256 gb ssd vs 500gb hhd

HAD TO REPLACE THE HD IN MY 2011 IMAC, HAD ISSUES WITH THE NEW HD SO THE **** WITH IT I WANTED A SSD ANYWAY. SINCE I ONLY USE ABOUT 16 GB AT ANY GIVEN TIME WOULD I STILL BENNEFIT ISTALLING A 256 GB PRO SSD .

an SSD is much faster than an HDD so in that aspect you will benefit, the only thing you will lose is storage space, if that is more important to you.

  • Tinkpad W530 w. 32GB SSD and 5hhGB HHD. Factory setup does not allow installation on SSD

    Hi
Today I've received a brand new W530 with 32 GB SSD and 500GB HHD from lenovo. I started to setup the system using the factory setup.... but I was not able to chose the disk to install the system. It only allows to install Win 7 Pro 64 Bit on HHD.
Also the Boot/Recovery Media Disk do not allow to select the disk (drop down list disabled).....
How to get the system onto the SSD instead of HHD?
Having the Win7 on the SSD was the motivation to buy the bundle from lenovo - expecting that the factory setup is ready supporting the SSD..........
Any help is welcome. Thanks in advance.

A 256GB Samsung 830 would be what I would recommend and your 500GB in an ultrabay.
I totally agree with that point.  The puny 32GB mSATA is designed to be used with the hokey caching Intel created.
Or with ExpressCache - there is a version for Lenovo notebooks if you look around

You can use XP but it has to be in a Virtual Machine and OS X as the host instead of as a dual boot system with XP in its own partition. That is how I run Windows on my Mac, in a Virtual Machine.
Take a look at VritualBox from Oracle. It's free and works very well.

Not only would it be safe but less expensive as well.  The tray loaders are deemed to be the most reliable.  Apple does not support Blueray so avoid that.
    Ciao.

  • 256 gb ssd dual boot

hi i have ordered a mac book pro retina. yet to be despatched.is the 256 gb ssd hard drive large enough to cope with a dual boot with OSx and win 7
if so what partitions would you recommend

You shouldn't have any problem with Windows and OS X. If you don't have enough storage, get an external disk and use it to store data.
If you want to install a lot of applications in Windows, the minimum space for Windows is 100 GB. Then you can assign more, and if you want to get more space for Windows, use Paragon Camptune to add more space to the Windows partition

  • P300 has three options for 256 GB SSD, two of which seem identical

I'm strongly considering a ThinkStation P300 Tower. I would like my primary/boot drive to be an SSD, and as discussed here, that means I should select the SSD as the "First Hard Drive Bay" in the online configurator. For the P300, there are three different entries for 256 GB SSDs (I'll label them (i), (ii), and (iii)): (i) 2.5" 256GB SATA SolidState Drive [add $200.00]
(ii) 2.5" 256GB SATA Solid State Drive (OPAL) [add $200.00]
(iii) 256GB SATA 2.5" Solid State Drive (OPAL) [add $200.00] As you can see, all three are the same price (i.e., $200 USD above the base price). What is the difference between (i), (ii), and (iii)? OK, so obviously (ii) and (iii) have OPAL, whereas (i) doesn't. I'm not a computer expert, and I hardly know what OPAL is; a web search tells me that it is a standard by which data on a hard drive can be encrypted such that if the drive is stolen, the data has some additional layer of protection. My thinking is that even if I purchase an OPAL drive, I would need to somehow enable that functionality if I wanted it. So, maybe (ii) and (iii) are OPAL capable but not OPAL ready "out of the box"? Anyway, OPAL aside, what is the difference between (ii) and (iii)? Well, as far as I can tell, they are the same. I suppose one possibility is that they ARE the same and the duplicate entry is just a typo. Another possibility is that they are drives with the same, or essentially the same, specs but made by different manufacturers (Samsung? Seagate? Intel? etc.). Inbound Sales didn't know. I don't necessarily expect you to know, but do you have any idea what is the difference between the three 256 GB SSDs, and especially between (ii) and (iii)? Thanks for your time; you have been SO generous with it!

Good question, and good catch on the configurator.
I don't know for sure why the configurator is listing two different drives for (ii) and (iii)...on the surface they appear to be the same.  I have a couple of theories as to why it's showing like that, but I need to go back and confirm before I put those out there as it could just cause a lot of confusion.  Based on what I know of the drives qualified and those actually available, I'd say in the 256GB OPAL class, there are maybe 4 different drives that your system could be built with...likely fewer as I suspect some of those have gone EOL.
My guess, based on the pricing, is that in reality those selections are essentially the same.  Probably just an oversight that both are listed.
I'm also looking into why that drive listing is so haphazard overall....it's really difficult to navigate.

  • Partitioning a 256 GB SSD into two bootable partitions

    I will soon get a 27in iMac Core i7 with a 1 TB internal and a 256 GB SSD.
    I have three questions :
1- Can I partition the SSD so as to get two bootable partitions (one with Snow Leopard and the other with a clone of this same Snow Leopard partition that I will eventually upgrade to Lion when it gets available) ?
One of my goals is to keep an Operating System with Rosetta available.
2- Will it still be possible to install Bootcamp (Windows 7) on an NTFS partition on the 1 TB Internal drive, amongst other partition(s) ?
3- Any chance of predicting how Windows 7 will react to the presence of an internal SSD ?
(Will it merely see the SSD partitions? Will it be able to read and write to them ?)
Thanks in advance for your concern.
    PP

    1. Yes.
    2. Yes as long as there is only the one OS X partition before setting up Boot Camp. You cannot create other partitions or you will lose the ability to manage the Boot Camp partition (remove it and/or re-add it.)
    3. Windows will not read or write the OS X volumes.

  • Video streaming - 256 GB SSD

I just bought a MBP with a 256 GB SSD. I know that SSD's have a limited number of writes. I often stream videos from Netflix, not download, just watch in-browser. It's not super high-definition, but it does say "HD." Does this add significantly to the number of writes? I watch about 300 hours a year of HD video, not counting Youtube, which I regularly use. I want this SSD to last for as long as possible, so that's why I'm asking.

OK, thanks. I read on another site HD video can be up to 1-2 GB of write to SSD per hour; even if that is the case, that is not too bad. I was originally concerned it would be like 10 GB an hour.

  • Would a 256 GB SSD on a 2012 Mac Mini significantly improve Final Cut Pro X Performance?

Would a 256 GB SSD on a 2012 Mac Mini significantly improve Final Cut Pro X Performance?
I'm considering a 2012 Mac Mini 2.6 Quad Core with 16 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD with external Thunderbolt drives.
I understand that Mavericks allocates 1GB VRAM from system memory in a 2012 Mini with 8GB RAM.

It will only improve the read and write performance, and this is not as important as the processor and the GPU in Final Cut Pro.
The Mac mini has got an integrated GPU that may work if you are a home user, but if you are a professional user, you should consider an iMac, a 15-inch MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro. You won't notice a big performance increase

  • Can (& Should) I move home directory from 256 GB SSD to 2 TB HD?

I just got a new iMac configured with two internal drives, buying into the notion that the 256 GB SSD would allow faster boot times and quicker application loads. I always planned to store everything else on the other internal 2 TB rotational drive. After completing the initial setup, I noticed that my home folder is on the SSD. I'm sure I was asked where I wanted it to go during the process, but apparently I wasn't paying close enough attention.
    My two questions are:
    1. Shouldn't my home folder be on the larger drive?
    2. How do I move my home folder (without starting over)?

In addition to what Sig had to say, I would like to use my disk configuration as a possible example for you. I have three disks in my Mac Pro. I have the operating system and home folder on the smallest of these disks. I have two major applications on my Mac Pro. I put the project files for each of these applications on the other two disks. My photographs take up a significant part of one of those disk. My database is smaller and does need the complete disk so I have my music stored there.
By removing all of the larger project and music files from the home folder, it is only a bit over 6 GB most of that being mail. I find that this is a good solution for me.

by looking at the specs the laptop is better but if your not a gamer or graphics designer  then you most likly wont notice a difference in the performance at all so with that said a few downsides
the processor is i5 the i7 processor is the better processor the graphics card has half the dedicated memory that the laptop has and the hdd compared to the solid state is not much of a difference unless you wanna move your computer all the time you wont need a solid state drive
but like i said before if your not a gamer or graphics designer on your computer you will not notice the difference most likely

  • Will a 256 gig SSD be enough for caches or should i go for 500?

I'm getting a laptop for AE which will come with a terabyte HDD. Im going to put the OS and AE on an SSD. Do you think 256 gigs will be enough or should i go for 500? How much space would be enough for caching? I dont want to get a 500GB SSD and then realize it was overkill. thanks

Yes, you're right about the boot and application start.
And that's just the point for putting user files on the SSD.  SSD's are far faster at reading & writing than a hard drive... with no physical wear & tear.  And when you're reading a hundred layers of HD footage and a hundred more layers of Photoshop & Illustrator documents -- for each and every frame of your AE composition -- you stand to boost the machine's performance significantly with shorter read times multiplied by 200... to say nothing of the absence of physical wear & tear.
You might also consider putting media files on an external hard drive.

  • SSD vs 500Gb

I currently have a 17" MBP that came with the 500Gb Hitachi Drive. I was offered a 250Gb SSD drive. What would the benefit, if any, be to installing the SSD drive in my MBP?

SSD is less succeptable to head crashes.
SSD may have faster reads and writes for certain items that require access to the hard drive more frequently, though the limit there is often in the interface to the SSD, and not the speed of the actual drive.
The longevity of SSD versus hard drives is still not very well known given the newness of SSD technologies. Many hard drives have been known to last over a decade, albeit you will always get a few DOA drives and those that last a few months. The warranty period of the drive should give a nominal idea of how long the drive is manufactured to last, though it isn't always reliable. Backing up* is a must regardless:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
If you have any chance of the storage space exceeding an arbitrary 85% full with only 256 GB, you might want to stick to having the hard drive, until if and when 500 GB SSDs come to existence. The reason is Mac OS X has significantly had a harder time accessing resources when the drive exceeds a certain percentrage capacity based on arbitrary experience.

  • I have a brand new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM and 256 gb SSD where the screen flickered abnormally and got dead all of a sudden while uploading a photograph in FB. Can anybody help?

I have a new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM, 256 SSD and use Mavericks OS. It is still under waranty period.
Just few days ago while I was uploading a photograph in facebook, the screen started flickering abnoromally. I tried using the escape button but nothing was working so switched off by pressing the power button.
After few minutes I tried to switch it on but my system never waked up. Called up the Apple Support, did SMC and PRAM but nothing worked. Then I was advised to take it to Apple's authorised service centre.
At the service centre the engineers diagnoised and then said that the MLB/mother board needs to be replaced. Had waited for six-long days and today they had replaced the MLB/mother board. Now, the system came to life but nothing has booted. The screen goes white and a '?' question mark icon keeps on flickering.
After thoroughly diagnoising it the engineer said that now the problem is with the SSD and the worse thing is all my important documents and photographs etc are no more there. And I don't have a backup of the same!
While Apple Support contact centre is assuring they would replace any other parts if found faulty, but I feel differently. First, the MLB/mother board was changed now they say it is SSD problem - so if the SSD too is replaced there are possibilities of more faults coming up. All I can see and feel that this particular machine has turned out to be architectually deffective that calls for immediate replacement.
Right now I am using a friend's windows pc to write this mail.
Feeling completely miserable - all my expectatations gone after investing in such an expensive machine, loss of all my data, wastage of time and energy and to top it all affecting my daily work.
Can anybody please advise what shall I do?

Take the system to an Apple store to be fixed or replaced as the one you have has defective hardware.

  • How do you run to Drives on the same screen. I installed a ssd and a hhd to my mac but i can only view the content of the drive only if i boot of that drive. Im try to have my ssd for fast boots and hhd for my music, movies etc. Please help.

I installed a samsung 840 pro SSD to my primary slot and relocated my 1.5 TB HDD to a data double where my optical drive was. I transfered my apps and Mac OS X to my SSD for fast boots and all my itunes movies, music, Iphoto etc to my HDD. I rebooted off my SSD then seen all the data on my HHD itunes movies, music, iphotos etc i cannot view on my SSD. So my question is how do you view all the content on both the ssd and hdd on the same screen with having to boot off one or the other?

No, what I'm saying is that once you boot into OSX, you should be able to see both drives listed.  If you don't then either OSX is hiding the other drive because it sees it as a boot drive and is trying to protect the contents from novice users or there's another problem.  If it's the first thing (i.e. it's a protection thing), then your only option would be to boot into the old drive, copy off all your personal data to an external backup drive, then reboot into the SSD and go into Disk Utilities and wipe/reformat the second drive so that you can see it as a regular secondary drive.  Then when you see it as that, you can copy your data back to it.
Be carefull poking around in Disk Utility as you can easily lose your data.  It's possible the Mac just isn't mounting that second drive because it sees it as another boot drive.  Whatever you do, don't accidentally erase it without getting a copy of your data off of it because you obviously don't have that on your SSD now.
