can't move it to the Trash. Try this: boot to a CD — any bootable CD or DVD will do — and then try moving the file to the Trash and emptying it.
If even that doesn't work, your hard disk directory is probably damaged and needs to be repaired. Boot to your latest OS Installer CD or DVD and open Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk routine repeatedly until you've gotten two successive "Appears OK" verdicts from it. Then trash the file and empty the Trash.
If you can't get a clean bill of health from Disk Utility, you'll need to use a more powerful disk utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to make the necessary repairs.

If you made a backup before you restored it you can restore your iPhone from a backup and your game data should be restored.  When you connect your iPhone in iTunes you can right click on it in the sidebar and select restore from backup.

  • 256 color in Forms 10g

I find that there is support for ONLY 256 color in Forms 10g. Is it a limitation and can we use more than 256 colors?
I want to enter r92g136b146 in canvas properties background color. It gives me an errror FRM-12305
    Please help. Thanks.

Forms supports 8 bit and 24 bit color spaces. It does not support 16 bit however.
The help file describes how you can define colors in a custom palette and load that. Note.37765.1 is also helpful.
Even though the notation you see in the property palette looks like a standard 24 bit rgb notation it is not. It uses percentages (and only discrete values, not 0-100) for each channel rather than values between 0 and 255.

Regarding the old iMac.  Just delete your USER NAME from the Control Panel.  Go into System Preferences - then User/Groups and delete your account from there.
Just a bit of advice though before you do all this, go and buy yourself a remote Hard Drive, they're really good value today and copy off all of your sacred files from your old computer onto the new drive.  You could also do the same via the Backup.app
It's well worth doing....    You can easily delay the switch over for a few days and you'll then have a backup disc that you'll start to use again and again.

  • How to save a JPG in 256 colors?

    I'm using Photoshop CS2.
    1. How to save a JPG in 256 colors?
    2. Is there a way to see an image properties?
-- I want to know if that image is in 256 color or not...

Mary Jo, since you are a newcomer, you may not yet understand that in any given Adobe forum, there are a whole bunch of conversations going on at the same time. Each one of these is about a certain "topic", described in the title and opening post. The discussion sometimes stays right on point, and sometimes veers off a bit, and there are often quick side-issues branching off from the main topic, but still related. Within limits, people here try to keep the discussion on a single general topic. For example, in this topic, the initial issue is whether there is a way, in Photoshop, to limit the number of colors in a JPEG image to 256; there were discussions about whether this could be done or not, and alternative programs that may be able to accomplish this, and a comparison of the file sizes for 256 bit images in different file types.
Your question, however, is not a logical outgrowth of the discussion. It's a perfectly good question, but it deserves its own new discussion topic. It's like a bunch of people have been sitting around a table discussing the merits of Canon vs. Nikon SLRs, and someone sits down at the table and, instead of joining the conversation, asks a completely unrelated question about point-and-shoot cameras, or camcorders.
It's off-topic here, and you should start a new topic. Make the title descriptive, such as "Why does a 8 megapixel image result in a 3 megabyte file on my computer?" (assuming that's what you want to ask -- just "M" doesn't tell me whether you are talking about MP or MB). In the initial post, provide a more detailed description of what you want to know. Tell us what camera and Photoshop version you are using, and how you encountered the issue. People will see that a new topic raises an issue they know something about and you will get a response -- probably a good answer, if you keep in the conversation.
[Edit: Trez hit "post" before I did. Trez-- I think she is using Photoshop, not Elements; she did say CS2.]

  • Using more than 256 colors in 3D graph?

    Hi,
I am using 3D surface plot in Labview 6.i and I would like to know if it is
possible to use more than 256 colors (in the Z-scale).
Actually I would like to have very smooth change in the color map and this
could be possible if we could use 16bit color instead of 8bit.
    Thanks.

  • How can i create 256 colors (8 bits) jpeg ?

    Dear all :
The jpeg created by JPEGEncoder was in true color (24 bits) , how can i create or convert the jpeg to 256 colors . Because i want to convert the jpeg to gif in further , but the gifencoder i found can only accept the images that with 256 colors only , so any one can give me a help ? Or the ways that convert a jpeg to gif using java ?

To reduce the number of colors in an image, try:
    http://www.gurge.com/amd/java/quantize/
This does a very good job of reducing colors without making the image look too different.
Further, if you want to encode a GIF file, try using:
    http://www.acme.com/java/software/Acme.JPM.Encoders.GifEncoder.html
There should be some sample code which shows you how to use those packages on their respective websites. Hope this helps!

  • Why is the 256 Color Option 'ghosted' in Leopard?

I've recently 'upgraded' my Mac Pro to Leopard and in the process have killed a major piece of cross platform software that I use in my work. Apparently, Leopard has disabled 256 color compatibility, while simultaneously leaving the option as ghosted teaser on the displays panel of system preferences. They even have a posting on this (answer 306773) that claims this is 'normal'.
Now, I don't actually want to set the global display to 256 colors, but my application works in X11, where I need the individual windows to open with 8-bit color depth. This was never a problem with Tiger (or Windows or Linux). So long as the OS supports 256 colors, the windows open fine under X. As things are now, when I open X in 256 color mode, I get blank white screens on the same machine where they were working fine on before the upgrade!
Does anyone know if this is going to be fixed or if there is a workaround that will enable me to use this program? As it stands now, I'm pretty much frozen out of the Mac OS as a work computer unless I go back to Tiger. I'm in the process of getting a new set of computers for the group I'm in, and, if this isn't fixable, I'm probably going to have cancel my mac orders and switch to PCs instead (horrors!).
    Any ideas out there?

I suggest posting to the Unix forum under OS X Technologies where the X11 gurus hang out.
